Welcome to the OzRoamer 2015 Awards Special Edition Magazine. Over 45 vehicles in 11 categories exhaustively tested with bothobjective and subjective parameters, throughout the year by our experienced panel of writers. Given the success of the last fewyears special editions we have repeated the magazine again this year. This is the most comprehensive award process for 4WD &AWD SUV’s in the country.

Most e-magazines are simply the normal magazine placed online however the format used here at OzRoamer e-magazine isspecifically designed for tablets, e-readers and smart phones. Research shows that the majority of e-magazines are read on one ormore of those pieces of hardware and so the older style magazines just don't work as well. The beauty of this style is that you don’thave to scroll up and down the page to read in columns like a printed magazine. The articles just flow across the page in line withyour normal reading patterns .

2015 has proved to be a bumper year for new releases of 4WD and AWD SUV’s with most manufacturers releasing at least one newmodel or major upgrade. The big news this year has been the wagon versions of the new crop of Ute’s. Mitsubishi, Ford and Toyotahave joined Isuzu and Holden in this a new, highly competitive category where buyers are the real winners.

We announce our winners for the 2015 Awards in 11 categories. Our belief is that buyers have aparticular category they are looking for a vehicle in. What they want is to compare vehicleswithin that category and see which is the best. It’s all very well to declare a ‘4WD COTY’ thatcomes from all market segments however what relevance is that to car buyers? Is a buyer reallygoing to directly compare an Isuzu D Max to a Toyota Landcruiser Sahara? I don't think so! Thatis how we have designed our awards for a number of years now. As usual we are focused onyou, our readers and what makes buying decisions easier for you.

Without doubt, the growth segment in new car sales is the SUV segment. In 2015, SUV’saccounted for around 35.4 per cent of the market, up from 31.7 per cent in 2014. That's one inthree vehicles that now is a SUV. The biggest mover within the segment is the small SUV salesthat grew by a whopping 27.4% in 2015. In contrast, the large SUV section is in continuingdecline.

With total sales of 1,155,408 vehicles, over 400,000 are now SUV’s. The total sales of SUV’s has morethan doubled in the last 10 years. It is also important to note that 3 of the top ten selling vehicles in2015 were Utes - the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton. Utes are now the thirdbiggest category with over 175,000 vehicles registered in 2015.

All this means our Award Special Edition magazine is more important than ever in helping you, the buyer, make educated buyingdecisions and find a car that fits your unique specifications.

In December there seems to be a buzz around the Car Of The Year Awards (COTY), like Christmas carols in shopping malls, theannouncement of annual awards from the motoring magazines and websites also gets earlier each year. In an effort to beateach other we may end up with the situation where the Cars of the Year will be announced in June. I suppose that mixes wellwith Christmas in July.

However it has always struck us here at OzRoamer as just a little strange that COTY winners should be announced before theyear is actually finished. So as we always seem to do things just a little differently here at OzRoamer to give our readersmaximum information and benefit, our awards for 2015 are announced in this issue. This way we can actually assess all relevantvehicles for our awards.

The criteria for our awards is simple:● The vehicle must be currently available for sale to the general public;● The vehicle must meet the criteria for its category;● Final contenders are selected by the panel;● Each vehicle is subjectively and objectively measured against its competitors in the category and the one with the most

points wins;● That the judging criteria reflects real life situations because you our readers buy these vehicles for use in similar situations;● That the awards assist our readers make educated buying decisions; and● Advertising dollars and marketing hype doesn't sway the eventual winners or even the contenders.

Pricing comes from the industry website redbook.com.au with a Sydney 2000 postcode as the standard. The categories , wethink, reflect real world buying decisions. If you feel we have left a worthwhile contender out please let us know for next year.So to the categories and contenders! For the third year in a row the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT has won the prestigious Sport SUV Award from OzRoamer, showingwithout doubt that this represents exactly what the award is all about- prodigious power, luxury interior and true 4WD ability. Thetruly impressive thing about the Grand Cherokee SRT is its balance between power, luxury and price.

Driving the Grand Cherokee SRT is both an aural and tactile delight. It always attracts attention from people passing by. Theexhaust tone also evokes memories of the older pre catalytic converter V8 burble. It is just awesome and I have been known tojust sit in the driveway starting and stopping the SRT simply to listen to the burble. Previously I have been approached by a totalstranger who does the same with his SRT. It’s great to know there are other enthusiasts out there that makes my idiosyncrasiesseem normal.

Externally the SRT presents an imposing muscular frame, especially in black and features include a brawnier black front grill withchrome inserts, black background adaptive bi-xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights and exclusive bonnet bulge.

Internally the Grand Cherokee SRT exudesluxury and comfort. There is achoice of an exclusive leather interior intwo distinctive colours combinations –Black Nappa leather with perforatedsuede and light slate grey accent stitchingas standard and all-new Laguna leatherwith perforated suede in Sepia with Silveraccent stitching as an option. Both leathertrim combinations are matched withcarbon fibre trim adorning the instrumentpanel and doors.

The SRT interior is further distinguishedby a unique heated three-spoke steeringwheel with a race-inspired flat bottomand more pronounced, ergonomicallyefficient paddle shifters, that I have to saywork well given my hatred of theseadornments.

The high performance Nappa leather SRT monogrammed front seats are heated and ventilated and exceptionally comfortable.Combine the electronic seat controls with the height and reach adjustable steering wheel and it's easy to find a perfect drivingposition.

Luxury features include the Uconnect system with 8.4-inch touchscreen and the new 7.0-inch TFT colour customerconfigurable instrument cluster display. The SRT is available with command view roof and a state-of-the-art 19-speaker, 825-wattHarman Kardon surround sound audio system as an option package.

The true four wheel drive ability that Jeep is legendary for comes from an exclusive-to-SRT, Quadra-Trac active on-demand four-wheel-drive system. The Grand Cherokee SRT also features Brake Traction Control System (BTCS) on the front differential and arear Electronic Limited Slip Differential (ELSD).

The Selec-Track system is fitted exclusively to the Grand Cherokee SRT model. This system interacts with several differentsystems (stability control, active damping, transmission shift strategy, transfer case torque proportioning, Electronic Limited SlipDifferential performance, throttle control and cylinder de-activation) to automatically tune the dynamics of the vehicle accordingto the drivers’ habits and current driving conditions.

