Scholar talkKrushangi Patel and Ajay Jariwala, winners of LPS Scholarship Foundation’s scholarship reveal why the foundation is as muchabout helping students as it is about making a difference in lives…

Q: Your purpose to take the scholarshipKrushangi Patel (KP): To study medicineat the University of Missouri-KansasCity’s BA/MD program. I am currently studyingPharmaceutical Science.

Q: How has the scholarship helped? KP:As six-year medical students, we takeclasses all year long. This means thatwe have to pay for summers along withnormal semesters. It is quite a task to

come up with the amount of moneyneeded for each year. Furthermore, theprices go up each year making it moreand more difficult with time. Nextsummer, I have theopportunity to takecourses in Swedenbecause I havecompleted my under-graduate courses.During year five, I willhave to travel to makedecisions about whereI want to apply forresidency. With allthese costs, thescholarship makes ahuge difference. Also,if I keep up my GPA, Imight as well get achance to renew myscholarship.AJ: The monetary awardI received helped me

pay for college tuition. Also, CampbellUniversity is a private school; thereforethe award helped me a lot with payingthe tuition.

Q: Any message to the community?KP: I would like to thank the Leuvaparents for all of their support. Thisscholarship would not be possiblewithout continued financialsponsorship. This kindness on the partof the LPS community and the parentsthat support it, has taught me toappreciate the societal reinforcementthat I receive. I try my best to give thatkindness back in any way possible. Ivolunteer once a month at a free clinic.I have also begun an effort to providemoney to an organization called Ekal

Vidhyala that helps to build schools inIndia. Through this, I can give back tothe community that has given to me. Ihope that Leuva parents will continue

to fund this scholarshipto help many otherstudents reach their goalsand help the Leuvacommunity as a whole toprogress.AJ: The Leuva Scholarshipprogram is excellent. Itcomes from our ownculture, which shows thatthey are helping theiryouth excel with furthereducation.

Mother of the Three WorldsANNAPURNA literally means ‘one ofplenteous food’. An incarnation ofGoddess Parvati, Annapurna is the Hindugoddess of food and cooking.

Holding a jeweled vessel containingfood in one hand and a spoon to distributefood in the other, Goddess Annapurnaprovides food and nourishment to theentire universe. Even Lord Shiva, herhusband, is often depicted with a skullbegging bowl before the goddess, askingfor food.

Legend has it Shiva once told Parvatithat the world is an illusion and matter isjust a mirage, here one moment, gonethe next. Even food is just maya. Onhearing this, Parvati being the mother ofall material things including food, losther temper. ‘If I am just an illusion, let’s see how you andthe rest of the world get along without me,’ she said anddisappeared from the world.

Her disappearance caused devastation in the world. Timestood still, seasons did not change and a terrible droughtmade the earth completely barren. Not even a morsel offood was left in the three worlds of Akaash, Pataal and Dharti.Parvati’s heart melted when she saw the misery of theuniverse, and she appeared at Kashi to set up a kitchen.

With the power to feed the entire universe, the goddess of food ensures that her worshippers never go hungry …

Generous deity: Annapurna Devi

On hearing about her return, Lord Shivaran to her and presented his bowl in almssaying, ‘Now I realise that the materialworld cannot be dismissed as an illusion.’

Parvati smiled and fed Shiva with herown hands. Since then, Parvati isworshipped as Annapurna Devi - themother goddess of food. Her imageserving food to lord Shiva is depicted inmany temples across India. It is said thatthe goddess does not eat a morsel, unlessall her devotees in her temple have beenfed.

In Unja village of Gujarat, she isworshipped as Umiya Maata. While inKerala, a packet of food is left tied to thebranch of a tree at a temple dedicated tothe goddess, even after all devotees have

been fed. This is done with the thought that even a thiefshould not go without food.

Sage Adi Shankaracharya has captured the greatness ofGoddess Annapurna in this soulful verse:

Annapoorne sadaa poorne Shankarah PraanavallabheGnana Vairagya Siddhyartham Bhikshaan Dehi ca ParvatiMother Annapurna, you who are eternally complete, you,

the very life of lord Shiva, give me food (in alms) so that Ican sustain my body to achieve the Supreme Knowledge.

