PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD — APRIL 14, 2019

The Mystery of Suffering

The speaker of today’s first reading is a victim. He speaks, but people beat him, pull out the hairs of his beard, slap and spit on him. Why? He suffers all this because he has spoken God’s word. Every morning God speaks to him and enables him to speak to others. This word gets him into trouble.

But the speaker does not quit. Nor does he curse God who gives him these pointed words. He remains firm, committed to the word God gives him, even in the face of resistance.

Although Isaiah wrote about the difficulties faced by faithful Israel in the midst of enemies, Christians read through these lines and see the image of Jesus. He received God’s word, spoke it with eloquence, and suffered at the hands of his enemies.

Do your words ever get you into trouble? Does it happen even when you say the right thing? If so, you stand in a long line of those who suffer because they are servants of God.

The victim on the cross hangs in full view in our churches. Christians can face the agony of suffering as it befell Jesus and as it comes to us, because we know there is something more.

PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD — APRIL 14, 2019

Like Mary and Joseph, families have

a mission to welcome Jesus into

their homes and lives, to “listen to

him, speak with him, take care of

him, protect him and grow with

him, and in this way improve the

world.” -Pope Francis

Sunday Faith Formation serves all parish

children. Weekly sessions for Pre-K through

8th Grade meet on Sundays from 10:15am to

11:20am. Two years of faith formation are

usually required prior to reception of the

Sacraments of First Reconciliation,

Eucharist and Confirmation. We always

welcome new team members as

catechists, substitutes, hall monitors and

teen assistants.

Are You Thirsting For God?

Are you someone who would like to learn more about your Catholic Faith? Do you know someone not baptized or baptized in a non-Catholic Christian tradition, who is thirsting for what it means to become Catholic?

Do you know someone already Catholic but has not yet received Confirmation & Communion?

Others may be thirsting too…

For each of us faith is a journey marked with moments of conversion along the way…we move from unbelief to initial faith, from sin to repentance, from painful isolation to the joyful experience of a loving community, from fear to love.

Faith, conversion, repentance, celebration and community ---five basic elements that are present in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The RCIA provides a setting where the journey of faith and moments of conversion can be celebrated within the local Church community.

RCIA is a place to ask questions and seek understanding. Come and See! Invite a friend! All are Welcome! RCIA meets Sunday’s at Little Flower School from 10:15 A.M. to 11:15 A.M.

Contact Ashley Davis at (240) 309-5513

Please join us as we continue our Stories of the Old Testament by James P. Campbell. This study takes us through the Old Testament using 100 carefully selected readings. Each reading is meant to be completed in one sitting using dozens of short easy-to-grasp informational pieces to supply background and commentary to understand the Old Testament. For more information please call or text Susan Baker at 301-904-7404.

A monthly reflection and practical challenge from Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori:

“And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning [within us] while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?’” (Gospel for April 21, Lk 24:30-32) A “fire in the belly,” passion, a drive — these are some of the ways we talk about others who can summon a deep, inner motivation and who make a difference. My brothers, can we say the same about our inner drive to go deeper in our Church’s teaching? Do our hearts “burn within us” and cause us to daily familiarize ourselves with the riches of our faith? Do we have a deep desire to be the kind of men who don’t stand silent when we hear our Church’s teaching denigrated?

In order to lead with faith, we need to know our faith. We can’t give what we don’t have. By God’s grace, may we each become disciples whose “hearts burn within us.

”Challenge by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori: This month, I challenge you to deepen your desire to have a heart “burning within you” for new knowledge of the Church’s teaching and doctrine. Invest five to 10 minutes a day reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church or other resource, listening to a Catholic talk online, or taking advantage of another formation opportunity. Second, I challenge you to talk with a brother in Christ about what you’re learning. (Excerpt from Columbia magazine)

Brother Knights of Holy Face Council 3849, encourage one another to continue to grow in our Catholic Faith and actively promote our core principles of charity, unity, fraternity, & patriotism.

ALERT

Email and Texting Scams

(The) Central Pastoral Administrative Office has noted an increase in the “phishing” email and tex-ting scams that have been sent to parishioners over the past year or so.

In these fraudulent schemes, your name seems to appear on an email address asking a parishioner to purchase i-Tunes or gift cards on your behalf. Sometimes these scams even ask that funds be sent because of some emergency.

This is a fraudulent “phishing” scam that has targeted a number of dioceses around the country. Most recently it appears that these fraudulent efforts have now expanded to text messages on mobile devices. This mobile phone scam is even more dangerous, because those perpetrating this fraud can receive gift card codes via texted picture or message.

Unfortunately there is currently very little that can be done to prevent or stop this type of fraud. If you learn of someone who actually sends money or gift cards in response to these scams, you may tell them to contact law enforcement. (No pastor would ever make these types of requests.)

The Pontifical Good Friday Collection

Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land.

Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offer religious education. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines.

The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees.

When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. For more information, visit www.myfranciscan.org/good-friday.