The driver can manually choose between the following dynamic modes – Auto, Sport, Track, Tow and Snow – for specific drivingperformances. On the new SRT model, software improvements to Selec-Track further distinguish the five dynamic modes, enabling drivers to choose a vehicle setting that more closely meets their requirements and ambient conditions. Drivers will findthe torque split change in Track Mode provides a vehicle that is more responsive from mid-corner to exit and one that deliversfaster lap times at their favourite track.

The Grand Cherokee SRT is fitted with the proven and powerful 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine equipped with Fuel Saver Technology, which produces 344 kW of power at 6,250 rpm and 624 Nm of torque at 4,100 rpm to deliver benchmark SRT performancethrough an 8 speed Tiptronic transmission. It sounds AWESOME! I must admit to sitting in the driveway continually starting theengine just to hear the V8 burble. I must have been deprived as a child.

This powerplant will propel the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT from 0-100kmh in 4.9 seconds , has a maximum speed of 255kmh andAgain, if driven sensibly, will consume fuel at an ADR rate of 14.0l/100k. That will raise substantially with enthusiastic driving.Fuel Saver Technology on the Hemi V8 engine optimises fuel efficiency and reduces emissions by alternating between a four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and a V8 mode when more power is in demand. However while it may sip frugally onthe highway, if you bury the right foot the fuel disappears at an alarming rate.

Also for Grand Cherokee and exclusive to the SRT model is the Launch Control system, which has been paired to a new eightspeed automatic transmission. Launch Control mimics a professional driver’s inputs to optimise the SRT’s performance by bring-ing engine, transmission, driveline, stability control and suspension in line for a textbook launch. Controlled by a button locatedbehind the new T-handle shifter on the centre console, it delivers enhanced and more consistent straight-line acceleration.

In addition to its standard safety equipment, including Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Electronic Rollover Mitigation (ERM),ABS with off-road calibration, Brake Traction Control System (BTCS) and seven airbags (advanced multi-stage driver and frontpassenger, front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags for front and rear occupants, driver knee airbag). The Grand Cherokee SRToffers upgraded Forward Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation, Blind Spot Monitoring , Adaptive Cruise Control, ParkView rearback up camera with dynamic grid, ParkSense park assist system and new Selec-Speed Control with Hill Ascent Control and HillDescent Control, assisting the driver climbing and descending steep grades.

The Grand Cherokee SRT is one of the few vehicles that I would go for a drive 2 or 3 times a day simply for the fun of it. The SRTis hypnotic. It entices you to experience its pleasures and embraces you like a lover when you do.

Driving the SRT is an experience right from sitting in the Nappa leather seats and hearing that exhaust burble upon start up,through to powering through a series of bends where the agility and dynamics of the suspension belie its bulky proportions. Doyourself a favour and visit a dealer, start up the engine and you will fall in lust with the beast; drive one and you will fall in love.At a RDAP of $91,984 it is starting to become a little expensive but still represents reasonable value. As mentioned, what you havehere is a sports SUV that has true 4WD ability, prodigious power, luxury comfortable interior at a reasonable price. Not to men-tion the aural delights of that melodic 6.4L Hemi V8. Nothing comes close for the now arguably growing price. The Jeep GrandCherokee SRT V8 is a worthy winner of the 2015 OzRoamer Sports SUV of the Year now for the third year in a row.

Launched earlier in 2015, the 5th generation Mitsubishi Triton Exceed is now a two time winner of the Dual Cab Ute Award. Thisyear has been the closest in terms of competition and in fact the Triton won by just one point. There was strong competition fromFord Ranger, Isuzu D Max and last year’s winner the Colorado LTZ, with Holden’s decision to reduce the specification level of theLTZ, namely leather front seats etc. seeing it lose its crown in a very competitive segment.

The all new Triton design looks way better in the flesh than in photos, keeping the distinctive grill and front end but the sideshave a subtle high waistline and lower curve. The rear loses the slab back from the last model and gains crisp lines. The Australianinfluence is strong with customer feedback sessions and many kilometres of local testing showing through in the designfunctionality, engine’s torque characteristics, high speed stability on gravel surfaces and overall towing performance and stability.

More so than almost any other vehicle, the humble Ute - an Australian invention - has to suit a multitude of purposes, from awork horse in the mines, hardworking trade or farm Ute, comfortable family 4WD to heavy duty tow vehicle the Ute, design has

many divergent outcomes required.Perhaps the hardest of these is thesuspension and engine transmissioncombination. The characteristics that makea good riding and handling on road Uteare almost opposed to those that make agood tow vehicle and far removed fromthose that make a robust off road vehicle.

Some Utes get it right for on road handlingbut are just crap off road, like the Amarok, and some are better suited to off roadwork but crap on road. Some, like theRanger, Colorado, BT 50 and D Max,achieve a good balance.

Well at the risk of starting a debateamongst the ‘experts’, the Triton isprobably the best balanced handling Uteavailable on the market today.

It is certainly excellent on dirt roads, on sand and on the highway. We also had a chance to test the articulation off road and againit feels as though it equals the best in class there as well. That’s a big wrap coming from me as I am often critical of the balance ofUte ride and handling.

Inside, the new model brings with it front and rear seats that have been specifically redesigned and are very comfortable andthere is plenty of rear seat room (thanks to the clever ‘J’ design), a dash that is more upmarket, modern, stylish and easy to useand read. In fact, that is the catchphrase for the interior as a whole; easy to use and comfortable. With a height and reachadjustable small leather steering wheel and enhanced seat travel, it’s easy to find that all important comfortable driving position.Like all the Utes, the Triton has moved to a more sophisticated car like interior.

The 2016 Triton range is powered by a new 2.4-litre MIVEC turbo diesel engine. It achieves 133kW of power at 3500 rpm and430Nm peak torque at 2500 rpm. While this is lower than some of its competitors, the key here is that the majority of that torquecomes in at around 1500 rpm with another hit at 1750 rpm and the delivery makes for relaxed and economical driving. The Exceed comes with a new 5 speed auto. Mitsubishi could have taken the opportunity to introduce a 6 speed auto box, but thetransmission works great with the low down torque delivery of the engine and fuel economy is frugal at around 7.5L/100km.

Another key improvement is the throttle response - it’s excellent! This was evident on the sand of Fraser Island and StocktonBeach, on the fire trails through the Watagan Mountains and equally on the highway. The other related area is towing. While the3.1t tow limit is below the headline figures spouted by its competitors, the real world situation is that it is more than adequate. This, coupled with a generous Gross Combination Mass rating of 5,885 kg and low kerb mass, provides the Triton with a practical, real world balance between towing capacity and vehicle payload.

