Activity for Talent Contest: Music Selection Why do you want to be Czech Days Queen? “I have attended Czech Days for as long as I can remember. It would be an honor to have the opportunity to be an ambassador of this great celebra- tion and all it represents. My Czech Heritage is very important to me and becoming queen would allow me to be a role model for other young women and others who want to become passionate about their heritage as well.” What does Czech Days mean to you? “Czech Days is a time when people from the region gather to celebrate their Czech Heritage. People welcome Czech customs passed down through generations and continue to pass on traditions to future generations.” TOASTMASTER 1294 Yankton Toastmasters Club 1294 met at the Fryn' Pan Restaurant on Saturday May 22, 2010. Club President Jeremy Skrenes called the meeting to order and asked Harry Voelzke to give the invocation and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Skrenes served as Toastmaster of the Day and called on master evalu- ator John Swensen to introduce other members with duties; Mike Arens as speech evaluator, Kevin Buhl as ah counter, and Carol Hale as grammarian. Joy Winther gave a presentation on parliamentary pro- cedure from the “Abstracts Concept” Manual of Toastmasters International. Winther began the presentation with an overview of the types and purposes of motions (at a meeting) and then she described the proper procedures to present and dispose of a motion. The pres- entation included handouts and role playing by several members on pre- senting, discussing, and voting on a motion. There was no table topic session at the meeting due to the length of Winther's presentation. John Swensen led the evaluation portion of the meeting and asked Mike Arens to evaluate Joy Winther and then gave a brief evaluation of the entire meeting. Jeremy Skrenes adjourned the meeting. Yankton Toastmasters Club 1294 meets each Saturday from 7:30- 8:40 AM at the Fryn' Pan Restaurant and guests are always welcome to attend a meeting. ASHH TOASTMASTERS Kary Beltz led the invocation at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital Toastmasters June 3 meeting held at noon in the Benedictine Center. Beltz prayed that she would slow down and enjoy the life around her. She also counted the votes. Beltz was introduced by the Toastmaster of the Day, Muriel Stach. Table Topics Master was Jane Miller. She asked questions about “June” weddings and traditions. She questioned Beltz about chang- ing parts of her wedding if she could do it over. Miller asked Greg Stach about any wedding advice he received. Miller then solicited Gale Vogt's answer to the most unusual wedding he has attended. The 3- way tie for Best Respondent went to Stach, Beltz and Vogt. Mindy Schweitzer was the main speaker. Her goals were to give a 5 to 7 minute researched speech that would give data to back up her opin- ions and point of view. Schweitzer talked about kidney cancer, “The 'C' Word”, relating details of her father's illness and road to recovery. She was awarded the Best Speaker tro- phy. The Best Evaluator's award went to Vogt who gave helpful hints to Schweitzer. Vogt suggested that Schweitzer not use “excuse me” during her speeches and applauded her for the good statistics she gave about kidney cancer and its symp- toms. Eileen O'Connor was the General Evaluator and the Sergeant at Arms. O'Connor had the room prepared and her team ready. Tim Bohn timed the speakers. Eric Taylor tracked the unneeded usage of fillers, like 'so'. Sheryl Schwartz noted the special words and phras- es that speakers used, especially “viva”, her word of the day. President Bohn discussed the installation of new officers at a party in July at his home. He reviewed the cooking contest for that party and next week's schedule before adjourning the meeting. CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAS A 6:00 p.m. potluck was enjoyed by all for the May meeting of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas- Court Willard #967. In honor of the “Year of the Priests” all local clergy were invited to join the court. The monthly meeting was opened by Regent Velma Kuchta. She welcomed everyone including guests and new members. Edna Dendinger and Evelyn Cimpl intro- duced their guests. Regent Kuchta offered our most sincerest thanks and appreciation for all that our cler- gy do throughout the days, weeks and years. Their tireless devotion is all very much appreciated. The Year for Priests is meant to benefit our priests, but it is also meant to bene- fit all of us. Our priests give their lives for us. Regent Kuchta also offered our blessings and prayers for Deacon Paul King as he will be ordained soon. She also thanked Msgr. Hermann for being such a faithful chaplain to our Court and to Fr. Bob for his ministry of being our State Chaplain. The treasurer’s report was given by Treasurer Patti Paul. The report was approved and seconded. Correspondence: Recording Secretary Cyndi Hunhoff read the cards and letters that had been received. Financial Report: Financial Secretary Cheryl Hovorka asked that dues be paid. Old Business: Deacon Paul thanked the court for the gift of money for his vestments; Mary Althoff informed us about the 90+ Party held at Majestic Bluffs; Leah Smith thanked everyone that had helped serve the banquet. New Business: Mass on Saturday, July 10, 2010, 9:00 a.m. - with Bishop Swain at the House of Mary Shrine. Court Willard has been invited to make and serve brunch. Cheryl Lemon asked for volunteers to help with the placement of flags for Memorial Day. Meet at the ceme- tery on May 27, Thursday, at 5:30 p.m. July 9, 2010 - Pillow Cleaning. Rose Hauger of the nominating committee presented the court with the list of nominees for the upcom- ing election. They are as follows: Regent-Janice Cass, Vice Regent- Bev Schmidt, Financial Secretary- Kerri Konechne, Treasurer-Mary Johnson, Recording Secretary-Mary Althoff. Nominations were also open to the court. No other nominations were made. The motion was made and approved for each office. Regent Velma Kuchta thanked the May Committee and adjourned the meeting. Father Bob lead the court in the May Crowning of Mary in the church. The next meeting will be on June 17 at Sacred Heart. Our new officers will be installed at this meeting. Activities Participated in High School: Football Cheerleader for three years, Yearbook Staff and Prom Committee Honors Earned: Lewis and Clark Reading Award, Czech Stamp Cancellation Contest, American Legion Citizenship Award, Lettered in cheerleading all three years, All Star Awards in Softball for three years