party for your children and their friends. You can find or make inexpensive decorations like spiders, jack o’ lanterns, witches and black cats. Here are some creative ways to have some fun with food and your imagination. • Blindfold your guests and hand them a bowl

of peeled grapes. Tell them they’re eyeballs.• Next pass around another bowl with cold

cooked spaghetti and say it is intestines. • Put cooked and cooled mini hot dogs with a

little ketchup in another bowl and tell them it is fingers. Have your guests bob for apples.

• Hang white pillowcases with balloons as ghosts, play scary music, serve nachos, apple cider, Halloween decorated cupcakes and lots of candy.

Shortly after 8 p.m. October 6 Enrique Arturo Diemecke will leap onto the podium in Long Beach (he never just steps up: he always jumps,) raise his baton and begin his 12th season as

conductor of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra. He’ll be taking the orchestra he has headed for the entire century through Proko-fiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony that evening. The rest of the six-concert classical season includes music by Brahms, Beethoven, Sibelius, Gershwin and others, with concerts stretching through June 1, 2013 at the Terrace Theater of the Long Beach Performing Arts Center.

Two weeks later the orchestra will gather again, this time under the baton of Sarah Hicks, the first of a series of five guest conductors, for “To Boldly Go” the first of five concerts of the Long Beach Sym-phony Pops! series, sometime called the best indoor picnic around. Those concerts, including “A Night in Brazil” and “A Century of

Jazz,” this time in the Long Beach Arena just around the corner from the Terrace Theater.

The LB Symphony is a community treasure, more than 75 years old. A few years ago the continued existence of the orchestra was in doubt, with donations down and costs up, but the orchestra, musi-cians and conductor alike, managed to weather the storm and now classical subscriptions are steadily climbing. One secret is the series of Pops programs the orchestra plays. While other orchestras per-form only a few times a year the LBSO has concerts every few weeks during the season. And its musicians are drawn from the large body of professional musicians who work in the local film studios. Diem-ecke, who has conducted the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Mex-ico for 20 years, is also in his 24th year as the director of the Flint, Michigan Symphony and in his 7th year as director of the Buenos Aires Philharmonic which plays in the famous Teatro Colon. Poco después de las 8 de la noche, el 06 de octubre, Enrique Arturo Diemecke saltará al podio en Long Beach (nunca

“sube” siempre salta), levantará la batuta y comenzará su temporada número 12 como director de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Long Beach. Él va a dirigir a la orquesta que ha dirigido durante todo el siglo a través de Piano

on August 10, 2012, in Beverly Hills, the 27th Annual Imagen (Spanish for “image”) Awards was held, honoring

positive portrayals of Latinos and Latino culture in entertainment at a star-studded dinner ceremony held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The awards, hosted by breakout Latina star Gina Rodriguez, were announced before an audience of approximately five hundred attendees representing the entertainment industry and Latino community.

Celebrities in attendance included Lou Diamond Phillips, Wilmer Valderrama, Ian Gomez, Constance Marie, Jorge Garcia, Hector Elizondo, Tyler Posey, and many other Latino performers. Also in attendance was U.S. Secretary of Labor and former local congresswoman, the Honorable Hilda L. Solis. Winners were selected in 23 different categories from film, television and the internet, and judged by an independent panel of entertainment industry executives and Latino community leaders.P

El 10 de agosto del 2012, en Beverly Hills, se llevo a cabo el 27º anual de premios Imagen; en honor a la representación positiva de los

latinos y su cultura en el entretenimiento, en una ceremonia plagada de estrellas. La cena se celebró en el Hotel Beverly Hilton. Los premios, organizados por la nueva estrella Latina Gina Rodríguez, se dieron a conocer ante un público de aproximadamente 500 invitados quienes representaron la industria del entretenimiento y de la comunidad latina.

actor and television personality, Wilmer Valderrama, is best known for the role of Fez in the comedy “That Seventies Show,” 1998–2006, hosting the HBO series “Yo Momma”

2006 to 2007, and voicing the main character, Manny, in the Disney children’s show “Handy Manny.” He most recently starred in the 2012 NBC series “Awake.”

