Re-structure at Homag takes sales and service to new levels

Homag UK undertook a major internal re-

structuring for the start of 2009 which sees

Simon Brooks appointed as Sales Director.

Managing Director Paul Cooper will add the

re-organisation and day-to-day operation of the

service division to his portfolio while After Sales

Director Paul Newman will continue in his role

but operate on a much more one-to-one basis

with key customers.

Paul Cooper says that he gained significant

experience in the area of servicing during his

year away in the robotics industry: “We are

dealing with highly sophisticated machines from

the bottom up here at Homag. Above all else

I have learned about and seen the enormous

value of preventative maintenance and we will

be pro-actively putting programs for this in place

for all our customers. The cost of downtime is

often significant and preventative maintenance

can offer huge savings over re-active service,

we have also introduced significant in-house

investment in remote diagnostics and problem

identifications. This, coupled with a streamlined

spare parts operation and engineering

scheduling, will offer our customers a level of

service that will be unprecedented and a level

above anything that exists in the UK today.”

Under Simon Brooks Homag UK’s sales

operation will also be re-targeted and re-

organised for greater efficiency and ensuring

that customers not only get a fast response to

enquiries, but will be actively provided with the

latest news and information on technical

developments from the Homag Group. Simon

brings valuable experience to the position

having had many years selling Homag Group

machines and, before that, extensive

experience in production at all levels including

responsibility for all CNC machinery operations

at one of the UK’s largest joinery groups before

being recruited to Homag.

The new structure at Homag UK is designed

with a single focus in mind – to give UK and

Irish customers a superior sales and service

experience after investing in cutting edge

technology.

Taylor Made Joinery Interiors Limited based in Suffolk is

arguably one of the UK’s most prolific and specialist

joinery and interior fit-out manufacturers.

Established in 1981 by Gordon and James Taylor, TMJ started

with just 2 joiners with initial trade being dedicated to the local building

companies who they serviced with made to measure joinery work

including windows, doors, stairs, kitchens and general cabinetry.

From those early days TMJ has evolved into one of the largest

joinery manufacturers with a workforce in excess of 130 personnel

and a manufacturing facility consisting of some 36,000 square feet.

The clients of today not only include work from refurbishment to the

private residential customer but also many of the ‘bluechip’

companies from the financial, investment and banking and software

industries. Common to all is the stringent requirement for quality

workmanship, actual completion timescales with project management

and of course more bespoke designs.

TMJ is a forward thinking company which has excelled in all areas

and has consequently been awarded such lucrative contracts as the

refurbishment at Windsor Castle following the fire in 1992, and also

refurbishment work to the Royal Festival Hall as well as more recently,

the specialist joinery packages for Unilever, Henderson Global

Investors and DTZ.

The secret to this success is down to the ethos of the company

which is ‘To actively invest in its employees and resources is to

maximise quality and output’

In 2007 following much deliberation by management and

production personnel it was decided that one area which was in need

of addressing to improve productivity and quality was on the

calibration, pre sanding and finishing of both joinery and panel based

products. The result of this was the key figures including Mr James

Taylor and production director Mr Pat Coll visiting the international

woodworking machinery exhibition in Hannover, Germany. The

purpose of this visit was to view and assess the relevant machinery

which would be most suited to the strict criteria as set out by TMJ

and which would be able to perform within their busy environment.

One of the companies TMJ visited at the exhibition was Kundig

who had on display a number of wide belt sanding machines which

were initially demonstrated by Mr Stephan Kundig.

TMJ was already familiar with the Kundig machines as they had

a twin belt sanding machine installed in 1996 which was used by

any of the 35 members in the joinery workshop and had proved both

easy to use and exceptional in terms of reliability and accuracy.

The machines demonstrated not only consisted of the traditional

sanding heads for both calibration and for veneers but also the

Oblique sanding heads which were seen to avoid the inherent flaws

as experienced on all machines using traditional sanding heads where

the abrasive is mounted at 90 degrees to the travel of the work piece.

Following these demonstrations a meeting was arranged for the

following morning with a view to a more in depth discussion regarding

the actual requirements of TMJ. As specialist manufacturers and

innovators of wide belt and edge sanding machinery, Kundig were

able to assess what was required from a machine to fulfil the

requirements of TMJ. Following this assessment it was decided that

the main machine requirement was for the Veneer workshop which

needed to be able to calibrate raw MDF and door blanks prior to

veneering and also be able to pre sand the veneered panels prior

to lacquering.

In June 2007 key members from TMJ visited Kundig’s main

manufacturing headquarters just outside Zurich in Switzerland where

further trials were carried out on actual samples which were sent from

TMJ prior to their visit. These were then returned to TMJ for

examination and test once lacquered.

The initial assessment for a 5 head machine was wholly justified

and would offer TMJ the flexibility and time saving which they were

looking to achieve. The machine consisted of;

• 1st Head cross belt for the removal of veneer tape

• 2nd head calibration roller

• 3rd head Segmental pad for veneer sanding

• 4th head Oblique segmental pad for fine finishing

• 5th head bottom calibration roller

Following the trials and demonstrations of the machines with Oblique

sanding, a meeting was set at TMJ’s head office in Bildeston, Ipswich

where not only an order was placed for the new 5 head Kundig Botop

machine but also for a further lacquer sanding machine for the spray

shop. This second order was the result of the demonstrations and

final finish achieved from the Oblique sanding heads which offered

a far flatter and fibre free surface without any oscillation marks or

inherent flaws of the abrasive being transmitted to the finished surface

as is inherent on traditional sanding heads.

This second machine known as the Kundig V-Max 1350 was

equipped with 2 oblique sanding heads one set at + 10 degrees and

the other set at – 10 degrees to the travel of the work piece and

both giving a shear sanding action from 2 different directions.

Both machines were manufactured to exacting Swiss standards

and incorporated such features that sets Kundig apart from other

manufacturers. These include a static bed whereby the sanding group

raises and lowers accordingly and gives a fixed working height so

that the appropriate support can be offered to the infeed and outfeed

of the machine, hence reducing the need for a second operator. Also

included was the patented electronic Enormatic setting function which

measures the thickest part of the workpiece then the machine sets

itself to the desired finished size with the conveyor starting

automatically, all without the need for the operator to return to the

control panel.

This investment made in surface finishing technology places TMJ

at the forefront of today’s manufacturers specialising in bespoke

production requirements.

The new machines were delivered, off loaded, positioned and

commissioned to the timescales as set out by TMJ along with a large

quantity of abrasives also manufactured by Kundig to ensure the

utmost in surface finish.

Q&S Manufacturing is a typical producer of quality

carcase components for the kitchen, bedroom and

bathroom sectors who have created success and a

reputation for reliability and flexibility by investing in the right

equipment to give them these attributes.

