“She’s never short of company.”

Jeanete and her family were so pleased when

they discovered Summerset serviced apartments.

After looking at options, a serviced apartment

meant that Dorrie could continue to live

independently, with help at hand.

There’s always people close by and Dorrie

is enjoying the new friendships she has formed

at Summerset.

“The other residents and sta are wonderful”

says Dorrie.

Knowing Dorrie is in a safe community

environment gives Jeanete great peace of mind.

“ I KNOW MUM’S SAFE, COSY AND CONTENT.”

YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE

One of the best parts about being agood neighbour is keeping an eyeout for the good things others areup to.

We had that firmly in mindwhen we launched Neighbourly, our social media for neighboursand locals to connect.

It helps neighbours andresidents to keep in touch, swapideas or talk about issues. Now wehave launched a new phase forNeighbourly, called notices.co.nz.

It used to be you had to sign upto see what’s happening. But wehave made some parts public, soyou can see the latest news andevents in your town or theneighbouring one by justbrowsing around.

Maybe you’re looking to moveto a new suburb, have a bach inanother town or want to check outthe place your parents havemoved to. It’s easier to find now.

Plus we have launchedwebsites on Neighbourly so youcan find news from this paper.

Taking on the skateboarding worldSTEPH RANGI

‘‘Really, I just had toturn up on the dayand skate.’’

Bowman Hansen won a big skateboarding competition in Manly, Australia last weekend. BRENT SHIPLEY

A former Taupo man has provenhe has what it takes when itcomes to skateboarding, qualify-ing for the World Championshipin the United States.

Bowman Hansen, 24, took onthe Vans Park Series ContinentalChampionship and was the onlyKiwi representative at Manly,Sydney.

With his impressive boardskills Hansen took out the titleagainst 25 other competitors andalso qualified as a challenger forthe World Champion Finals inChicago later this year.

‘‘I was super stoked. It will bethe first time I will be going overto the States,’’ Hansen said.

‘‘[I’m] just really happy I’mgoing over for a big competition.’’

Skateboarding became apassion for Hansen 14 years agowhen he watched his olderbrother and his friend head out onthe boards. Hansen ended up get-ting himself one and hasn’t lookback since.

As part of the Vans Park Serieslast weekend, Hansen had to showoff his skateboarding skills whichincluded all the tricks of his trade.

‘‘Really, I just had to turn up onthe day and skate,’’ he said.

And skate he did. With his performance at this

latest championship earning himthe top spot, Hansen said it was afoot in the door for the directionhe wanted to go.

‘‘I want to be going into the ProCircuit for skateboarding,’’ hesaid.

‘‘Touring competitively, pass-ing my knowledge on young

grommets and just still doingwhat I love without any majorinjuries.’’

Being injured won’t stop Han-sen though, as he managed tocompete in the Vans Park Serieswith a torn meniscus in his rightknee.

He has also had to deal with atwo broken femurs and twofractured femurs during hisskateboarding careers.

‘‘You just got to take it andpush through it,’’ he said.

So far, Hansen has been havinga pretty good run with hisskateboarding.

Just last month he was back inNew Zealand competing in thesixth annual Mangawhai BowlJam - an event which he also won.

Hansen, who is now based inSydney, was to fly back to NewZealand on Thursday to gear up totake on the Bowlzilla in Welling-ton where there is $15,000 inprizes up for grabs.

‘‘It’s been a bit of a winningstreak this year,’’ he said.

‘‘Just hope I can keep it up.’’

‘‘Dental treatment should be equal acrossdistricts.’’

‘‘Why does Rotorua have so many dentaltechnicians and Taupo so few?’’

TLC RESIGNATIONThe resignation of LinesCompanies CEO Brent Norris isbeing applauded by many.

The easiest thing for a newCEO, when taking over acompany with such poor levels ofcustomer satisfaction, and a veryunpopular charging system wouldhave been to change.

To simply revert to volumetriccharging, and drop capacitycharging. But he stuck to capacitycharging, and he tried very hardto bring good customer service, lift the networks performance, and bring an understanding of the‘‘why’’ to the community.

I daresay the new incumbentwill go back to volumetriccharging.

I don’t think the celebrationswill last long.

The 50 per cent of Turangi TLCcustomers that are holiday homeowners will effectively gain asubsidy from the full timeresidents, as they will enjoy anetwork built to meet their peakdemand, but they will pay only forthe few units they use in the skiseason.

I think we will see electricity

unit costs near double in the nextfew years, substantial increases inthe daily charge, and we will seeplenty of people with no optionbut to simply turn off appliancesand real energy poverty, especially for those on low andfixed incomes.

There was still a lot wrongwith TLC, but Brent was workinghard to put it right.

DENTAL CLINIC CLOSEDWhen I was at the dental clinicrecently with my child, I askedwhy the Taupo Primary SchoolClinic was not open all the time.

I was informed that they didn’thave the staff to keep it openpermanently.

Taupo population is about36,000 and Rotorua has about56,800 yet they have 19 dentaltechnicians and Taupo has fivedental technicians.

Surely Taupo should have atleast 10 technicians if youcompare the populations. Thenchildren would not have to go forso long between appointments.Due to the fact that Taupo hasonly five technicians, one school

in the Taupo region is missedevery year.

The best part of all dental visitsis the cleaning of the teeth withcool, flavoured toothpaste yet thiswas not available as the machinehad broken down in the thirdterm of 2016 and in February 2017,was still not fixed which I thoughtwas appalling. So why doesRotorua have so many dentaltechnicians and Taupo so few?

Why is equipment not fixed morepromptly?

Jonelle SaundersWe asked on Facebook what

you thought about theLoveTaupo sign and if youthought it should be permanentor just rolled out once a year forthe Ironman? Over 100 peopleresponded. Here are some oftheir thoughts.

Natalya Kapua: Keep it.Beautiful spot for it near the lakeand its awesome for photos.

Michelle Caldwell: Definitelykeep it! It has created a huge buzzfor the town on social media.

Shauny Kiel: Keep it! I’dprefer that over that random redthing in the park across fromKFC.

Janna Cowley: Keep it! Wouldlove to see it again in Augustwhen I come back for themarathon.

Andreia Short: It’s a greatidea and should be a permanentfeature, just not there wheresomeone is going to get killedwalking across a blind corner tothe median strip to take a photo ofit. Saw so many close calls onSunday.

Big slogan seeking permanent homeROBERT STEVEN

An Auckland pair pose with the sign.

Where should a permanent#LOVETAUPO sign go?

That’s what Destination GreatLake Taupo are asking the com-munity over the next few weeks.

A 2-metre-tall temporary signwent up on March 1 to entertainall those visiting Taupo forIronman NZ.

Some however, such as Neigh-bourly user Katrin Wilson, saythe temporary sign’s locationbetween the Roberts St bars andthe lake is not ideal though.

‘‘There’s no need to spoil thenatural vista of the lake and

mountains with that sign,’’ shesaid.

Others, such as Andreia Short, said on the Taupo TimesFacebook page that the risks of aroadside attraction needed to beconsidered.

‘‘It’s a great idea and should bea permanent feature, just notthere where someone is going toget killed walking across a blindcorner to the median strip to takea photo of it. Saw so many closecalls on Sunday,’’ she said.