He has signed on for a recurring role on 20th’s “Raising Hope.” On the development front, Valderrama executive produces “The Ricardo Laguna Project” on MTV Tres, as well as the web series “King of the Floor” for Electus’ YouTube channel NuevOn.

A supporter of charities, Valderamma has been supporter of The National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP), a national membership organization that addresses the professional

needs of Latino/Latina independent producers. He also supports the Los Angeles Mission, which serves homeless men and women of downtown Los Angeles by providing emergency services such as shelter, food and clothing. In addition, the Los Angeles Mission also offers long-term residential rehabilitation programs, including education, job training, transitional housing and counseling.

Of Venezuelan and Colombian descent, Valderrama was born in Miami, Florida, moved to Venezuela when he was three years old, and then to Los Angeles when he was 13. He next appears in Spike Lee’s The Girl Is in Trouble. In addition, Wilmer has started a music career. The 32-year-old actor says his album will be in both English and Spanish. He also created a unique fashion label called Calavena. P

To Kill a Mockingbird, a novel by Harper Lee published in 1960, was immediately successful, winning the Pulitzer Prize for fiction that year. The novel is renowned for its warmth

and humor, despite dealing with the serious issues of rape and racial inequality.

The novel is widely taught in schools in English-speaking countries, with lessons that emphasize tolerance and decry prejudice. Lee also addresses with courage and compassion the social injustice issues of race, class, and gender in the American South of the 1930s.

Fifty years ago, in 1962, To Kill a Mockingbird was adapted into a movie that has also become a classic. The movie won Gregory Peck the Best Actor Oscar for his starring role as small-town lawyer Atticus Finch, as well as the lifelong friendship of the elusive Lee.

To date, it is Lee’s only published novel, and she has refused any personal publicity for herself or the novel since 1964. Lee, 79, abhors the limelight. She stopped talking to the press a few years after her

novel was published and turns down most requests for appearances. However, she maintained a close relationship with the Peck family.

So when Gregory Peck’s widow, Veronique Peck, invited her to receive the Los Angeles Public Library Literary Award in 2005, Lee accepted. She traveled to L.A. by train from her home in Monroeville, Alabama, where she’s lived all her life, and that was fictionalized in the book and movie. When presented with the Award, she simply said to the crowd, “Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”

To Kill a Mockingbird has been subject to campaigns for its removal from public classrooms, often for its use of racial epithets. Scholars also note the black characters in the novel are not fully explored, and some black readers receive it ambivalently, although it has an often profound effect on many white readers.

Atticus Finch has served as a role model and inspiration for generations of readers. If you have not read the book or seen the film, we recommend you do both. P

Thomas Middleton’s “The Changeling,” at the Long Beach Playhouse, tells an old story of sex and murder entwined. A classic of the Jacobean stage, it was first performed 390 years

ago. It opens in previews August 30, with a grand opening September 1, and runs through September 29.

In the play, Beatrice is engaged to marry a man she does not love, so she hires the hideous De Flores to solve the problem by killing her betrothed. She will pay him well for the murder, but does not want to give him what he really wants: her.

The play is nearly four hundred years old but director Dave Barton has adapted and updated the work for modern audiences. Instead of swords and Jacobean finery, the play uses guns for violence, modern dress and video screens to bring the action that was off-stage onto the stage. Barton, who is the founder of the Rude Guerilla Theatre Company in Santa Ana and the Monkey Wrench Collective which

produces plays around Southern California, has trimmed the play a bit but leaves its language intact. His actors have had little problem mastering the play’s intricacies.

“Put a Jacobean tragedy in modern dress and, aside from the language, it’s indistinguishable from today’s news headlines,” Barton has said. “(It’s) full of backstabbing, politics, mental illness, sex, bloodshed and comedy; the play’s concerns about moral fidelity, sexual honesty, the war between men and women and the power money has to corrupt feel very contemporary.