Based in East Kilbride on the outskirts of Glasgow, Q&S’s William

Shannon approached Scotland’s leading machinery supplier, Deral,

to advise them on which machines to install. Deral is Homag UK’s

Scottish agent and John Clinton worked with William Shannon in

selecting the right equipment from the huge portfolio of Homag Group

equipment. Assessing the company’s current and future requirements,

the decision was made to supply a Weeke BHP200 CNC machining

centre equipped with a matrix table for clamping and fully capable

of producing cut and drilled panels from sheets on a nesting basis.

Deral also supplied a Brandt KDN210 single-sided edgebander

capable of applying coiled materials from 0.4mm to 3mm.

The Weeke BHP200 gives Q&S enormous flexibility through its

advanced Woodwop software which allows the operator to store

patterns and programs and quickly re-program the machine for drilling

and routing dimensions on a parametric basis. The O-TRIX matrix

bed allows full sheets to be clamped and the individual panels cut

out using a high speed milling tool on he main head before the drilling

and routing operations are completed in a single clamping. This

system of producing carcase components on a nesting basis obviates

the need for and space for a panel saw.

The Brandt KDN210, while one of the most compact machines

in the Brandt line-up, remains a high-tech edgebander with electronic

controls, in-line positioning of units and remote diagnostics.

William Shannon says that investing in the Homag Group machines

has given him significant new flexibility and capacity. At the moment

he can produce around 4 to 5 kitchens per week with scope for a

lot more. His customer base is now spreading across Scotland. He

says that an important part of making the decision to invest in the

Weeke and the Brandt was that Deral are local with an excellent

service and back-up division.

Bill Cleyndert & Company Ltd consists of a

passionately motivated team of highly skilled

craftsmen and professionals all sharing the

same vision and commitment to producing furniture

and joinery of the highest quality.

By marrying traditional skills and modern

technology, the company has established itself as one

of the UK’s most reputable bespoke manufacturers

to discerning customers.

It operates at the top end of the domestic market,

serving the interior design and architectural sector, with

the majority of its high net worth customers living in

London’s West End. It also works internationally and

is currently involved in an extensive project in Kuwait

Since being set up by Bill Cleyndert in 1999 the

business has experienced continual growth. It had an

annual turnover of £4 million last year and employs

50 staff at its well-equipped Fakenham, Norfolk factory.

“We are totally dependent on the top end of the

market remaining healthy,” said Mr Cleyndert. “Luckily,

despite the state of the economy we are very busy

right now. Our order books are looking good and we

are currently talking about projects for 2010.”

All processes, including the application of special

lacquered finishes and metal effects, are carried out

in-house, with £500,000 recently invested in a

finishing area comprising of a polishing shop and three

spray booths.

The latest equipment purchase is a Striebig

Control vertical panel saw, bought to cope with the

extra volume of work that two sliding table saws could

no longer handle. It’s used to size wood based panels

such as MDF, including veneered versions, plywood

and block board.

“We opted for a vertical panel saw because we needed to make

the best use of the factory space, and chose a Striebig as it is easy

to use, highly accurate and superbly engineered,” said Mr Cleyndert.

“We researched the vertical saw market and soon discovered that

Striebig was considered to be the market leader.”

Operating to an accuracy of 1/10 mm and with a maximum cut

size of 4300 x 2240mm and a cutting depth of 80mm, the Control

represents the state-of-the-art in vertical panel saw technology.

Its sophisticated design allows it to be operated via an

ergonomic control panel, leaving time for the next batch of work to

be prepared. Much of the cutting operation is automated; the saw

head is power fed, and the feed speed is controlled to ensure the

quality of the cut is maintained.

Features considered expensive optional extras in other saws are

included as standard. They include a digital measuring system,

accurate to 0.1 mm, and an adjustable precision display that can

be set to an accuracy of 1.0, 0.5 or 0.1 mm, according to the

thickness of the panels being sized.

Numerous automatic procedures are carried

out by the press of a button, including locking

and releasing the beam saw, setting the

horizontal cutting height, plunging and swivelling

the motor, locking the support rollers during

sawing and fine saw blade adjustment.

Various accessories are available to make the

saws even more productive A unique option is

four-side trimming, which enables the bottom

trim cut to be carried out automatically without

having to lift or turn the panel.

Cabinet maker Niall McCallum said the

Striebig has made his job much easier. “It’s very

simple to set up and then the machine does the

rest. Also, I can now load the biggest of panels

on to the saw’s bed by myself.”

The Control, together with an Al-Ko mobile

extraction unit, was supplied and installed by

Striebig’s exclusive UK agents, T.M. Machinery

Sales Ltd.

“To help get the very best out of our team of

craftsmen I believe in keeping up with the latest

technology and investing in top quality

equipment” said Mr Cleyndert. “That’s why

Striebig was my first choice.”

LIGNA, the leading international trade show for the

woodworking and wood processing industries, will cover

148,000m² area with 1,800 exhibitors; the organisers

estimate that 100,000 trade visitors world-wide will visit the show.

The exhibition is supported by a wealth of special exhibits,

seminars, conferences and symposia.

This year there is great uncertainty in the international markets.

The global economy is slowing down, energy and commodity prices

are rising, and demand for furniture and other wood products is falling.

The international wood industry is therefore looking to LIGNA to

revitalise the market.

One of the biggest drivers of innovation and capital investment

today is the need for resource efficiency – a topic that is very high

on the agenda at LIGNA.

Mounting competitive pressure is pushing up buyer expectations

of woodworking machinery. Buyers now expect their suppliers to

deliver greater productivity, more flexibility and new ways to save

money – e.g. through greater resource – efficiency and quality support

services. Only by keeping up with these trends can machinery

vendors and buyers stay competitive over the long term.

The message is clear – companies that invest now in more efficient

production technology will be better placed to compete when the

upturn finally comes. When the economy is in trouble, that is exactly

the right time to wake anti-cyclical investments which will ensure that

businesses emerge from the crisis stronger and better placed to

survive in turbulent conditions (banks permitting).

The fourth edition of SCM’s Open House, held in the Rimini

factory and showroom from the 26th to the 31st January

has ended with a record attendance of 1900 visitors. This

represents an important market reaction to the SCM Group’s

many investments during this unfavourable economic situation.

The exhibition was an important occasion to underline, once again,

that SCM can offer the latest complete technological solutions for

door and window manufacturers, joiners and large industries.

Thanks to SCM’s focus on complete machining processes, the

attendees from the UK, Europe and United States, viewed

demonstrations performed on more than 30 stand-alone machines

and Work Cells for the complete processing of doors, windows and

frames.

Among the most interesting solutions exhibited were:-

• Integra Work Cell, the new SCM solution for pre-squared frame

processing in a completely automatic way thanks to loading and

unloading robots.