Anna McLaren, DestinationGreat Lake Taupo’s communi-cations manager, said the organis-ation were keen to hear practical

suggestions from the Taupo com-munity.

A permanent spot on thelakefront was one consideration.

‘‘We also thought about puttingit at the top of Control Gate Hill bythe lookout. If it was a permanentone we might make it bigger,’’McLaren said.

‘‘The other option would be atthe start of the ETA [East TaupoArterial road] where a lot oftraffic is diverting around Taupo. We’re thinking about things thatwill attract people into Taupotown, but we’re not sure if that’dbe the right thing.’’

Concerns about vandalismwere valid, but the risks could bemanaged, McLaren said.

‘‘That could be said for any ofthe sculptures we’ve got around

town, and they’ve been wellrespected.

‘‘It’s easy to cover these in anti-graffiti vinyl covering. We do thaton the NZTA signs when you’recoming into town. The graffiti justcomes off.

McLaren said followingfeedback, a decision would bemade by the end of March. Then, following four to six weeks tocomplete a resource consent pro-cess, the new sign would beunveiled around June 3.

Foster carers week isbeing celebratedSTAFF REPORTER

Caring for children in need is aprivilege, foster parents Diane andGraham Bullock say.

The Taupo couple cared for morethan 30 children over the years inNew Zealand and in England, wherethey emigrated from four years ago.

Diane said the couple maintaineda non-judgmental attitude about thefamilies they meet.

‘‘We’re not perfect, we’re justdoing our best,’’ she said.

Married for 36 years, the couplefirst began foster caring when theirdaughters were 7 and 10 years old.

Foster Care Awareness Weekruns from March 5 to 11.

The incoming chief executive for

the Ministry for Vulnerable Chil-dren, Grainne Moss, said any childaffected by trauma needs under-standing and a loving place tobelong, so they can flourish,’’ Mosssaid.

‘‘I’m always so impressed thatNew Zealanders from all walks of lifeare providing not just a home, butcaring relationships that last wellbeyond the time a child might staywith a family,’’ she said.

‘‘These caregivers play an import-ant role in adding to a child’s senseof community – something everychild deserves.’’

Getting kids keen on being green is the aim of anew series targeted at young families.

Fun and easy activities to teach children aboutconservation which can be replicated in the backyard is the point of the new Kids Greening TaupoEvent series.

Activities for the series will include exploringNew Zealand’s nocturnal creatures in a darknesstent by torch, art with natural resources, eye spytubes, and getting to know water and land insectsby magnifying glass.

‘‘Getting youth outdoors in nature is the bestway to build eco-literal adults,’’ Kids Greening co-ordinator, Thea de Petris, said.

‘‘I am passionate about what this series offersour community, to not only enrich our localbiodiversity, but to install the love of nature inour young.’’

Kids Greening Taupo is a school based pro-gramme currently in a pilot with five local edu-cation centres and will be building on the Green-ing Taupo community days and initiatives toplant trees in their own backyards.

‘‘We want the community to join in plantingwildlife corridors of trees which will provide foodand shelter for the offspring of wildlife flourishingand over-flowing from the predator proof fencedWairakei Golf + Sanctuary,’’ co-ordinator, RobynEllis, said.

‘‘Let’s build back rich biodiversity in Taupo forour children together.’’

Four further events are planned throughoutthe year and include building homes for insectsand learning how to catch predators and guardianmedals can be earned by children participating.

The Greening Taupo event series is a responseto the keen community requests for other schoolsand families eager to get involved.

Anna Elwarth, community ranger for Depart-ment of Conservation (DOC), said the departmentsupports the vision of Greening Taupo and thefamily series.

‘‘Protecting our nature is a job that’s much big-ger than DOC alone,’’ she said.

‘‘Nature lies in the hands of all New Zealanderand this series engages the hearts, hands, andminds of our young to become involved.’’

The series will be launched on Sunday at theMusic in the Reserve event at the Waipahihi Bot-anical Gardens

Mountain biking is in her bloodand because of that Sammie Max-well put it all on the line duringthe national championshipswhere she took out a title.

Sammie (15) made the trek toWanaka last month for theAltherm New Zealand MountainBike National Championships atthe Cardrona Alpine Resort.Taking on three others, Sammiemanaged to not only be the firstfemale home but also the NewZealand under 17 champ.

The course took its toll on afew of the riders but Sammie waslucky to be stronger than it.

‘‘It was really technical. Therewere lots of crashes and peoplebeing carried off on backboardson the practice days,’’ she said.

The course included two lapswhich totalled 4.4 kilometres witha two metre elevation. Being ableto keep the same speed up hill aswell as down hill is what ledSammie to her victory - and alsobeing able to push through thepain.

‘‘I love the pain, it makes youpush yourself,’’ Sammie said.

Sammie’s love for mountainbiking stemmed from a promise ofgetting McDonald’s after a ridebut now, she wouldn’t have it anyother way.

Natasha Rive with the newly created New Zealand

webpage ROBERT STEVEN/FAIRFAX NZ

Natasha Rive has no shortage of initiative. So when the Tauhara College student noticed

that New Zealand was missing from the ‘‘Aroundthe World’’ section of an educational website, shewrote an email to the website’s creator.

‘‘I was kind of nervous, but I wanted our cul-ture to be known by more people,’’ she said.

The Sinect Software website is used byNatasha, 15, and her classmates at Tauhara Col-lege’s Special Needs Education unit every day.

The website was created by Special Edu-cational Needs IT specialist Ian Bean, who isbased in the UK.

Natasha sent Bean photos of Kiwi icons toinclude on the new page – jandals, a woolly sheep, the All Blacks, a pavlova, L&P, and a kiwi.

She was surprised to receive a reply from Beanthe next day – the New Zealand page was live andsharing photos of kiwis, ferns and the All Blackswith special needs learners across the world.

‘‘I felt proud that he’d added it in,’’ Natashasaid.

‘‘I hope my ideas make other people happy.’’Brenda Pilkinton, Tauhara College Special

Needs Unit teacher, said the new pages werehugely popular with Natasha’s classmates.

The website features slideshows that requirethe user to click on specific areas in order to pro-ceed.

‘‘It gives learners the opportunity to developtheir independent thinking and choice makingskills,’’ Pilkinton said.

Learners enjoy the repetitive nature of thesoftware, she said.

‘‘For a lot of our learners, it’s aboutmaintaining attention because they don’t alwaysaccess learning in the traditional way,’’ she said.

Pilkinton said the strength of the website wasthat it was very topical, featuring musicians likeEd Sheeran and characters from movies like TheWolverine, Star Wars: The Force Awakens andZootopia.

‘‘Often our learners are aware of these moviesand TV shows, and they enjoy seeing them used inthe educational material. It means our learnersfeel like they’re up-to-date with their peers.’’

‘‘It's also aboutlearning those lifeskills.’’

With Plunket Appeal Week uponus, teaching children the import-ance of helping others was onefocus for a local education centreas they helped fundraise forPlunket New Zealand.

Topkids Totara wanted toencourage their children to ‘Helpothers in support of Plunket’. Thechildren completed jobs forparents, grandparents, neighbours, aunties and uncles, with the money going straight toPlunket.

