While I was in college, I had the opportunity to study in Jerusalem for a period of six months. During this time, I had the great fortune of spending Holy Week and Easter in the city where all these events had happened so many centuries ago. The week began with Palm Sunday: after going to Mass. we walked out of the Old City and up the Mount of Olives to take part in a big procession that they have every year. My first impression was just how diverse this group was. There were pilgrims from all over the world, from Nigeria, South Korea, Brazil, the United States, from Germany and Poland, Catholics and Protestants, believers and the merely curious. Franciscans led us in songs and prayers but each group added their own traditions to the mix. I remember as we began to crest the Mount of Olives, as we walked from the old site of Bethphage and Bethany, we could see the Temple Mount as Jesus and his disciples would have seen it.

I noticed that standing along the procession route was a group of Palestinian Christians holding aloft a banner that read, “We want Jesus, We want Peace.” Their slow chant alternated between Arabic and English, “We want Jesus, We want Peace.” In that moment I was overwhelmed with the reality of what Palm Sunday is truly about; it is about the deep yearning that exists in each and every one of us to Know God and to Feel His Peace in our lives.

Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem two thousand years ago would have been very similar: pilgrims from all over the Mediterranean world pouring into the Holy City looking for peace. They came to celebrate what God had done for them in the Passover from Egypt and they looked forward to future deliverance from evil and oppression in the world. Their hopes and desires are not too different from our own: justice for the widow, the orphan, the immigrant, peace in our city and in our world, alleviation for the poor and suffering. Our hearts yearn for a savior and we, like the pilgrims walking with Jesus, see in Christ the fulfillment of those hopes.

The Promise of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem is one of hope and peace, that God will remain with His people and continue to set them free from slavery to sin and death. It is a promise that we remember this day because it is our promise as well. We, too, wave palms and cry out Hosanna because we recognize in Christ the fulfillment of our deepest hopes and desires. Nothing else in this life will satisfy the yearning we feel in the deepest recesses of our hearts. Though we often confuse that desire for other things and go after other gods, Christ alone will satisfy. The King of Glory comes to us, meek and humble, riding on a donkey… will we open the gates of our heart to let him in?

In Christ,

HOLY THURSDAY FOOT WASHING On Holy Thursday, March 29, at the 7:00 PM Mass, we will commemorate the Last Supper of Our Lord. At the original supper, Our Lord was again servant to all and showed this by washing the feet of the apostles. We need twelve “humble apostles”/volunteers who will allow the celebrant to wash their feet at Mass. There will be one short, 30 minute practice on Saturday, March 24 at 9:00 AM in the church.

We need you. Please volunteer by leaving your name and phone number with one of the ushers at Mass or by phoning the parish office (773) 725-7641 with that same information.

HOLY THURSDAY PILGRIMAGE

We will gather after the Holy Thursday Liturgy for our annual pilgrimage to different churches. Please circle March 29th on your calendar and join us on our journey. The churches we will visit this year are: Saint Thomas Becket, Saint Emily, Saint Raymond

Abstinence from meat is to be

observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday

and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who

are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may

take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one‘s needs, but

eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special

Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday

and encouraged for Holy Saturday.

PONTIFICAL GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land.

Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and other religious education. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines.

The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these ties of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees.

When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land.

PLEASE BE GENEROUS.

The requirements are listed below: 1. The girl must be a practicing Catholic whose family is

registered as parishioners of Saint Pascal. 2. The girl must be attending a Catholic High School in

the fall. 3. The girl must take school seriously and be aiming for

good grades. 3. The girl should submit a list of all of the activities she

participates in with the church, school and/ or the community she lives in.

4. The girl should submit an original paper in her own words on, “Why a Catholic High School Education Is Important to Me”. Please submit a typed paper of 200 words or more, double spaced.

There is a great need for Ministers of Care volunteers to visit the sick and elderly of our faith community in their homes and in local hospitals and nursing facilities. By giving just an hour or two a week, Ministers of Care make it possible for those among us who are home bound or experiencing a time of illness to receive Holy Communion and prayerful companionship that is always much appreciated. The sacramental ministry of prayer and Holy Communion is central to the work of Ministers of Care, as we reach out to those in need to give them the gift of listening and Christian fellowship.

Each new Minister of Care receives a 10-hour training program that focuses on spirituality, the experience of suffering, listening skills, ministerial procedures, prayer and the sacraments. Chaplain Rick Nash and the retired priests who lead the training bring with them a lifetime of wisdom, compassion, and love of ministry.

The next 5-week series of training classes for New Ministers of Care will begin on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at Presence - Saint Benedict Center in Niles. For a brochure or more information about the Ministry of Care contact Chaplain Rick Nash at 847-651-8718 or email him at [email protected].

Thank you and may God Bless you.

POPE FRANCIS TWEET

If we encounter Jesus and our brothers and sisters every day, our hearts will not dwell in the past or the future. They will live in God’s present moment, in peace with everyone.

Serving means fol

The essence of discipleship is that we carry Jesus’s cross. Disciples go wherever the Master goes. Coming to understand who Jesus is, His mission, and how that relates to us, His disciples, is not an easy task. Attaining such understanding takes a lifetime. Like Jesus, to be faithful followers by taking up our cross means we will feel this in the depths of our humanity: we will suffer, we will lose heart, we will cry out to God to take life’s miserable lot away from us. But also, like Jesus, we have divine life which gives us the strength to carry our cross. It is the divine life pulsating within us, which we first receive at our baptism, that raises up our humanity, enabling us to be faithful disciples carrying our crosses.

Because next weekend is Easter, the most joyous celebration of the year, the monthly SVDP food collection will occur the following weekend on April 7 and 8.

The Saint Pascal Society of Saint Vincent de Paul wishes everyone a blessed Easter.
