March 5 - Father Martin Grassel, OSB is the curator at the Benedictine Monastery in Mount Angel. His presentation to the Serra Club concentrated primarily on the decision of the monks at the abbey to start a brewery. The St. Benedict Abbey in Mount Angel is a self-contained and self-supported community of religious men. In the past the abbey supported itself primarily by operating a tree farm and a dairy, performing pastoral work in three parishes, and raising money through donations. However the tree farm has not been producing substantial revenue and the dairy is no longer operational. Twenty years ago the abbey considered starting a brewery and the thought has returned. The monks will emphasize how the beer is brewed. The labels will integrate the St. Benedict icon and, in keeping with monastic tradition, a percentage of the profits will be given to other North Pacific non-profit organizations. Their product will only be available at the abbey. The goals of the undertaking are to generate needed revenue and to promote Christian values in the world around us by having bottles which will emphasize Benedictine values.

Feb 19 - Father Mike Biewend was our guest speaker sharing his vocation story and his mother’s influence. He said there were 3 things in his life that he did not want to do: 1) Be a Priest; 2) Be in the military; 3) Live in Oregon! But you don’t tell God what to do!! Both his mom and dad were instrumental in his vocation decision. They handled the vocation decision in their own unique way. He had two older brothers and a twin sister. He fully expected his brother to respond to the call of a priestly vocation. But in 1971, this was not a popular thing to do. He was the one who kept getting the pull from God to be a priest. He knew what his mom wanted him to do. She wanted him to apply for college. She wanted him to pursue a secular career, get married, and give her grandchildren. When he tentatively decided to go to the seminary, he was hoping he would be thrown out. God was going to have to make it happen! But, you do not tell God what to do. Finally he decided to attend the Los Angeles Diocesan Seminary. As the time approached, his mom continued to ask “are you sure you want to do this? You are going to be lonely.” He knew it was going to be hard for her but she seemed to be letting go. When she took him to the seminary, she said “I give you my son”. WOW! Six months later he had a real crisis and felt he could not continue. He called home and asked his mom to come pick him up. She said “no!” She said “Do not write - no communication for two weeks. After two weeks we will honor your decision.” She knew how miserable he was, but she taught him a valuable lesson “Wait and See!” He shared this example to show how she supported him throughout his profession. When he was ordained he asked his mom and twin sister, Mary, to vest him. They were his biggest supporters! His mom presented a chalice to him at ordination inscribed with “This is my beloved son with whom I am well

SERRA CLUB HOSTS PORTLAND ARCHDIOCESE SEMINARIAN DINNER

Serran’s Affirm Calls to Religious Vocations – The Portland Serra Club recently hosted their annual Seminarian Appreciation Dinner on March 1st at St Patrick Church in downtown Portland. This dinner honors Portland Archdiocese seminarians and their families. Serrans and Seminarians gathered in a casual atmosphere to give encouragement and support to not only Seminarians in responding to their respective calls to the priesthood, but to the Serrans for their steadfast support for religious vocations. The dinner was well attended and everyone had a wonderful time.
