Lately I have noticed quite a few newspa-pers and magazines praising a polish for-mulated by a homemaker. The articles

report that Donna Maas grew frustrated with rub-bing and scrubbing her silver, brass and other met-als only to see them quickly become dull andtarnished again. Determined to put an end to herconstant battle with tarnish Donna formulated ametal cleaner and it’s transforming the industry.

Anita Gold, nationally syndicated columnist andexpert on the restoration of antiques calls MAAS(named after its inventor) “The best and mostamazing polish in the world.” Ms. Gold wrote inher column, “A truly miraculous polish referred toas “miracle polish” that’ll turn the most disastrouspieces into the most de-brightful is MAAS FinePolishing Creme For All Metals, which cleans, re-stores, preserves and polishes to perfection anybrass, copper, chrome, silver, stainless steel, alu-minum, gold or any other metal with amazing re-sults – no matter how badly stained, spotted, discolored, flood-damaged, weathered, dirty, dingy, drab, or dull they may be.”

Since I had an old brass lamp in desperate needof restoration, this journalist decided to put MAASto the test. The lamp had been stored in the garageand was in far worse condition than I remem-bered. I was flabbergasted as I watched the polish-ing creme wipe away layers and years of tarnish.Never have I used anything so easy. The lamp ac-tually looks better than when I purchased it. Betteryet, months later it’s still glowing!

The polish worked so effortlessly, I decided to re-furbish my mother’s collection of antique brassand copper cookware. The badly stained pots andpans developed black spots that had been impossi-ble to remove. MAAS wiped away the years ofbuilt-up residue even from the most discoloredpieces. While polishing thepots and pans, I noticedMAAS applying a shineon the stainless steel sink.So I cleaned the entire sinkwith the creme. WOW!The shine is unbelievableand although I washdishes every day, the shinekeeps-on-shining. And it’sno longer covered with

ugly water spots – water just rolls off the protectivefinish and down the drain.

An independent consumer study of 28 metal pol-ishes reports, “MAAS Polishing Creme has noequals in all around polishing performance...”MAAS retained its shine longer than every polishtested. Good Housekeeping Institute recommendsMAAS for restoring heavily tarnished heirloomsstating, MAAS cleans best and gives lasting results.”

The Miami Herald says “Polishing product canrenew old silver.” The Chicago Tribune headlinesums it all up by say-ing “One AmazingPolish Is The Best AtEverything.”

How did a home-maker come up withsomething the indus-try’s experts couldn’t?The reporter in mehad to find out.

During our inter-view Donna ex-plained, “I enjoy thewarmth that beautifully polished metals add to ahome. However, not the hours it took to keep themtarnish free. The harsh cleaners always left myhands dry and burning – one instant silver dipsmelled so bad I felt sick. When I read the label, Idiscovered it contained cancer-causing ingredients. That's when I became determined to find a betterway to care for the metals in my home.”

And that she did. Her formula developed in con-junction with a chemist friend has a lavender scent, feels more like a hand cream, quickly restores andleaves a deep, rich one-of-a-kind luster beyond any-thing I’ve ever seen.

“To my surprise,” Donna reveals, “the formulafar exceeded my originalgoal. MAAS restores glassfireplace doors, cloudedcrystal vases, fiberglass, linoleum and even plastic. The restorations were soremarkable everyone sug-gested that I sell my in-vention on television.”

Donna sent samples ofher polish to televised

shopping channels and both QVC and The HomeShopping Network asked Donna to personally ap-

pear on TV to demonstrateher product. 17,000 viewerscalled during MAAS’ debutand encore performancesquickly brought a milliondollars in record-breakingsales.

Leona Toppel was about tothrow away a brass chande-lier. “No amount of elbowgrease could shine it up.With very little effort (a bigplus for me because I suffer

from arthritis) MAAS made that chandelier looklike new. It’s been years and to everyone's surpriseit’s still glowing.”

“MAAS outperforms every polish I’ve tried,”Donna beams with satisfaction. “So if you’re astired as I was of cleaning metals just to see tarnishreappear a few weeks later, MAAS it!”

Finally, a Shine That Lasts! Now, you can restore every metal and more to its

original beauty with MAAS easy wipe-on, wipe-off, no-wait polish. Just send $12.95 plus $5.95S&H for one large 4 oz. tube of MAAS. can animals really “smell” fear in a person? —V. M., Waterloo, IowaAlmost certainly, no. Many animals do emit pheromones, chemicals that transmit information such as the presence of danger, location of a food source, or interest in mating, to others of the same species. (Ants and bees coordinate complex colony and hive activities this way.) However, humans are not known to be among these animals, though researchers continue to study the subject. Also, even if any human pher-omones do exist, they would be perceived only by other humans. (We don’t detect ant pheromones; ants don’t detect bee pheromones.)