‘‘Each child did some littlechores at home and their familymembers donated money,’’ Leica

Durham, said. ‘‘It’s about teach-ing the children to look after eachother and to also take care ofothers. It’s also about learningthose life skills.’’

The centre managed to raise$523.80 and the children willproudly present their hard earnedmoney to a Plunket Representa-tive next week.

‘‘We had such an amazingresponse from our families andreally appreciated their support,

we were just blown away,’’ LouChambers, centre administrator, said.

To celebrate the fundraisingefforts, the centre held a familyfun day last Friday whereparents, grandparents, auntiesand uncles were invited for amorning tea and to see the chil-dren receiving certificates. Thechildren enjoyed having theirloved ones with them.

After 14 hours, 58 minutes and 3 seconds of swim-ming and covering 40.5 km from Turangi to LakeTaupo, Sam Muir James completed the longestswim of his life so far.

The Otaua swimmer, who has autism, hasfound a passion in tackling long distance openwater swims.

In April, Sam will set his sights on his majorgoal of successfully crossing the Cook Strait.

Last month, Sam entered the cold waters ofLake Taupo at 4am, greased down in axel grease.

His guide, open water swimming veteran Phil-lip Rush and coach Jane Logan followed alongsideSam in an IRB boat.

Sam’s mum Jane Muir James said Rushwanted Sam to attempt the Lake Taupo swimbefore he looked at him for the Cook Strait.

‘‘He wanted to get to know him because of hisautism.’’

Around the 26km mark, Sam said he started tofeel the effects of the swim.

‘‘I got a bit of cramp.’’He said he took his mum’s advice and ’’kicked

it out’’, until the final five kilometres when hisbody started to give up.

However, he made it onto the shores of LakeTaupo in front of a small crowd that had gathered.

Jane said she could not be any prouder of herson’s efforts.

‘‘I was quite tearful actually, it was such anepic swim.

‘‘I just yelled to all these people, this is my sonand he’s been in the water since 10 past 4 thismorning.’’

Jane said people all over the world had fol-lowed Sam’s progress through a live tracker.

He has received congratulation messages fromopen water swimmers and people with autism, who Jane said see him as a true inspiration.

She said the backlog of swimmers attemptingto cross the Strait, meant Sam has beententatively scheduled to cross the strait nextmonth.

For the meantime, Sam will have light trainingduties and his coach will focus on his speed work.

With the Cook Strait swim being around 26km,Jane said the Taupo swim was ideal preparation.

‘‘We’re hoping for the phone call and things arelooking really positive.’’

‘‘The whole schoolsat there, absolutelyglued to every wordthese leaders said.’’

Taupo Primary School put the callout for young leaders in Year 6 tostep forward.

Too many quality applicantsput their hand up – but ratherthan turning the keen childrenaway, the school created moreextra positions for the children.

Facilitator Janice Potts said allYear 6 pupils interested in classcouncillor positions wrotespeeches. Students who wrote thebest speeches were then invited topresent at an assembly.

‘‘The whole school sat there, absolutely glued to every wordthese leaders said,’’ Potts said.

Children were assignedpositions as class councillors andPB4L monitors [Positive Behav-iour for Learning]. Additionally, children were named headlibrarian, school milk monitor, delivering 500 boxes of milk eachday, and head technician, whoassists pupils and staff with com-puter problems.

‘‘It’s about just being able torock up, show respect, and offer

their ideas and their energy,’’Potts said.

Head librarian Hailey saidleaders needed to be responsive.

‘‘To be a leader, you try to behelpful to others by respectingthem and making sure they’rehappy,’’ she said.

Baxter, a PB4L monitor, said itwas important to be kind.

‘‘We’ve got show respect andempathy to the juniors.’’

STOCKTAKENational Park community board members Pete Pehi and John Chapman want to make

sure their part of the region doesn’t miss out on developments.

Overcrowdingsparks concernFRANCES FERGUSON

A Park and Ride service from thetownship of National Park to theTongariro Crossing is beingsuggested to take pressure off theovercrowded car parking areas.

National Park Community Boardmember, John Chapman said a Parkand Ride service in National Parkwould regulate visitors and providean alternative carpark for people topark and be transported by bus.

Up to 130,000 people a year do the20km crossing but there are only 65car parks at Mangatepopo and 35 atKetetahi. Chapman said the problemis only going to get worse if nothingis done soon.

‘‘It’s increasing exponentially allthe time and it’s creating logisticalproblems for the town in term ofsustainability.’’

A large number of visitors travelindependently, rather than use ashuttle and park at one end of thetrack, which Chapman says is caus-ing big problems.

‘‘I think one of the things wecould look at is a place for people topark with a small visitors’ centreand cafe. People could buy souvenirsand there could be an educationalcomponent.’’

Councillor Murray Wilson said

there were possibilities in theNational Park village that needed tobe looked into.

One option included looking atland at the railway station.

‘‘It’s a fenced area, it has a hardsurface, it’s got power, it’s got sewer-age it’s got a lot of things there.’’

Wilson said it was likely that theDepartment of Conservation wouldplace restrictions in future on theTongariro Crossing because of allthe damage to the landscape andissues to do with parking.

Committee member Simon O’Neilsaid DoC had been campaigning, along with local shuttle operators, toencourage visitors to use services atone of the five hubs.

These are Taupo, Turangi,Ohakune, National Park andOwhango.

‘‘That’s the message we need to bepushing through. It’s not just infra-structure, it’s information as well.

‘‘As the numbers increase I’msure there’s scope for Taumarunuito be one of those hubs.’’

A shortage of toilets on the cross-ing is another issue Chapman saidneeded to be sorted.

Visitors will be able to use thetoilets at the hub before going on thecrossing.

being sought on the

Ministry of Education’s

proposal.

An enrolment zone for Wairakei Pri-mary School is in the works andfeedback on the proposal iswelcomed.

Principal Paula Farquhar said ina statement on the school’s websitethat the issue was numbers.

In 2017, there are 321 pupils in theschool roll – growing from 319 pupilsin 2016, 267 pupils in 2015, and 212pupils in 2012.

Farquhar said the school couldnot continue to grow and that theMinistry of Education wereimplementing an enrolment zone toprevent further increases to the sizeof the school roll.

‘‘The Board has taken a pre-

viously implemented school zoneand used it as a starting point for ourconsultation process. Together weaim to collect as much feedback onthe proposed school zone as poss-ible.’’

The zone encompasses suburbswest of the Waikato River likeNukuhau, Acacia Bay, Wairakei,Kinloch, and Te Pouwhakatutu.

According to the proposal, chil-dren living inside the zone would beaccepted into the school. Childrenoutside the zone will go on a ballot.

250Taupo Orienteer Club is hosting a wayfinding competition next weekend.

ROBERT STEVEN/FAIRFAX NZ

Orienteeringevent invitesROBERT STEVEN

It’s getting harder to get lost inTaupo, with bush-bashers’ favouritehaunts being transformed intolifestyle blocks.

But that won’t stop nearly 100orienteering enthusiasts from trav-ersing Whakaipo Bay during anannual challenge next weekend.

