1 ASSUMPTIONS
Perforing a physical-to-virtual 4P2V5 igration of a virtualiation candidate re9uires that Microsoft:
$yste Center Virtual Machine Manager 4VMM5 2008 and the first indo!s $erver: !ith indo!s
$erver yper-V; host "e installed and operating correctly.
%n addition' the follo!ing assuptions are ade<
P2V igrations !ill proceed only !hen the custoer provides approval.
Any server that !ill "e igrated !ill not "e in use "y end users.
Any server that is igrated !ill "e iediately tested and "rought online in production as a
virtual achine unless other!ise agreed to prior to the igration start. Microsoft !ill assist the custoer' "ut the custoer !ill perfor the igration.
A custoer-approved "ac&up process has "een perfored' and disaster recovery procedures
have "een prepared in case the igration is not successful.

2 SCENARIO TOPOLOGY
hen going through this scenario' you use VMM on the physical server naed $CVMM-$V(' !hich
acts as the VMM host. =ou use VMM to igrate the physical server naed Test-$V( to a virtual
achine that is hosted on Virtual-$V(. The follo!ing figure sho!s the scenario topology.
Note
hen you perfor the P2V conversion' the sie of the virtual achine that you create can "e e9ual to the sie
of the physical achine that you started !ith>if a fi6ed dis& is used for the Virtual ard 1is& 4V15. =ou ust
therefore ensure that the host coputer has enough space to accoodate the virtual achine.

3 USING VMM 2008 TO CONVERT A PHYSICAL SERVER
TO A VIRTUAL SERVER
VMM allo!s you to convert a physical server to a virtual server. The physical server re9uireents are<
Microsoft indo!s: 2000 $erver $P? or later 4@2-"it5
indo!s $erver 200@ $P or later 4@2-"it and B?-"it5
indo!s $erver 2008 or later' !ithout the yper-V role ena"led 4@2-"it and B?-"it5
indo!s Vista: $P or later 4@2-"it and B?-"it5
indo!s /P $P@ or later 4@2-"it and B?-"it5
To convert a server to a virtual machine:
. )n the VMM server' open the VMM adinistrator console.
2. *ro any!here in the Hosts vie!' select Convert physical server fro the Virtual Machine
Manager section of the ctions enu. hich server you select does not atter in this step
"ecause the destination host !ill "e selected later.

0. Ad#ust the V1 sie as you !ant' "ut note that this value can only "e increased or left at thedefault sie. %f you !ant to iniie the dis& space re9uired on the destination host for the ne!
V1 file' clic& 'ynamic in the VH' Type list. 1oing so !ill cause the igration process to create a
V1 file #ust large enough to contain the data that is currently on the physical source server
partition. As the data sie on the ne! virtualied server increases over tie' the V1 file !ill gro!
accordingly. Ee a!are that even if the ne! dynaic V1 file is su"stantially saller than the V1
sie value assigned' the virtual dis& could gro! to the full capacity of the V1 file. %t is iportant to
consider this fact !hen selecting target host dis&s that have less availa"le space than the
a6iu sie of a dynaic V1 file.. To display the online and offline conversion options' clic& the Conversion +ptions "utton. +nline
conversion is the default selection. hen the appropriate values have "een assigned' clic& Ne$t.