Plus, in an evolutionary sense, no good would likely come from sending a signal of fear to a predator. That wouldn’t help keep you alive long enough to pass on your genes to the next generation, would it?

Put moderate-to-severe hot fl ashes in their place with DUAVEE

Learn more at DUAVEE.com

FOR POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN WITH A UTERUSDUAVEE (conjugated estrogens/bazedoxifene) is the fi rst and only pairing of its kind• DUAVEE is an estrogen-based therapy. It contains bazedoxifene instead of a progestin to help protect the uterine lining

from abnormal thickening that may result from taking estrogens alone.

• DUAVEE signifi cantly reduces the frequency and severity of moderate-to-severe hot fl ashes due to menopause.

• DUAVEE doesn’t need to be taken forever—just for the time in your life when you need relief.

Ask your doctor if prescription DUAVEE is right for youFor prevention of bone loss alone, talk to your doctor about whether a different treatment without estrogens might be better for you. DUAVEE should be taken for the shortest time possible. You should talk to your doctor regularly to see if treatment is still needed.

Do not use DUAVEE if you: have or had blood clots; are allergic to any of its ingredients; have unusual vaginal bleeding; have or had certain cancers (eg, uterine or breast), liver problems, or bleeding disorders; or are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding a baby. The use of estrogen alone has been reported to result in an increase in abnormal mammograms requiring further evaluation. The effect of treatment with DUAVEE on the risk of breast and ovarian cancer is unknown. Estrogens increase the risk of gallbladder disease. Discontinue estrogen if loss of vision, pancreatitis, or liver problems occur. If you take thyroid medication, consult your healthcare provider as use of estrogens may change the amount needed. The most common side effects include muscle spasms, nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach, abdominal pain, throat pain, dizziness, and neck pain.

Please see a brief summary of safety information on the next page.

You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Do not take additional estrogens, progestins, or estrogen agonists/antagonists while taking DUAVEE. Using estrogen may increase your chance of getting cancer of the uterus. Report any unusual vaginal bleeding right away while taking DUAVEE. Vaginal bleeding after menopause may be a warning sign of cancer of the uterus. A healthcare provider should check unusual vaginal bleeding to fi nd the cause. Do not use estrogens to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, or dementia.Estrogens may increase the chance of getting blood clots or strokes.Using estrogens may increase the chance of getting dementia, based on a study of women 65 years of age or older.

IMPORTANT FACTS (DEW’ ah-vee)

ABOUT DUAVEETM

DUAVEE is a prescription medicine that contains a mixture of estrogens and bazedoxifene.

DUAVEE is used after menopause for women with a uterus to:• reduce moderate-to-severe hot fashes. Very uncomfortable

symptoms, such as feelings of warmth in the face, neck, and chest, or sudden intense episodes of heat and sweating (hot fashes)

• help reduce your chances of developing osteoporosis (thin, weak bones). If you use DUAVEE only to prevent osteoporosis due to menopause, talk with your healthcare provider about whether a different treatment or medicine without estrogens

might be better for you

DUAVEE should be taken for the shortest time possible and only for as long as treatment is needed.

You and your healthcare provider should talk regularly about whether you still need treatment with DUAVEE.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF DUAVEE Serious side effects include: • blood clots • stroke • heart attack • cancer of the lining of the uterus • breast cancer • cancer of the ovary • dementia • gallbladder problems • loss of vision • high blood pressure • increased fats in your blood • liver problems • thyroid problems • fuid retention • low calcium • swelling of your mouth or tongue • worsening of other medical problems such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, migraines, a genetic problem called porphyria, lupus, and liver problems

Less serious but common side effects include: • muscle spasms • nausea • diarrhea • upset stomach • abdominal pain • throat pain • dizziness • neck pain

Call your healthcare provider right away if you get any of the following warning signs, or any other unusual symptoms that concern you:• new breast lumps • unusual vaginal bleeding • changes in vision or speech • sudden new severe headaches • severe pains in your chest or legs with or without shortness of breath, weakness, and fatigue

What can I do to lower my chances of a serious side effect with DUAVEE?• Talk with your healthcare provider regularly about

whether you should continue taking DUAVEE• See your healthcare provider right away if you get

vaginal bleeding while taking DUAVEE• Have a pelvic exam, breast exam, and mammogram

