amending the Chanhassen Gateway Planned Unit Development Design Standards as follows:CHANHASSEN GATEWAYPUD DEVELOPMENT DESIGN STANDARDSa. IntentThe purpose of this zone is to create a MIXED USE PUD including a Neighborhood Commercial, office and

Residential. The use of the PUD zone is to allow for more flexible design standards while creating a higherquality and more sensitive development. Each structure proposed for development shall proceed through siteplan review based on the development standards outlined below. The Neighborhood Business Districtregulations shall apply to Lots 1-3, Block 1 and Outlot A, Crossroads of Chanhassen , except as modified by thisordinance. Exhibit A reflects the site layout and buildings as referenced herein.

k. Lighting1. Lighting for the interior of the development shall be consistent throughout the development. High

pressure sodium vapor lamps or LED with decorative natural colored pole shall be used throughout thedevelopment parking lot area for lighting. Decorative, pedestrian scale lighting shall be used in plaza andsidewalk areas and may be used in parking lot areas. Parking lot light poles may not exceed 25 feet in height.

During a morning interview from Tucson, Ariz., where he was signing books at the Tucson Book Festival, Scott Simon came across every bit as relaxed as his radio per-sonality.

“I was told the interview would be at 9 a.m.,” said the reporter, who waited dutifully until 10 a.m. (Center Stan-dard Time) before calling the award-winning journalist’s cell phone number for a 9 a.m. interview, as instructed by Simon’s agent.

“So was I. The time here is 8 a.m.,” replied Simon.

Unlike Minnesota, Arizona does not observe daylight sav-ings time. Apparently, neither do Simon or his wife, Caroline Richard, proud parents to two young, adopted Chinese daughters, Elise and Lina.

Undaunted by the mix up, Simon consented to proceed with the early chat.

“Now is a great time to talk. We have two young children. We’re awake, I promise,” he said with a chuckle.

The National Public Radio host is scheduled to make a

stop at Bet Shalom Congre-gation, a Jewish synagogue on Sunday. His topic will be world events and community. Sipping on a Starbucks Cof-fee Monday morning, Simon responded to questions regard-ing communities and commu-nications in the United States and worldwide.

Q: As a world traveler and news analyst, what is your sense of community? How would you defi ne the concept, and do you think it’s important for people to belong to a community?

A: I’m sure there’s a diction-

ary defi nition. I think of com-munity as being a lot to people who feel a common sense of responsibility to each other. We live now in an age where you have online communities, where groups of people think of themselves as inhabiting a community, and they may be. But our defi nition of commu-nity is getting stretched and changed. The way I use it is to mean any group of people that have a sense of responsibility with one another. While we

may be in online communities, I hope that will not diminish our sense of identity with peo-ple across the street. I believe our participation in commu-nity will be a very important way out of the problems we’re facing now as a nation.

Q: Do you see more a sense of community or a fragmenting of community in the United States?

A: Here’s a political answer. I see both. I think the sense of community spirit and identity in America are undergoing a resurgence of sorts. By resur-gence I mean the building and promoting of a local sense of shared identity. For instance, we see people that want to sup-port local businesses popping up all around. At the same time, obviously the franchises have moved in. I’m not some-body who takes a natural dis-dain to that. I remember when we were in China the fi rst time to adopt one of our daughters, somebody in China, our guide, said they couldn’t understand why Americans got so bent out of shape about a Starbucks in the Forbidden City. From the Chinese perspective, Star-

bucks was the best coffee in the world, so they wanted that in the Forbidden City. Really, I think, what is important is having community spirit and resolve. This all gets back to a sense of responsibility to one another.

Q: You live in a diverse family unit and have seen diversity around the world. What characteristics are shared by people of di-verse backgrounds, be they Jewish, French, Chinese, Germans, etc.? (Simon is Jewish. His wife is French. Their two daughters are Chinese.)

A: I think it’s a sense of humor. It can be and often is different. People like to laugh. We just spent two weeks in India. We spent one a week for a wedding and a week for tour-ism. Their sense of humor is outstanding. (Simon is the son of a comedian.)

The concern for children is also common and the desire to leave them a better world. That’s essentially what we’re in this life to do — leave our children a better world. I think it’s a very common under-standing.

Q: How important is com-munication in forming com-munity?

A: It’s the way people un-derstand the world. Because of that, it forms our sense of community. It is absolutely the way that we interact with each other.

Q: Do you feel that we live at a time where we don’t need to hear the news that

we don’t want to hear? A: Yes. The news industry

is now very fragmented. We’re living in an environment now when you don’t have to hear any news that upsets you. You can only take in the news that ratifies your vision of the world. I don’t think that kind of news is responsible journalism. It’s not wise as a country for us to do that. Real news, good news must have an air of audacity to challenge an audience and challenge them to rethink how they see the world.

Q: What story have you covered that challenged you?

A: The Siege of Sarajevo was a siege that lasted from 1992 to 1996 that shook my view. I expect it to remain the main story that shook me. It fundamentally upset my view of the world. I believed when I covered this story that when people had the information about what was happening, they would be roused to action. It turned out to just be easy for people to not be aroused. You had what amounted to a Holo-caust, and people had excuses for not taking actions.
