Does starring in Girlfriends’ Guide
to Divorce give newlywed Lisa
Edelstein second thoughts about
marriage?—Peter A., Burbank
A: No, but the former House star, 48, who married for the first time in May of this year, says she has firsthand experience when it comes to divorce: Her husband, artist Robert Russell, was in the middle of a marital breakup when she met him. She says her new show—which airs Tuesday nights on Bravo—is "super smart, honest storytelling.” SC

WALTER SCOTT ASKS...
Stowe, 56, took a break from playing Victoria Grayson on ABC’s Revenge to take on a subject that strikes close to home: multiple sclerosis. This is the first time you have spoken out publicly
about multiple sclerosis. Why now?
“My father suffered from it from the time I was very young and he had a very rapid progression of the disease. MS was very hopeless when I was a child.”
What do you hope people take away from
Genzyme’s Lights, Camera, Take Action on MS
campaign? “We’re going to be having a series of meetings around the country with MS patients and their caretakers. It’s my hope that they can become more informed about their options.”
You’ve had some heavy confrontations with costar
Emily VanCamp on Revenge. When you finish a
scene like that, do you laugh to break the tension?
“Sometimes it’s emotional, because after four years of playing these characters, you start to take on [their] darkness a little bit.”
What is on your bucket list of things still to do?
“I would really like to go to Patagonia. I would really like to flamenco dance. My daughter [May] is a great flamenco dancer. I would like to learn more about
that culture. My family all descends from Spain.”
Q: I loved John
Schneider on Dukes
of Hazzard. Now I’m
enjoying him on The
Haves and the Have
Nots, but he plays quite
a conniver. What’s
the appeal of such an
unscrupulous guy?
—Julie N., Louisville
A: Schneider, 54, went from sweet hunk Bo Duke on Dukes of Hazzard to devious Judge Jim Cryer on The Haves and the Have Nots (Tuesday nights on OWN), created, written and directed by movie-TV mogul Tyler Perry. “I come from a long line of sarcastic people,” he says. “We’re not mean, but we’re fairly witty. So when I get to turn that guy free as Jim Cryer, I even make Tyler Perry look out from behind the monitor and
go, ‘Oh my, gosh—did you reallysay that?’”
3 Highlights of
ANDY COHEN’S ‘Shallow’ Year
The host of Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live gets
ready for 2015 by taking stock of 2014 in his new
book, The Andy Cohen Diaries: A Deep Look at a
Shallow Year.
1. Cohen, 46, rescued and fell in love with a beagle/
foxhound mixed breed, which he named
Wacha, after St. Louis Cardinals pitcher
Michael Wacha.
2. A baseball fanatic, he
faced his fear of looking inept and played in a Major League Baseball
celebrity game.
3. He hung out with Sarah Jessica Parker on
Broadway, Madonna on a cross-country flight, and
attended Carnival in Rio
de Janeiro with CNN’s
Anderson Cooper.Email your questions for Walter Scott to

rowing up in his hometown of Dunwoody, Ga., Ryan
Seacrest fantasized about joining the revelers in Times
Square on New Year’s Eve.
“I thought, ‘Someday I am going to drive up there and watch
the ball drop,’” he says. Seacrest never imagined that when he
finally made it to Times Square in 2005, it would be as co-host of
the iconic New Year’s Rockin’ Eve live broadcast alongside Dick
Clark.
Now, with Clark’s death in 2012, Seacrest is ringmaster of the
year’s biggest bash, a gig that caps off his “day” jobs hosting TV’s
American Idol and two Los Angeles-based syndicated radio
shows.
With Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest
2015, airing on ABC on Dec. 31 from
8 p.m. to 1 a.m. ET, the Emmy-winning
producer and red-carpet mainstay con-
tinues to pay homage to Clark—and as
always, heeds his sage advice.
“I asked him, ‘What is the key to
making this show work?’ ” Seacrest, 39, says. “He said,
‘Remember that a lot of people aren’t going any-
where; you are bringing the party into their homes.
You are making sure that they feel like they are a
part of everything.’”

the commentary. During that same conversation, Seacrest recalls, Clark said, “‘No one wants to hear your voice at 12 o’ clock. All they want to do is listen to the sounds in Times Square and look at the faces. You can start talking at 12:02, but from 12:00 to 12:02, shut up.’ I thought that was really funny—and right.”
The likeable on-air personality whose pro-duction company created the TV hits Keeping Up with the Kardashians, met Clark during Ameri-can Idol ’s second season, and for a dozen years, Seacrest absorbed his idol’s wise counsel.
“In the beginning, what drove me was to be able to make enough to pay my rent pursuing something that I love to do,” he says. “Now my motivation is to put on great shows and try and maintain some sort of balance in my life.”
For years, he wouldn’t stop for lunch, so he would eat while stand-ing, walking or meeting with others. “Now I real-ize that it’s OK to take a second,” says Seacrest, who remains a bachelor.
So, how would he celebrate if he weren’t hosting the world’s biggest New Year’s Eve party? “I’d do something on a much smaller scale,” Seacrest says. “A small dinner at home with my family and friends. Nothing too crazy!”

