HAMLIN - The LincolnJournal has announced anevening of candidateforums, set to take place justtwo days before early votingbegins in Lincoln County.Last week, the LincolnCounty Commission gavepermission for The LincolnJournal to use the commis-sion hearing room at theLincoln County Courthousefor the forums on Mondayevening, October 22, 2012,beginning at 6 p.m. Theevent will be open to thepublic and will also berecorded on video, and laterposted at the newspaper’sWebsite, www.lincolnjour-nal.com.

Journal ManagingEditor Seán O’Donoghuewill facilitate the forumswhich, it is hoped, will fea-ture all the candidates forcounty elected offices. Allcandidates have been con-tacted either by phone,social networking or in per-son, regarding the event.The candidates invitedinclude:

•The two candidates forLincoln County Prosecutor.

•The six candidates forLincoln CountyCommission (three candi-dates seeking a six-year

“We were delightedwith the response to ourone-on-one interviews withthe candidates for the Mayprimary election, both thisyear and in 2010. For thegeneral election, we’vedecided to change the for-mat and bring the candidatestogether,” said O’Donoghuelast week. “We hope itmight foster discussionamong the hopefuls, andgive voters an opportunityto hear from those whowould be their public repre-sentatives,” he added.

The running order forthe evening, and the approx-imate total time allocated foreach of the forums, will beas follows:

•Prosecuting Attorneycandidates (2) - 15 minutes

•County Commissioncandidates (6) - 45 minutes

•Sheriff candidates (4) -30 minutes

•Assessor candidates (2)- 15 minutes

•County Clerk candi-dates (4) - 30 minutes

The format will bebroadly similar for each setof candidates. Each candi-date will be allowed a briefopening statement. Then,the moderator will ask anopening question of one ofthe candidates. Discussionamong the candidates onthat issue will be encour-aged, before the next ques-tion is asked. Each candi-date will be offered anopportunity to be the first toanswer at least one question.At the conclusion of theforum, candidates will beallowed to make a briefclosing statement.

Questions for the eventwill be formulated byO’Donoghue and will notbe shown to the candidatesin advance. “If the candi-dates review our interviewvideos from the primarye l e c t i o n s(www.youtube.com/lincol-njournal), they’ll see thatour questions were fair andrelevant. I won’t be trying tocatch anyone out. Rather,the questions will deal withthe issues facing LincolnCounty and our region, andthe offices the candidates areseeking to secure,” saidO’Donoghue. “We hope thequestions, and especially theanswers, will generate cor-dial discussion among thehopefuls,” he added.

Box308, Hamlin, WV 25523.Preferably, questions canalso be sent by e-mail to [email protected] submissions received bythe close of business onFriday, October 19, will bereviewed and considered forinclusion. Questions shouldbe concise and not directedto any candidate in particu-lar. “When preparing thequestions, I’ll take intoaccount any suggestionssubmitted,” saidO’Donoghue last week.“We hope the forums will beinformative for the voters.Our timing of the event,hours before the final presi-dential debate at LynnUniversity in Boca Raton,Florida, is deliberate. Wehope that two hours of con-versations with the countycandidates will serve as theperfect appetizer for thefinal and possibly decisivenational debate on our tele-vision screens,” he conclud-ed.