THE NINE heady nights of Navratrimay simply mean dressing up intraditional attire and gyrating to thetunes of Gujarati raas-garba songs andoften even Bollywood numbers tomost youngsters. The deep religioussignificance of this festival is oftenlost behind the sequined full umbrellaskirts and cholis (blouses) withdazzling mirror work. The purpose ofthe dance has perhaps changed to thatof evoking fun and plain enjoymentdevoid of spiritual depth.

Taking a peek into the world beyond the jazzy high-energy dances would show that Navratri is originally adeeply religious festival of worship through dance. The wordNavratri in Sanskrit literally means nine nights. During thesefestive nights, nine different forms of Shakti (female divinity)are worshipped. These are Durga (the inaccessible one),Bhadrakali, Amba or Jagadamba (mother of the universe),Annapurna (one who bestows grains in plenty), Sarvamangala(one who gives joy to all), Bhairavi, Chandika or Chandi,Lalita and Bhavani.

The festival is divided into sets of three days to worshipthree different aspects of the goddess. The first three days

Beyond the glittering frenzy of Navratri

are dedicated to Durga who is toutedas the destroyer of all impurities, vicesand defects in humankind. During thenext three days, goddess Lakshmi, thegiver of spiritual wealth is invoked. The final three days are spent inworshipping the goddess of wisdom,Saraswati.

During Navratri, some devotees ofDurga observe a fast and prayers areoffered for the protection of healthand property. On the tenth day ofNavratri, Dusshera, an effigy of

Ravana is burnt to celebrate the victory of good (Rama)over evil.

The traditional form of dance practiced during the festivalis garba, which originated in Gujarat. The term garba refersto a deep or a small earthenware lamp. During Navratri, alight is placed inside a pot with attractive designs, aroundwhich women dance. Similarly, raas, the form of dancethat involves striking wooden sticks or dandiya fitted withbells in unison, goes back to the legends of Lord Krishna.

Perhaps, re-invoking the spiritual aspects of the dancewould add that extra energy to the festivities and help toexperience an inner happiness that goes beyond just fun.

Twirling Thrills: Women performgarba steps

Rediscovering the spiritual meaning of the nine nights would show that there’s more to the festival thanjust dancing in fancy outfits…

GUM DISEASE (also calledperiodontal disease) is themost common dentalproblem and a major causeof tooth loss in adults today. The bad news is that itusually develops without anywarning signs and withoutcausing any pain, so youmay not notice anything untilthe disease is serious and youare in danger of losing teeth.

The dangerous effects ofgum disease can even gobeyond teeth, as recentresearch suggests that theremay be a link betweenperiodontal disease and otherhealth concerns, such ascardiovascular problems, stroke and bacterialpneumonia. Pregnantwomen with gum diseaseare also at an increased riskof delivering pre-term, low-weight babies.

The good news is thatwith proper care, gumdisease can often beprevented. Even if it doesstart, it can usually be treatedand arrested if you catch itin the early stages.

Gum disease prevention and treatmentA plaque problem can grow into a serious disease, which can even lead to tooth loss…

Gum disease is caused bya clear, sticky film of bacteriathat forms on your teeth, otherwise known as plaque. If it is not removed every dayby brushing and flossing, ithardens into tartar and canlead to an infection of thetissues surrounding andsupporting the teeth.

In the mildest form of thedisease, you may not feel anydiscomfort but may notice thatyour gums are red, swollen ortender, and that your gumsbleed when you brush yourteeth. At this early stage ofperiodontal disease (known asgingivitis), your gum diseasecan still be reversed withstringent at-home hygiene andprofessional in-officetreatments.

If left unattended, plaque can spread and growbelow the gumline, leadingto periodontitis. This is anadvanced stage of gumdisease resulting in seriousdamage as the gums andbone that support the teethdeteriorate, leading to toothloss.