The Australian market presents a unique challenge for engineering towing requirements due to the vast range of towingsituations and load types that need to be catered for. Key attributes of new Triton have contributed to the new model’soutstanding towing performance. These include engine torque delivery, auto transmission calibration and throttle response toprovide strong, composed towing performance across a vast range of situations. Also complementing Triton’s towingperformance is the new steering system, which enables Triton to handle challenging towing manoeuvres with ease. TrailerStability Assist has been fitted to all models as a standard safety feature. This system, in combination with the new, well-balancedsuspension set up, ensures Triton delivers a stable and secure tow vehicle package that’s suitable for towing a variety of loads.

Let’s turn our attention to off road. The Triton has always been a great performer off road, being robust, honest and reliable.Exceed models are fitted with Mitsubishi’s new generation Super Select 4WD II system, which offers four driving modes includinglocked 4WD mode. Key benefits include better fuel economy and quietness in 2WD mode and Triton’s interesting and clever40/60 front/rear torque distribution in full time 4WD mode for superior cornering stability.

Exceed models also gain an electronic rear diff lock feature as standard. The new Triton has a best in class approach angle of 30degrees and departure angle of 22 degrees. The manoeuvrability of the Triton off road is enhanced by the tight turning circle of11.8m and a lock to lock ratio of only 3.8 turns, making it surprisingly nimble off road and on tight trails.

Triton’s new flagship model Exceed offers a full array of standard equipment. Highlights include automatic transmission withracing-style steering wheel mounted paddle shifters, electronic diff lock, One Touch start with smart key, dusk sensingheadlights, rain-sensing automatic intermittent wipers, 4-way adjustable electronic driver’s seat, HID headlights, LED DaylightRunning Lamps, front fog lamps, side steps, sports bar, leather trim steering wheel and gear shift, dual zone air conditioning andpremium audio system with 7-inch colour touch screen, CD player, SD card and satellite navigation, Bluetooth hands-free withvoice control and audio streaming.

2016 Triton models have an official 5-star ANCAP safety rating. Triton’s exceptional safety performance is underpinned byMitsubishi’s proven RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body technology. Passive safety features include driver and frontpassenger SRS airbags, side and curtain airbags and driver’s knee airbag, while seat belts are fitted with pre-tensioners and forcelimiters. Other features include Active Stability and Traction Control or ASTC, Mitsubishi’s Emergency Stop Signal function, brake override system which uses sensors to recognise when both accelerator and brake pedals are being pressed at the sametime and gives priority to the brake system, and a rear view camera is a standard feature on Exceed.

As mentioned, this award was extremely close with a number of vehicles one or two points behind. Any of the top 5 utes whichinclude Ford Ranger, Isuzu D MAX, Holden Colorado and Mazda BT-50 could be the winner with minor adjustments. That is howcompetitve this segment is. In fact any of those 5 Utes would make their buyer happy. However, at the end of the day, the valuepacked Mitsubishi Triton Exceed though is a worthy winner of the 2015 OzRoamer Dual Cab Ute Award.

2015 was a busy year for the expanded market segment for 4WD’s based on a Ute chassis. Every key manufacturer in the Utemarket now has a wagon variant. The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a little different in that it initially has been launched as a 5 seatwagon only. This gives it a competitive advantage over the competitors and has won it the 2015 OzRoamer 4WD Under $60,000Award.

Based on the newly launched Triton, itself an award winner this year, the range topping Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Exceed is packedfull of features and safety, combined with legendary off road ability and a large boot area, excellent Gross Combination Massbetween payload and towing capacity and outstanding value for money. It is ideally suited to 4WD enthusiasts, adventurousfamilies as well as the Grey Nomads who like to tow.

Externally, the Pajero Sport follows the new dynamic styling theme which features bumpers that wrap around the front from theleft and right guards and are bordered by a bright silver garnish. From the side, the Pajero Sport is sharply contoured by a crease

running through the front guard and rearquarter panel and taillight. Integrated roofrails, 8-inch alloy wheels, side sill garnishand side step reinforce Pajero Sport’s boldoff-road SUV image.

The front styling is further enhanced byLED headlights and Daylight RunningLamps, which function as dimming positionlamps when the headlights are on.

The rear design is both sporty and stylishwith iconic LED rear combination lampsthat have a unique vertical design, which iseven more striking when illuminated.

Unfortunately, to me the rear end evokesmemories of a Lancer wagon. This doeshowever provide plenty of height andcover from the tail gate.

Internally, the Pajero Sport cocoons the driver and front passenger with wrap around dash and centre console. The sleek style iscomplimented by the electric handbrake and off road mode switch. The two dial dash with centre MFD is clear and easy to read, the sleek leather steering wheel - that is both height and reach adjustable - allows the driver to find a comfortable position alongwith the heated electrically adjustable drivers seat. The seats are very comfortable for long drives. Rear passengers have adequatehead, shoulder, knee and leg room with heavily padded seats. Cargo space varies from 673L to a massive 1,624L capacity.

Mitsubishi’s new Smartphone link Display Audio (SDA) enables compatible smartphone connectivity through Android Auto andApple Car Play systems. Users can connect to selected apps, including navigation, stored on their smartphone through thesystem’s 7-inch colour touch screen or via voice control. The system also allows users to make calls or send SMS messages handsfree. SDA is a standard feature on all Pajero Sport models. While this makes use of the latest technology it also creates a problemfor navigation in areas of poor or no phone reception, somewhere 4WD enthusiasts would be quite often I would imagine.

The Pajero Sport Exceed is also fitted with Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB), along with traditional AM/FM tuner. There is a rear seatentertainment unit with DVD player and high definition 9-inch roof-mounted colour display and 8-speaker audio. Other featuresinclude keyless entry with push button start, speed sensing auto door locking, dusk sensing headlamps, rain sensing wipers, electrochromatic rear view mirror, dual zone A/C, leather interior trim and Multi around Monitor System,

The Pajero Sport is powered by the new 2.4L DiD engine from the Triton but combines with a new 8 speed AT that maximises theengine characteristics as well as minimising fuel usage. The EURO 5 compliant diesel engine produces maximum torque of430Nm at 2500rpm, while peak power is 133kW at 3500rpm. Like the Triton, most of the torque comes in at a low 1500rpm thatenhances everyday driving and towing ability. The engine transmission combination is responsive and adaptive yet frugal.

