It is time to free Mary and let God have her own maternal face

by Christine Schenk | May. 26, 2016

It is May, and like every good Catholic girl of a certain age, I remember this as the

month we celebrate Mary, the mother of Jesus. A lot of terrific recent scholarship is help-

ing my generation recover from earlier interpretations of Mary as a revered (if impossible

to imitate) virgin-mother role model often portrayed as silent, passive, and obedient.

I recently listened to a podcast [1] by Dr. Elizabeth Johnson, a Sister of St. Joseph,

who spoke eloquently about "arguably the most celebrated woman in the Christian tra-

dition." Mary is commemorated the world over in famous paintings, icons, prayers, and

sacred music. Countless schools, hospitals, and churches are named for her. Johnson

respects the church's long tradition of venerating Mary and works hard to connect that

tradition to today: "What do we say in our time in this multicultural world? In this genera-

tion, who is she, and how can we carry forward tradition in a way that is liberating and

healing in a world so in need?"

In the church's early centuries, Mary, mother of Emmanuel ("God with us") was

quickly honored as the mother of God or Theotokos (God-bearer -- literally, "heavy with

God"). At the same time, the church was growing rapidly among a pagan people ac-

customed to worshipping God in feminine metaphor as well as masculine. It didn't take

long for new Christians to apply feminine-divine imagery to Mary -- and the rest is history.

"Christians baptized pagan imagery -- it was a good missionary strategy," says Johnson.

But in the end we lost sight of the historical person, Mary of Nazareth, a poor, de-

vout, Jewish woman from the small town of Nazareth in Galilee who suffered under Ro-

man oppression. Her son was first tortured and then executed by a brutal political re-

gime at the behest of the religious leaders who controlled the populace.

Today, Johnson pleads, "We should let God have her own maternal face" and

points to the diversity of imagery [2] in the Bible. It is time she says, to "free Mary from the

historic burden of carrying the feminine divine, and let her be herself and rejoin us in the

communion of saints." I agree with Johnson, but will confess to a bit of nostalgia for my

own youthful impressions of Mary as a powerful carrier of the divine feminine, though I

would never have named her as such then. Back in the day, all good Catholics knew

that Mary had at least as much clout with God "the Father" as Jesus did!

Special Collection—Priest Retirement Fund

This weekend all parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will be asked to give generously to sup-port the Retirement Fund for Archdiocesan Priests. At each Mass on June 4th and 5th, a special collection will be taken to benefit this important program.

Currently, the fund provides for more than 100 priests who are retired. Over the next ten years, that number is expected to increase significantly. With minimal compensation, and in many cases, no pension, these men often retire with nothing to fall back upon. Your contributions can change that.

The Priest Retirement Fund offers us a way to give back to our Catholic priests who have served us so faithfully. Your contribution will help archdiocesan priests live modestly and peacefully in retirement. Help us offer thanks for their years of devotion to God, and faithful service to our parish communities. Look for the brochures in the pews for more information.

If you haven’t made your donation to Together in Mission yet this year, envelopes are available in

Fr. Dick’s Farewell Party June 26, 2016

Outdoor Mass at 10:30 a.m. and Re-ception to follow

St. Francis Xavier Lower Parking Lot

Please join us for our final farewell to Fr. Dick on June 26th. This will be a great big

SFX Community affair. The 10:30 a.m. Mass will be outside. There will be no 8:30 a.m. or 5 p.m. Mass that day. If you would like to donate a

food item for the reception, we need salads, rolls and

desserts. Please let the parish office know if you plan on

bringing one of these items at 818/504-4400.

Come one, Come all… This is our time to celebrate Fr. Dick’s 16 years of service to St. Francis Xavier Parish.

Graduation Parish Service Award The St. Francis Xavier Parish Service Award is in recogni-tion of a student or students that show exemplary Chris-

tian spirit of service to the parish community of St. Francis Xavier. This year we have two recipients, and picking just two was very difficult. This particular eighth grade class

has been very involved in our parish community. This one class alone has had eleven students serving our communi-

ty as altar servers. Both recipients of this award have earned the position of senior server after being responsible and showing leadership skills as acolytes. Over the years these students have served our community by altar serv-ing at our Holy Triduum, and serving as the school sacris-tan, a position normally reserved for an adult. They have participated in Sandwich Sundays preparing lunches for

the homeless in Burbank, served soup at our Lenten Soup Suppers, and provided years of service providing hospital-ity after Masses. They have represented our parish as very articulate ambassadors and dedicated an abundance of hours to the St. Francis Stage Company. They are two

students always eager to help any way possible. We are proud of our young St. Francis Xavier members and we hope they continue to serve their community even after they graduate. This award goes to Lela Spellman and

Daniel Maddigan.

SANDWICH SUNDAY—JUNE 19TH

Please join us in making sandwiches for the homeless of Burbank on Sunday, June 19th.

Bring enough cheese, meat and bread to make 30 sandwiches. We will provide the condiments and baggies. We meet

in Holy Cross Hall at 1 p.m.

Our Dear Parish Family, A very generous and anonymous gift was given to Tyler and our family. Although we have tried, finding out who are responsible for it has proven to be impossible. So let us say thank you to everyone. Whether you were a part of this specific gift or not, you are all parts of the gift and blessing of this community to us. There are no

words to express what you all have meant to us over the years, but please know we are deeply and eternally thankful to God for you, and that you are all, always in our prayers. Please know too, that your generosity, which we believe is an answer to our prayers, will be used toward Tyler's extraordinary col-lege needs and housing costs. Again, thank you all so very, very much.

Love and Blessings. Jim, Rosie, Tyler, Megan and Ryan Roope

DID YOU KNOW? Pool safety is about more than swimming

Swimming is a fun way to have some fun and beat the heat during the summer. Parents should teach their children about swimming safety, including how to identify and handle uncomfortable situa-tions. Although you may be watching closely to make sure your kids are safe in the water, don’t forget about when they’re walking around, sitting out by the pool, using the restrooms or out of sight. Teach your children what to do when they feel uncomfortable at the pool, and let them know it is okay to walk away and find a parent or trusted adult at any time. For more information and a copy of the article called “Know the Rules…Summer Safety Tips to Teach Children” from the National Center for Missing and Exploited, email: [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

May is Healthy Vision Month and we at SFX can help the Lions Recycling For Sight Pro-gram. Please look through dresser drawers and closets for used prescription eyeglass-es and prescription and non-prescription sunglasses. We need everyone to donate their used eyeglasses! The donated glasses

will be shipped to a regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center where they will be cleaned and prepared for distribution in devel-oping countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inacces-sible, thus people lack access to this basic service. With your old glasses, others can read, attend school, gain employment and take care of their families. To donate used glasses (including sunglasses and reading glasses), place them in the collection box marked Lions Recycle For Sight located at the Church’s entrance. The need is great! Your Used Eyeglasses Can Help Someone Read, Learn, and See the World Better!