and Czech Days Princess in 2000. INTERESTING FACTS: Hobbies, Clubs, School Activities, Community Activities or Achievements: I have volunteered at the Good Samaritan Center; helped with the Bon Homme Cheerleading Camp and the Dance Camp for grade school girls for three years; Beseda Dancer since I was 5 years old; donated food for our local Food Pantry numerous times; attend St. Wenceslaus Church and religious education program, promoted Czech Days in Yankton, Pierre, and Lakeport Church, enjoy baking and helping my mom make Kolaches and dumplings for Czech Days and family gatherings. Why do you want to be Czech Days Queen? “My running for Czech Days Queen is a way of expressing my love for our com- munity and heritage. Through my parents and grandparents, I have learned the importance of our Czech History. Even as a young girl, I dreamed of being Czech Days Queen. I have never missed a Czech Days celebration, it is very important to me. When I repre- sented our town as Princess at age 7, I felt truly honored and would love to continue this as a young woman, proud of my heritage.” What does Czech Days mean to you? “Czech Days means so many things. The first thing that comes to mind is excitement. The gather- ing of friends and family. Dressing up in my Kroj. Dancing in the Sokol Park. The sound of Czech music playing. Walking into Beseda Hall and smelling the sauerkraut, and eyeing the kolach- es. Seeing people so happy and smiling, and enjoying one another. It is all such a delight, it is quite possibly the best time of the year.” Three area young ladies are competing for Czech Days Queen during the 62nd annual celebration on June 17-19 in Tabor. Areas of competition include a community vote, talent, costume, and personal interviews. The contestants will have their costumes judged at 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 18, and will perform their talent on the Sokol Park stage later on that day at 7 p.m. GABRIELLE KACENA GINGER MARTIN SHANNON SOUHRADA GINGER ISABELLA MARTIN School: Attending Mitchell High School Parents: Alex and the late Mary Martin of Mitchell. Further Education: Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell Ambitions and Future Plans: Pursue a Career in secondary education majoring in mathemat- ics with a coaching minor. Activities Participated in High School: Oral Interp, FCCLA, Track, CYO, and 4-H Club Honors Earned: 4-H Awards. INTERESTING FACTS: Hobbies, Clubs, School Activities, Community Activities or Achievements: Landscape pho- tography, photos of concerts and people. I like to read poetry about the countries of Europe. Activity for Talent Contest: Oral Interp Why do you want to be Czech Days Queen? “I would like to be Czech Days Queen to learn about Czech Heritage and to have a Czech experience with people for Czech Days. I am running for Czech Days Queen for my family. Czech Days helps to make small towns keep the towns histories alive, like the town of Tabor. That is why this is one of the biggest things for South Dakota for tourist attractions from other cities. The kolaches made by the Czechs are one of their favorite foods and we enjoy eating them with our families on Czech Days.” What does Czech Days mean to you? “The feelings I have for Czech Days are fun and exciting. It is good to have the traditions by the Czechs. The Beseda Hall hosts all the families from the near towns when they visit Tabor. The people can learn from their heritage by enjoying the company of families and friends. Czech Days is to have fun and to enjoy the festival for the Czechs. It is about the community of the town and how the community keeps the town alive for letting people come to Czech Days. The people that come can honor their ancestors that came from Europe. I would be happy to rep- resent Tabor as Czech Days Queen and learn from all other queens from past Czech Days. If I get the experience, it will be great for me because I will be representing all of the town of Tabor and what Czech Days stands for, for me and the people of the town.” The Rivercity Harmony Sweet Adelines (S.A.) motored to Winnipeg, Manitoba aboard Kelly’s Koaches to compete in the international CAN-AM Region 6 2010 S.A. Convention and Competition. This region includes Minnesota, Northern Iowa, Eastern South Dakota, North Dakota and Southern Manitoba. Of this area about 650 S.A. attended this convention. On Friday, May 21, we all attended a learning session. S.A. is always teaching and helping ladies to sing even better. This ses- sion was on movement and body strength helping to project better sound. It was much enjoyed by everyone. Friday evening everyone enjoyed a super quartet competition with outstanding singing and costumes. On Saturday morning the Yankton Chorus under the direction of their new well known and respected director, Ethel Cooper, had a warm up for the afternoon competition. In stage makeup and shimmery costumes they competed with the under 30 Class A group. Followed by Class AA of 30 to 60 members finishing off with the City of Lakes Chorus, Minn. with over 70 members - our ladies were most happy with many improved scores! The ladies are very happy to welcome their great new director Ethel Cooper and are looking forward to a busy summer and fall of happy music. Visit with any of the ladies to find out more about upcoming opportunities to hear them sing. SAFETY POSTER WINNER SUBMITTED PHOTO U.C.T. Safety Poster Going To Supreme U.C.T Convention. Dakota McCloud’s Safety Poster placed 1st in his division at a local meet- ing and at the State Convention. It will be judged July 7-12 at UCT Supreme Session in Indianappolis, Ind. KIDS AGAINST HUNGER SUBMITTED PHOTO First United Methodist Church Senior High Youth Group in Yankton held a fund raiser for “Kids Against Hunger,” a nonprofit group from Sioux Falls. If they raised $500.00, Rev. Dean Trapp, an avid Minnesota Vikings Fan, would wear a Green Bay Packers Jersey and tie during Sunday Services which he did on June 6, 2010. Casey Johnson agreed to wear a Minnesota Vikings shirt. The Youth Group raised $753.00 which is enough money to feed over 3,000 people. Why do you want to be CzechDays Queen? “I would like to beCzech Days Queen to learn aboutCzech Heritage and to have aCzech experience with people forCzech Days. I am running forCzech Days Queen for my family.Czech Days helps to make smalltowns keep the towns historiesalive, like the town of Tabor. Thatis why this is one of the biggestthings for South Dakota fortourist attractions from othercities. The kolaches made by theCzechs are one of their favoritefoods and we enjoy eating themwith our families on Czech Days.”