(breast X-ray) every year unless your healthcare provider tells you something else

• If members of your family have had breast cancer or if you have ever had breast lumps or an abnormal mammogram, you may need to have breast exams more often

• If you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol (fat in the blood), diabetes, are overweight, or if you use tobacco, you may have higher chances of getting heart disease

These are not all the possible side effects of DUAVEE. For more information, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

NEED MORE INFORMATION?• This information does not replace talking to your healthcare

provider about your menopausal symptoms and their treatment.• Visit DUAVEE.com or call 1-866-881-2545.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT DUAVEE?• Do not take additional estrogen products while you are

taking DUAVEE

• Using estrogens may increase your chance of getting cancer of the uterus (womb)

• Report any unusual vaginal bleeding right away while you are taking DUAVEE. Vaginal bleeding after menopause may be a warning sign of cancer of the uterus (womb). Your healthcare provider should check any unusual vaginal bleeding to fnd out the cause

• Do not use estrogens to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, or dementia (decline in brain function)

• Using estrogens may increase your chances of getting strokes or blood clots

• Using estrogens may increase your chance of getting dementia, based on a study of women 65 years of age or older

• You and your healthcare provider should talk regularly about whether you still need treatment with DUAVEE

DO NOT TAKE DUAVEE IF YOU• have or had blood clots • are allergic to estrogens or bazedoxifene, the active ingredients in DUAVEE, or any of its ingredients • have unusual vaginal bleeding • currently have or had certain cancers including cancer of the breast or uterus • currently have or had liver problems • have been diagnosed with a bleeding disorder • think you may be pregnant or may become pregnant • are breastfeeding a baby or plan to breastfeed

BEFORE YOU TAKE DUAVEE Tell your healthcare provider if you:• have any unusual vaginal bleeding• have any other medical conditions. Your healthcare

provider may need to check you more carefully if you have certain conditions such as asthma (wheezing), epilepsy (seizures), diabetes, migraine, endometriosis, lupus, or problems with your heart, liver, thyroid, kidneys, or have high calcium levels in your blood

• are going to have surgery or will be on bed rest. Your healthcare provider will let you know if you need to stop taking DUAVEE

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Especially tell your healthcare provider if you take other hormonal medicines, including progestins or other medicines like DUAVEE.

ExpinedTHEY’RE CUTE, LOYAL, AND CHARMING.BUT WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON INSIDE THOSE FURRY LITTLE HEADS? By Alison Gwinn Cover images by Sarah Beth Photography

f men are from Mars and women are from Venus, then cats and dogs must come from Jupiter. How else to explain some of their, well, alien behaviors? Just what, exactly, is a dog thinking when he rolls around in some-

thing stinky? If a cat naps on a computer keyboard, is it because she’s expecting an email? We went to the experts (the human kind!) for answers.

MY DOG SEEMS TO RUN

IN HIS SLEEP. COULD

HE BE DREAMING?

Perhaps. “We can’t really ask them,” says veterinar-

ian Melissa Bain, associate profes-sor at the UC Davis School of Vet-erinary Medicine, “but we think they dream.” That’s because their brain-wave patterns resemble those seen in people. “Dogs go through sleep cycles very similar to humans’, with periods of deep sleep and periods of rapid eye movement, or REM, sleep,” says Stephen Zawistowski, Ph.D., an

Your?

applied animal behaviorist and science adviser to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “Dreaming happens during REM sleep, which is also when dogs twitch their legs, move their lips, or vocalize.” Wonder when your own dog might be dreaming? As a dog starts to doze, and his sleep becomes deeper, his breathing will become more regular, says canine behavior expert Stanley Coren in his book How Dogs Think. “After a period of about 20 minutes,” Coren writes, “his first dream should start.”

WHY DO DOGS LIKE TO HAVE THEIR

BELLIES SCRATCHED? “Not all dogs like it, but for those that do, it’s a way of bonding,” says Sophia Yin, a veterinarian and applied animal

behaviorist in Davis, Calif. Besides which, Zawis-

towski says, “Dogs have a difficult time scratching some areas of their own bellies. Because they’re sensitive there, the greater agility of human fingers is probably more pleasant than their own toenails.” But remember, Bain says, when a dog rolls over, “that can also be a sign of fear.” If you approach a

