NORWECO’S TRAVALAIR®

SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT

The Norweco Travalair plant operates on the ExtendedAeration principle using microscopic organisms, in thepresence of oxygen, to destroy organic compounds inthe sewage.

First incoming sewage passes through a conditioningdevice that removes untreatable objects and preventsthem from entering the aeration chamber. Pre-treatment may be accomplished by using a com-minutor, bar screen or trash trap. Trash traps areholding tanks used to settle out untreatable objects, bar screens merely screen incoming sewage andcomminutors grind and screen the sewage beforepassing it to the second phase of treatment.

After pre-treatment the conditioned wastewater entersthe aeration chamber of the plant where the bulk ofthe organic compounds are eliminated. Norweco’sTravalair aeration chamber is designed to hold thewastewater for twenty-four hours while aerobic bac-teria, present in the chamber, destroy all organicmaterial. To obtain such complete treatment in justtwenty-four hours it is necessary to provide just theright environment for the bacteria. This is accom-plished by the controlled introduction of oxygen intothe chamber. Norweco’s unique Evenair diffusers aredesigned just for this purpose. They are installed inthe bottom of the chamber to provide even distri-bution of oxygen into the aeration tank. Stimulatedby the abundant supply of oxygen the bacteria multi-ply rapidly and are thoroughly mixed with the tankcontents to insure complete oxidation of all organicmaterial.

After twenty-four hours in the aeration chamber theliquid flows into the settling chamber. Settling isprovided to remove the small particles suspended inthe liquid so the purified effluent may be dischargedfrom the plant. The lower sidewalls of the chamberare slanted to form a hopper. As the suspendedparticles settle toward the bottom they are guidedinto a small area in the center of the hopper by theTravalair scraper assembly. Here the particles arepicked up by the Travalair pump and returned to theaeration chamber for final treatment. This process ofremoving the small suspended particles from the liquidleaves only a clear, highly treated water at the top ofthe chamber. This treated liquid flows over the edgeof the effluent weir and returns to the environment.

TRAVALAIR®

A Unique New Concept By NorwecoFeaturing

CONTINUOUS SURFACE SKIMMINGCONTINUOUS SLUDGE PUMPING

CONTINUOUS SLUDGE COLLECTION

Norweco’s unique Travalair unit operates automatical-ly. It travels from end to end in the settling chambercontinuously pumping settled sludge back to the aera-tion chamber. At the same time a surface skimmingsystem, installed as an integral part of the Travalairunit, continuously and automatically cleans the surfaceof the settling tank. A squeegee, connected to thelower portion of the Travalair unit, scrapes the slantedsidewalls of the hopper and eliminates accumulation ofsludge in the bottom of the tank. This exclusive featurecompletely eliminates manual hopper scraping. Itsaves the operators time - and the owners money.

Operation and maintenance costs are greatly reducedbecause the Travalair unit may be completely servicedat grade. The Travalair drive unit is installed in aweatherproof cabinet at the end of the settling tank. Notank pumping is required - no complicated mechanicaldevices are installed inside the tank. All periodic main-tenance and lubrication can be completed quickly andefficiently by a serviceman without the need for com-plicated disassembly of equipment or special tools.

NT. . . UNEQUALED DOUBLE SEALBEAM CONSTRUCTIONPre-cast wall sections with Norweco’s doubleseal beam insure a positive tank seal and ruggedstructural stability. A reinforced pre-cast sealbeam is installed to lock together adjoining wallsections. A primary seal is established byusing a synthetic sealing strip. As an addedfeature - a secondary seal of grout is installedin the groove after the primary seal. The beamitself provides structural stability that isunmatched by poured in place concrete orsteel tanks.

PRE-CAST GUIDE RAILCommon only to the Travalair system - iteliminates the need for a poured foundationslab in the excavation prior to tank installation. All sidewalls of the plant are erected on pre-castguide rails. Then the finished floor for thetank is poured inside, thus eliminating theproblem of leaky seals between sidewalls andfoundation slabs. In addition, the poured flooris provided as a standard part of the Travalairplant, eliminating the extra trouble and addedexpense required for a conventional foundationslab.

PROGRESS THROUGH SERVICE SINCE 1906

LIFT-RAIL® PUMPING STATIONSFeaturing guide rails and telescopic hoist with winch for rapid pump removal andinspection. Available to handle any pumping application - installed and ready to operatein less than a week. Controls are installed at ground level in a weatherproof enclosure.

MODULAIR® WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTSFor semi-commercial applications - 1,500 to 100,000 GPD. Tanks are precast concretecovered with galvanized metal grating. Equipment is factory assembled and tested.Ideal for small subdivisions, factories, schools, shopping centers, etc.

SINGULAIR® HOME TREATMENT PLANTSIndividual home wastewater treatment systems for use in non-sewered suburban andrural areas. Norweco SINGULAIR plants automatically reduce all household waste-water to a clear, odorless effluent in just 24 hours.

SERVICE

A one year service program is included with the

purchase of a Travalair Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The policy includes periodic inspections during the

first year and detailed operating reports are filed

with the Health Department during this period.

Bi-weekly inspections are made by a Norweco

serviceman during the first six to eight weeks of

plant operation. These “start-up” inspections

insure that the plant is adjusted to operate at peak

efficiency and train the operator regarding routine

operation and maintenance of the system.

Once the “start-up” portion of the program is

completed our servicemen will continue to inspect

the plant at bi-monthly intervals for the remainder

of the first year. Norweco offers a number of

service policies that provide continuing plant super-

vision and maintenance after the first year.
