Page 2 ~ THE VILLAGER/September 23, 2016 THE COMMUNIQUÉ www.theaustinvillager.com Equal Justice Initiative Founder, Author Bryan Stevenson to Speak Sept. 27 AUSTIN, TX - The Seminary of the Southwest is hosting a free public lecture by Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Ini- tiative, Sept. 27, 7 p.m., at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Auditorium (2313 Red River St.). Stevenson’s highly praised work on fighting poverty and challenging ra- cial discrimination is particularly relevant during these trying times. He has worked to free scores of people from wrongful or excessive punishment, arguing five times before the Supreme Court. Stevenson is a renowned lawyer and faculty mem- ber at NYU School of Law who has represented capital defendants and prisoners for more than 30 years. Stevenson’s work has garnered international acclaim, including the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant and the Olof Palme Prize in Sweden for human rights, and he is the author of the New York Times bestseller book “Just Mercy,” which will soon be made into a major motion picture starring Michael B. Jor- dan. The event is in partnership with the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement and the Will- iam Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law. Park- ing is available free of charge in the LBJ Library lot. Participants, enrolled in Lone Star Links George Washington Carver Full Steam Ahead Academy, are high school students in Southwestern University’s Upward Bound Program. This college preparatory experience is augmented by Lone Star’s Saturday STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineer- ing, Arts, and Math) sessions, summer visits to central Texas technology companies and Parent University classes. “The parent’s component provides both stu- dents and parents shoulder to shoulder workshops on how to secure college financial aid as well as work- shops on navigating college life,” according to Terri Burditt, Lone Star’s Program Coordinator. Throughout the evening, Comedian, KevOnStage, encouraged humor and purposeful giving for the 17 September Vegas at the Vineyard casino night held in Florence, Texas. As emcee, he guided guests through the evening’s activities, which included grabbing fists of cash inside a money tube and exchanging gambling chips for raffle tickets to win luxury prizes such as a California vacation package.