Eat Healthy: Tuck in pumpkin tohelp your diabetes

THE COMMON vegetablepumpkin will now be moretastier than ever as Chinesescientists have claimed thatit can “drastically” reducethe need for daily insulininjections for millions ofdiabetic patients worldwide.

Scientists havediscovered a compound inpumpkin that has beenknown to promote theregeneration of damagedinsulin-producing beta cells indiabetic rats, therebyimproving the level of insulinin their blood.

Laboratory data showedthat diabetic rats that had

You can avoidgum disease bypracticing thesesimple steps:

1. Floss everyd a y : F l o s s i n gremoves plaque frombetween your teethand under yourgumline, where yourtoothbrush can’treach. Floss beforeyou brush our teeth, preferably beforeyou go to bed atnight.

2. Brush yourteeth after eating: Atthe very least, brushafter breakfast andnever forget to brushbefore you go to bed.

3. Maintain a healthylifestyle: That means anutritious diet, andabstinence from tobacco, theuse of which has been linkedto the development of gumdisease and oral cancer.

4. Visit your dentistregularly for professionalcleanings, where the dentistor hygienist will remove any

plaque or tartar. If yourgingivitis has progressed toperiodontitis, you may alsoneed gum scaling (deepcleaning of the teeth aboveand below the gumline) androot planning (to smoothenand clean the roots of yourteeth).

LEUVA Patidar Samaj of USA, has recently been grantedthe long awaited Public Charity Non-Profit organisation statusknown as 501 [C] (3) by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

This means life as well as annual membership with oursamajik organisation is fully non-taxable and enjoys totaltax deductibility. Achieving this IRS status has been a difficulttask, one that has taken year-long planning and effort byLPS President BN Patel, advisory board memberRanchhodbhai Lakha and Attorney Mustafa in Los Angeles.LPS is grateful to all of these and the IRS.

‘Congratulations! As indicated in the attached letter fromthe Internal Revenue Service, the IRS has given preliminaryapproval to our application for tax-exempt status underSection 501(c)(3) of the Tax Code. As someone who has always beenacademically inclined, Anand believeshis super performance must be creditedto his parents. ‘They’ve always told meto focus on my studies, and that single-minded direction helped a lot,’ he says.

Ask him for a simple suggestion thatcan help other students and Anand isquick to reply. ‘I always did homeworkright after school: things were still freshand nothing piled up to an impossiblelist then.’ As someone who believes inworking at something till it works outfor you, Anand believes kids his age‘give up too easily.’ ‘Don’t give up justbecause it’s not easy. Even if it seems

really difficult, oryou’re outnumberedby statistics, don’tgive up,’ he says.

Wise words for an18-year old wholoves to play frisbee, football andbasketball and iscrazy about hip-hopand R&B. Home is six hours away, andwhile living alone for the first time isdifficult, Anand believes ‘it’s the nextstep in life.’ And what does he miss mostabout home? ‘Food,’ he grins.

Fond memories: Delicious home food Future aspiration: Nanotechnology

A day for all of usLeuva Patidar Day imbibes the values of the community’s roots and intends to harness them for the good of our cominggenerations…

C O N N E C T I O NLEUVA

WHEN BHAGUBHAI Patelhad famously called it anattempt to create ‘ourcommunity’s version ofMother’s Day or Father’sDay’, no one was really surewhat Leuva Patidar Daywould have in store.

And yet, when LPSmembers got together tocelebrate the ‘Leuva Day’ in

California on July 14,it was a specialoccasion that cele-brated the values andculture that ourcommunity thrives on.

While the oldergeneration bondedover issues such as lifeaway from India andthe need for the

communityto have a socialstanding andability tocommand res-pect, theyounger gen-eration mingledwithin their agegroups. Theyouth learnt whythe community issuch a passion

for their parents: and why ourheritage and culture needs tobe celebrated and safe-guarded. Friends were made, experiences shared andnostalgia trips taken galore. Then there were thequintessential elements ofany Leuva meet: lip-smacking food and widesmiles for photographs.

