Ulysses S. Grant
was commander-in-
chief of the Union
Army in the Civil
War, and later
president of the
United States for
two terms. The Honorable E. B.
Washburne, his secretary of sate,
gives this testimony to the
simplicity of Grant:
“When Grant left his headquarters
to enter on a vital campaign, he did
not take with him the trappings
and paraphernalia so common
among military men. All depended
upon the quickness of the
movement. It was important that
he should be encumbered with as
little baggage as possible. He took
with him no orderly, nor horse, nor
a servant, nor an overcoat, not
even a clean shirt. His entire
baggage for six days – I was with
him at the time – was a
toothbrush. He fared like the
commonest soldier in the
command, partaking of his rations
and sleeping on the ground with no
covering except the canopy of
heaven.”
General Grant traveled light. So
did Jesus and His apostles. We
read in today’s Gospel how Jesus
sent out His leaders, telling them
to take no food, no traveling bag,
no money, no extra outer garment.
What does this have to do with us?
You and I are called to be apostles,
to spread the message of Christ by
word and action. We can do better
if we are not weighed down with a
lot of unimportant things that take
our time, our attention, and our
money. Some of these gadgets
contribute to our comfort and help
us do our work more efficiently and
quickly. Many, however, are extra
baggage, taking our time and our
mind f rom sp i r i tua l and
intellectual effort.
Am I suggesting and we give away
all our material goods and live like
the poorest beggar? Not at all.
God does not expect that. We are
not Puritans. But the spirit of
Christ is that we free ourselves of
the superfluous, the unnecessary
piles of extra “things” that weigh
us down physically and spiritually.
I am suggesting, for example, that
we do not imitate the high school
girl who has twenty-six sweaters,
most of which she never wore, or
the wife of one of our recent
ambassadors to England who had
over 1000 pairs of shoes, or those
who cause the sinful fact that
nearly 65% of the food ordered in
restaurants is thrown away.
Of course, doing without things
must be relative. A carpenter, for
instance, needs tools, a doctor
needs expensive office equipment,
a cook needs kitchen utensils, a
lawyer needs shelves of law books.
But all of us, some more than
others, can find many material
possessions we can do without,
things that keep us from thinking
and speaking and acting freely.
Recently some friends of mine had
to move to another city. They
spent at least five times more
energy gathering, sorting, packing
and transporting non-essential
“junk” than they spent on moving
essentials. That is a common
experience.
We are on a journey to heaven.
The less “baggage” we carry the
more we can concentrate on
essentials, the more time we can
give to family and the spiritual.
Travel light. God bless you!
Fr. K’s Korner
My homily on the weekend of June
30 / July 1 contained a prayer
found in the pocket of a dead
Confederate Soldier who was killed
during the Battle of Gettysburg
during the American Civil War.
Since I have been asked by several
parishioners for a copy of this
prayer, it is provided here:
I asked for health,
that I might do great things;
I was given infirmity,
that I might do better things …
I asked for riches,
that I might be happy;
I was given poverty,
that I might be wise …
I asked for power,
that I might have the praise of men;
I was given weakness,
that I might feel the need for God
…
I asked for all things,
that I might enjoy life;
I was given life,
that I might enjoy all things …
I got nothing that I asked for,
but everything I hoped for.
Almost despite myself,
my unspoken prayers were
answered.
I am among all men
most richly blessed.

Sharing the Gospel
In today's Gospel reading, Jesus
prepared his disciples for a mission
trip, where they would help the
people in area towns and teach
them about God. Before they left,
Jesus asked his disciples to travel
light-they were to bring no food or
clothes or money. They could not
survive without God's help. Jesus
also asked them to heal people.
They could not heal without God's
power, either. God provided
everything they needed for their
mission trip.
Prayer
Dear God, help me always to remember
that it is your power that turns people's
lives around. Amen.

Growing up in Youngstown, Ohio, my family attended Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel Parish, an Italian nationality parish. This Monday is the optional
memorial of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Mount Carmel is a part of the
mountain range in northern Israel, significant to Christians for the biblical
association with the prophet Elijah. In the twelfth century, the Carmelites
were founded at a site that is supposed to have been Elijah’s cave and so
their monastery was built there.
For this reason the Carmelites honor the Blessed Virgin Mary under the
title Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. The English Carmelite St. Simon Stock is
believed to have given the brown scapular by Our Lady, and those who
wear it believe they can be sure of her help at the hour of their death.