Another feature is the Super Select II 4WD system which is operated via a selector dial in the centre console. Super Select II allowsthe driver to switch between four drive modes and centre differential. The system has four operating modes – 2H, 4H, 4HLc and4LLc – and the driver can change between 2H and 4H at speeds under 100km/h. Off-road Mode is a new terrain control systemdeveloped exclusively for Pajero Sport. It provides the driver with four driving modes: Gravel, Mud/Snow, Sand and Rock. It worksa treat and has been developed and tested over the harshest of conditions. There is also a rear diff lock.

The Pajero Sport’s handling and ride balance comes from its redesigned suspension geometry and upgraded suspensioncomponents. The suspension is a double wishbone with coil spring set up at the front and 3-link rigid axle with coil springsuspension at the rear. At the front, a larger diameter stabiliser bar helps reduce body roll through corners, while front and reardamper rates are re-tuned to improve ride. Rear suspension mount points and the structure of the lateral rod mounts, have beenchanged to improve vehicle straight line and mid-corner stability.

The Pajero Sport has long stroke suspension for superior off-road performance. A class leading 11.2m turning circle helps thenimble and tractable handling with surprisingly high levels of ride comfort. It also boasts a clever front-end design thatdramatically decreases water splash over the windscreen when driving through water.

Awarded the 5 Star ANCAP Safety rating, the Pajero Sport features a comprehensive passive safety architecture based onMitsubishi’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) impact safety body and seven SRS airbag arrangement. This includes SRSairbags fitted in front driver and passenger, side, side curtain and driver’s knee positions.

In addition, the Pajero Sport has a range of active safety features which are fast becoming standard on passenger SUVs. A rearview camera, reversing sensors and speed sensing auto door locking feature are fitted to every Pajero Sport, while Exceedmodels are equipped with the following advanced safety technologies: Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Blind Spot Warning(BSW) , Ultrasonic misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS), Multi around Monitor System (MMS), ABS with EBD is fitted, alongwith Emergency Stop Signal, Active Stability and Traction Control, Hill Start Assist, and Hill Descent Control, Trailer StabilityAssist and an Electric Park Brake.

Mitsubishi has designed a winner in the new Pajero Sport. As mentioned, it is packed full of safety, innovative technology andluxury features, comes in a stylish design, has full 4WD capability and can tow what most will want to as well as take theluggage. All this comes for the outstanding value of $57,755 RDAP. Its a big ask to win this award in its first year, especially as itwas only launched in December but the value proposition makes it difficult to pass up.

Deservingly, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Exceed is the winner of the OzRoamer 2015 4WD under $60,000 Award.

It’s now three years since the newly released Jeep Grand Cherokee was launched onto the market and each year it has won thecoveted OzRoamer 4WD Over $60,000 Award. This is proof that they designed a winner first up. Now with a 5 star ANCAP safetyrating, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland remains feature packed with the smooth V6 diesel, 8 speed auto transmission and re-tains the legendary off road capability, all packaged in a stylish body.

While externally it doesn't fit the mould of a rugged 4WD, it retains legendary Jeep styling with a squat seven slot front grill alongwith some Overland specific body-colour design cues including the lower fascia trim on the front and rear of the vehicle.

The first thing you notice when you sit inside is the contrasting stitched-leather instrument panel and seats. The leather seats areexceptionally comfortable with 8 way electrically adjustable front seats that also have 4 way adjustable lumbar support. The three

spoke, thick rimmed, heated leatherwrapped steering wheel has a top woodenrim and is electronically height and reachadjustable. Your driving position is alsolocked into memory for convenience.

Being 6'5" tall I found that whilecomfortable in the drivers seat I wouldhave appreciated a bit more slideadjustment, as the foot brake gets in theway especially as the left foot has imitedspace. All seats are heated, just the thingfor cold winter mornings. The front seatsare ventilated for those hot summer days.

The dash has two large dials and a new7-inch user-configurable multi-view displaywith colour TFT liquid crystal technology. The easy-to-use instrument cluster displaysthe basic information a driver needs.

The cluster can be configured 100 different ways. Navigation, speed, audio and fuel economy info, as well as useful informationprovided by on-board Jeep systems, such as Selec-Terrain modes, can all be displayed in the 7-inch screen.

The centre stack houses a new Uconnect Infotainment System and SatNav system with a 8.4" touchscreen. The Uconnect 8.4system is designed to facilitate a fully integrated infotainment system including GPS, voice recognition functionality and addition-al entertainment features all built into a single hardware platform.

Rear passengers are well catered for with adequate head, shoulder and knee room unless there is a tall driver. There is plenty ofboot space and with the 60/40 rear seats folded flat there is an enormous area available.

Above your head is the CommandView dual-pane panoramic sunroof, which is comprised of two glass panels. The full-powerfront panel opens rearward, while the rear panel, which is fixed, allows light and open viewing for second-row passengers. Thesystem comes complete with a full length power sun shade.

The heart of the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland is the combination diesel engine and Quadra-Drive II 4wd system. The new 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine produces 184 kW at 4,000 rpm with 570 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm. This power is delivered through a8 speed ZF automatic. This combination is one of the best in its class.

The Quadra-Drive II four-wheel drive system features a rear Electronic Limited-slip Differential (ELSD) and the Quadra-Drive IIdelivers prodigious tractive capability and off-road performance. The core of the system is the central transfer case and anelectronically controlled clutch pack for active torque distribution.

On dry pavement and in normal tractive conditions, the central transfer case splits 48 per cent of the available torque to the frontaxle and 52 per cent to the rear axle. In case of slippery surfaces, the system automatically redirects engine torque between thefront and rear axles based upon real-time driving conditions.

The system also uses electronic controls that multiply traction on the four wheels and help avoid losses of grip in case of suddenacceleration. The system includes 4WD High and 4WD Low ranges, with 4WD Low offering a 2.72 gear reduction ratio for extremeoff-road conditions.

Via the rear Electronic Limited-Slip Differential (ELSD), Quadra-Drive II instantly detects rear tyre slip and smoothly distributestorque across the axle. In some cases, the vehicle will anticipate low traction and adjust in order to proactively limit or eliminateslip.

The all-new Selec-Terrain traction control system lets customers choose the setting for the optimum experience on all types ofterrain. This feature electronically coordinates up to 12 different powertrain, braking and suspension systems, including throttlecontrol, transmission shift, transfer case, ASTC and ESC. Easily up there with the best systems available anywhere.

The Grand Cherokee Overland comes standard with the Quadra-Lift Air Suspension system. This is awesome both on and offroad and is a essential item for towing. The Quadra-Lift Air Suspension operates automatically to institute certain ride heightconditions, but can also be adjusted manually by the driver using the console controls. The Quadra-Lift system provides fiveheight settings for optimum ride performance.