What does Czech Days mean

to you? “The feelings I have forCzech Days are fun and exciting.It is good to have the traditionsby the Czechs. The Beseda Hallhosts all the families from thenear towns when they visitTabor. The people can learn fromtheir heritage by enjoying thecompany of families and friends.Czech Days is to have fun and toenjoy the festival for the Czechs.It is about the community of thetown and how the communitykeeps the town alive for lettingpeople come to Czech Days. Thepeople that come can honortheir ancestors that came fromEurope. I would be happy to rep-resent Tabor as Czech DaysQueen and learn from all otherqueens from past Czech Days. If Iget the experience, it will begreat for me because I will berepresenting all of the town ofTabor and what Czech Daysstands for, for me and the peopleof the town.”

The Rivercity Harmony Sweet Adelines(S.A.) motored to Winnipeg, Manitobaaboard Kelly’s Koaches to compete in theinternational CAN-AM Region 6 2010 S.A.Convention and Competition.

This region includes Minnesota, NorthernIowa, Eastern South Dakota, North Dakotaand Southern Manitoba. Of this area about650 S.A. attended this convention.

On Friday, May 21, we all attended alearning session. S.A. is always teaching andhelping ladies to sing even better. This ses-

sion was on movement and body strengthhelping to project better sound. It was muchenjoyed by everyone.

Friday evening everyone enjoyed a superquartet competition with outstanding singingand costumes.

On Saturday morning the Yankton Chorusunder the direction of their new well knownand respected director, Ethel Cooper, had awarm up for the afternoon competition.

In stage makeup and shimmery costumesthey competed with the under 30 Class A

group. Followed by Class AA of 30 to 60members finishing off with the City of LakesChorus, Minn. with over 70 members - ourladies were most happy with many improvedscores!

The ladies are very happy to welcometheir great new director Ethel Cooper andare looking forward to a busy summer andfall of happy music.