Perhaps the most

Leuva Patidar DayLEUVA

important achieve-ment of this comingtogether was thatLeuva families got tospend time with eachother, in an age wherewe are gettingincreasingly pressedfor time, speciallywith our loved ones. And that is what theLeuva Day essentially

set out to be: a day for thefamily, not only one’simmediate family, but all ourrelatives and communitymembers. LPS memberspresent at the event wereamazed at how much they’drediscovered about theirfamilies and are alreadylooking forward to next yearand the second Saturday ofJuly!

Remembering roots: LPS members posetogether during the celebrations

Family first: Leuva Patidar Day is allabout putting our loved ones first

Dear Members,

These past months have been an exciting time at LPS: one filled with projectsand programs. And yes, a heartening participation by all our members, for whichI’m deeply grateful. Thanks to your support, LPS has been able to create landmarkevents that have provided inspiration to many other community associations.Yet another project that I hope will follow this torch-bearing philosophy of otherLPS events is www.ilovemyculture.com

As a community, the biggest contribution we can give to our young Leuvageneration is to equip them with the understanding and appreciation of our greatIndian culture and roots. ilovemyculture.com has answers to the many questionsyouth ask. From the spiritually inclined (What temples are there in India) to thescientific and analytical (Why do we do certain rituals? What does our cultureoffer?), the site offers easy and genuine information. Please do visit the site andgive us your feedback.

Meanwhile, we’ve had a busy schedule at LPS highlighted by the successfulcompletion of the Youth Summit in Cincinnati, Ohio in June. The two-day event iscovered in greater detail on page4. The comments of the young attendees makefor an insightful read.

Another highlight was the LPS golf-tournament held at Atlanta, Georgia in August.Completely funded by sponsors, this two-day event (more details on page19) sawsome major turf magic with the proverbial Georgia hospitality at its best.

Some similarly interesting and inspiring projects have been planned for the nearfuture.

Apart from the several regional meetings throughout the country, we have alsoplanned a Volleyball tournament and picnic in Houston, Texas on September 29and 30.

And finally, there’s good news for members planning trips to India. We will behosting our second International Conference at Swaraj Ashram in Bardoli onDecember 23 this year. We also intend to participate in the Pravasi BharatiyaDivas program to be held in January 2008.

Rounding up, I’d like to draw your attention to the fact that for all of us in the LPScommittee, every day is filled with a sense of excitement and honor in beingable to serve our great community and create an inspiring future for our children. All our members are the soul of LPS. Your participation, support and interestkeeps LPS vibrant, alive and growing. Keep up the love, generosity andparticipation!

Regards,Bhagubhai N PatelLPS of USA President

THEY CAME, they saw and they were conquered. The manyyouth who attended the LPS of USA’s Youth Summit thisyear, went back wow-ed with the event and the info-tainment it offered.

Held at the Crown Plazain Cincinnati, Ohio on June22 and 23, the summit sawan encouraging exchange ofcultural and career-basedknowledge. Sessions such asArt of Living, yoga, expertpanel discussion and peerspeeches proved to beeffective and informative forthe young generation. ForDanny Nagar, this was hissecond LPS Youth Summit, and it made for ‘oneenjoyable weekend.’ ‘TheLeuva Patidar Youth Summitwas a great way to meet newpeople. This was my secondyouth convention and I foundit to be both entertaining andeducational. I enjoyedhaving formal discussions inan informal setting,’ he says.

Echoing Danny wereattendee boys and girls whowere glued into the manyactivities even as local volunteers held classes on a widevariety of subjects. The highlight of the event was a casinonight that saw the youth dance enthusiastically to the tunesof a DJ.

Sixteen-year old Trisha Patel was a first time attendee atthe event and confesses she attended the event because‘my family suggested that it would be a good place to meetnew people and also learn more about our culture.’ Howeverthe teen was glad she attended the function and was quick

to point out her favourite parts. ‘The Ice Breaker sessionhelped me learn more about other people. The Casino RoyaleNight was a lot of fun and was my favorite part. The food

was delicious and theentertainment was alsogood. After attending thissummit, I plan on attendingthe next LPS event also,’ shegrins.