The Katoa Po orienteering eventwill draw nearly 20 teams fromorienteering clubs across thecountry.

Taupo Orienteering Club presi-dent Terry Brighouse said teamscompeting are given a map of thearea [Whakaipo Bay] which features11 checkpoints for orienteers to seekout and check off.

‘‘The first relay leg is for juniorsand starts as dusk falls. Thesucceeding relay legs get progress-ively more technical and longer, with the seventh leg being the mostdifficult in terms of map reading andnavigation,’’ he said.

The event used to take all night tofind all the checkpoints and com-plete the course – hence its nameKatoa Po, which is te Reo Maori for‘‘All Night’’, Brighouse said.

‘‘Over the years competitors havebecome more skilled at map readingand navigating by headlamps, so the

winning teams now finish around2am,’’ he said.

The sport was started by aSwedish major who wanted to makemap-reading lessons more interes-ting for his soliders, Brighouse said.

Technology had kept pace withorienteering too.

‘‘You now have a microchip tiedto your finger. You tap the control[flag] with it, and the microchiprecords the time you’ve got there,’’Brighouse said.

‘‘When you finish, you just punchit into a computer and all your timesare recorded.’’

Beginners to orienteering havethe chance to compete in a ‘‘mini-rogaine’’ game on Sunday March 12,too.

‘‘In normal orienteering, you’vegot to do a certain number of con-trols [checkpoint flags] in a certainorder. But in rogaine, there’s awhole of controls about and you’vegot to decide which ones you’regoing to go find in the set time,’’Brighouse said.

Taupō District Council @Taupo_DC

Our population is growing, we’re seeingmore visitors cominghere and the unemployment rate is dropping – that’s just someof the great news to come out of the December quarter TaupōDistrict EconomicMonitor report.Every three months Enterprise Great Lake Taupō

commissions a report that looks at the current economicsituation in our district and trends over the past year.he datacomes from a range of organisations such as Statistics NewZealand, other government agencies and the banking sector.Enterprise Great Lake Taupō chair Greg Stebbing said the

most recent report relected positively on the past year forour district.“We’ve had some noticeable gains in our population which

has grown by around 600 people the past year. Unsurprisingly,we’ve also seen growth in the number of new residentialbuildings and existing building alterations.”Greg said more visitors are coming here and people are also

spendingmore in our district’s stores.“We’ve seen a gain in the number of visitors arriving in the

Taupō District and they’re spending more than visitors have inthepast.heevenbetternews is that locals arealso following thistrend, which is always a positive economic indicator.”

With the extra spending, the report showed employmentaround the district had grown by 3.9 per cent, with theunemployment rate dropping from 4.3 per cent to 4 per cent.“his is all very positive for the Taupō District, and has led

our GDP to grow around 2.8 per cent,” Greg said. “Economicdevelopment is an important part of council’s strategy, so it’spleasing to see Taupō is keeping up with the rest of NewZealand, and seeing growth above the national average aswell.”To read the report inmore detail, visit greatlaketaupo.biz.

NZ’S NEXT SNOW HUBBy now you will have seen the newsof Ruapehu Alpine Lits’ (RAL) $100million dollar plans to put MtRuapehu on the world stage as thecountry’s ski region of choice. To dothis RAL is investing in state-of-the-art snow making equipment, providing a regular shuttle service tothe ski slopes, building newinfrastructure on the mountain, ofering night skiing andsnowboarding in Happy Valley, andopening two retail bases in Taupō.

his is great news for everyone in our district whether you’rea ski bunny or not. Not only will we seemore visitors staying inour hotels and motels, we’ll also see them spending in ourstores and making the most of the plethora of adventuretourism options we have on our doorstep. More peoplespending more money in what is traditionally our quieterseason is great for our district’s economic development.Council has a leadership role in facilitating the development

of the district’s economy. We aim to ensure the Taupō Districthas a competitive advantage when it comes to securing businessgrowth, attracting visitors, and building a skilled workforce.By welcoming new businesses and supporting existing ones,

we can provide employment opportunities that help enrichour community and grow our economy. It’s clear to Council there are overwhelming benets from

RAL’s investment in theTaupōDistrict, and has thrown supportbehind the move to make our district New Zealand’s premierski destination. By investing in the assets they have on themountain, RAL is helping to create jobs and stimulate ourlocal economy. All this great news comes as we celebrate the results of the

latest Taupō District Economic Monitor report. he quarterlyreport showed a signicant increase in new homes being builtin the three months to December 2016. It also showed morevisitors are coming here and are joining locals in spendingmore inour shops. It’s no surprise then that ourunemploymentrate is dropping and we’ve experienced 2.8 per cent economicgrowth in the last quarter, which is above the national average.I’m certain we can keep up the good work and will continue

to see more growth like this in the future. Council has manyway to support business, so get in touch with us if we can helpin any way.

IRONMAN is ticked off the bucket listSUPPLIED

Taupo’s own

Richard Malcolm

makes it across

the line.

STEPH RANGI

While the focus was on the profes-sional battle that decided titles forBraden Currie and JocelynMcCauley, there were specialmoments for the more than 1000who joined the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain IRONMAN New Zealandfamily in Taupo on the weekend.

The age group competitorsfrom 49 countries were seekingqualifying places for theIRONMAN World Championshipin Hawaii and mostly chasing per-sonal achievements.

They were led by the fastest ofthe age group competitors, Auck-land’s Dan Plews, the well-knownsports scientist and triathloncoach.

He was 10th fastest overall, winning the 35-39 years age groupin 8:54.09 for the 3.8km swim,180km bike and 42.2km marathonrun.

The fastest female age-grouperwas Emily Loughnan from West-ern Australia who was sixthfastest overall in 9:56:38, includinga course record for the 42.2kmmarathon run of 3:15:14 in the25-29 years age group.

Taupo school teacher, HarrietFiler, who has been a volunteer atthe event for many years, beforestepping across the line to becomea competitor, and realise herdream, finished in 13:24:38.

There were others chasing per-sonal accomplishment including

Michele Gunn, formerly fromWellington but now in Auckland.

The 25-year-old was involvedin the serious car crash 11 yearsago, which led to 20 surgeries anda terminal eye injury.

She has turned this around, gaining a degree in finance, coping with the personal trauma

of losing her mother six years agoand supporting her father who isfighting a long-term cancer battle.

Gunn was the recipient of theTony Jackson Scholarship, estab-lished to honour the iconic figureat IRONMAN New Zealand whocompleted the event 27 times in arow and motivated many to take

up the IRONMAN challengebefore he passed away.

She finished in 11:43:34 on oneof the most challenging of dayswith strong winds on the swimand bike to realise her dreams.

‘‘It was an amazing experi-ence,’’ Gunn said.

‘‘From the start, the swim was

really choppy and I struggled butyou know why you are doing it,it’s such a special thing and at nopoint do you consider hoppingout.’’

For 40 others it was the oppor-tunity to qualify for the sport’sHoly Grail of the IRONMANWorld Championship in Hawaii.

Groombridgeis not wastingany time

Taupo’s Brad Groombridge on the charge in three separate motorcycling codes. ANDY MCGECHAN

ANDY MCGECHAN

Bay of Plenty’s Brad Groombridgeis not wasting any time.