• Accord 40, the new gantry CNC Machining Centre with 5-axis CNC

controlled head unit

• Aries multi-head machine, CNC Machining Centre for hardware

Combilift beat the seven other finalists to win the

innovation category, and MD Martin McVicar and

technical director Robert Moffett accepted the “Archie”

award from Kevin Lofting of the category sponsor Albury Asset

Rentals Ltd at the ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole

Hotel on 14th February.

Versatility has always been a hallmark of the company’s products,

and the 4-way Combi-CB is no exception. It is the smallest Combilift

to date, and was developed specifically for operations handling mixed

loads comprising mainly palletised goods but which also deal with

a small amount of long products. It is an excellent alternative to electric

4-way reach trucks, and as it has been designed with no platform,

100% use of lower storage areas can be achieved. Very compact

dimensions also enable operation in containers for seamless unloading

directly from delivery vehicles to the warehouse. The Combi-CB works

indoors and out, has a 2.5t capacity and is available with LPG, diesel

or AC electric power.

The UK FLTA summed up the benefits of this new forklift as follows:

“The Combi-CB compact multi-directional counterbalance transfers

the four-way principle into a small counterbalance truck for the first

time.” Martin McVicar comments: “Research and development has

always been a major part of Combilift’s business strategy, and we

are constantly striving to come up with products that make handling

and storage more productive, safer and cost effective for customers.

The fact that we won this category on a public vote shows that the

qualities of this innovative product are widely recognised, and we

would like to thank everyone who voted for us.” This is the fifth major

award that Combilift has won since the company was established.

In 1955 Johann Felder founded the

Felder company we know today. The

original workshop was setup in his

parent’s house at Krüseweg 10 in Absam

in Tirol. In 1956 Johann Felder presented

the first Felder woodworking machines

at exhibitions in Vienna and Innsbruck

In 1961 the company left its „birthplace“

and moved over on to Salzbergstraße 26.

In 1963 the first range of machinery, the

BU 4 was launched with amazing success.

With the following series the BU 5, BU 6,

BU 7 and BU 8 Johann Felder managed to

constantly develop the machines and at the same time increase

production and sales.

The steady growth of the company could no longer be supported

by the then workshop. In 1981 Felder moved once more, this time

from the original village of Absam to Hall in Tirol, where we find the

headquarters today. In 1984 Felder entered a new era, the machine

series BF3 and BF4 were a sales revelation from the word go.

Felder expanded and invested much in the head office in Hall in

Tirol. In 1990 Felder presented the first ever combination machine

with a sliding table and with this increased their market share even

further. At the same time the first professional solo machines for

industry were launched.

In 1994 came the break through in the industry market when the

sliding panel saw the K6 was launched onto the international stage.

Felder completed the transition from being a combination machine

specialist to being a complete provider of standard woodworking

machines for both hobbyists and industry.

In 1997 with the development and production of good value

woodworking machines under the brand name “Hammer“, Felder

was able to successfully compete against cheaper imports from the

Far East. The dual success of the brands Felder and Hammer, led

to a further expansion in the production and manufacturing areas

at the factory in Hall.

With the international success in the production and sales of the

professional solo machines, the demand increased further for even

larger woodworking machines. In 2001 Felder introduced a brand

new range of heavy duty machinery for carpentry, business and

industry under the brand „Format-4“.

With the slogan „the complete workshop“, the Format-4 product

range was expanded further with the introduction of CNC-

Machining Centres. In 2005 Format-4 edgebanders were added to

the range. In 2007 came the addition of beam saws and heated

veneer presses and in 2008 the kappa 550 was launched with 3

model options.

Today you will find the 3 brands, Felder,

Hammer and Format-4 from the Felder

family presented on the world market under

the name, the Felder Group. Ever since the

company first began Felder has managed

to stay at the forefront of the market with

numerous patents and innovative solutions.

The successes of Felder can not only be

seen in the market place, but have also

been recognised with a number of awards,

including the Bavarian Staatspreis in 1983

and 1991, the IF- Design Award and the

Adolf Loos Staatspreis for Design to name but a few.

The Format-4 product range encompasses the complete

panel machining range of machines. The brand name has

been carefully selected: “Format”, a synonym for

processing “format” style panels and the digit “4” represents

the 4 sides of the panel board itself.

A success story made in Austria, with thousands of satisfied

customers worldwide, all with in less than 7 years in the market. The

machine designers in Hall in Tirol believe that “new innovation,

developments and machines should always be present in the Format-

4 product range” and are as such continually designing new

machines.

With the new CNC – Machining Centre models, the profit H20,

profit H22, profit H24 and profit H20MT, the Tyrolean machine

designers have not only modernised the existing “profit” range, but

searches for solutions before it looks at

machines. Format-4 consultants will help you

to find the correct solution and will

help you develop an individual

production concept. Experience

that Format-4 has gained over

the past few years has shown

that only a CNC machining

centre can considerably

improve levels of production

and subsequently increase profit, regardless of the size of the

business or the type of product being manufactured.

The Format-4 range of four models is designed to offer the perfect

individual solution for every requirement. The Format-4 concept -

heavy design, perfect machining results, elegant build quality and

ease of use of the software ensuring maximum precision and

performance.

Model 1 – the universal allrounder ‘profit H20’, is perfect for

the ambitious interior woodworker and the versatile workshop,

designed to increase kitchen unit, solid wood and door manufacturing

productivity. The profit H20 is an allrounder, capable of an incredible

number of functions with almost limitless applications.

Model 2 – the profit maker ‘profit H22’, for standard and non-

standard production when using solid wood. With increased efficiency

and flexibility, the profit H22 is designed to increase the production

output of doors, windows, stairs and solid wood furniture. Increased

productivity at a relatively low investment, the profit H22 will

demonstrate its profitability from day one.

Model 3 – the profit H24’, an XL model particularly in the Y axis

designed to process larger panels. With a large-dimensioned working

surface, the profit H24 offers unlimited manufacturing options when

it comes to machine panels and solid wood. Designed to increase

competitiveness and profit margins, the impact of the H24 will not

be anything less than sensational.

Model 4 - Perfection in “Nesting” the ‘profit H20 MT’.

Processing of diverse shapes for example in the production of

upholstery furniture components is known as “Nesting”. The matrix

table ensures that the workpiece is completely supported increasing

precision. The Format-4 Nesting programme “FlashNest” also assists

in increasing profit by optimising the panel, making as many products

from one panel as possible and therefore reducing waste.

New from CNC – Machining CentresWith the 4 new models from the „profit“ CNC machine range, Format-4 completes the expansive product

range it offers cabinet makers and the woodworking industry.

When Mark Van Rooijen of Brookmans was looking for

a replacement sander, he didn’t want to compromise

on the results it produced or the ease of use. Mark

researched the market carefully and among his shortlist of

machines was the BiesseArtech Levia 320. Trials were carried

out on the Levia and Mark could immediately see that the results

were superb. One of the problems he previously had with his

old machine was the need to hand finish his components. “We

need to ensure that our products are of the best quality”, said

Mark. As we manufacture for the top end of the market our

customers expect only the best.

