I’d like to wish every student all the best for their exams and assignments. This is an important time for students and I know that this can sometimes be a pressure time for families. It was wonderful to see so many students taking advantage of the Learning Nest and subject tutorials over the last couple of weeks. I thank and send the community’s best wishes to the staff and students who are involved in the Confraternity League Carnival in the first week of the holidays. On the back of rugby season, our team began their preparations for their change of code this week. Whatever the results of the Confraternity, the commitment and sporting culture they demonstrated throughout the rugby season will form a solid foundation for a good carnival. As carnival hosts, I know that we are grateful to the many staff and parents who are volunteering their time to work at the carnival. I recognise the work of the Confraternity Committee. This group has been expertly led by our Carnival Conveners, Mr. Paul Mansfield, Mr. Ben Lowrie and the committee of Sue Weston, Simon Stower, Scott Maguire, Barry Keegan, Bob Out and John Gorringe. I wish the staff and students travelling to Japan in the holidays a safe and enjoyable experience. Many thanks to Miss Asimus, Miss Crawford, Ms Bailey and Mr Jackson for leading this tour. I also extend my thanks to the staff and students involved in the Cross-Country Camp which is being held in the second week of the holidays. The first weeks of next term have a number of events including Parent/Teacher/Student interviews, Year 10 Senior Pathways Evening, the start of Tennis and Basketball seasons and the AIC Cross Country. AIC Sport - Thank you and Review

Last Saturday marked the end of the chess, football and rugbyseason. It was a great day as St Patrick’s College Shorncliffehosted their ‘Back to Pat’s Day’. I was impressed with the effortthat St Patrick’s College made to make the day a communityevent. There were many food stalls, bands and activitiesorganised. Our Open Football and Rugby teams wore bluesocks to highlight Men’s Health Week and St Patrick’s Collegesupported the Queensland Police Campaign to stop DomesticViolence. The day was certainly bigger than the sport andit highlighted that the education and formation of our boysextends well beyond the classroom. A big thank you to allparents and staff who supported the boys during the chess, football and rugby season. I know that many of our boys arecommitted to their College and sport provides an avenue formany of them to demonstrate this. On the weekend, I heard thestory of two boys who rode their bikes from Aspley to Banyo onone weekend so that they could support their friends. Now thatis a commitment to the ‘Nest’.

At the last Heads of Colleges meeting, the decision was madeto conduct a full review of AIC Sport. The review will be ledby Professor Cliff Mallett from the University of Queensland.Professor Mallett has developed a strong research program intwo broad and interrelated research areas - sport psychologyand coaching. He has conducted previous reviews of sportingclubs and organisations. The review will occur during Semester2 of this year and it will cover the following:

Sue Weston has been appointed the project contact person. She is responsible for arranging appointments, setting up focusgroups and managing the communication around a survey.

If you have a desire to contribute to a focus group or havespecific input that you wish to table, please contact [email protected]

    Space Design Success

For the record, Alexander Craig (Yr11)also made the team but has had to withdraw from the tour.Following on from their success at the Australian Space DesignCompetition, these boys travel to the USA in July to representAustralia. Well done to the boys and to Mr Morris and MrsMathai.

  • The ChaplainLondon, and before that Manchester, andthe litany of Islamic inspired terrorist attackscontinue - Brussels, Nice, Paris, and thetragic list grows. What we legitimately seekis security, and a way of life that centres onour values. What we don’t want is fear, prejudice, ignorance, and above all, acounterbalancing cruelty. Nor do we want

the promotion of death in the Muslim world by selling weaponsto its dictators. (USA and Russia are the prime exporters ofweapons to the rest of the world.) Believe in terror and Isis wins, believe in justice and Isis is defeated.

Maybe the Muslim world can look back at some of its own forinspiration today. Let us raise the ghost of a man known as EmirAbdelkader: Muslim, Sufi, sheikh, ferocious warrior, humanist, mystic and protector of his people against Western barbarism, and protector of Christians against Muslim barbarism.

He stands in opposition to perverted Islam - the man lovededucation, admired the Greek philosophers, he forbade hiswarriors to destroy books, he worshipped a religion whichbelieved - so he thought - in human rights.

We should think of Abdelkader now more than ever. He wasno moderate, no pacifist, but he was not an extremist. Sure, hefought back savagely against the French occupation of his land. When imprisoned by the French he spoke of Christians andMuslims as brothers. He earned the respect of Louis-NapoleonBonaparte and the French paid him a pension of 100,000francs. Abraham Lincoln sent him a pair of Colt pistols!

Think then too of the noble Islamic warriors, Saladin, al-Malikal-Kamil, and Boabdil. Saladin, in contrast to the Crusaders, acting with great magnanimity in his conquest of Jerusalem, in

his treatment of Christians and Jews, and who signed a trucewith Richard the Lionheart of England - considered in his timethe model prince by both Muslims and Christians alike. Al-Malikal-Kamil, who gained the admiration of St. Francis, as theypeacefully dialogued together over some months, attemptingan end to the Crusades. Boabdil, one of the last of the Moorishrulers of Spain, and the last king of Grenada, who even indefeat was admired by his Christian enemies, making graciouscompromises, and he was permitted to govern Grenada evenunder the Catholic kings.

Inspired by the life of St. Francis we must continue in dialoguewith Islam in this country. It is about listening to the sufferingthat they undergo every time they hear of these Islamist inspiredterrorist attacks. It is about the cruelty they experience frominsensitive comments, inaccurately generalising the religion ofIslam. Let us reach out to the people of Islam, believers in theholy book of the Koran, St. Francis would call our brothers andsisters.