OLD-SCHOOL NEW YORK BASH
Just blocks from Times Square, legendary New York restaurant Le Cirque will com-memorate New Year’s Eve with a menu fea-turing classic French food and live music from Neil Sedaka. Co-owner Marco Mac-cioni advises bringing elegance to your home party by inviting guests to dress their best. “As a boy, I could not come to Le Cirque un-less I was wearing my jacket and tie. Dressing up is part of the excitement,” he says.
DrinkSet up a champagne bar: Place ice buckets filled with champagne on a table and line up an array of liqueurs. Add a few drops to a flute of sparkling champagne to make these celebratory spirits just like they do at Le Cirque:Kir Royale: Champagne and crème de cassisFireworks Imperiale: Champagne and Chambord “Strawberry” French 75: Champagne and Fragoli Wild Strawberry Liqueur
EatBegin the night with cheese platters combining soft, semi-soft, firm, blue and fresh cheeses paired with thinly sliced baguette and grapes. Shrimp cocktail is swanky and easy to prepare using precooked shrimp. Pre-made crab cakes only re-quire heating. New Zealand lamb loin chops are an incredible value at Costco—grill or broil with salt, pepper and fresh rosemary.
PlaySpin tunes by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole, or stream swing station WKHR in Cleveland, Ohio, to hear big band jazz.
GiveOutfit guests with celebrity event planner Mary Giuliani’s “Hangover Preparedness Kits”—a wine gift bag filled with everything they will need to make the next day a touch brighter: coconut water, Advil, a soothing eye mask and lip balm.
Ryan Seacrest doesn’t have many New Year’s Eve memo-ries that don’t involve Dick Clark, whether it was watching him host his famed show as a boy or joining him on-camera as an adult.
“One of my most memorable moments in Times Square was after the first year that I had hosted with Clark, who suffered a stroke the year before [in 2004]. I wasn’t sure what to ex-pect,” he says. “I wanted to do everything I could to give him everything he needed, consid-ering how he was feeling, so I was nervous about accomplish-ing that.
“When we finished, he gave me this long look in the eye and told me to come over. I came over and he looked at me again and gave me this really big, warm hug. He leaned into my ear and said thank you. It was at that point that I realized that he felt good about the night and that I may have the opportunity to do this again.”

FAMILY-FRIENDLY FESTIVITIES
“As kids, my brother and I loved New Year’s Eve because my grand-
mother babysat us and my mother always bought us hors d’oeuvres,”
says Marcy Blum, whose New York-based event planning compa-
ny’s clients include Billy Joel, and Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick.
“It was the only night of the year we had them—and on trays, no
less!” At this all-ages fete, Blum suggests giving kids their own space
“turned into something a bit glamorous.”
EatServe food the whole family will enjoy: Mini pigs in blankets, tiny
vegetable egg rolls and 3-inch round pizzas are all available frozen
at the supermarket. “If you fancy up your trays with flowers or rib-
bon, the kids will flip!” Blum says. Another sure win is a “make your
own” station, such as a taco bar.
DrinkBubbly is crucial: Raspberry
ginger ale, sparkling ciders or
sparkling fruit sodas all
work, “if they are served in
plastic champagne flutes, of
course,” says Blum.
PlayVisit commonsensemedia.org to find New Year’s-themed, family-
friendly movies: Rudolph’s Shiny New Year (3 and older), Sleepless in Seattle (11 and older), While You Were Sleeping (11 and older) and
The Poseidon Adventure (13 and older).
MakeSally Schneider of Improvisedlife.com suggests everyone make a
noisemaker: Put a few tablespoons of rice or beans in a plastic cup,
top with another cup, lip-to-lip, seal with tape and decorate.

MIDNIGHT BREAKFAST DANCE PARTY
Mary Giuliani, who has organized celebrations for the Rolling
Stones, Stella McCartney and Carolina Herrera, likes to keep
things cozy on the big night. Her pajamas-optional theme
evokes the best of the morning after.
EatIn addition to bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches, serve mini
waffles and breakfast sausages. Or try a “Hash Bash” (such as
the one pictured at right) with store-bought frozen hash browns.
“Line up mason jars with forks and have guests build their own
hash mash. Guests can spoon in sautéed onions, red pepper, sau-
sage and hot sauce to their liking,” Giuliani suggests.
DrinkThe Mimosa: Mix champagne or other sparkling wine (or fizzy
cider for designated drivers) in a 1:1 ratio with fresh-squeezed
orange juice.
PlayLet’s face it: Once you roll up the carpet and get ready to
groove, the dance music you like will usually depend on the decade you were born. iTunes makes finding just
what you want easy: Simply search by decade (i.e. ,“70s Dance”).
GiveSend guests home with a pancake party favor: Fill extra mason jars with dry pancake mix, such as Whole Foods’
simple recipe for scrumptious Cinnamon Pancakes. Visit parade.com/cinnamonpancakes to find printable jar labels.Decorate each jar with a circle of iridescent tulle under the lid, then tie with ribbon.