Mick Ibbertson, machine shop manager, agreed and added, that

machine is high quality, very flexible and versatile. Because it is really

easy to operate the guys love using it.

Changing the sanding belts was a slow job before, but now we

can change them in seconds, start the machine and we are back

in production in no time at all. Another influence in purchasing the

Levia is the compact footprint, floor space in our factory is at a

premium”, said Mick.

One product we need to process is a small component

approximately 50 mm X 90 mm which we route out in series, leaving

a skin of approx 0.5 mm. We then feed the sheet through the sander

to remove the 0.5 mm skin, thus leaving the components free. Being

equipped with pressure shoes instead of rollers reduces the gap

between the pressure point and the sanding roller, eliminating the

risk of smaller components jumping and being damaged.

With 2 powerful motors, each of 25 hp, the machine is capable

of sanding both solid timber and veneered components with ease.

This is due to the configuration of a steel roller for calibrating work

on the first belt and a combination unit of roller and sectional pad

with anti dubbing device for that all important veneer work on the

second unit.

Mark explains selling to the bespoke top end market we need to

ensure that our customers receive a top quality product with no

hiccups. We assemble the furniture in a mock up of the customer’s

room and although this is an expensive operation, it ensures there

are no issues; and actually saves time on site helping to guarantee

a happy customer.”

In the time the machine has been installed, it has vastly improved

our output, both in terms of time and finish. The Levia was specified

to cover our numerous current and future requirements and its

performance has been superb. Value for money it’s been a winner

all-round.

At the recent Solid Wood Open

House Exhibition held in

SCM’s Rimini CNC Machining

Centre Manufacturing Plant, SCM

introduced a new model of the very

popular Accord range with the

introduction of the model Accord 40.

The ACCORD 40 is the new SCM

CNC Gantry Machining Centre with a

generously dimensioned multifunction

worktable and with a 5-axis CNC

controlled head unit, suitable for general

purpose machining on a multitude of

panels and component parts with a component passage of a

generous 330mm, very high for this type of gantry CNC machine,

but capable due to the rigid structure and build quality.

Table dimensions are up to 7250mm (X direction) by 2280mm (Y

direction) to allow tandem machining if required and with the options

of automatic panel feeding and off-loading of the machined

components.

The concept of the Accord 40 Numerically controlled machining

centre, with mobile gantry and fixed worktable is for the processing

of various types of panels including chipboard, MFC, MDF, plywood,

splines, plastics and light alloys.

Designed using the best three-dimensional solid modelling

systems, the structure is composed of a machine bed and a mobile

gantry made of electro-welded steel. All mechanical machining of

component parts are performed on high quality CNC machining

centres with one single positioning operation to guarantee the very

best planar, perpendicular and precise tolerances.

The control unit is an industrial numeric control with integrated

Office PC (Personal Computer Desktop). The CNC solution with Office

PC combines all of the qualities of numeric controls with the user-

friendliness typical of personal computers. The Office PC allows the

use of the SCM’s Xilog Plus interface, the software developed directly

by SCM to make programming fast and simple even for the less

experienced operators and to enable the access to the SCM

Teleservice system.

The X, Y and Z axes are all interpolating with axis travel using

brushless motors, with rapid traverse of X and Y axes at 75 metres

/ minute and Z axis at 30 metres / minute, with full automatic

lubrication included.

There is a full range of machining heads available including 3, 4

and 5 axis units, with a variety of automatic tool changers with 10,

12, 16 and 24 tool spaces, drilling units with 11, 18 or 32 vertical

and horizontal spindles, and supplementary machining units

including the Universal horizontal 2-outlet unit for door lock and hinge

recessing, plus sawing units, and special units to meet individual

requirements.

The 3-axis Modulo routing machining heads can be 8.5, 12 or

13 KW up to 18,000rpm with HSK F63 tool chucks fitted to give

maximum drive to the tool or aggregate heads if used, thus enabling

the most heavy duty machining

requirements to be carried out.

The 5-axis Prisma K routing machining

head has variable spindle speed of 600

to 20,000rpm with 11 KW of power

achieved at 15,000rpm again with HSK

F63 tool chucks. A dust hood with

several different positions controlled by

the operating program is included with

the 5-axis head unit. Again, a number of

additional units can be utilised alongside

the Prisma K head.

A wide range of vacuum pumps and

systems are available to locate and hold down the largest of panel

sizes on the machine table. SCM has many years experience in high

volume vacuum systems, with up to 1,000 cubic metres per hour

available, so any problem can be easily overcome.

Stand alone machines can be fed manually or by a simple vacuum

lift, but SCM are now installing Accord machines with a variety of

handling solutions to minimise labour, especially when jumbo size

sheets are to be used. Automatic Conveyors can be located at the

infeed to allow panels to be fed to the machine table, one at a time,

whether in-line or at 90 degrees depending upon the floor space

available.

At the outfeed of the Accord, again various solutions can be offered

to remove the machined components, with tables to sort out the

components for stacking while the next panel is already being

machined on the table of the Accord.

Specialist Joinery company Limebright has chosen a Weeke Vantage

33M CNC machining centre with a matrix table to move the company

to the realm of CNC-based production. The machine includes a very

high-tech specification arrived at in close consultation between Limebright,

Andy Potter of Homag UK and manufacturers Weeke.

Situated in Caldicot, Gwent, Limebright produce bespoke products of the very

highest quality for a variety of sectors including regularly delivering on complex

projects. This includes working in shopfitting, office and commercial fit-outs, sport

and leisure, financial and corporate and also health care and schools. Projects range

from reception areas. Staircases, specialist doors, kitchen areas and office partitions.

Operations Manager Robert Taylor says that they have to produce complex and

shaped components from a range of materials. “We decided to move into CNC

production to greatly enhance our flexibility and accuracy while also giving us

additional capacity in terms of significant time savings over manual processes.”

Limebright undertook careful research into the CNC machinery market. “We

decided on the Weeke machine for a number of reasons: we felt that it was the

most solidly built machine but also offered the best functional advantages through

its simplicity of design and operation” explains Robert Taylor.

The Weeke at Limebright has a full processing area of 3100mm x 1250mm

and the matrix table was specified for clamping complex and asymmetrically shaped

parts. For machining panels, solid wood components and solid surface materials

the Weeke is equipped with a powerful router spindle controlled between 1250rpm

and 24000rpm in both left and right rotation. An automatic tool changer is fitted.

The head also carries a drill block for drilling construction holes, shelf peg holes

and other aperture requirements on standard 32mm centres or individually

selectable.

Part of Limebright’s decision regarding the engineering of the Weeke was the

powerful HSK F63 tool interface that provides a highly positive lock into the router

spindle and reduces vibration so improving the quality of cut line and tool life.