The event was inauguratedby Pundit Muniraam fromTrinidad and attendeesincluded LPS vice presidentDV Patel, Editor Arvind Pateland PR Hasu Patel.

The kudos for the successof the event goes to localvolunteers as well as LPScommittee members.

LPS of USA President BNPatel applauded LPS ofNashville President SunilPatel, Youth chairman JayeshPatel and co- chairman KiritPatidar for making the eventa huge success. An importantrole was also played by localvolunteers Robin Patel,Mukesh Patel, Bobby Das,and Lina Patel as well as

local women volunteers who helped distribute t-shirts withthe LPS of USA logo.

‘I cannot thank all the volunteers enough. Because oftheir hard work, our kids could participate in a good program,’Bagubhai said.

‘Our first Youth Summit was a success because of theefforts of all the members. I encourage all Board of Directorsto attend future programs when possible. Your heart will beuplifted by the goodwill of our community,’ he added.

Bonding as a community‘As a volunteer, I not only hadto oversee the smooth runningof the Youth Summit, but I alsohad the chance to attend theseminars and the classes duringboth days. As a mother of twoyoung children, I can vouch forthe event’s helpfulness for theyouth. Especially the yogasession that not only educatedthe youth about stress and howit impacts the mind and body butalso showed the importance ofinteraction. I will proudly sendmy children when the timecomes for future events such as

this one. Being an American raised Indian, I understand thatwith assimilation we can be in danger of loosing some of ourcultural identity. LPS is trying to prevent such occurrencesand to take full advantage of this, we must attend theseconventions to see for ourselves how much they can do forus and our community. Our families may never meet underdifferent circumstances, but this is a great way to bring ourLPS community together. ‘

Nila PatelYouth Summit volunteer

It started out as an idea at reaching out to gen-next and getting them to connect to each other in this increasingly splinteredworld. As LPS found out with their successful Youth Summit, some things are much easier than they sound…

PRIDE in one’s country and cultural heritage is the hallmarkof every Indian. Our heritage is unique and defines our veryexistence. We are what we are today because of ourheritage. Living abroad, away from one’s homeland, everyparent wants to pass on this preciouslegacy to the next generation.

LPS President Bhagubhai Patel saysthat ‘the responsibility of keeping ourheritage alive rests on every one of us.’

‘It is a sacred responsibility that wehave to fulfill. Our forefathers retainedour heritage and values for us; we arecalled upon to do the same,’ he adds.

We want our children to know andexperience our cultural heritage; wewant them to feel proud of theircommunity and identity. However, even though Indians are proud of having a rich culture andheritage, few are aware of their culture and traditions. It isnot unusual to come across people from outside India, orIndians living abroad, who are more aware of our richheritage than we are.

For most Indians, being aware of our culture simplymeans touching our grandparents’ feet once in a while, knowing a little of the Mahabharata and knowing that

Rama was good and Ravan was bad. However, there is a lot more to culture than just this. As

part of LPS’ endeavor to preserve our cultural heritage, ithas launched the website www.ilovemyculture.com for kids.

It is owned by the Leuva Patidar Samajof USA and developed and maintainedon an honorary basis by CGS InfotechLtd of India.

The website is a very interactive andinteresting medium to reach out to thepresent generation of Internet-savvykids. From important festivals and folkdances to excerpts from the Scriptures, the website gives an insight into manyessential tenets of our culture. Forinstance, the simple but thought-provoking stories from Panchatantra

immediately evoke fond memories of story-telling sessionswith our grandmother or parents. In today’s fast-paced world,we may not have the time to read out stories, but wouldn’twe want our kids to learn some valuable lessons?

We have sought to bring to light many such basicprinciples of Indian tradition through the website. Membersare invited to use this site, download stories and to givesuggestions for the future development of the portal.