    COMMUNICATION

No relationship is sustained unless there is honestcommunication between the parties, whether it be inbusiness, family, married life, or even within schoolcommunities like Padua.

The process of communication involves both sending andreceiving messages, be they verbal, written, or signs.Today, using various modes of the internet, there aremultiple means and forms of what some would callcommunication which I don't. What takes place with theinternet often is contact not communication.

Perhaps the single biggest problem with communicationis the illusion that because I have contacted a person, communication has inevitably happened. Such is not thecase. Using the internet in communication robs us ofimportant elements in communication - tone andintonation are impossible to pick up, and body languageis impossible to detect. The best and most successfulcommunication is face to face. Here there has to bemutual trust and respect between those communicating. For the very word communication means to share.

So at recess put your iPhone in your pocket, look yourfriends in the eye, talk to them and listen - then there iscommunication, and a deepening of friendship!

From the Pastoral Care TeamLast week we were fortunate to be hosted by St Patrick’sCollege in the final round of AIC Rugby and Football for 2017.As part of their celebrations for the day, there was a strongemphasis on the social awareness of Domestic Violence asa pertinent issue within Australian communities. This fact was

    3

  • also highlighted by Archbishop Coleridge in his recentfortnightly publication for schools.

Talking to your young man about issues such as domesticviolence and violence against women are important aspects offamily life. The Domestic Violence Resource Centre of Victoria(website available below) nominates the importance ofeducating about respectful relationships as a key ingredient tothis successful education.

Blurred Minds – Save The Date:

During Term 3, students in Year 10 will participate in an alcoholprevention program developed in partnership by BrisbaneCatholic Education and Griffith University. The half dayimmersion will allow students to explore their understandingof alcohol, the short and long-term implications of its use andtheir legal responsibilities in relation to the use of alcohol. Theparent session is being supported by the Parents and FriendsAssociation who will assist with the running of the evening. Theparent evening will cover:

All Year 10 families are asked to please save thedate: August 8, 6:30pm.

An email and RSVP will follow in the coming weeks with furtherinformation.

    Student Anxiety:

Student anxiety is a noted issue amongst teens and youngerstudents across the community. Often, students who sufferanxiety can have their condition heightened by a break fromschool or the holidays. This can make a return to school moredifficult and sometimes lead to school refusal.

With the school holidays fast approaching, it may be importantfor families to consider strategies to make the transition back toschool a less complicated process.

Healthy Families, a division of the Beyond Blue organisationoffers the following advice for families in their preparation for areturn to school for anxious students:

    For Greccio Students:

    For Assisi Students:

The same benefits of setting a routine apply whether you’refive, 15 or 50. Encourage your teen to take responsibility forgetting back into the swing of things the week before schoolstarts, which unfortunately means an end to any late-night Xboxmarathons.

Help your young person set some realistic, achievable goals forthe term.

Talk through any issues or fears they might have – whetherthese are about friends, grades or teachers. Instead of focusingon hypothetical ‘what ifs’, try and steer them towards ‘whatis’…and what they can do to change the situation.

Have a couple of practice runs at getting to school together, especially if your young person is going to be using publictransport on their own. They’re not going to want you crampingtheir style when school starts, so make sure they’re feelingconfident about doing the trip solo.

Parenting Tip of The Week – Teach EmotionalUnderstanding:

As boys begin to understand their sensitive side and whatemotions mean for them, it may become easier for them totalk about their feelings. By teaching them about emotions, explaining what emotions mean and how they look forothers, may help them to understand their own emotionsand regulate their own outbursts.

    Mr Ben Lowrie

    FormationDear Padua Families

    • Increase parent-child communication about alcohol

    • Raise awareness about the roles that parents play inadolescent’s alcohol use

    • To inform parents of their legal responsibilities when itcomes to adolescents and alcohol consumption

    • Provide best practice advice and guidance skills toassist parents

    • Provide parents with the knowledge and confidenceon how to use the supporting materials (e.g. onlineresources) independently.

    • Get back into the school-day routine at least a weekearly – waking up, eating and going to bed at regulartimes.

    • Get your child involved in planning out their lunchesand snacks for the first week back.

    • For anxious kids, plenty of detail can be calming. Talkthrough the steps of getting to their classroom: "Andthen we put our bag away; we say hi to our friends;we move to our play area...etc"

    • Stick to familiar routines as much as possible. Try tohave a calm evening and allow more time to settlebefore bedtime if your child is feeling excited ornervous about school.

    • Help your child pack their bag the night before. Avisual checklist can help them remember what theyneed to take. Lay out their clothes so everything’sready for the morning.

    • Allow some extra time to get ready on day one soyou’re not rushing.

  • This week Padua commemorates the Feast Day of St Anthonyof Padua, our College Patron. St Anthony was a gifted studentand preacher. Legend has it that St Anthony was such a brilliantpreacher that even the fish of the sea wanted to listen to himwhen men did not! Inspired by the life of the Franciscan Friars,St Anthony decided to join them, already being a member of theAugustinian Order (Villanova’s loss I guess!). Shipwreck, illnessand cynics, St Anthony won the respect of everyone he met. This week we acknowledge the teacher and friar who we knowas Anthony of Padua!

    Let us pray:

Loving God,Source of all blessing, may we all come to knowyour wisdom more deeply in our hearts, and to live out this wisdom in each moment of our lives.

We pray for our school communitythat we might seek to live out the examplethat St Anthony of Padua is to us all –a person with a passion for preachingand a love for all that he met.

May the same spirit that inspired St Anthonybe in everything we do as a school communityblessed by his name.

We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.