Operating and software were also important considerations – the Weeke uses

Homag’s unique WoodWop programming system with ‘DXF’ file import, Nesting

Program and 3D Cabinet Design programming have all been mastered by Limebright

operators who attended standard training courses offered by Homag UK.

Limebright are also using the Weeke to machine veneered products, plastics

and solid surface like HI-MACS® which, says Robert Taylor, they prefer to use for

its machining characteristics and performance in use. They also get a superb service

from James Latham – national distributors for HI-MACS®.

The Weeke Vantage 33M is working perfectly since installation last summer.

Limebright says that the other crucial aspect of the decision to invest in the Weeke

is the unparalleled back-up service and support they receive from Homag UK.

Specialising in high quality joinery andspecifically staircases, Descant Joinery hasgrown since 1985 from a staff of 12 to the

present 29. The company was bought over bypresent owner Charlie Machray 10 years ago andthey have become the only larger joinerymanufacturer to offer a supply and installationservice in Scotland with 3 permanent fitting teams.

All the company’s work is bespoke and they

supply to some of the best known national house

builders like Wimpy and Barrett, a number of

independent builders, architects and specifiers. They

also supply and fit for discerning private customers.

Charlie Machray has steadily expanded the

business through strategic investment in the best

high-tech equipment available. Through a long association with Scotland’s premier

machinery supplier Deral, Descant have come to rely on the high level of technical

advice and guidance they can offer and this recently resulted in the purchase of

a Homag BOF211 CNC 5-axis router.

While Descant researched all CNC options on the market they decided on the Homag

BOF211 for a number of reasons: superior engineering, flexibility in terms of the

specification they required, guaranteed excellent service and back-up from both Deral

and Homag UK, software interfacing (the Homag Woodwop package supports the

Compass stair package that Descant prefer to use) and excellent training from Homag.

As the final part of a £300K company investment plan, they invested in 5-axis

machine technology. They were particularly looking for flexibility, capacity and support

for such an investment. Descant may be renowned for their quality staircases but

the other products they produce are of an equally high quality – screens, doors,

commercial reception desks and even toilet cubicles.

They are accredited Corian fabricators and the

company operates an integral polishing shop.

Considering both current and future requirements

Descant worked closely with both Deral’s John

Mackay and Homag on the specification of the router.

Before the machine was finally delivered and

installed at the end of 2008 it was put on display

on Homag UK’s stand at the W8 exhibition.

The Homag BOF211 now operating very

successfully at Descant is a 5-axis CNC router with

a 5.2m bed with a pod and beam clamping system

including special clamps for arched windows, newel

posts etc. Clamping is made accurate and

straightforward via a ceiling-mounted laser. The router

features a 30-position tool changer, drilling heads and independent sawing unit.

Waste is removed by an integral conveyor belt

By investing carefully and intelligently in the BOF211, Descant Joinery has set

themselves up for the future with the flexibility and capacity to explore new market areas.

For many large-format applications, AXYZ International can

provide a wide choice of standard CNC routers. These are

recognised as being among the most technically

advanced and competitively priced machines available.

However, there are many industries where there is the need to

machine larger and/or multiple sheets of material. This is a task

that has invariably proved beyond the capabilities of smaller

routers supplied by other manufacturers and has resulted in the

use of manual routing with all of its attendant variables in terms

of increased production time, material wastage and exposure

to human error. To resolve this situation, AXYZ Automation has

taken the lead in the development and installation of an

increasing number of bespoke routing solutions. These have now

assumed benchmark status within those industries where a

large- or super large-format production requirement exists.

These robust and totally reliable customised routing solutions

incorporate all of the unique design features and components inherent

in the standard machines, whilst providing a greater capacity for

individual machine configuration to meet specific processing

requirements. Key design features include AXYZ Automation’s

powerful and versatile Automatic Tool Changer (ATC) to provide a

host of production options.

At a 25,000 square feet modern facility on

the Phoenix Retail Park in Paisley, near

Glasgow, Doors by Design are now

Scotland’s leading manufacturer of internal

specialist doors and door sets. The company, set

up 10 years ago, moved to the new premises in

June 2008 to achieve space the needed to install

state-of-the-art production equipment, setting

them up for the future.

When they set up, Doors by Design employed just

4 staff. The company now employs 45 people with a

turnover of £4 million projected for 2009. Commercial

Director Barbara Fraser explains that they perceived a

requirement for Scotland to have its own specialist door

and door product manufacturer – previously most of

these products were supplied from south of the border.

They’ve been proved correct and now supply internal

doors and door sets to the education system, offices, public buildings,

the leisure sector and the health sector.

Specialist products manufactured include acoustic doors and fire

rated doors of up to 2 hours. Complete door sets are becoming

increasingly popular and Doors by Design are fully equipped to fulfil

this growing demand.

Many of their products are made to order for architects, specifies and

designers for specific projects. Their success has come about through

a policy of installing the best possible manufacturing equipment and

systems. In this respect they have relied primarily on the professional

expertise of Deral, Scottish agents for Homag UK. Barbara Fraser says

that it is essential for Doors by Design to have a competent technical

partner: “We’ve known Deral and John Mackay in particular for many years

and have come to rely on their expertise and the excellent service they

can provide locally”.

Now Doors By Design has made a major investment in finishing

equipment through Deral and Homag UK to supply a further value added

service to their customers. This consists of fully automatic Cefla finishing

line comprising Sorbini roller coaters and UV curing tunnels. This line also

includes an integrated Bütfering SCO113 wide belt sander for denibbing

in-line. The sander has a fixed bed height for in-line integration and a

moveable top head system. The new finishing line allows Doors by Design

to lacquer and finish to customer requirements. The results are of the

highest and most consistent quality.

Because of the nature of their products and flexibility of their service,

Doors by Design have also invested in the first ever Bütfering SCQ216

large widebelt sander to be installed in the UK. This sander has a working

width of 1600mm and has been specified with a crossbelt head as,

explains Barbara Fraser, the fashion for horizontal veneer grain direction

has become increasingly popular.

The other Homag Group machine installed by Deral is a Homag

KAL330 single-sided edgebander equipped with a Norsden PUR gluing

system particularly for applying solid lippings to fire rated doors with a

bond that will be fully compliant. The KAL330 is a computer controlled

edgebander with special units including pre-milling, top and bottom

trimming and corner rounding.

All Doors by Design operators received full training

from Homag UK, something that Barbara Fraser

describes as being “key for buying any new machine”.

With the new equipment installed by Homag and

Deral, Doors by Design are now poised to add great value

to their service for the whole Scottish market and, indeed,

anywhere in the UK.

Envirosafe Door Systems is a relative new

company that has recently emerged in

Barking, Essex, to supply doors, door

sets and quality bespoke joinery, and is a

Division of the AA Timber Group of Forest Gate,

London. Envirosafe Door Systems is owned and

run by Managing Director, Bill Croft, 62 years

old, and it already has achieved an impressive

list of clients since being established just over

12 months ago, with new enquiries and business

coming in every day due to its growing

reputation in the London area.

