MAR 2011MAR 2011PAOSNewsPAOSNewsFrom the President’s DeskHello everyone!

It seems that the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil was rightwhen he came out of his cave last February 2 and predictedsix more weeks of winter. We sure had a cold and long onethis year.

But how do you like those blooms? I bet you agree with methat this is one of the most beautiful times of the year…Everywhere you look you see blooming orchids.

This weekend we will participate in the Fairchild TropicalGardens Orchid Show with a table top display. We also had a table promoting our society andrecruiting new members. I would like to thank inadvance all the Board Members that help set upthe display and volunteered at the recruiting table.

Next weekend, March 19 & 20, we will be con-ducting our first Conservation Project of theyear, by placing orchids on trees at Pinecrest Gar-dens. It will take place between 9:00 am andnoon both days. Try to arrive early, especiallySunday, to avoid the parking lot rush. We en-courage you to bring refreshments and suggestthat you bring enough for 2-3 people so we canall share.

This month’s speaker will be our good friend andgreat grower Dr. Ruben P. Sauleda. Ruben wasrecently featured in the Herald during the Tami-ami International Orchid Festival where he lec-tured on orchid care. For PAOS, he will be speak-ing on Orchids of Colombia.

We will see you at the meeting!

MAR 2011MAR 2011PAOSNewsPAOSNewsThis year the Pan American Orchid Society’s Auction will be heldon Tuesday, April 12. Please notice this is not on our regular meetingnight, but the week before and the event starts at 7:00 p.m.

Our Auction is our major fundraiser for the year and we count on allmembers’ support to make our event the best ever.

There are always wonderful plants to bid on, and orchids make theperfect gift for Mother’s Day, Passover, Easter, birthdays, house warmings, etc. You get the picture, so come andalso bring your friends. We will gladly accept per-sonal checks from our members and guests, butwe cannot take credit cards.

We ask that each member bring a guest to en-sure a turn out we can be proud of. This meetingalso counts toward a member’s total attendancerequirement for holiday plants, so you do notwant to miss it.

Our Auction is a special PAOS event and allmembers are expected to contribute to the re-freshments table. We will also accept your assis-tance with set up and clean up to speed upthose processes. Contributions can be fruit plat-ters, cheese platters, dips, chips, nuts, fingersandwiches– they are all popular besides theusual cakes and cookies.

We expect this year’s auction to be spectacularand count on your green fingers to supplementour tables. We are asking all members to con-tribute one or two duplicates from their collec-tions. Plants in bloom sell best of all, specially ifthey are properly staged. PAOS has set up twostaging sites for your convenience:

Gail Weber’s home:15410 SW 78th Court, Palmetto Bay,telephone 305-378-9987Candy McDonald’s home:14520 SW 79th Avenue,telephone 305-389-0720

Plants should be delivered at the staging sites byApril 10 when they will be cleaned, prepared forshowing and catalogued. The list will be made available prior to the auction to assist in promoting attendance. Ityou cannot bring your plant to the staging site, let us know what you are planning to bring, and drop it off at thechurch one hour prior to the event.

Let’s all do our best to make this year’s Pan American Orchid Society’s Auction EXCEPTIONAL!

MAR 2011MAR 2011PAOSNewsPAOSNewsThis Month at PAOS

“Orchids from Colombia” is the theme of RubenSauleda’s presentation at PAOS this month.More than an orchid aficionado, Ruben earned aPh.D. in orchid taxonomy – one more declara-tion of love for the resilient and delicate plants. In his presentation he will be sharing experi-ences form his trip in Bogotá, Colombia, includ-ing the 2010 Orchid Show.

According to Ruben, orchids need only fourthings: water, fertilizer, air and light. Those are the main ingredients for hissuccess. And you can witness it at Ruben in Orchids’ new location, a 6,400sqft greenhouse. Among the rarities found there are the ghost orchid, a SouthFlorida native, and the chocolate orchid, native of Cuba and the Cayman Is-lands. But it is his Ruben Verde that aficionados look for the most.

We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting, Tuesday, March 15.

MAR 2011MAR 2011PAOSNewsPAOSNewsAOS CornerSPRING FORWARD! We are always reminded of this catchphrase as we approach the beginning of Daylight SavingsTime. You might also use it as a reminder to spring forward --i.e. stepping up during National Volunteer Month (April).

The rewards of volunteerism are abundant but perhaps thebiggest payoff is the satisfaction of knowing you have contrib-uted your time, talent and energy to a good cause. In addi-tion, it provides social activity where you are with other like-minded people sharing a common bond or passion. Certainlythe orchid world is filled with volunteer opportunities at yourlocal society level or within the regional and national organizations to which you belong. You might considertaking refreshments to your society meeting, exhibiting your blooming plants or greeting visitors at a localorchid show or helping to repot orchids at a nearby botanical garden. All regional and national orchid or-ganizations need volunteers to serve on committees or to assist in planning meetings or speaker days. TheAmerican Orchid Society depends on national volunteers to serve on the many committees that make theorganization function and prosper. Our entire judging system is made up of dedicated volunteers whospend years preparing for and later conducting the business of the many judging centers around the coun-try in such a professional manner. Please consider being a volunteer.

SPRING TIME IS PRIMETIME FOR ORCHID SHOWS! Check the AOS site (www.aos.org) for an updated list-ing of orchid shows and events. Get involved if your society is hosting a show….you will enjoy the back-stage peek at what it takes to produce these events. If you can’t volunteer your time at a show, you cansupport local shows by attending to listen and learn from the speakers and workshops plus shopping to sup-port the show’s vendors.