If you find yourself feeling a wee bit under the weather come New Year’s Day, we have just the tonic: This Bloody Mary recipe from New York’s St. Regis Hotel, which counts itself among the many purported originators of the cocktail, along with the legendary drinking hole Harry’s New York Bar in Paris.
ST. REGIS BLOODY MARY MIXJuice of 1 lemon
3 cups tomato juice
3 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
3 dashes Tabasco
1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp celery salt
1 tsp whole black peppercorns
Pour ingredients into a container and shake well. Use immediately or refrigerate. Strain peppercorns be-fore using. Makes enough for 3 drinks. To prepare one drink, fill glass with ice and add 1 oz vodka, 11 oz Bloody Mary mix, and garnish with lemon.
Why, after even one sip of an
alcoholic beverage, do my
nose and cheeks turn red?
I have maybe one drink a
week but don’t enjoy draw-
ing this kind of attention to
myself!
—P. H., Fort Wayne, Ind.
I’m sure you’ve heard of lac-tose intolerance, an inherited condition that occurs when a person lacks a certain enzyme needed to digest milk and other dairy prod-ucts. Well, you’re describing a classic case of alcohol intolerance, which is also inherited and very common. With this condition, one is missing a particular enzyme required to process alcohol efficiently, resulting in symp-toms that range from mild to severe. (Nausea, a drop in blood pressure and a rapid heartbeat may also occur.) Check with your doctor to see if the situation applies to you and what steps you could take, if any.

On New Year’s
Day, 1969, two
buddies and I
ran five miles to
the Long Island
Sound near our home-
town of Mystic, Conn.,
and then plunged into
its icy waters. We saw
this as an act of rebel-
lion, a radical aerobic
protest against the day’s
empty resolutions. What
can I say? This was the
1960s, and we 20-some-
things were all demon-
strating against one
thing or another.
What started as a whim has
become a ritual: Almost 50 years
later, I’m still running and swim-
ming on Jan. 1. But I’m no
longer protesting, I’m celebrat-
ing—my health, my friendships,
my many other blessings.
That first time, we weren’t
sure we would survive the
plunge. I recall the knot in my
throat as I raced across the
beach, the sharp prick of frozen
sand against my bare feet. We
recovered by screaming as loud
as we could, cramming into my
VW bug with its heater blasting,
and slurping hot soup in a
friend’s kitchen.
In recent years, despite our
deliberate disorganization—no
entry form or fee, no website, no
Facebook page or Twitter
feed—our little duathlon of sorts
has drawn a ragtag group of over
200 participants, roughly ages 8
to 80. Some are still tipsy from
the previous night’s antics, some
are nearly naked high school kids
in Speedos, bikinis and body
Views
Run, Swim, RenewHow an act of rebellion became an annual
New Year’s Day celebration of health, friendship & blessings. By Amby Burfoot
paint, and some are regulars like
Jan, the giant Scotsman, who
runs in a kilt.
Along the running route,
hundreds of locals welcome us
with hearty “Happy New Year”
greetings. We reply in kind, and
much louder.
The group hangs tight until
we’re just a block from the
beach, where the youngsters
break ranks to sprint toward the
frigid sound. They dash
single-file through a paparazzi-
like gauntlet of folks with smart-
phones who capture the
madness in photos and video.
We older, more wizened
participants slow to a walk.
What’s the hurry?
I can’t say for sure what others
think about our footrace/Polar
Bear Plunge. For me, it’s become
my favorite day of the year: I get
to act like a child, festooning
myself in Hawaiian leis and
tooting on horns. I see old
acquaintances, often for the only
time all year. I immerse myself
in freezing, 38-degree Jan. 1
waters, a baptismal if there ever
were one. I give thanks for my
family’s health, and my own.
Nothing is guaranteed
at this point. I am in my
late 60s, so I know this
too well.
Last November, I
came down with a rare
bacterial infection. Many
days I could barely get
out of bed. Websites
termed the condition
“potentially fatal.”
As Jan. 1 approached,
I mustered enough
resolve to attempt the
run, but decided to pass
on the swim—for the
first time ever.
I showed up at the start, and
settled quietly into the middle of
the pack. It felt comforting,
familiar. As we approached the
shore, my mood brightened even
more. I slowly shed my sweats
and shoes. A moment later, I
bolted helter-skelter into the
waves. Just like every other year.
My wife has long treasured an
Isak Dinesen quote: “The cure for
anything is saltwater: sweat, tears,
or the sea.” In this case, it worked:
On Jan. 3, my illness lifted.
I don’t know what will happen
at this year’s event. We could get
smacked by a Polar Vortex or
need ice axes to hack through
frozen floes. Whatever.
I only know that I will be
there, to run and swim. And that
afterwards, I will feel resilient,
connected, energetic, optimistic.
I can’t imagine starting the