“We’ve staged scenes onstage that characters describe seeing off-stage, use blood bags quite liberally, heat up the sexual scenes, embrace all of the dirty jokes and swap guns for swords. I promise that the Long Beach Playhouse patrons have never seen anything like it...unless they watch the nightly news.” P

Shore Olympic Pool.For any other opera company, doing an opera in Long Beach’s

Aquarium of the Pacific might be a challenge, a new experience. For Long Beach Opera, it’s “Been there, done that.”

The Aquarium’s three-story 142,000 gallon tank filled with exotic sea life and coral will be the backdrop for LBO’s multi-media performance of English composer Gavin Bryars’ “The Paper Nautilus” in three performances set for September 7, 8 and 9, all at 8 p.m.

The opera is the first work in LBO’s “Outer Limits” series, a multi-year project funded by a $300,000 grant from the Andrew Mellon Foundation. The grant will pay for at least one production a year from 2012-2015 and two productions a year thereafter.

“The Paper Nautilus” is a work featuring six percussion instruments, two pianos and two singers, soprano Ashley Knight and mezzo-soprano Peabody Southwell. It will be sung in French, Latin, and English. The performance will feature dancers from the Nannette Brodie Dance Theatre, video projections by Adam Fleming and lighting by Adam

Fleming. The Los Angeles Percussion Quartet will be featured, and the entire production will be designed. Directed and conducted by LBO’s Artistic and General Director Andreas Mitisek.

“Paper Nautilus” is the perfect opera for the Aquarium of the Pacific. Bryars’ work, just one seventy-minute act, merges poetry and prose from several centuries and several different viewpoints to spin a fascinating and exhilarating story about the mysteries of the sea, which will be enhanced in this production by real sea creatures as well as dance, lighting and video clips. A dramatic cantata, commissioned originally by Theatre Cryptic in Glasgow, this is the first U.S. production (and the first in an aquarium.)

The libretto features poetry by Lebanese-American poet and artist Etel Adnan, Scottish poet Jackie Kay, French scientist Marie Curie, Pope Leo XIII and the Bible.

LBO’s regulars 2013 season begins January 27 with the first of three performances of Phillip Glass’ “The Fall of the House of Usher” and performances of Gabriel Ortiz’ “Unicamente la Verdad,” Stewart Copeland’s “Tell-Tale Heart,” Michael Gordon’s “Van Gogh and Ernest Bloch’s “Macbeth.” P

Back-to-school for many families means back to homework battles. After a summer off from the nightly grind of math worksheets and book reports, you and your child may be

bracing for another year of tears and late-night cramming.But the debate over homework is also happening across the nation,

with parents, educators and advocates for children weighing in on the value of out-of-school assignments and asking how much is too much.

“There’s far more homework being assigned over the last generation to far younger children,” says Alfie Kohn, the author of The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing. “There’s no good evidence for any homework, but that very concept makes people nervous.

Not so, counters Duke University psychology professor Harris Cooper, a renowned researcher on the effects of homework. “There is [research] support for homework, but only in moderation,” says Cooper, author of The Battle Over Homework: Common Ground for Administrators, Teachers and Parents.

Cooper supports the “10-minute rule,” which advises 10 minutes of homework a night multiplied by the child’s grade level. Thus, a first-grader would have 10 minutes of homework per night, a second-grader 20 minutes, and homework time would increase by grade level up to two hours for a high-school senior.

If you believe that your child is receiving more homework than he can reasonably handle, talk to his teacher. But before you complain that he’s spending three hours a night on homework, make sure that it’s time “on task,” and not spent texting, chatting on the phone or surfing the Internet.

If your child is consistently struggling and you find yourself locked

in nightly homework battles, her teacher may be willing to make accommodations, from setting time limits for at-home assignments to reducing the workload.

But if the problems seem widespread among your child’s classmates, Kohn advises researching your school’s homework policy – if there is one – and organizing with other parents to speak with the principal or district officials about what changes can be made.Meantime, Challenge Success, a project of the Stanford University School of Education that researches and advocates for positive change in the education system, offers these tips to parents trying to guide their kids through nightly homework assignments:

Act as cheerleaders, not homework police. Provide necessary supplies and express interest in the content, but let the teacher intervene if the child regularly fails to finish homework or do it correctly.

