Stevenson to Speak Sept. 27
AUSTIN, TX - The Seminary of the Southwest ishosting a free public lecture by Bryan Stevenson,founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Ini-tiative, Sept. 27, 7 p.m., at the Lyndon Baines JohnsonAuditorium (2313 Red River St.). Stevenson’s highlypraised work on fighting poverty and challenging ra-cial discrimination is particularly relevant during thesetrying times. He has worked to free scores of peoplefrom wrongful or excessive punishment, arguing fivetimes before the Supreme Court.
Stevenson is a renowned lawyer and faculty mem-ber at NYU School of Law who has represented capitaldefendants and prisoners for more than 30 years.Stevenson’s work has garnered international acclaim,including the prestigious MacArthur Foundation GeniusGrant and the Olof Palme Prize in Sweden for humanrights, and he is the author of the New York Timesbestseller book “Just Mercy,” which will soon be madeinto a major motion picture starring Michael B. Jor-dan.
The event is in partnership with the Division ofDiversity and Community Engagement and the Will-iam Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law. encouraged humor and purposeful giving for the 17September Vegas at the Vineyard casino night held inFlorence, Texas. As emcee, he guided guests throughthe evening’s activities, which included grabbing fistsof cash inside a money tube and exchanging gamblingchips for raffle tickets to win luxury prizes such as aCalifornia vacation package. Lone Star’s, Fund Devel-opment Chair, Tiffany Lemon, summed up the night’sfestivities thusly, “We had fun, we had a meaningfulevening that will touch the lives of some great youngpeople whose hearts and minds are set on obtaining acollege degree.”