Quadra-Lift air suspension adds up to 106 mm of lift supported by four-corner air springs. With the front air dam removed andQuadra-Lift air suspension fitted, the Overlander features a 35.8-degree approach angle, a 29.6-degree departure angle and a23.5-degree rampover angle. No wonder its great off road. The new Grand Cherokee uses an array of sophisticated systems, including Quadra-Lift air suspension, Selec-Terrain traction control and new Selec-Speed Control to achieve on and off roaddynamics that have to be driven to be appreciated.

Standard safety features include ESC, Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM), ABS with off road calibration, ASTC, Brake Traction ControlSystem (BTCS), Trailer-sway Control (TSC) and front-seat passenger seat-belt pretensioners.

The Grand Cherokee Overland offers upgraded Forward Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control,ParkView rear back up camera with dynamic grid, ParkSense park assist system and new Selec-Speed Control with Hill AscentControl and Hill Descent Control, assisting the driver when climbing and descending steep grades. Other standard safety featuresinclude seven airbags, advanced multi-stage driver and front passenger, front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags for front andrear occupants, driver knee airbag and active head restraints that deploy in the event of a rear collision.

Towing with the powerful, torquey V6 Diesel is a breeze with 3500Kg capacity and 350Kg tow ball rating. The standard Quadra-Lift suspension only makes towing heavy items easier. In short it's great for towing just about anything and just do easy.

All up the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland V6 Diesel is a superb 4WD that is stylish, reasonable value for money and awesome offroad as well as comfortable on city streets. For the thrid year in a row the Jeep Grand Cherokee is the winner for this category.

The all new Jeep Cherokee, which was launched in 2014, follows a long and proud history dating back to 1974. The Cherokeediesel is available only in the AWD Limited version and is now a two time winner of the OzRoamer AWD SUV under $60,000award. As the vehicle is basically the same as last year it’s hard to write anything other than praise.

The Jeep Cherokee Limited sits just below the 4WD Trailhawk and at the top of the range of the AWD versions. Externally, theJeep Cherokee style is polarising, especially the interpretation of the traditional 7 slot Jeep Grill. Personally I like it and the overallstyle is like so many other midsized SUV's yet still manages to somehow be distinct as well.

Cutting edge design elements, such as slimline daytime running lights as 'eyebrows' with lower headlights, combine withtraditional DNA elements such as the peaked seven-slot grille, trapezoidal wheel arches and the functional ‘kink’ in the beltline

mated to a tough, durable lower bodyprovide the all-new Jeep Cherokee Limitedwith a commanding road presence.

Internally the Cherokee provides buyerswith a luxurious European feel and cleverdesign. The Cherokee interior is a blend offluid shapes, high-quality soft touchmaterials, innovative colour and materialchoices, precision craftsmanship, state-of-the-art technology and clever features.Truly unlike what we would expect from anAmerican design, but then expected afterthe Grand Cherokee.

The leather seats are comfortable, poweradjustable, heated/ventilated with memoryfunction and despite first impressions, theyare supportive over long hours. In front ofthe driver is a thick rimmed, newlydesigned three-spoke Jeep steering wheelwith audio, voice and speed controls.

The dash harks back to a simpler day when clarity was paramount. The round dials are clear with white on black design and aseven-inch full-colour reconfigurable instrument cluster that allows the driver to enjoy a customised user experience. Theinstrument cluster displays basic information at the drivers fingertips but also allows them to add information they desire - similarto an Apple iPhone. The driver can select from a multitude of information features that can be displayed in the centre of thegauge cluster including turn-by-turn navigation, speed, real-time fuel economy, safety warnings, available Adaptive CruiseControl-Plus, audio information and Jeep-specific features including Selec-Terrain.

The centre stack bezel is inspired by the outline of the front grille of the 1940s Willys Jeep (which incidentally was the first car Iever drove) and continues the design language of its larger sibling, the Grand Cherokee. The 8.4-inch touchscreen multimediacommand centre houses the navigation system and the Uconnect system that allows the driver to control the audio, climatecontrols, heated/ventilated seats and much more from the touchscreen, with additional controls located on the centre stackbelow the touchscreen or with voice commands. A premium Alpine 506-watt sound system is available with nine speakers and asubwoofer. The clever thing is that there is also a wireless charging system for the phone when in the cradle.

Storage is a key feature with a covered top bin located above the centre stack on top of the instrument panel and a huge glovebox that accommodates an iPad. A small storage slot is located between the cup holders and the centre console armrest. Thecentre console hosts the integrated phone docking station, USB and SD ports and auxiliary-power source. The front-passengerseat in the Jeep Cherokee folds flat and offers hidden, in-seat storage by flipping up the passenger seat cushion. Front doors areable to accommodate maps and bottles. Second-row seats recline and move fore/aft 15 centimetres to increase legroom orstorage room as needed. The class-exclusive Jeep Cargo Management System makes the most of the cargo space in the all-newJeep Cherokee. A universal module rack is mounted on the side in the rear cargo area and provides for hooks and a removablegrocery bag.

Safety features, that led to a five star ANCAP safety rating, include both active and passive safety security features, includingParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist – a first for a Chrysler Group vehicle; Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus; Forward CollisionWarning-Plus; LaneSense Departure Warning-Plus; All-speed Traction Control System (ATCS); Antilock brakes (ABS); BrakeTraction-control System (BTCS); Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD); Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Brake-lock DifferentialSystem (BLDS). There is also Electronic roll mitigation, Blind-spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection, ParkView rear backupcamera with dynamic grid lines and dual frontal, side chest and side head airbags (curtains) and a driver knee airbag are standard.Optional equipment and packages include: CommandView dual-pane panoramic sunroof with power sunshade, TechnologyGroup, which includes Advanced Brake Assist, Lane Departure Warning Plus, Auto High Beam Control, Forward CollisionMitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Blind-spot Monitoring and Cross-path Detection, ParkSenseParallel/Perpendicular Park Assist, Electronic Convenenice Group, which includes remote proximity entry and keyless Enter-N-Go,230V auxiliary power outlet and wireless charging pad.

Driving the latest Jeep Cherokee Limited is the 2.0 litre Turbo Diesel 4 cyl engine, which produces 125kW of power and 350Nm oftorque while consuming just 5.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres in the combined cycle. This engine delivers its power through aninnovative 9 speed transmission. This class leading transmission is super smooth and strong enough for the harsh conditions itmay find itself in AWD situations. This is one refined slick transmission. To be clear this combination is simply brilliant.