The Suzuki rider from Taupowill be an extremely busy managain this season, as he tacklesthree separate motorcycling codesand the pressure is on as he’sexpected to win, or at least dovery well, in all of them.

The 26-year-old, national MX1No.5 is already midway throughhis 2017 New Zealand MotocrossChampionships campaign, run-ning eighth overall in the premierMX1 class after two of fourrounds.

Groombridge is also thedefending national enduro cham-pion and he is currently a closesecond overall after two rounds ofthe 2017 New Zealand EnduroChampionships, with the latestround of that series held nearWhangamata just over a weekago.

But wait, there’s more.He is also the defending cham-

pion in the New Zealand Cross-country Championships and the2017 edition of that series kickedoff in Central Hawke’s Bay onSunday, with Groombridge againfeaturing prominently.

This first of four rounds wasbeing raced on a farmland coursenear Dannevirke and

Groombridge was quickly push-ing for the lead.

’’I had a terrible start, in about40th position after the gun wentoff. The bike started first kick, butI was just a bit slow to get going,’’he said.

’’I was into the lead after abouttwo laps, each of those laps onlytaking about 20 minutes. So itwasn’t long before the course gotquite rough with so much trafficgoing over the same route.’’

Groombridge caught andpassed early race leader SamGreenslade, from Coatesville, whothen passed Groombridge backwhen the Suzuki man came intothe pit zone to refuel.

Groombridge soon caught backup to KTM rider Greenslade andre-took the lead, extending thatwhen Greenslade then took hischance to pit for fuel.

The order remained the sameuntil Groombridge eventuallywon by nearly two minutes fromGreenslade, with Taupo’s NathanTesselaar finishing third.

The series next heads toMosgiel for round two on April 2.

Round three is set for Marlbor-ough on April 30 and the finalround is due in Cambridge onMay 13.

Points only for the best three offour rounds are counted, ensuringthe battle will go down to the wire.

Dramatic finish

‘a real battle’

in Ironman

Suzanne Stokes at home in Raumati. ADAM POULOPOULOS

ADAM POULOPOULOS

A woman at the centre of IronmanNew Zealand’s most dramatic fin-ish can’t see herself doing anotherone.

Suzanne Stokes was helpedover the finish line six secondsbefore the midnight finish cutoffat the multisport event in Taupoon Saturday.

The moment race commen-tator Mike Reilly, women’s cham-pion Jocelyn McCauley andrunner-up Laura Siddall helpedan exhausted Stokes cross the linewas captured on video andcirculated widely on social media.

Recovering at home in Rau-mati, on the Kapiti Coast north ofWellington, Stokes said it tookuntil after the drive back onSunday to comprehend the scaleof her achievement.

‘‘I was so focused on compet-ing. I didn’t have any tears untilMonday. It’s amazing. I’m stillquite shocked about it.’’

Although she was proud tocomplete her goal, she would notbe doing another one.

‘‘I’m never going to do it again. It’s too much training.’’

She had struggled to watch thevideo of her finish: ’’It’s a bit tooshocking to be honest.’’

She finished the 3.8 kilometreswim, 180km cycle and 42km run

in 16 hours, 59 minutes and 54seconds, the 1007th and final fin-isher in the field that started outwith 1270 athletes. It was her firstfull Ironman.

She could vividly recall therace’s final three minutes, par-ticularly the lights and crowd.

‘‘I didn’t know exactly howlong I had to go. I thought, ‘I don’tthink I can do that’.

‘‘The lights were amazing. They were so bright.’’

When Stokes started the raceby entering the water for theswim, her aim was just to makeall the race cutoffs, due to theblustery conditions that made therace even more difficult.

She was ahead of schedule onthe swim and bike, but with about12km of the run left, her backstarted to give way.

‘‘That was where it became areal battle,’’ she said.

‘‘I didn’t really think it wasinjured, but obviously it was veryweak ... the back had gone into acomplete spasm.’’

With 20min to go, she askedcoach Lynley Brown if officialswould pull her off the course.‘‘She said, ‘no, you’ve just got togo to the finish line’.’’

Stokes’ has previously com-peted in five triathlons and twohalf-Ironman events.

unique Lotus Evora

Sport 410 that

Esprit S1.

DOUG SAIL

Unique Lotus Evora Sport 410 honours iconic Esprit S1.

Lotus is paying homage to one ofits most famous cars - just don’texpect it to turn into a submarine.

The one-off car - based on theEvora Sport 410 that waslaunched in late 2016 - wasunveiled at the weekend and is atribute to the now 40-year-oldLotus Espirit S1. And if that namemeans nothing to you, then it isthe car made famous as being ableto turn into a submarine in the1977 James Bond movie, The SpyWho Loved Me.

To mark the 40-year milestone,Lotus’ in-house personalisationdepartment has crafted thespecial, one-off Evora Sport 410.

Lotus have combined the latestengineering with period detailswith the new supercar takingdesign cues from the iconicEsprit. The Evora Sport 410weighs just 1280 kg and will sprintfrom 0-60 mph (96kmh) in just 3.9secs thanks to its supercharged3.5-litre 6-cylinder engine thatproduces 410 hp at 7000 rpm and420 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm.

"So many of us recall theimpact of the Lotus Esprit when it

hit the big screen in The Spy WhoLoved Me, and we wanted tohonour that with a special EvoraSport 410," Lotus chief executive

Jean-Marc Gales said."It’s the perfect tribute to such

an influential Lotus, but a worldaway in terms of its abilities and

performance."Unique design touches in this

one-off car include a special,colour-coded bumper thatmodifies the car’s front end, whilethe one-piece carbon-fibre tailgateis part keyed white to give theillusion of a traditional liftback. In addition to a black coach line itsports a bespoke badge script onthe B pillar - in the style of theoriginal Esprit’s graphics.

Nods to the Lotus Esprit S1from The Spy Who Loved Mecontinue inside, with the insertpanels of the carbon-fibre sportsseats and door cards trimmed inthe heritage Tartan.

Isuzu sticks with bigger-is-better philosophyFacelifted D-Max has a new nose. But

the big change is under the bonnet,

with a cleaner and gruntier 3.0-litre

turbo-diesel.

D-Max cleans up butkeeps big-capacityengine, reports DavidLinklater.

Cubes still count amongtraditional one-tonne pickupbuyers. At least according toIsuzu New Zealand, withcompany bosses stoked they’vebeen able to hold onto a 3.0-litreturbo-diesel as the D-Max utemoves to Euro 5 emissionsspecification.

A revamped version of the3.0-litre that produces an extra50Nm of torque (up from 380Nm/2800rpm to 430Nm/2200rpm) is themost significant upgrade to the2017-model D-Max, which isknown as the RT87 in company-code. Isuzu calls it a "big rollingchange". The old five-speedgearboxes have also been droppedin favour of new six-speed manualand automatic transmissions.

The large-capacity enginewasn’t a given. The D-Max isavailable in a variety of enginesizes in different markets, sothere was a possibility the newmodel would have to downsize inorder to clean up.

"The Japanese have managedto engineer this powerplant topass Euro 5, which is quite an

undertaking," says Isuzu Utes NZgeneral manager MurrayGreenhalgh. "But there arecertain things that our marketprefers and one of those is the3.0-litre engine. We’re verypleased."

