W hy look at a big, black barbecue when you can have a view that’s worth gazing at?

That’s a question Kit Davey, Redwood City-based interior designer (and Palo Alto Weekly columnist) poses to potential clients who want to apply her “rearrange what you have” attitude to their back-yards.

Davey, whose business goes by the moniker “A Fresh Look,” will be teaching a class at Common Ground in Palo Alto tomorrow, called “Backyard Decorating: How to Create an Enchanting Garden.” Her goal is to teach people how to create scenes visible from inside the house, use unusual objects to decorate outside, create zones for living and give the house more curb appeal. She’ll also offer tips on making mosaic stepping stones.

“I really believe that every view from your home should be beautiful,” Davey said, citing a blank fence where she’d “hang some stuff there ... so when you’re sitting at your kitchen table you have something to look at that makes you happy.”

Before becoming a designer 18 years ago, Davey was a teacher. “I came into the business as more of one of those people who like to rear-range furniture. I feel compelled to create balance and harmony in three dimensions no matter where I am,” she said.

When remodeling her home, she took a few design courses, but soon found people seeking her advice — mainly for interior spaces where she would take “a fresh look,” hence her business name. But after working with real-estate agents to spruce up homes to give them more curb ap-

peal, she found that exterior spaces could benefit from a fresh look as well.

That could mean “trimming things, removing plants, adding plants, adding a feature,” she said. Several hundred yards later, she’s ready to present what she’s learned along the way in her class.

Davey said she assumes everyone in her class will have a basic yard, with some structure. “This is about taking it to a whole other level, hav-ing it be expressive of who you are, having some fun with it, giving it some sparkle.

Top, Kit Davey added a touch of whimsy to her own backyard by creating a stepping stone out of old dominoes and Scrabble tiles. Be-low, Davey assembled a seating area from a cobalt-blue bench and three pine bedposts, which she found at the De Anza flea market.

repairing a hole with pressed leaves, Davey and Sweet painted a dead cherry tree blue-purple.

“I can’t tell you how cool that tree looked,” Sweet said.An artist, Sweet is a self-admitted pack rat. “She just has a way to display it better, so you can see it and enjoy

it,” she said. “It freed me up. It really did.”“I had too much, which was really oppressive. It made me feel bad

about myself. It was hideous ... and I was overwhelmed. I dreaded it daily, but I could never get myself to deal with it,” she added.

Part of the process was working together to glue tiles into the entryways and making the entrances more appealing.

“We found a dead rat under all that lumber. Wow, talk about bad feng shui,” she said.

A couple of years ago Davey had an opportunity to re-examine her own backyard, after a fierce storm crashed a huge tree into her house. The new tree-less configuration left her with sun where there had been shade, as well as a chance to follow some of her own design principles.

“One of the things I like to do is make little stories or vignettes,” she said, pointing to a stick necklace enhancing a Buddha.

She’s not above incorporating found objects — from beer-bottle caps to large iron coils or odd pieces of glass — and arranging them into scenes. Many items are discovered at garage sales or even the side of the road (chairs, now repainted to look like a set). Plastic dinosaurs and lizards are nailed to a corner of her fence.

“I always say if you’ve got three or more of something, it’s a col-lection,” Davey said.

Davey not only enjoys the hunt for oddities but the interaction with clients to create order out of what’s special to them.

“I give people pure design advice, all sorts of ideas, to create cohesion, beauty,” she said, but the real purpose is “so their own homes really reflect who they are. ... It’s all about creating a nest or a refuge that makes you feel good to be in.” ■Associate Editor Carol Blitzer can be e-mailed at [email protected]. M y last green column com-mented on

the lack of awareness about universal design that designers, archi-tects and homeowners concerned about green and energy conserva-tion have. Basically, remodels and new construction should proactively include universal-design features in all designs so that 4-year-olds, 84-year-olds and anyone in between, as well as folks in wheelchairs, would have complete acces-sibility in all their activities with ease and safety for the duration of their lives.

Following green guidelines, it is almost al-ways more efficient in terms of waste, time, energy and money to remodel than to demol-ish an existing home, clear the lot and build from scratch. There are always a few excep-tions, but these are rare.

And if people are really attached to their land and love their neighborhood like I do, a major remodel to incorporate universal-de-sign elements while “greening up” your home is a preferred step in planning for the future, rather than being forced to leave in your old age because of some temporary or long-term physical limitation that may occur.

The reason this is not an issue in commer-cial buildings is because these buildings for many years have had to meet ADA (Ameri-cans with Disabilities Act) compliances to remain open. There is always a ramp if there are steps into the building. Elevators will take you to any floor you want. The public bathrooms have clearances for wheelchair access and lower sink heights with hands-free faucets. The thresholds at the doors are minimal and hallways are wider and more gracious.

Public facilities with showers have curb-less showers with a five-foot diameter, re-movable showerheads, non-scalding faucets and fold-down shower seats. So why not have these features in our homes?

Under the topic of “Community Design and Planning” on Build It Green’s Green-Point Rating guidelines, there are four design

aspects that count as green under the heading “Design for Diverse Households”:

1) “All homes have at least one zero-step entrance.” Note: It is best to make all people coming into your home feel welcome by be-ing able to come in through the front door, if at all possible.

2) “All main floor interior doors and pas-sageways have a minimum 32-inch clear pas-sage space.” Note: A standard 36-inch-wide interior door costs very little more than a narrower door when you are doing new con-struction. If you are building a new wall or addition, specifying 36-inch-wide minimum interior doors makes life so much easier for everyone under almost any circumstances.

3) “Locate at least a half bath on the ground floor with blocking in walls for grab bars.” Note: Why not design a curb-less shower to go in this accessible bathroom with the five-foot diameter clearance and go ahead and install the grab bars while doing a major remodel? We converted one existing Eichler home bath into a universal design bathroom by stealing the hall in the immediate area. It became the favorite bathroom in the house and won a National Design Award for Uni-versal Design. We converted it for a senior couple who had a grandson that visited of-ten and had to unexpectedly get around in a wheelchair at a very young age.

4) “Provide full function independent rental.” Note: If part of your home could be converted to house permanent “live-in” help for your own needs or if an elderly parent you need to care for can live in your home and still maintain a certain level of independence, you have a home that is flexible enough for you to stay in under most any changing fam-ily circumstances or a home that will have greater resale value when you do put it on the market.

And anyone can comfortably visit with you or stay in your home as a guest and feel to-tally welcome and cared for. Is this greener than being forced to purchase another home? You bet it is. ■Iris Harrell is CEO and president of Har-rell Remodeling, Inc. in Mountain View (www.harrell-remodeling.com). She can be reached at 650-230-2900 or [email protected].
