BACKGROUND

As with most commodities, fluctuations in the price

trends of palm oil have a direct impact on local

growers and mill owners. With a large portion of

product exported to markets such as India, Europe,

China, Africa and the Middle East, the volatility of

global palm oil demand will affect its price.

This slowdown of palm oil exports often results in

an increased stockpile of palm oil, with mill owners

waiting for the upturn before selling again at an

acceptable price level.

This build-up of palm oil stocks, result in permanent

storage tanks reaching capacity within two to three

months before mill owners look for temporary

storage tanks. This is where flexible, reusable storage

tanks become invaluable. Flexible storage tanks

manufactured from high-density polyethylene

geomembrane material are designed to avoid the

absorption of oil or water, making it the perfect

choice for containment of palm oils, even in tropical

climates. As a result, oil quality is preserved and

money saved.

Solmax supplied the HDPE geomembrane liner

which was used by its partner PT. Teknindo

Geosistem Unggul (Geosistem) to construct the

temporary above-ground storage tanks to address

this challenge. The main benefit of using a HDPE

storage tank is ensuring high levels of containment

of the product in exposed applications, and

protecting the environment from leakage.

With the help of the re-usable, leak resistant and

customizable tanks, mill owners are able to stockpile

their refined palm oil for a couple of months,

without needing to construct a permanent stainless

steel tank.