Changes to the engine aresubstantial: new piston design, revised turbocharger, and newfuel pump and injection systems.

Key to the cleaner emissionsare a new exhaust gasrecirculation (EGR) system anddiesel particulate diffuser (DPD).

The surprise-and-delightexpressed by the local Isuzupeople about the new truck isgenuine.

"Being a Japanese company,

Isuzu is focused on detailimprovements," says Greenhalgh."They do many small, rollingchanges to vehicles duringproduction. Some of them weknow about and some of them wedon’t, because we’re a very smallmarket in the world. We literallyhave vehicles turning up and wesay ’oh, we didn’t know we weregetting that’. It’s how thingswork."

The RT87 isn’t here yet. It’s justbeen launched in Australia andNZ is next in line, with the firstvehicles set to arrive in March.

Here’s what Isuzu NZ isexpecting: all models have gainedthe new powertrain and a hilldescent control system. Styling

changes are minor but include anew grille across the range. TheLS and LS-T get new headlights,an ’Isuzu’ decal for the tailgateand ’shark fin’ roof antenna. TheLS-T upsizes from 17-inch wheelsto new-design 18in rims.

Inside, there are newinstruments and audio systems, depending on model - althoughthe new information andentertainment screen now housesa reversing camera across therange. The LS also now featuressatellite navigation as standard. The double-cab LS and LS-Tversions also get a USB port forrear-seat passengers.

The new D-Max range starts at$39,890 for the LX 2WD and topsout at $61,990 for the LS-Terrain4WD automatic. There are 13variants.

The Kiwi Isuzu people aren’ttoo sure how the MU-X SUV willevolve. The current shipment hasthe previous-generation styling,

but does carry the new power-train in order to meet Euro 5.

"That’s all we know [about MU-X] at this stage," says Greenhalgh."We’re expecting rolling changes, but we don’t know how far awaythey are."

Isuzu Utes was on a roll in 2016,with growth of 39 per cent.Greenhalgh’s stated aim is to riseto number three in the 4WDmarket, reflecting its bias towardsbusiness and rural buyers. To dothat, the brand would have topush past Holden’s sister utemodel, the Colorado.

"It was interesting year," saysGreenhalgh. "We finished [2016]number four in 4WD and for onemonth we touched number three. That was a pleasant surprise; wehadn’t expected to get so muchtraction in that timeframe."

Looking further ahead,Greenhalgh says he still knowslittle about the forthcoming tieupbetween Isuzu and Mazda fortheir next-generation utes. InJuly, Mazda announced that itsBT-50 replacement would bebased on an Isuzu platform, moving away from its currentagreement with Ford. It’sunderstood that the new vehiclewill be largely an Isuzu effort, with Mazda potentially assistingin some development work andalmost certainly styling its ownvesion.

Latest Audi S4 has more zip

S4 Avant: Audi people do love their high-performance wagons.

Want a new-generation RS4? Sorry, you’ll haveto wait another two years. Until then, the newS4 is the fastest of the range. Damien O’Carrollreports.

To say that the S4 has been asuccessful model for Audi in NewZealand would be something of anunderstatement. More than 1400S4s (including the related S5coupe, cabrio and Sportbackmodels) have been sold locallysince 2002.

This makes it a prettyimportant model, particularlynow that a new RS4 is not due foranother few years. The S4 istherefore the biggest, baddest A4variant. For now.

But here’s the interestingwrinkle in the S4 story: this timearound it has an all-new 3-litre V6turbo engine (as opposed to asupercharged V6 that the last S4had) with more power and torquethan the old car, meaning it willwhip from a standing start to thelegal speed limit in a fairly swift4.7 seconds. That’s 0.3 secondsfaster than the old car, whichhappens to be the exact same timeas the last RS4.

Like any Audi that starts withan "S", the S4 isn’t exactly entrylevel and comes fully-loaded with

goodies. The sedan version startsthe range at $116,400, while theever-popular Avant (wagon innon-Audi-speak) lands at $119,900.

The all-new 3-litre petrol V6turbo produces 260kW of powerand 500Nm of torque (up 15kWand 60Nm over the old car) and ishooked up to an eight-speedtransmission driving all fourwheels via Audi’s quattro AWDsystem.

Weighing 14kg less than theprevious supercharged V6, theengine is laid out in a ’hot-V’configuration, meaning that theturbo is located in the middle ofthe cylinder banks for bettercontrol over heat loss, betterturbo response and betterpackaging.

Along with the 4.7 second0-100kmh time, Audi also claimsCombined fuel consumption of 7.4litres per 100km for the S4.

The quattro AWD systempacks a purely mechanical centredifferential and is capable ofredistributing up to 70 per cent oftorque to the front wheels and 85

per cent to the rear as needed, with the standard distribution of40/60 front to rear.

Like all S cars, the S4 is packedfull of standard equipment withboth the sedan and Avant comingstandard with LED headlights,tail-lights and daytime runninglights, 19-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, S sports seats, triple zone climate control, Audi’sbrilliant Virtual Cockpit 12-inchscreen that replaces traditionalinstruments, a head-up display, adaptive damping control, privacy glass, adaptive cruisecontrol, lane assist/side assist, park assist, front and rear

parking sensors, a 360-degreereversing camera, rear crosstraffic alert and an electrictailgate on the Avant.

The new turbo engine is aseriously smooth and refinedunit, but superbly powerful withit. The torque is instantlyaccessible virtually everywherein the rev range and it belts out ofcorners like a thing possessed.

The S4 feels utterly plantedand unassailably confident on anyroad surface, simply gripping theroad like a scared baby monkeyriding pig and getting on with thebusiness of Going Very FastIndeed.

The interior is of a typicallyAudi high standard of fit andfinish, as well as beingfantastically comfortable with it.High speed cruising in absolutecomfort is clearly the S4’s strongpoint, and we have to say it does itexceptionally well.

However, there is often a ’but’and here it is - like a lot of Audisthere is simply no real connectionto the driver. The steering isdistant and uncommunicative, and while inputs are swiftlytranslated into movement, thereis little in the way of feedback. You may as well be playing avideo game.

However, the S4 is everythingan S car should be - very fast, verypolished, beautifully finished, highly equipped and boastingfantastic quattro-assistedhandling.

As a high-performance luxurysedan, the S4 is a hard package togo past. It is a stunningly wellmade car with a powerful, refinedengine and exceptional handling, but as a true enthusiast’s car, itjust leaves you a bit cold.

It may well be the perfectperformance sedan in a coldlytechnical sense. But a littleimperfection - a little mongrel - isusually more fun.

A sequel for Trainspotters only

Renton and Sickboy - Ewan McGregor and Jonny Lee Miller - reunite for T2: Trainspotting.

Review

T2: Trainspotting (R16)Directed byDanny BoyleStarring EwanMcGregor, RobertCarlyle, Jonny LeeMiller, EwenBremner117mins★★★

A heavyreliance onflashback willentrance fansof the original, but excludenewcomers.

Twenty-one years have elapsedsince the first Trainspottingmovie left its trail of ‘‘ChooseLife’’ posters across studentbedroom walls.