Sponsored and envisioned by President Bhagubhai Patel as a tribute to our heritage, www.ilovemyculture.com is an expressionof Global Leuva Samaj’s contribution to Indian culture…

‘The best is yet to come’At 60, India would rather just glance behind and then turn her face ahead towards a promising future…

Flag hoisting: Dr Manmohan Singhat the Red Fort

Young patriots: School children show theirlove for the country

WHEN INDIA comes to celebrate acentury of independence it will be as asuperpower, a trading giant straddling theworld, just next to China -- according toconventional wisdom. That may be 40years away yet, but such predictionsfrom major banks, which put India aheadof Japan by 2025 and the US in 2050,delight many in the country.

The nation of 1.1 billion people --marking 60 years since the subcontinentwas partitioned on August 14-15, 1947 -- proudly sees itself well on the road toeconomic, political and social greatness.

It is a far cry from the harrowing endof British rule, when the colonial flagwas lowered for the last time.

Partition of the sub-continent intomainly Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan-- out of which Bangladesh waseventually born -- triggered a hugepopulation shift and widespreadviolence.

Now, however, the optimism isalmost palpable. In a speech from theramparts of New Delhi’s 17th century RedFort, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, on the occasionof the Independence Day on August 15, lauded India’sdemocracy as its greatest achievement.

‘The success of a secular democracy in a nation of abillion people with such diversity is viewed with admiration,’he said from behind a bullet-proof shield and a tight securitycordon. ‘The best is yet to come,’ Dr Singh predicted, ridinga wave of optimism that Indiais on the threshold ofbecoming a superpower.

On a more somber notethough, he cautioned againstover-confidence from thebooming economy and laidout the tough challengesahead. ‘However, we must notbe over-confident,’ he said.‘We have a long marchahead.’

The dividends of growthhave yet to trickle down to therural poor, Dr Singh admitted, despite his multi-billion dollaraid schemes and pro-poor platform. ‘We cannot becomplacent till the growth becomes inclusive and socio-economic development benefits more than half thepopulation,’ said the economist who in 1991 led reforms thatended decades of socialist insulation.

‘We need at least a decade of hard work and of sustainedgrowth to realise our dreams. We have to bridge the many

divides in our society and work with aunity of purpose,’ Singh said.

Despite the economy growing atnine per cent, the prime ministerpointed to the problems of poverty, malnutrition, unemployment, agrarianstrife, civil unrest and sectarian dividethat still rage in the country.

‘Poverty eradication is now afeasible goal,’ Singh said, adding thatrapid industrialisation was the mosteffective means to create new jobs.

To add to this positive strain, anopinion poll conducted byThe Hindustan Times reflected similaroptimism in young urban Indians. Some 52 per cent of the 1,247respondents between the ages of 16-25 said they were proud of India’sdemocracy.

The editorial of the daily, describingthe mood of the nation, said, ‘Youngand rocking -- this is the popular imageof India as it begins celebrating its 60thbirthday as a free nation.’

The government feeds the frenzy.Commerce Minister Kamal Nath brushed aside speculationabout India’s future, with the statement, ‘The future is India.’Such euphoria moved Congress Party supremo Sonia Gandhito outline her vision of India’s future, not as a traditionalmilitary superpower but ‘a global power for peace, prosperityand progress.’

Oxford history don and India specialist Maria Misra, however, takes umbrage at theidea of India as a stereotypesuperpower flexing musclearound the world. She seesIndia becoming ‘a great, notsuper power’ wielding globalinfluence rather than sheermight.

‘India isn’t going to becomea society like America, it’s toodiverse, neither is it going tobe like China,’ Misra said.‘India is likely to fulfill itsleaders’ ambitions to win it aplace among the GreatPowers,’ she said. ‘But it will

remain a unique hybrid of history -- the product of a curiousconjuncture between an ancient culture, colonialism andmodernity.’

Hybrid or not, dampening the euphoria in this country ofat last having ‘arrived’ on the global stage doesn’t seem tobe easy. Surely, at 60, India is ready to leave behind thebaggage of the past and look ahead at a bright future!
