1. Select site, taking into consideration factors such as drainage, boundaries and surrounding buildings.

2. Excavate hole according to engineers report. Base of hole to be minimum of 200mm bigger than tank dimensions.

3. Add minimum of 100mm of sand or crusher dust to form a level base for the tank.

4. Position tank, taking special care to ensure it is level.

5. Fill tank with water to halfway, then backfill hole using free-draining, granular material. Compact in 200mm layers, using hand held vibrating plate compactor.

6. Connect inlet and outlet pipes to the septic tank. It is recommended that a flexible rubber connector is used, to allow for movement as the tank settles in.

Basic tips to care for your septic system

1. Septic systems require a healthy level of bacteria to work properly. Cleaning products such as bleach will kill bacteria, and affect the functionality of the septic process.

2. Do not flush items such as plastic, sanitary napkins, cat litter etc, as these are not biodegradable and will potentially block your system.

3. Septic tank systems have a network of underground absorption trenches that allow effluent to leach naturally into subsurface soil. Keep the surface of this ‘drainfield’ should be kept undisturbed with only a mowed grass cover.

4. It is recommended to de-sludge your septic tank every 3-5 years to remove accumulated solids that may have built up.