Time enough for Britain toreject one Conservativegovernment and come full circleback to another.

But the political energy of theoriginal movie is absent from thesequel, T2: Trainspotting: this isno longer a film about angrynihilistic heroin addicts, butabout middle-aged losers.

Mark Renton (EwanMcGregor) is back in Edinburgh, two decades after cheating hisfriends Begbie, Sickboy and Spud(Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Millerand Ewen Bremner) of their shareof the spoils of a drug deal.

At first glance, he’s done thebest of the quartet: Begbie is backin prison, Spud back on heroinand Sickboy is fantasising aboutowning a brothel, while running adeserted pub and snortingmountains of coke.

Slowly, their lives re-entwine.

A plot which diverts substantiallyfrom its source – Irvine Welsh’sfollow-up novel Porno – isthreadbare in parts, but Boyle’senergetic direction, beautiful setdesign and some engagingvignettes – notably an uproariousheist mounted by Renton andSickboy upon the unsuspectingpunters in a loyalist pub – holdthe attention.

Boyle and screenwriter John

Hodge chose to keep the once-iconic, now much copied ‘‘chooselife’’ speech, but this time it’s lessviciously political and much morepersonal, meandering off intoRenton’s own individual lamenton life.

Boyle says the film has hope, and it does, surprisingly, forSpud, but really it’s about the lossof hope, the disappointment ofrealising it’s too late in life to fulfil

your potential.McGregor, his feud with Boyle

now over, has his star power, butactually the highlights are aremarkable turn from Miller, angry, frustrated and angular, and Bremner, who uses all hisphysical traits to deliver aperformance both funny andpoignant.

A heavy reliance on flashbackwill entrance fans of the original,

but exclude newcomers; similarlythe soundtrack offers hints of thefirst time, before closing with arendition of the signature piece,Iggy Pop’s Lust for Life.

Boyle wanted to dodge thecurse of the sequel. He’s managedthat – but the price is a movie thatwill be loved by those who lovedthe original, but which may beirrelevant to those too young tocare. - Steve Kilgallon.

My life as acredit unicorn

MONEY MATTERS

I am a unicorn.That’s a sentence I never

thought I would begin a moneycolumn with.

Unicorn is a term used in thecredit scoring industry for peoplewith credit scores over 900.

They are so rare they arepractically mythical. At least thatis what I had been told.

But overnight I became one, making me wonder whethercredit unicorns really are thatrare, or whether there has beensomething deeply flawed aboutthe credit rating system.

Every adult has a credit scorebetween zero and 1000, with zerobeing unspeakably terrible, and1000 representing a god of money.

They are calculated by the bigcredit reporting bureaus, including Veda and Dun &Bradstreet.

They compile reports usinginformation passed to them byour banks, our insurers and awhole heap of other businesses.

Banks, finance companies, utility companies and landlords

check people’s credit scoresdeciding whether to make them aloan, get a mobile phone contract,or rent a house.

Unless you live in a cavewithout a phone, electricity, orplumbing, you have a credit file, and a credit score.

If you don’t know what yourscore is, check it for free withCreditSimple.co.nz, an onlineservice run by Dun & Bradstreet.

When Credit Simple launchedlast year it was a watershedmoment.

Most people in this countrydon’t know their credit scores, which is a result of how hard itused to be to get your credit reportand score. Unless you paid, thebureaus made you wait ages.

The day Credit Simplelaunched, I checked my score. Itwas mid-700s, which wasdisappointingly average.

Then, last week, I got an emailfrom Credit Simple suggesting Icheck again as ASB and Westpachad started providing ‘‘positive’’information to it.

Credit reporting used to be all

negative. Fail to pay a credit cardbill on time, and the fact appearedas a dark stain on your creditreport.

By contrast, positive reportinginvolves banks and othercompanies telling the creditbureaus when you makepayments on time.

Apparently, adding positiveinformation to my credit reportcaused my score to jump by astaggering 200 points.

I didn’t feel pride, even thoughCredit Simple tells you how yourank against the other residentsof your street, and I was numberone in my gratifyingly long road. Ifelt anger.

Credit scores are supposed toshow how credit-worthy a person

is. They matter. They can be thedifference between getting a homeloan, or not, or getting the nodfrom a letting agency, or beingtold to take a hike. It turns out theold system was scoring meinaccurately.

The same will be true of others, and still will be for many, as ANZand BNZ haven’t yet embracedpositive credit reporting likeKiwibank, ASB and ANZ.

Some of ANZ and BNZ’scustomers will be undiscoveredunicorns like me. Perhapsunicorns aren’t such rare beastsas we thought.

After-school clubs can inspire children

After-school activities like learning the guitar let children discover more of the

world. 123RF

Extra-curricular activities give kids the chanceto succeed at something, says Erin Reilly.

Backyard banter

Neighbourly is a NZ-owned social media site creating easy ways for neighbours to talk and connect. Join us at neighbourly.co.nz or download our new iPhone and Android apps.

When I asked my husband whatextra-curricular activities he didas a child, he listed off the usualsuspects like rugby, football, cricket, piano … ‘‘Oh, and quizclub. We had buzzers andeverything.’’

Some people think extra-curricular activities areunnecessary because life is aboutparticipation not winning. Somethink that even if their kidswanted to play rugby, there’s justnot enough time after school to fitin more activities, while otherswould rather their child justfocuses on their grades.

But when I look back at theafter-school activities I did as akid, I don’t wish my life had beenquieter or less competitive; infact, they made me who I amtoday.

It’s not easy when homeworkand other after-school activitiescompete for the limited timebetween the final school bell andbedtime. But frankly, there’s

more to life than studying. Schoolcan become insular, especially ifit’s small. Not all kids areacademic either, and the ones thatare need a break sometimes.After-school activities like sportand music let them discover moreof the world and meet new peopleoutside the four walls of theclassroom.

Extra-curricular activitieshelp hone your kids’ strengthstoo. Enrol them in activities thatthey already like and are good atlike; they’ll love succeeding atsomething that doesn’t just focus

on As, Bs and Cs.On the flipside, though, after-

school activities could unearth ahidden talent in your child thatneither of you knew about. Letyour kids choose new activitiesevery term, and see if there’ssomething they naturallygravitate towards. You neverknow; the next Maria Tutaia or

Rafael Nadal could be sittingaround your dinner table.

Don’t feel pressured to fillevery evening with extra-curricular activities though. Mybrother and I grew up on a farmthat was miles away fromanywhere, but as we got older ourparents were committed tomaking our interests happen

every week (netball and soccer inwinter, swimming in summer),despite the long drive. Findsomething that makes your kidshappy and works for your family, not someone else’s.

Of course, if parents work full-time or are struggling financially,it can be hard to make extra-curricular activities happen. Butthat’s where a well-connectedcommunity can help. Keep an eyeout on Neighbourly for after-school activities like Guides andScouts. If your neighbour’s childis in the same rugby team asyours, ask them about potentialafter-school care until you gethome from work.

If you spend your afternoons athome and have a skill to offer thekids in your neighbourhood likecooking or speaking French, offerfree or affordable services on yourNeighbourly page. If your child isgenuinely talented at surfing butyou can’t afford the gear, approach a local business forsponsorship.