The standard 4WD system is the Jeep Active Drive11. The Selec-Terrain manages the 4WD system with a simple twist of the dial,to choose the on- and off-road setting for optimal performance. Up to five customised settings are offered: Auto, Snow, Sport,Sand/Mud and Rock. It's easy to use and very effective coordinating the electronics depending on the selection.

While the Cherokee Limited diesel has the 4WD system you should think of it more as an exceptionally capable AWD SUV ratherthan a 4WD like the Trailhawk. On test we drove the Limited over a variety of surfaces, sand dunes, tar roads, loose gravel andsome forest trails. The tracks provided an interesting rather than challenging experience. Throughout, we had the opportunity totry the various applications of Selec-Terrain and all proved competent. For the most part though we just left the Selec-Terrain inauto and drove. The Jeep Cherokee Limited, despite its Alfa underpinnings and SUV styling is great in this type of trail driving.

Once we were on the tar the driving experience was just as satisfying. The diesel engine allowed adequate power and the supersmooth 9 speed transmission provides economy with a number of overdrive gears. The steering was a little light and there was alittle tyre noise at speed but the Jeep Cherokee is probably the quietest car on road in its class. The quietness is extraordinary forthe price range. There are better handling on road AWD SUV's in the class but not by much and they generally cost much more.

Overall, the Jeep Cherokee Limited diesel is actually outstanding. There are few, if any, AWD SUV's that are better off road andfew that are better on road, none that are quieter and even with price increases it represents excellent value. The Jeep CherokeeLimited Diesel is a worthy winner of the OzRoamer AWD SUV under $60,000 Award.

The booming mid-size premium AWD SUV segment is full of a diverse array of offerings from almost all manufacturers andhoning that selection down to just a few is a difficult task. This year, I’m sure, the winner is sure to raise as many questions as itanswers and readers will surely have strong opinions. Launched in early 2014, the winner of the OzRoamer 2015 AWD SUV over$60,000 Award is BMW X4xDrive30d. BMW likes to be different and labels the X4 the first ever Sports Activity Coupé (SAC). Got tolove the marketing people.

With signature BMW X features, unmistakable coupe character, a distinctive design and excellent dynamic ability, the BMWX4xDrive30d introduces the powerful and economical diesel engine that generates 190 kW of power and 560 Nm of torque and isset to build on the success of the X6 by offering a unique vehicle in this segment.

The BMW X4xDrive30d is based on the technical blueprint of the BMW X3 - itself a previous winner of this award - but displays acoupe style, sporting character and a generous level of standard specifications.

Externally the new X4 styling is quitebeautiful. The distinctive front faceguarantees it’s immediately recognisableas a member of the BMW X family. Inprofile, the low coupé-style roof-lineextending into the rear is a distinctivefeature which also clearly sets the BMWX4 apart.

Internally, the X4 is definitely aimed at thefront occupants. A typical BMW cockpitfaces the driver, where every controlelement is angled towards the driver foroptimal ergonomics.

Both front seats are exceptionallycomfortable for long trips. Despite itscoupé-style roof-line, the front seats areonly marginally lower than the X3, so theoccupants still get that elevated drivingposition and feel.

The rear-seat bench has two elegant coupé-style individual seats and although it will fit 3 at a squeeze, it is better suited to twooccupants. There is adequate headroom, shoulder, knee and leg room. Bear in mind that the X4 really is better suited to a couplerather than a family. The BMW X4xDrive30d comes equipped with 40:20:40 split fold rear seats which allows for a flexible luggagecompartment capacity of between 500 and 1,400 litres. A storage compartment package with a range of handy storage andluggage carrying features is also standard.

The heart of the X4xDrive30d is a 3.0 litre, six cylinder engine, with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. Generating 190 kW ofpower and 560 Nm of torque, the BMW X4xDrive30d charges from 0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds, while fuel consumption measuresat 5.9 L/100K. That is outstanding performance and economy.

The BMW X4xDrive30d is fitted with an eight-speed sports automatic transmission - and also includes gear shift paddles on thesteering wheel. The combination of those figures, transmitted through the sports 8 speed automatic transmission and drivingthrough the awesome xDrive means that the X4 has levels of ride handling, performance and economy that is rivaled by few othervehicles. In short, it is awesome to drive.

The peak torque coming in at a lazy 1500 rpm means amazing tractability with an abundance of acceleration on tap at any stage. The sports characteristics of the X4xDrive30d are far in excess of what 99.99% of drivers will ever utilise. It gives the driver a levelof feel and control that probably most buyers wouldn't have experienced before.

Standard features that highlight the dynamic credentials of the BMW X4 include Performance Control and variable sports steering, both of which combine to enable a higher level of dynamic cornering and handling with maximum grip, excellent directionalstability and a very high degree of steering precision as well as comfort when parking.

Other standard features include 19-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels, xLine exterior and interior design scheme, two zone air-conditioning including rear air vents, leather upholstered sports seats with lumbar support and electric adjustment for the frontseats and memory function for the driver, sport leather steering wheel with gear shift paddles, Bi-Xenon headlights with LEDdaytime lights, LED fog lights, Lights package including exterior door handle lighting, USB, Bluetooth with audio streaming, VoiceControl and pairing of multiple phones, Navigation Professional with large 8.8-inch screen and 20GB hard drive for audio files,Intelligent Emergency Call, Teleservices, Cruise Control with braking function, front and rear parking sensors, rear view cameraand automatic tailgate.

The X4xDrive30d also adds Surround View with 360 degree visibility with help from cameras in the exterior mirrors, a wide-anglecamera in front and the Rear View camera, exterior rear view mirrors with anti-dazzle and fold-in function, dual round exhaustpipes, 9-speaker 7-channel HiFi loudspeaker system and Dynamic Damper Control which can adjust the damper characteristics tosuit the driving conditions and road quality and customer preferred settings.

All new BMW X4 models’ maintenance requirements are controlled by BMW’s Condition Based Service (CBS) program whichidentifies the condition of a vehicle based on actual use, realising the full potential of a vehicle and minimising costs.

In addition, BMW service and selected maintenance costs can now be covered by a single, one-off advance payment with BMWService Inclusive (BSI). BSI offers two packages; BMW Service Inclusive Basic provides scheduled servicing cover, while BMWService Inclusive Plus combines scheduled servicing and selected maintenance items. Based on individual lifestyle needs, a yearrange and kilometre option is selected, starting from 3 years/60,000kms. The BSI plan provides a long-term solution enablingcover to be extended and transferred to future vehicles owners before expiry.

