The major task of the ARSENAL system is to use your ballistic files in the most efficient way in order to make a through examination and to obtain the most reliable results in a shortest possible time. It is obvious, that the core of the solution consists in automation and computeri-zation of the identification operations, and this task cannot be solved without using state-of-the-art technologies. The ARSENAL system possesses all necessary tools for that. ARSENAL is a modern power-ful computer system capable to automate the whole procedure of examination of bullets, car-tridge cases and their fragments: from data en-try and creation of electronic database, match-ing and split-screen verification to results of comparisons conducted.

ARSENAL ABIS is dedicated to• Creating automated databases for rifled fire-arms booked in law-enforcement agencies• Creating automated databases for bullets andcartridge cases captured at crime scenes• Basing and filing the records of evolvents of bul-lets’ leading surface and marks on cartridge cases• Computerizing searches against databases• Comparing bullets or cartridge cases side-by-side• Automating the documenting of examination results• Interregional data exchange

Functionality of ARSENAL ABISThe ARSENAL ABIS automates the following tasks:• Scanning entire bullet and cartridge casesides, cartridge case head, marks capturedfrom shell fragments and deformed bullets• Captures cartridge case head images usinglighting in sectors. This method of scanningmakes some characteristic marks (firing pin-impressions, breechface marks, ejector marks)to look more legible than they are when beingcaptured by ring lighting• Automatically determining location of driven edgeand leading edge impressions in an evolvent record• Interactively locating unique impressions (stri-ations) on a bullet and cartridge case side• Automatically determining significant markslocation on a cartridge case head with the pos-sibility of human-aided correction

• Encoding significant marks in a cartridge casehead record:- Firing pin impression- Breech face marking on a primer- Ejector mark• Encoding unique impressions on the surface of a bullet• Encoding significant marks on the side surfaceof a cartridge case:- Extractor hook mark- Slide hole mark- Magazine edge mark at loading and ejecting- Chamber wall mark- Barrel rear part edge mark- Cartridge insertion mark- Breech lower edge mark• Automatically searching against database files• Providing candidate lists (recommended listsof possible matches) as determined by thematching process• Side-be-side visual comparison of images usingmethods of correlation, alignment and overlay• Storing records in database utilizing the WSQimage compression method• Viewing a pseudo-3D image and cross sectionof a cartridge case head to visually reveal detailsof a firing pin shape• Originating graphic illustrations of high quality• Integration into any network• Remote input of images and remote access toCentral Database• Import/export image in TIFF-format via com-munication lines supporting IP-connection