The manufacturing side of the business is based

around the installation of an SCM 5-axis CNC

Machining Centre, model Record 132TVN Prisma.

Bill Croft comments “As the CNC was a critical

purchase to the new division, I had to ensure we purchased a machine

from a reputable CNC manufacturer who could do everything for us,

from training to installation and commissioning to assisting us in the

early days when the learning curve is at its steepest.”

“After researching the market, we contacted SCM and their Area

Sales Manager, Mike Lee, who visited us to discuss our detailed

requirements and arrange for us to visit and see a similar 5-axis

machine in operation producing work that we intended carrying out

on the new machine. We travelled to County Joinery South East Ltd.

near Battle in Sussex, and they very kindly gave us a full machine

demonstration on doors and stair components, followed by all the

relevant software required to program the machine.”

Envirosafe Door Systems core business is the supply of doors,

a large majority of which are manufactured and supplied by Vicaima

Doors of Swindon, and they are then fully machined to meet individual

customer’s requirements. Staircases, windows and all types of

bespoke joinery are also manufactured and supplied.

Programming of the SCM machine is carried out by Bill Croft’s

son Jason, using AlphaCam’s 5-axis CAD CAM

package, after undertaking an intensive training

course at AlphaCam, proceeded by SCM’s 3-day

training course on the CNC machine’s software and

systems at SCM UK’s Headquarters in Nottingham.

Bill Croft also runs a very successful timber and

joinery company in Forest Gate, but due to the

location, expansion of the current premises was not

feasible, so a separate building was sought, and as

Barking is ideally situated in the Government’s

Thames Corridor Project area and with excellent

transport links, a suitable manufacturing unit was

purchased.

Bill Croft continued “We are an independent

timber supplier. The large timber suppliers do not

tend to be flexible to their customer’s needs, whereas

we can supply just about everything, from raw or fully machined

timber, doors, joinery, panels, etc. Our doors are designated ‘Secure

By Design’ and we are a member of the FSC Certification and

Auditing processes as well as members of the British Woodworking

Federation.”

Jason and Bill Croft have been very impressed with the SCM 5-

axis Machining Centre and the help and assistance they have been

given by the SCM Service Department, especially their local SCM

engineer, Andy McKenzie. “We were on a very steep learning curve”

commented Jason Croft, “but we knew the SCM Help Desk and

their CNC engineers were always on hand when we needed them.

The machine is proving a valuable asset to our business and is

working flat out every day in order to keep our growing list of

customers happy.”

The Record 132TVN Prisma has a 6300mm long bed in order

that tandem loading can take place, loading doors or component

parts at one end of the bed while machining is taking place at the

other end of the bed. The 5-axis, heavy duty routing head is capable

of machining the most complex shapes and components and has

a 24-station automatic tool changer to feed the various tools and

aggregates to the routing spindle.

Concluding, Bill Croft states “We are already benefiting from the

forthcoming Olympic Games coming to London in 2012 and the

Stratford City 20 year project, and no doubt more work will be coming

our way as we fully meet our customer’s needs. We do work for the

nearby Excel Exhibition Centre and, although house building in

London has slowed down of late, we feel there will be new sites

opening in 2009, and along with our timber company and the SCM

CNC at Envirosafe Door Systems, we are very well set to take

advantage of the market when it begins to grow again, and by then

a second CNC will definitely be on the cards!”

The Hoffmann system is increasingly used with great success

worldwide. While extremely simple it is also very efficient. It works by

inserting a serrated dovetail key into a pre-routed

keyway slot on the under-face of the two

components to be joined. The Hoffmann key then

pulls the two faces of the joint together in a secure,

accurate and permanent joint. No pinning, nailing

or stapling is required nor any lengthy clamping and

setting times.

The machine used for keyway routing at Doors

by Design is the entry-level MU2 bench-mounted

model. However the Hoffmann system is used for

creating a wide variety of joints – some very complex

– across a whole range of industries. Consequently Hoffmann

manufactures a wide range of associated application equipment.

Hoffmann have also supplied an Morsø guillotine to Doors by Design for

accurate cutting of joint angles.

Based near Yeovil in Somerset, Halstock

Cabinet Makers produce interior

furniture of such excellence that they

have established a significant reputation

among interior designers and architects whose

discerning customers are based throughout the

south of England, London and abroad.

Halstock recently invested in their first CNC

machining centre – a Weeke Venture 2.5M

supplied and serviced by Homag UK.

Halstock managing director Richard Miller

explains that the investment was part of an ongoing

strategy to bring all production in-house to further control quality and add

flexibility to the manufacturing process. “All of our work is totally bespoke

ranging from kitchens and bedrooms to entire interior refurbishments which

includes contemporary and reproduction furniture. We have to have a

manufacturing facility that is high-tech but sits comfortably with the skills

of the highly qualified craftsmen in our workshops.” Halstock presently

employs 32 staff and have a turnover of around £2.5 million. The company

also work with material other than wood to provide a full concept-to-

completion service along with total project management.

The Halstock factory is a model of modern efficiency and, for a

woodworking workshop, remarkably clean and tidy. Production Manager

Jasper Heinrich explains that good housekeeping is part of the entire

ethic at Halstock which results in products of impeccable quality. This

attitude extended to the meticulous way in which the company researched

their first CNC investment. “We got our shortlist of suppliers down to five

or six different manufacturers and decided on the Weeke for a number

of reasons: The technical advice and support we got from Homag’s Andy

Potter was excellent” explains Jasper Heinrich. “The actual build and

engineering of the Weeke surpassed that of the

other machines we looked at. The Homag

Woodwop software was the easiest to integrate

and interface with our CAD system used by our

designers. We also closely investigated the level

of technical support and back-up we could expect

from Homag UK and this was thoroughly

professional” he adds.

Previously Halstock had sub-contracted much

of their CNC work with other operations carried out

manually within the company. With the new Weeke

Halstock recruited CNC operator Nick Whiting who

was familiar with their work and brings with him 6 years of CNC operating

experience. He is now extremely impressed with and enjoying the wide

range of manufacturing capabilities that the Weeke can offer.

“Buying the Weeke has been a major step forward in our progress

towards a process-led production situation” explains Jasper Heinrich.

He says that the Weeke’s flexibility has allowed them to transfer many

production processes from traditional to CNC with major advantages.

“For instance” he explains, “our hinge drilling for frames and doors that

would typically take between 12 and 15 hours now takes us only 2 hours

on the Weeke with the advantage of guaranteed accuracy and precision.”

Halstock are fully satisfied with their investment which, apart from

offering the obvious production advantages, give the company the

confidence take on more ambitious projects and extra work.