Where there’s a will, there’salways a way. And extra-curricular activities are worth it.

Gardening

NET YOUR APPLE TREES TO

SAVE THE FRUITIf you have a good crop of applesripening, the birds will showmore than just a passing interest.Various bird-scaring devicespromise protection but all fail todeliver, in my experience. Atamed falcon would do the job, I’msure, but those are hard to comeby. I’m relying on early pickingand nets. If you rely on the goodnature of the birds to leave youthe best of your apples, you’lllearn a lot about nature thisautumn and if you’ve not yet seenwhat a hungry bird will do to anapple, in this case a ripe‘Fairbelle’, take a good long lookat this photo, then get netting!

FIND AND GROW RED-

FLOWERING OR RED-SEEDED

BROAD BEANSCheck out the broad beans of yourfriends and neighbours – theymay have something specialgrowing right under your nose. The run-of-the-mill broad bean isan attractive enough plant, it’strue, but there are variations onthat theme that would delight youif you saw them. The flowerspictured are those of the red-flowered broad bean and provideextra interest at this stage of theirdevelopment. The red-seededbroad bean variety, on the otherhand, don’t shine until their seedsare well set, at which time theyare spectacular, sitting inside oftheir ordinary-looking pods, allplump and rosy. Ask around – youmight just get lucky and find abroad bean fan who has one orother of these nice variationsgrowing in their garden. You canfind red-seeded broad beans forsale online from Country TradingCo (countrytrading.co.nz) inNelson.

PICK STINGING NETTLES FOR

SOUPIf you haven’t tried stinging

nettle soup, you must – just don’ttaste test the leaves before youcook them or you’ll end up with abotoxy smile that will amuse your

friends but you won’t enjoy onebit. Stinging nettle loses its stingas soon as it meets boiling water,so cook your soup beforesampling. Include othervegetables in the mix and yoursoup will taste familiar but willhave the extra nutrients thatnettle brings, in part because ofits wild, undomesticated state. Ifyou don’t have any, nettles arecommonly found growing in dry, hot, nitrogen-rich places, such asbeside woolsheds or under theskirts of a hedge where animalsmay have camped. My nettlesgrow in a bathtub, to keep themcontained, but there are also somegrowing in the wilds of my widerforest garden.Occasionally I

stumble across them. The pain isfleeting, if four hours can beconsidered fleeting!

Before you harvest nettles, check the plant carefully as it maybe hosting caterpillars or cocoonsof our native admiral butterflies. It’s well worth leaving those aloneso they can become the beautifuladults that add delight to ourgardens as they fly about insearch of stinging nettle. Toharvest, handle confidently –grasping the nettle as though youhave no fear of it and it will beyours. Or wear gloves. Take thewhole stem, but strip the leavesoff first for soup or tea making. Bythe way, there are severalvarieties of stinging nettle andour native ongaonga (Urticaferox) is not one to be meddledwith. Ongaonga grows on theedges of native forest and is hugeby comparison with commonurtica. I don’t recommend it forsoup-making (or anything elsereally) except admiring from asafe distance!

MAKE SPACE FOR THE UGLY

FRUITFruits that don’t appeal to the

gardener’s eye often get removedand replaced by prettier things. The hard, knobbly fruit above is ajaponica apple (Chaenomelesjaponica) and follows beautiful

pink flowers. The fruit, plainthough it is, serves as the base forvery nice jams and desserts, whencombined with sweeter fruits, such as conventional apples. Thislovely but thorny plant is easy togrow. It should be kept away frompaths to avoid becoming ascratch-hazard. The onlymaintenance it requires is a littlejudicious pruning. It is notbothered by birds or insects and isrobust and healthy. The hard fruitcan stay suspended from itsbranches throughout winter andlooks delightful when every otherfruit has fallen from its stalk.

Downstairs is a surprise with not only another double bedroom and bathroom but

also a living area with kitchenette. Doors open to a private, restful part of the garden

designed to sit out of the direct sun and enjoy entertaining with friends or family.

Wait there’s more…loads more! A roomy flat, open plan living with own garden, one

double and a single bedroom. Which offers loads of options for extended family, air bnb

or rental to pay off your mortgage quickly. Add to this picture a brilliant three car width

garage, carport and loads of parking and storage for bikes and kayaks.

Auction - Sunday 23 April 2017 at 3.00pm on site (unless sold prior)

Relaxed Vibe 1/72 Mere RoadWith a gin in hand, sitting on the deck with friends you all enjoy the afternoon sun and

lake views. You’ll hear the kids chatting as they stroll back from a dip in the lake which

is just minutes away.

Cottage charm with timber features and surprisingly larger than you might expect

with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, the floor plan allows everyone to enjoy a

little space. Unexpected lake views from the open plan living area and two bedrooms,

while the kitchen and third bedroom enjoy the central garden.

This is a home that invites you to relax and feel like you are on holiday, whether you are

permanent or having time out. Nestled in the bird area this is definitely one of Taupo’s

favourite spots, so snap it up before someone else does!

Problems spotted inHealthy Rivers planELTON RIKIHANA SMALLMAN

Waikato River at the Mercer Bridge.

A council investigation into theproposed Healthy Rivers planhas revealed a swathe ofinconsistencies that make thepolicy hard to implement.

Waikato Regional Councilstaff prepared a submission tothe Healthy Rivers/Wai Ora:Proposed Waikato RegionalPlan Change 1 which wasdelivered to a meeting of coun-cillors on Monday.

In it, they highlight a raft ofpoints described as inflexible, restricting farming practice, areconfusing, unfair and‘‘practicably unenforceable’’.

While poring over the detailsin a series of three workshopsand in the development of animplementation plan, councildiscovered severalinconsistencies and concerns.

One problem is the Overseernutrient modelling tool whichcalculates the amount of nitro-gen leached on each farm.

It’s hugely problematic, saidCouncillor Stuart Husband, is 30percent ‘‘out of whack’’ and itdoesn’t work.

‘‘Our dairy farming careersare finished the day this plancomes in,’’ Husband said.

That claim was rebutted byCouncillor Stu Kneebone. BothKneebone and Husband aredairy farmers.

Council’s submissionsupports the overall direction ofthe Healthy Rivers plan and the

plan change is the ‘‘first crucialstep’’ on an 80-year journey.

Water quality has continuedto decline despite years of workby the community and publicfeedback shows water quality isthe number one priority.

‘‘We need to do somethingdifferently,’’ the submissionsaid.

Council voted 7 to 4 toendorse the submission whichwill be lodged before the duedate.

Crs Fred Lichtwark, TipaMahuta, Stu Kneebone, BobSimcock, Dal Minogue, AlanLivingston and Kataraina

Hodge voted for the recommen-dation.

Crs Kathy White, Stu Hus-band, Russ Rimmington andJane Hennebry were opposed.

Cr Jennie Hayman abstainedwhile Cr Hugh Vercoe left themeeting early on another mat-ter.

By midday on Monday, coun-cil had received 243 submissionsto the plan change, which closedon Wednesday, March 8 at 5pm.

A request for extension to thetime frame was knocked backby the Healthy Rivers Wai OraCommittee on Friday.