Remember that while the X4xDrive30d is technically an AWD SUV, it definitely isn’t designed for virtually any sort of off roaddriving. That is probably why the award will promote a lot of argument amongst readers I am guessing. It is ideally suited totrips to the snow with icy roads, trips to the holiday house or farm and it does allow the driver to tow up to 2000 kg braked andthat is in keeping with it’s sporting activity nature. The engine wont even feel 2000 kg on the back by the way. I have a friendthat owns this vehicle and he regularly tows a trailer with quad bike on it, a smaller boat, sea doos etc. Setting up the vehiclethough to tow should really be done through the BMW dealer and it is expensive. Like all BMW’s the options list is long andexpensive but the base X4xDrive30d is surprisingly good value.

This year’s winner of the OzRoamer 2015 AWD SUV over $60,000 Award, the BMW X4xDrive30d is a worthy winner and we canonly wait with baited breath for the X4xDrive35d next year.

One of the hottest market segments in 2015 is the 4WD Ute based wagons with entrants from Isuzu, Ford, Holden, Toyota andMitsubishi. With all this competition, the winning margin has reduced to a single point - the second category where this is thecase. Despite the hot competition, the Isuzu MU-X LST has managed to stay at the top of the segment. The MU-X LST is is now athree time winner of the 7 seat 4WD under $60,000 award winning in its first time out in 2013 again in 2014 and now 2015.

The Isuzu MU-X is built on the same platform as the D Max Ute with suspension improvements and a heap of other designfeatures to produce quite a pleasing 7 seat family 4WD. It may be based on the ute platform but it drives like a SUV. In fact, evenwith the newer competitors, the MU-X has the most SUV like ride compared to the others in the segment. While the Isuzu MU-X isa well proportioned stylish 4WD, it looks smaller than it actually is and has great 4WD capability. Roof rails, side steps, alloywheels, shark fin GPS antenna, electronic fold in mirrors and fog lights all complement the stylish exterior. Internally, theimmediate impression is quality. The black leather seats, door inserts etc all produce a feeling that exudes value for money. Theelectrically adjustable driver's seat is comfortable and its firmness is appreciated after many kilometres in the seat.

In front of the driver is the smallish, thickleather height adjustable steering wheelthat houses the usual controls. The dashhas two large dials with a MFD betweenthem. The control for this is on the end ofthe indicator stalk and it’s spot on for easeof use. As a taller driver I would haveappreciated a slightly longer seat travel, but at no time was I uncomfortable.

The centre stack houses a premium audiosystem with 6 speakers, iPod® andBluetooth® phone connectivity isstandard, while the rear passengers areentertained with Isuzu’s "Sky Sound" roof-mounted sound system and 10” DVDmonitor. Along with Bluetooth® audiostreaming, the LS-T also features a touch-screen satellite navigation system with livetraffic updates and over 10,000 off-roaddestinations.

Internal storage is also a distinctive feature of the MU-X. All car designers should sit in the MU-X and see just how simple it is toprovide an abundance of storage areas. There are door pockets front and back (with bottle holders but small otherwise), twodecent sized glove boxes, a storage bin on top of the dash, bottle holders in front of the air vents (great for keeping things cool insummer), a shelf below the steering wheel, a sunglass holder above your head, a door sill recess, cup holders in the centreconsole and a large centre storage bin. There are 14 cup holders in total. Seriously, all cars should be like this.

The middle row seats are comfortable more for two than three with a fold down arm rest featuring - yes you guessed it, cupholders. The seats are a little flat but comfortable enough for long distances. For all but the tallest passenger there is adequatehead, shoulder, knee and foot room in the middle row. The third row is easily accessed and with deep foot wells it’s up thereamongst the best of third row seats, better than the Landcruiser.

With the rear seats in use there isn't a lot of space behind, however, like most of these type of vehicles, it is usually a short drivewith all seats in use. Both rear rows of seats benefit from air-conditioning in the roof above them. Importantly all outer seats havegrab handles for the rough drives ahead. The design of the rear seats is also a let down with a ‘hump’ in the floor load area.

Driving the MU-X is the long lasting Isuzu 3.0L diesel. This engine is one tough motor and is renowned for its build tolerances andlongevity. The term indestructible comes to mind. The engine produces 130Kw of power @ 3,600rpm and a lazy 380Nm of torqueat 1,800rpm. These figures don't always tell the full story though - we will touch on that later. The transmission is a five speedsequential sports shift auto with an adaptive feature that styles itself on your diving. The engine is refined, quieter than youexpect and is economical with a fuel usage rate of just 8.4L/100Km. On the freeway we got that down to a little over 7.5L/100Km.Surprisingly enough, towing at close to the 3000kg limit we experienced fuel economy of 9.8l/100k. Stunning really and wechecked it three times!

The MU-X is equipped with Isuzu’s super-easy to use ‘Terrain command’ 4WD select dial and auto versions are fitted withhill-ascent and descent control. The Terrain Command system is shift on the fly style and while simple’, works brilliantly. Car-likeride and handling both on and off road is provided by a new suspension geometry custom designed for the MU-X. Frontindependent double wishbone suspension with coil springs, gas shocks and stabiliser bar allows the driver positive feedback andsteering control regardless of the terrain underfoot, and a rear five-link suspension configuration also with coil springs, stabiliserbar and gas shocks provide superior stability when traversing off road or towing.

The Isuzu MU-X LST has a 5 Star ANCAP with a host of safety features including a high-tensile steel passenger safety cell withside-intrusion bars, comprehensive crash avoidance electronics including 4-channel 4-sensor ABS with EBD and EBA as well asESC and TCS, six airbags (dual front, curtain and side), reverse camera and rear park assist sensors.

Overall OzRoamer Rating: 91/100

Off road, the MU-X auto performed effortlessly. The MU-X is fitted with rugged off-road protection in the form of a front steelplate skid/splash shield as well as steel plate guards to protect the sump and transfer case. Clever engineering ensures there areno low-slung components – the front lower control arms don’t hang too low and the air intake is hidden within the front fender. In the engine bay, the ECU isn’t exposed and the alternator sits up nice and high. There is substantial 230mm ground-clearance,30.1° approach and 25.1° departure angles. Isuzu have come up with some great styling packs to really stand the vehicle outfrom the crowd with factory fitted accessories that compete with anything the aftermarket boys can come up with.