Classic Joinery Ltd, a leader in the design and

manufacture of high performance hardwood and

softwood windows and doors has chosen Wood

Waste Technology Ltd. to supply and install a wood waste

heater for their production facility. The WT15 wood waste

heater, which suited the Stoke-on-Trent based businesses

application, produces around 145kw/hr (500,000btu/hr) of

heat into the workshop, and will dispose of a large skip of

off cuts per week, saving approximately £6000 per annum

in skip charges and a further £3000- £4000 on gas bills

making the payback period around 12 months. Customers

can then look forward to savings somewhere in the region

of £50,000 over the next five years, a very important factor

especially in the current economical situation.

Managing Director Darren Young looked at a few different

options and suppliers but chose Wood Waste Technology due

to their excellent reputation and well known outstanding after

sales service. Mr Young explained “Many people do not realise

exactly how much money is spent on skip and heating costs and

the figure is quite frightening when worked out over a 12 month

period. I have been looking for a reliable wood waste heater and

supplier for some time and after viewing many different models

actually working on site, chose Wood Waste Technology, mainly

due to glowing reports from their customers, and also the well

built and heavy duty design of the unit. I was also pleasantly

surprised to find that as manufacturers of their own equipment

they were the most competitively priced units in the marketplace,

I had actually placed an order with another company and realised

at the last minute that I required an afterburner, luckily a friend

of mine advised me about Wood Waste Technology and their units

which do not require one. I placed my order, the heater was

installed in 2 weeks and I saved myself £3500.00 in the deal!”

Managing Director of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft

comments,” we believe in providing very affordable solutions to

ever increasing waste and heating charges and keeping payback

periods to a minimum. We also pride ourselves on our

outstanding after sales and service departments, which has made

us the U.K No.1 manufacturer in our field, this has been

highlighted by our continuous growth, the purchase of a new

production facility and heavy investment in new machinery. The

majority of our business comes from recommendations and we

are always more than happy to supply names and addresses of

any of our clients for new customers to contact, being a great

believer in customers listening to first hand experience of people

who have dealt with us rather than sales talk.”

The WT range are fully certified to be installed in clean air zones

without the use of an afterburner, this will save approximately a

further £2500 on the initial cost and £2000 per annum in running

costs compared to competitors units, making the payback period

the quickest in the market place today.

Wood Waste Technology manufactures a wide range of heaters

from small hand fired units to fully automatic systems to suit

virtually all sizes of companies.

We also service other makes of wood waste heaters,

supplying genuine spares at up to 60% cheaper than our

competitors.

The new Rembe Q-Box II flameless explosion venting

system for indoor and outdoor applications available in

the UK from Orthos combines enhanced safety with cost-

savings and greater plant layout flexibility with easy installation

directly on to a flat surface.

Absorbing dust explosion flame and heat, the system is ideal for

industrial plants with low pressure resistance and the need for large

venting areas.

An advanced development from the company’s

original Q-Rohr indoor venting system, and the

original Q-Box design, the Q-Box II provides

an improved max. KSt value up to 200 bar

x m/s and allows plant designers to position

machines and equipment according to

process requirements and thereby

optimise production. It incurs no

maintenance or operational costs and

is more economical than active

suppression systems.

Two standard sizes, 305 x 610 and 586 x

920mm are available with maximum effective areas of

1100cm² and 3500cm² respectively and other sizes are offered

on request. Typical applications include protecting bucket elevators

and conveying systems, dust filters, silos and bunkers.

Basic venting principle is to cool flame gases within a special

The future does not look as gloomy

for Dustraction customer Eston

Replacement Windows as it does

for many currently.

Founded in Middlesbrough in 1979, ERW

began as a small joinery business

manufacturing hardwood and softwood

windows and doors for the trade and for

domestic installation projects; growth was

steady with a move in 1988 to larger

premises. In 1999 they closed their small

joinery shop to concentrate on the installation

of outsourced timber window frames and

doors plus uPVC and aluminium - alternative

materials then growing in popularity.

However, says MD Lawrence Wall, things

have now gone full circle; ERW are planning

to get back to, and to specialise exclusively

in, timber products of the company’s own

manufacture. The time is right, Mr Wall

believes, to invest in the latest technology for

the production of factory finished timber

windows and doors to high standards of

quality and a prominent part of the investment

programme also focuses on a return-air wood

waste extraction and incineration layout by

Dustraction to bring ERW ecologically bang

up to date.

Back in ‘99 ERW occupied only part of the

building on Skippers Lane Industrial Estate but

has now acquired the balance to

accommodate new digital production plant as

well as woodwaste extraction from

Dustraction. Lawrence Wall says: “ERW is dedicated to preserving

the architectural and ecological integrity of this region through the

use of natural, sustainable timbers - the European Redwood we will

be using is harvested from managed forests where the growing period

is measured in decades.”

On average, according to Lawrence Wall, two trees are planted

for every one harvested - as timber usage from these sustainable

sources increases, so too does replanting. Many people are unaware,

he says, that the area of land under forestation in Europe is increasing

year-on-year and that there is a larger area of forest now than there

was a hundred years ago, underscoring the sustainability of timber

as the production material of choice.

A Dustrax No 27 RV Series filter is the basis of the new woodwaste

extraction layout that Dustraction has installed to serve a range of

machines inside the new building. The air volume to be handled is

to the customer’s own specification at 10,000 cfm and serves a range

of joinery machines the largest of which is a window manufacturing

line which demands the lion’s share of the extraction capability. There

is also a CNC router, moulder, bandsaw, cross-cut saw bench and

a vertical spindle moulder.

Dustrax filters use a tubular sock type

of filtering system complete with two

automatic shaker mechanisms for the

periodic removal of caked dust from the

filter sleeves on plant shut down. Waste is

transferred to the end of the hopper section

via the main floor-mounted extraction

fanset and is discharged through a heavy

duty, ruggedly constructed rotary valve

airseal specially designed to handle

woodwaste. The filter plant is mounted on

a steelwork support structure to raise the

rotary valve outlet to a workable height for

discharge direct to a waste collection skip.

Waste discharged to the skip includes

large off cuts and all is transferred to a

WT15 burner by Woodwaste Technology.

The WT range of burners operate cleanly

and efficiently without need for costly

afterburners to eliminate unburned gases

- a requirement in many modern ‘clean air

zone’ working environments.

Significant research and development

has been invested by Woodwaste

Technology in the elimination of afterburner

costs that also include the fuel

or energy systems required to power

them. WT15 incinerators rely on very few

moving parts and have a trouble-free record

with units normally only requiring a single

service per year. They are statistically, says

Woodwaste Technology, the most durable

and most dependable heaters in today’s

wood and panel processing environment and also the most

economical, generating big savings on skip charges as well as on

heating bills.

Filtered and heated air is returned back into the Eston

Replacement

Windows factory at high level via summer/winter dampers to allow

discharge direct to the outside atmosphere in warmer weather. An

hour-rated fire damper is incorporated within Dustraction’s return air

ductwork with a micro switch activator to shut down the whole

system in the event of emergency.