WHY CAN

A CAT ALWAYS

LAND ON ITS

“Cats have a very flexible spine that allows them to twist in the air and right themselves as they fall,” says Zawistowski. “But cats can injure themselves quite severely if they fall from high places. Every year, vets treat [many] cats that fall from win-dows in upper floors of apartment buildings. This is so common that it has a name, ‘high rise syndrome,’ due to the consistent na-ture of the injuries.”

do dogs and cats have a sense of humor? according to the experts we spoke to,

studies have not yet been done to assess pets’ sense of humor. but if we’re talking about a sense of fun, then the answer is yes. We humans so prize fun in dogs, we’ve ranked the breeds on a playfulness scale. among those at the top: irish setters, english springer spaniels, airedales, min-iature schnauzers, and poodles. as for cats, says jackson galaxy, host of animal planet’s My Cat From Hell,“the fact that cats live willingly with us is proof positive they have a sense of humor!”

As for smelly places, Zawistowski says “nice” is in the nose of the beholder. “While rotting fish may not smell great to you, to your dog—de-scended from critters that scavenged for meals—it probably smells as good as fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. Rolling in it is just a way to en-joy it all the more.”

What gives? Catnip, a member of the mint family, con-tains a substance called nepetalactone that stimulates some, but not all, cats. “About one-third to one-half of all cats are sensitive to it,” says Zawistowski. “They’ll respond by rolling in it and acting intoxi-cated.” Unfortunately for Kitty, the catnip high lasts only about 15 minutes.

why does my dog like to smell other dogs’ behinds? Phero-mones produced in

11 Why dO cats like

tO nap sO much?

Cats typically sleep 12 to 16 hours a day, and because they’re crepus-cular, meaning they hunt at dawn or dusk,

they can be more active at night. But house cats don’t necessarily need—or want—to sleep as much as they do, says Yin. “How much a cat sleeps has a lot to do with how stim-ulating its environment is.” To cure Bored Cat Syndrome—the real name for this forced kitty ennui—provide your cat with toys, tiered cat trees, and cat tunnels when you’re gone, and bubbles, lasers, and fishing pole–type “prey toys” when you’re home and can play with her.

can dogs and cats get colds from us? Dogs and cats can get colds, with the same miserable symptoms (sneezing, coughing, watery

eyes) we get, but they don’t catch them from us. Most viruses are unique to a species; whereas our common cold is caused primarily by the rhinovirus, most dog colds come from Bordetella bacteria or canine flu viruses, and most cat colds are due to feline herpes, caliciviruses, or Bordetella bacteria. Nonetheless, recently researchers have expressed concern

about “reverse zoonosis,” in which humans pass diseases to animals through mutations and new viral forms. So if you are under the weather, rather than snuggling up with Fluffy, keep your distance—for her safety.

Legal Notice

There is a $19 million Settlement with Twin America, LLC, Coach USA, Inc., International Bus Services, Inc., CitySights LLC, and City Sights Twin, LLC (together called the “Defendants”).

The lawsuit claims that Coach and CitySights conspired to form a joint venture, Twin America, against state and federal law. The lawsuit claims that this new company dominated the “hop-on, hop-off” bus tour business in New York City enabling the Defendants to fx ticket prices and reduce competition – resulting in higher ticket prices for customers. The Defendants deny that they did anything wrong.

Who is included in the Settlement?Generally, the Settlement includes anyone who bought Gray Line or CitySights “hop-on, hop-off” bus tours in New York City from February 1, 2009 until June 16, 2014.

What does the Settlement provide? The Settlement Fund will pay Class Members up to $20 per eligible Hop-On, Hop-Off ticket. The cost to administer the Settlement as well as attorney fees and the payments to the Class Representatives will come out of the Settlement Fund.

If You Bought Gray Line or CitySights “Hop-On, Hop-Off” Bus Tours in New York City

You Could Get a Refund Up to $20 Per Ticket

If there is any money left in the Settlement Fund after claims, costs, and taxes have been paid, it will be given to the Department of Justice, Antitrust Division, and/or the New York Attorney General’s Offce.

How can I get a payment?File a claim online or by mail no later than January 19, 2015.

What are my rights?Even if you do nothing you will be bound by the Court’s decisions. If you want to keep your right to sue the Defendants yourself, you must exclude yourself from the Settlement Class by September 5, 2014. If you stay in the Settlement Class, you may object to the Settlement by September 5, 2014.

The Court will hold a hearing on October 20, 2014 to consider whether to approve the Settlement and a payment of attorneys’ fees up to one-third of the Settlement Fund, plus reimbursement of expenses, and a special service payment of $20,000 each to two Class Representatives. You or your own lawyer may appear and speak at the hearing at your own expense.
