Page 245, Exercise 13
Using relative pronouns where, that or which
![Page 2: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
When you use where as a relative pronoun, it’s because the embedded
sentence has a preposition.
If the embedded sentence has no preposition, use relative pronouns
that or which.
![Page 3: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
#1. The store _________ I bought my computer is
having a sale now.
![Page 4: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Main Sentence:The store is having a sale now.
Embedded Sentence:I bought my computer at the store.
![Page 5: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
There is a preposition in the embedded sentence, so we use
the relative pronoun where:
1. The store where I bought my computer is
having a sale now.
![Page 6: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
#2. Do you book mark the Websites ________ you
visit often?
![Page 7: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Main Sentence:Do you mark the Web sites?
Embedded Sentence:You visit the Web sites often.
![Page 8: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
There is no preposition in the embedded sentence, so we use
the relative pronoun that or which:
2. Do you bookmark the Web sites that you visit
often?
![Page 9: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
There is no preposition in the embedded sentence, so we use
the relative pronoun that or which:
2. Do you bookmark the Web sites that you visit
often?
![Page 10: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Use “where” as relative pronoun to replace the prepositional phrase.
If you keep the preposition after embedding the sentence as an
adjective clause, us which (not that):
![Page 11: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
#3. The box at the top of your browser is the place in
__________ you type the Web address.
![Page 12: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Main Sentence:The box at the top of your
browser is the place.
Embedded Sentence:You type the Web address in the place.
![Page 13: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
There is a preposition in the embedded sentence, but we are
keeping the preposition in the final sentence, so we use which:
3. The box at the top of your browser is the place
in which you type the Web address.
![Page 14: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
In this kind of adjective clause, use which. Don’t use that.
It is equally correct to use relative pronoun where to
replace the whole prepositional phrase:
![Page 15: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
The box at the top of your browser is the
place where you type the Web address.
![Page 16: Page 245, exercise 13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062418/556c45fdd8b42a23608b4a95/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