ERW’s new Skippers Lane site is a modern, purpose built factory

and office premises with a superb showroom facility. The dedicated

management team is complemented by highly skilled craftsman and

a fully trained surveying and customer service team.

It is truer today than it has ever been: Those who aim to

succeed must be able to produce more quickly, even more

flexibly and most importantly of all more economically. The

market demands top quality and just-in-time production

coupled with wide product versatility both in series production

and for one-off jobs. It is specifically to address these demands

that the HOMAG Group has extended its

product range in every performance

category. With an integral concept

designed to allow more flexible, more

profitable production for every size and

variety of production run – right

down to batch size 1. The

solutions on offer boast a highly

attractive cost-to-performance

ratio and are custom tailored for

every size of operation.

A systematic approach to mastering every requirementThe same basic rule of thumb applies to every operation from the

small-scale joinery or medium-sized woodworking shop through to

industrial scale producers: Customer requirements are becoming more

varied all the time. Customers expect wide-ranging different product

models and finishes no matter what the size of the production run.

And they also expect continuous just-in-time availability at low cost.

All of these demands have made just-in-time production a key

economic factor for most woodworking firms. It is here that the

HOMAG Group concept comes into its own. Alongside new machines

and production techniques, the HOMAG Group specialists also offer

comprehensive system solutions taking into account every

conceivable special requirement. Because integrating economical

batch size 1 production means bringing internal organizational

procedures – such as information and material flow – into step with

machines, control and handling systems as well

as software solutions.

One-stop productivity increaseThe HOMAG Group engineering teams work to develop the

optimum solution in each case. Individually tailored and competently

engineered from a single

reliable source. As

a result of

painstaking analysis,

perfect optimization and

networking of all the different

production steps. One of the key factors here

is an ingenious method of workpiece marking.

Right from the cutting stage, a bar code is attached to

the different workpieces. The order data contained in the barcode

is read out individually, allowing every workpiece to be processed

as a one-off. The result. Wide-ranging different workpiece

variants can be processed at an output of up to 30 per

hour with an almost unlimited number of different edging materials.

Intelligent data processing systems and logistical concepts are also

deployed to increase productivity. Added advantages include

extreme flexibility, low space requirement, short throughfeed times

and a high degree of capacity utilization coupled with minimal handling.

Minimized stock keeping during production also helps reduce capital

tie-up.

Background information on the companyHOMAG Holzbearbeitungssysteme AG with its partner companies

Space 3D cabinet software is a time-saving solution for

designing and manufacturing cabinets, offering a

comprehensive range of features and the benefit that CAM

data is compiled automatically for use with any CNC machine.

With its 3D views, parametric programming and ease of use, the

software provides the tools needed to reduce time to market by

speeding up the design process, improving accuracy, and cutting

production time since it eliminates the need for setting/marking out

and template making.

Five different levels of the software are available, each offering an

increased range of functions, so customers can choose the one

matching their individual needs. The first level includes features usually

found only in more expensive panel software packages, and allows

straight cabinets to be created quickly using simple commands to

produce a cutting list.

Level 2 adds built-in libraries of components and doors,

additional options for more complex design features, and allows

complete rooms to be created with the various cabinets in place.

The ability to view the room in 3D is a useful feature for client meetings

and in Level 3, which provides tools for handling curved walls and

designing curved cabinets, the view is enhanced to a high quality

'virtual reality' rendering.

The top two levels provide still more advanced functions, including

systems for materials estimating, producing bills of materials and supplier

orders, and managing warehouse and production data and costs.

Customers are supported with full training and after-sales services from

a nationwide team as well as through email and telephone helpdesks.

The seamless transition from solid model to CNC program

is close to the top of every woodworker’s wish-list. Now,

Alphacam and 3D Analyzer have teamed up to make this

goal a reality. With the ability to import solids from Parasolid

and ACIS-based CAD modellers, as well as native solid files from

CAD vendors such as Autodesk, Alphacam Part Modeler or

Pro/ENGINEER, Alphacam is the ideal software partner for 3D

Analyzer.

Using commands specifically developed within Alphacam,

imported solid assemblies can be identified, tagged and exported

directly into 3D Analyzer. Configurable scripts within 3D Analyzer

automatically apply the jointing technology between assembly parts,

such as Rafix, and Cam and Dowel. Cutter technology, also applied

within 3D Analyzer, prepares each part of the assembly for export

back into Alphacam. On import, the powerful Alphacam package

automatically machines, nests and outputs the code for each part

ready to run on any CNC router.

Darren Duane, managing director OgeeTek, European distributor

of 3D Analyzer software, states: “Linking Alphacam and 3D Analyzer

enables the automatic manufacture of assemblies created within any

solid modeller. Additionally, the combined industry knowledge and

experience of Alphacam and OgeeTek means manufacturing has

been fast tracked to create seamless integrated environments and

increased profitability for our customers. We see this as the ultimate

Versatile, high quality finishes at almost

half the weight EGGER makes

contemporary ‘chunky’ trends easier

to install.

EGGER UK, Europe’s leading manufacturer

of wood-based panel products has fused its

stylish new worktop range with its innovative

Eurolight technology to create high-quality,

fashionable work surfaces that are easy to

handle and install.

60mm Eurolight worktops are 41% lighter

than traditional 38mm chipboard core worktops

yet retain excellent stability thanks to its unique

honeycomb structure.

Andrew Sanderson, EGGER UK’s product manager said the

combination made new design trends favouring the ‘chunky’ look

more attainable. He said: “Contemporary design demands thicker,

chunky styles, but this has obvious drawbacks – heavier worktops

means greater logistic costs and trickier, more awkward installation.

“However, Eurolight worktops are significantly lighter than

existing solutions and solve the disadvantages associated with thicker

work surfaces instantly, providing a solid premium look without the

premium price tag.”

Not only do Eurolight worktops create opportunities for new,

thicker, chunkier styles but also because of the rising prices of energy

and raw materials, the lightweight boards will meet the needs of

furniture manufacturers, logistics partners and

The lighter worktops mean that transport

costs are reduced and fitters will find that they

are far easier to handle and cut. EGGER has

developed a range of technical support to ensure

that installations including hob and sink cut outs

are also simple and straightforward.

EGGER recently released its new range of 18

worktop finishes the range offers the latest

decors and textures, featuring contemporary

trends like oxidised metal alongside traditional

finishes such as granite and terrazzo.

All 18 finishes are available either as 38mm

Eurospan Worktops (chipboard core) or 60mm Eurolight Worktops

(cardboard honeycomb core).

The new range has also undergone rigorous industry testing and

has been awarded the prestigious FIRA Gold Award for both 38mm

Eurospan and 60mm Eurolight Worktops. Eurolight worktops are

the lightest FIRA certified 60mm worktops available.
