Background
To fully exploit ENVISAT satellite data for science & for pollution
and global change monitoring extensive validations are needed
Advantages of in situ aircraft data for validation of satellite data:
- many species are measured simultaneously
- independent, well characterized and proven techniques
- high accuracies
- ability to sample highly coincident data

Conclusions
- The M55-Geophysica in situ data from July 2002 are of high quality and
are ready for comparison with ENVISAT data
- First comparisons with MIPAS-E standard products from 4 limb scans:
only for stratospheric measurements

- Larger deviations and variances in tropopause region
- First comparisons look promising, but more comparisons are
needed for sound assessment of ENVISAT data quality
- Next validation campaign: February/March 2003 in Kiruna
