MIDWEST DIGESTWeekly Newspaper In South Dakota Closes

SPEARFISH (AP) — The Lawrence County Journal weekly newspa-per launched in western South Dakota in 2004 has closed.

The Spearfish newspaper was part of the Black Hills Weekly Group,which is owned by the Rapid City Journal. That paper’s publisher,Brad Slater, attributes the Lawrence County Journal’s closure to the“economic climate.”

Slater says offices in Spearfish, Deadwood and Newell have beenclosed and one customer service worker at each site lost a job.

He says journalists and sales staff at the Lawrence County Journalwill continue working for other weeklies in the Black Hills WeeklyGroup.

The Lawrence County Journal had a weekly circulation of 2,000.

Supreme Court Hears Comment On CamerasPIERRE (AP) — The South Dakota Supreme Court has heard testi-

mony on two competing proposals for allowing cameras and otherrecording devices in the state’s trial courts.

Circuit Judge David Gienapp of Brookings says he supports a pro-posal recommended by the majority of a study committee. It wouldallow television cameras, still cameras and audio recording devices intrials or hearings only if a judge and all parties in a case agree.

Another proposal suggested by news organizations would presumecircuit court proceedings are open to recording devices unless a judgedecides cameras would interfere with the fairness of the proceeding.

The Supreme Court will decide later whether to change rules toallow cameras in trial courts.

Man Sentenced For Attempted MurderABERDEEN (AP) — An Aberdeen man has been sentenced to

serve 25 years in prison after admitting to stabbing two people,including the mother of his children.

The Aberdeen American News reports that 29-year-old ThomasAtkinson pleaded guilty to charges of attempted murder and aggra-vated assault.

The counts stem from an altercation he had with the mother ofhis two children a year ago.

Atkinson initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity butchanged the pleas on Wednesday. He said he didn’t rememberdetails of the event because of his mental state and the fact that hewas drunk, but that after reading police reports and hearing state-ments from friends he concluded he was “completely at fault.”

Lawmakers Hear Concerns Over Health LawLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The federal health care overhaul is drawing

mixed reviews from Nebraska health care professionals.The Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee heard

Thursday from various facets of the health care industry. The commit-tee will implement federal health care reform.

Bruce Rieker with the Nebraska Hospital Association warned law-makers that he believes the law’s Medicaid expansion and otherchanges will cost Nebraska hospitals between $1.15 billion and $1.6billion over the next 10 years.

Rieker says his group developed those numbers with help from theAmerican Hospital Association, which has criticized the Medicaidexpansion.

But JoAnn Lamphere with AARP said health care costs were skyrocket-ing before reform, and that the overhaul law will cut those increases.

School Bus Driver Faces Child Abuse ChargePLATTSMOUTH, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska City school bus driver

who dropped a 6-year-old boy off 15 miles away from home is now fac-ing a child abuse charge.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that prosecutors filed the misde-meanor charge against 71-year-old Thomas Mead on Wednesday.

In August, Mead dropped the boy far from his home in Union.School officials said the boy had gotten on the wrong bus outsideNorthside Elementary in Nebraska City.

Union was Mead’s last stop on his route. Mead told police that hecalled his boss and was told to drop the boy in Union.

A nearby construction worker helped the boy call home.The district now takes additional steps to make sure students get

on the right bus and are dropped at the correct stop.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — TheSeptember arrest of a man in the2007 death of his infant daughterwas legal despite claims from hisattorney that it wasn’t, stateprosecutors say in a filing withthe Nebraska Supreme Court.

Lucas Peterson, 25, has beencharged with child abuse resultingin death and unlawful burial. Hecould face life in prison if convict-ed.

Prosecutors believe the near-ly 1-year-old Trista Peterson diedin January 2007 at her father’s

apartment in Pleasant Dale,about 70 miles southwest ofOmaha. Lucas Peterson cut adeal with prosecutors and ledauthorities to her body in a shal-low grave in neighboring ButlerCounty in April of that year.

Peterson was arrested withinhours of the state SupremeCourt’s Sept. 24 decision allowingcharges in his case despite a dealwith prosecutors.

His attorney Jeff Pickens hascalled the arrest illegal and hasasked the high court to weigh in.
