cause of corruption, and the only solution to preempt it– vigilance. For the day we stop ask-ing questions to those accountable, the worm inherent in power will manifest itself. Manju-nath Shanmugam ques-tioned authority in a sys-tem that has grown ac-customed to having its own way, and had to pay with his life as a penalty. It is our duty to ensure that what he began does not die out, that we re-member not only the man, but the idea.

For, as Alan Moore said, ‘ideas are bulletproof’. That, and much more, in this edition of the Parable. Vigilance Week celebra-tions, Candle-light march and all that happened at IIM Ranchi. We wish you a happy reading, and a quote by George Bernanos to bear in mind for this edition, and his life. “The first sign of corruption in a society that is still alive is that the end justifies the

means.”

The students of IIM Ran-chi on the 19th of Novem-ber participated in a can-dlelight march to demon-strate solidarity for the late Manjunath Shanmugam, and to demonstrate their support and tireless efforts to make a corruption-free India. The Manjunath Shanmu-gam Trust, a pan IIM initi-ative, organizes this every year across all IIMs and other major B-schools across the country on the Remembrance Day of Manjunath Shanmugam, an IIM Lucknow alumnus who was working as a manager at IOCL when he

was murdered for sealing a petrol station in Lakhim-pur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh for selling adulterated fuel. The death of a talented young manager, who only had his duty in mind is a stark reminder to us of the multiple layers of corrup-tion that mire our society. On the occasion of this day, Samarpan, the Social Responsibility Club of IIM Ranchi, organized a can-dlelight vigil at our Khelga-on premises. Students marched silently, candles in hand, through the cam-pus. The proceedings were followed by the taking of the Pledge of Integrity,

and the National Anthem, as our students vowed to weed out corruption from all levels of society. Let’s hope this pledge spurs everyone to strain every nerve, sinew and muscle to destroy those vested interests that drag our country and stop it from reaching the potential it surely can. As members of a premier institute, our students have demonstrat-ed that they have not only business acumen, but a keen sense of social re-sponsibility as well, and this will serve the nation well in the future.

The Central Vigilance Com-mission along with the HRD Ministry launched the ‘Vigilance Awareness Week’ Campaign to promote probity and integrity in governance by creating public awareness against corruption. It is truly fitting that ‘The Vigilance Awareness Week’ coincides with the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, a man of unshakable personal integ-rity.

IIM Ranchi joined the cam-paign against corruption by organizing events for students on October 30th, 2015. The Literary Club of IIM Ranchi conducted an intra-college Debate and Elocution compe-tition on the theme of Preven-tive Vigilance to support this initiative.

The first event for the evening was the elocution competition, which saw enthusiastic partic-ipation by the students and some impressive analysis,

insights, and suggestions on how to bring about positive changes. The debate competi-tion that followed set the stage for some fierce arguments among the students who spoke for and against the top-ics ‘Vigilance is the Sole Re-sponsibility of the Govern-ment’ and ‘Whistle-blowers - A Social Blessing or a Selfish Quest’.

Mr. Priya Ranjan Kumar, Manager, Vigilance for Central Coal Fields Limited was the chief guest for the pro-gramme. He explained that public awareness against cor-ruption was the need of the hour and that students of IIM Ranchi should uphold honesty and integrity in every step of their journey.

The various viewpoints and suggestions that emerged out of these competitions clearly emphasized the importance of having a platform to discuss important issues like Vigilance and the importance of having healthy debate and conversa-tions around them.

Christmas Celebrations

A few moons before Christ-mas, a tiny mob of students were seen excitedly shuffling between blocks in Khelgaon, wearing their furry Santa hats on a cold winter night. It began with the farthest Blocks of 3, 4 and 5, where the group set in motion their in-tent of spreading the festive mood with carols, going to every floor and waking up the sleepy and the lazy with their songs, who eventually joined the troupe. People sang fa-mous carols like Joy to the World, Wish You a Merry Christmas, Jingle Bells and A Long Time Ago in Bethle-hem while Nabarun and Deepak played their guitars. Shalini dressed up as Santa, distributing cake and choco-late to everyone.

The next evening, Blocks 10, 11, 12 and B resonated with the songs of the choir.

A Christmas tree was put up in the common area, decorated with lights and stars, and gift boxes.

The celebrations concluded with all the students gathering in the Recreation Room for cake and a warm cup of hot chocolate, their hearts happy that winter had begun and holidays were closing in.

and most importantly, of learn-

ing from them. It’s enticing to

know that you have the free-

dom to speak your mind and

bring your ideas out in the open

without being judged. This at-

mosphere of dialogue is so

deeply ingrained in the very

fabric of this wonderful place,

that a ninety minute classroom

session without at least a couple

of arguments and clashing ideas

is unusual.

With 2016 ahead of us, I wish

for each of us to make a start

on the things we love, the

things we have been putting off

It’s the time of the year for

resolutions. Everywhere there is

fresh enthusiasm to get things

right this time around. Newspa-

pers and social media brim over

with stories of successes and

failures from last year. And

more often than not, we tend to

drool over the successes while

ignoring the latter.

As I write this, the roads and

the open area outside the hos-

tels are deserted, and there’s a

chill in the air. But there’s

warmth in thinking that at IIM

Ranchi, we understand the sig-

nificance of making mistakes,

for too long: writing, taking up

a tennis racquet, or picking up

that guitar and getting on stage.

Let’s stop falling prey to our

own fears and inhibitions. In-

stead, let's focus on chiselling

out our ideas and skills, bit by

bit, in pursuit of perfection.

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT, RANCHI

The ninth Indian Institute of Management was established at Ranchi in 2010. This was made possible

with the extensive support of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and the Government of Jhar-

khand, working under the guidance of Ministry of HRD, Government of India.

We started at a time when competition and aggression was prevalent in management education. Understand-

ing the need to incorporate right values in young minds, IIMR was started to incorporate right values in

young minds and impart education for the information age that encourages networking and collaborative

advantage.

IIM Ranchi currently offers a two year PGDM in General management and another two year fulltime

programme on Human Resources Management (PGDHRM), Fellow Program in Management and 18

month part time Diploma in Management (PGEXP).

Our Programs are different and we are an institute with a difference.