When scheduling after-school activities, keep in mind your child’s homework load. Work with your child to determine a healthy schedule of activities that allows for homework, studying, adequate sleep and play.

Recognize that children learn in different ways and have different work styles. Some kids can get it done all at once; others need breaks. Some like quiet spaces while others prefer music. Discuss with your child what works best for her.

Advocate for healthier homework policies at your school. Start by communicating with your own child’s teacher.

In 1985, Dr. John Paul Micha began conducting clinical research trials at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach. Since then, several doctors have joined him and formed

the Women’s Cancer Research Foundation. Their mission: investigative studies that enhance new treatment options, benefit patients’ quality of life and improve upon the cure rates for women with gynecologic and breast cancer.

Recently WCRF announced that it is offering a consent form for Spanish speaking women to better understand treatment options without the use of a translator. Catrina Lopez, C.C.R.C., Clinical Research Director, WCRF, explained that the new consent form was created so that Spanish-speaking patients could understand thoroughly and exactly what’s being done in the study and for what reason it’s being done and so that it is available to them through the entire time of the study. Before, they relied on translators.

WCRF is doing larger studies and wants to ensure it is doing everything it can so that more patients have the opportunity to

participate. Patients are identified as potential participants by a nurse/doctor and then referred to the WCRF. At WCRF, patients review the studies available and the research staff answers patients’ questions. The consent form is reviewed thoroughly by patients, who can remove themselves at any time for any reason. After they sign the consent, a screening process begins, including exams that could take up to two weeks to ensure qualification for a study. If a patient meets the inclusion criteria for a study, they begin treatment. Usually patients stay on a therapy until they no longer respond to it. At that point, there is a 30-day follow-up and screening process and testing is repeated to ensure patients health. WCRF follows the patient every 3 months to ensure they are healthy.

An income interruption due to a disability isn’t something you can afford to ignore. According to the Social Security Administration, more than one in four 20-year-olds will become disabled at some point before they retire. And 50 percent of working Americans would suffer financial issues

Isn’t that a problem only on the East Coast? Actually, although children’s blood-lead values continue to drop in recent years, we still have children in Long Beach who are lead poisoned. Most

cases involve young children who have ingested lead based paint or dust from their home because of their hand-to-mouth behaviors.

In 1978, the Federal government banned the use of lead in paint. However, 86 percent of the housing in the City of Long Beach is older than 1978. The older a structure is, the higher the probability of lead based-paint being in the home. The probability of lead based paint in pre-1940 homes is 98 percent because it was used more extensively at that time. If your children live in a house or apartment built before 1978 and the paint is peeling and chipping, it is very important to have your children tested for lead.

Lead poisoning is extremely harmful, especially to young children. Low levels of lead exposure can have serious life-long effects on a child’s growth, ability to learn, and behavior, including loss of IQ points and hyperactivity. The only way to know whether a child has lead in their body is a blood lead test.

Other sources of lead in our environment pose a risk. Some imported pottery, especially from Mexico and China, may contain enough lead to cause severe lead poisoning. Some parents’ work

environments involve exposure to lead, which not only poses a threat to these adults for lead poisoning, but also can expose their children through “take-home” exposure. This happens when the adult comes home from work wearing their work clothing and/or shoes. The lead on their clothing/shoes can then be transferred to the home surfaces or directly to the children by a hug and the hand-to-mouth behavior of small children.

If you plan to remodel or renovate your home, you should know that removal of old paint can be very hazardous. Unsuspecting parents may become involved in do-it-yourself home remodeling/renovation without realizing the dangers. If you live in a home built before 1978 and plan to remodel/renovate, you should first consult with a contractor certified in lead-based paint abatement.

Parents can help prevent childhood lead poisoning by washing children’s hands with soap and water before every meal and keeping the home and children’s toys free of dust and dirt. Blood lead testing is recommended for children under age 6. Ask your child’s doctor if your child has been tested.