We have towed caravans, camper trailers, sea doos, storage trailers and even a 4WD on a trailer with the MU-X and throughout,it has never missed a beat. While towing a heavy 4WD we averaged about 9.8L/100km by keeping to around 90 - 95kmh andstaying within the torque band. There was plenty of power and low down torque for the job. That is what I mean by sometimesthe figures don't translate to real world driving. The MU-X performed like it had another 100Nm of torque.

Overall, the new Isuzu MU-X is a strong contender in the family 4WD market. It has almost car/wagon like handling, enoughpower for almost everything you will ask of it, plenty of creature comforts, 5 star ANCAP safety, ability to seat 7 in relativecomfort, is a robust and competent 4WD and all for less than $60,000. That's pretty good. The key here is balance, and onbalance the MU-X is the best value proposition out there.

What the Isuzu does is make you really question why you would pay upwards of $80,000 on some of the other 'family 4WDwagons' - it's that good. I think it is interesting that you can get an Isuzu MU-X LSU and a decent camper trailer for less than anew top spec Prado and be out there enjoying the Australian bush and not missing a thing. The Isuzu MU-X LST is a worthywinner of the 7 seat 4WD under $60,000 category for 2015. It's also worth noting though that it was by the slimmest of margins.

It has been a big year for the Kia Sorento Platinum - not only did it undergo a total redesign which was launched in June 2015,but the price movements meant that this previous category winner now sits in a new category. It’s a bit of an unfair advantagethough as the value proposition meant that the Kia Sorento Platinum was almost a shoe in for the winner of the 2015 OzRoamer 7Seat AWD SUV over $60,000. It has previously been a two time winner in the under $60,000 category as well.

With the availability of a new platform in the Kia assembly shed, they’ve taken the opportunity to redesign the third generationSorento. About the only carry over from the previous model is the tweaked 2.2L diesel and transmission. The body has beenredesigned with more aggressive and defined lines as well as generous new proportions. The body is 95mm longer, 45mm lowerand 5mm wider with an 80mm longer wheel base. Even with the lower body height, the seating has been redesigned to providemore head room in the front and second rows. This is more than evident by the fact that I didn’t need to put the driver’s seat allthe way back to be able to get a comfortable position (all 6’5” of me).

On the inside, the redesign has continuedwith a smooth flowing package that is easyon the eye and easy to use. The dash hasbeen laid out with distinct and easy to seeclusters that don’t overwhelm you withcomplicated buttons or gadgets. Thesteering wheel on the Platinum is a goodlooking affair with the trim broken up witha feature piece and all steering wheelscome with controls to activate your mostused functions. All variants come with dualzone A/C as well as second and third rowcooling.

The Platinum comes with heated steeringwheel, dual zone A/C as well as front andsecond row seat heating and front seatcooling. The Platinum driver’s seat iselectrically adjustable 10 ways and thefront passenger seat 8 ways. It’s almostimpossible not to be comfortable.

Other key features include auto sensing smart tailgates which open with a proximity sensor and a panoramic sun roof. Autoheadlights with LED parkers, daylight running lights and led rear lights are standard and the Platinum has HID auto levellingadaptive (cornering) headlights.

An interesting factor about the entertainment system is the fact that there is no CD player available. While some may lament this,it is the way of the future and it has full compatibility with media devices via USB and 3mm jack. However the stereo isn’t videocapable. The Platinum is the pick of bunch with its premium sound system (10 speaker Infinity) and obviously SatNav.

Seating for the rear passengers is comfortable with adequate headroom, legroom and shoulder room. I have had 6 teenagers inthe car with minimal whinging. Boot space in the new Sorento is among the ‘best-in-class’ as cargo capacity is huge. Load it upand drive and it will transport in economical comfort. Storage is a feature with twin cup-holders, deep centre console, largeglovebox, an illuminated lower tray in the centre console and four door pockets. The second row seat also features a foldingcentre armrest with twin cup-holders.

Safety has had a major haul over and the Sorento achieves a 5 star ANCAP rating. All models have front side and curtain airbags,7 seat seatbelt warning lights. The Platinum also picks up some other features including blind spot and lane change assist, lanedeparture warning as well as rear cross traffic warning for reversing out of places and to top it off smart cruise control. All modelshave front and rear sensors, reversing camera and tyre pressure monitoring system. The rear view camera provides an excellentview behind the car for hooking up trailers.

There is also a comprehensive suite of active safety technologies including Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), ElectronicStability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Anti-skid Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)and Brake Assist System (BAS), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Brake Control (DBC).

One major improvement with the Sorento is the suspension package which was exclusively designed in Australia for Australianconditions and this was evident on the test. The Kia handles well on road taking the twisty hills around Port Douglas and Cairns inits stride and comfortably cruising along at high speeds. The short stint along some gravel and dirt was promising, with thebumps and corrugations being soaked up with minimal intrusion into the cabin and the Sorento has always been a goodperformer on sand.

The sports mode for the transmission actually made a noticeable difference to the way the gearbox performed compared tosome. Another improvement is with the NVH levels as the engine and road noise was hardly audible especially in the Platinum.Towing has been bumped up to 2 tonne with a 100kg ball weight which will require some thought to loading your trailer. The2.2L diesel produces 147kW @3,800 rpm and 441Nm @ 1,750 rpm and is mated to the excellent 6 speed automatic transmission. This combination has proved to be responsive, robust and frugal. In short, it is spot on.

The AWD is a single ratio (high range) 4WD system with a default status that delivers 100% of engine torque to the front wheelsduring normal driving. For improved traction while driving in rain, snow, mud, unpaved roads and off-road – the driver canmanually select ‘Lock Mode’. This mode splits the torque 50/50 between the front and rear axles for better stability up to a speedof 30 km/h. The combination of powerful diesel motor, 6 speed automatic transmission, new suspension and speed-sensitivehydraulically power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering gives the Sorento impressive handling.

We have previously towed (with the Kia’s heavy duty tow kit) horse floats, car trailers, camper trailers, ditch diggers, quad bikesand seadoos with the Sorento and never once did it grumble. It's off road ability is surprising if you take account of its overhangsand acknowledge its limitations, it will provide heaps of off road fun for the family. On dirt trails it performs better than youwould expect for an AWD SUV and on sand it is simply awesome if you take care of the overhangs. You must remember to turnoff the traction control though. We have driven the Sorento plenty of times on the dunes of Stockton beach and through the firetrails of the Watagan mountains and within its limitations, have never had a problem.

The design is reasonably stylish and comfortable, with seats seven, jam-packed with features, fantastic value and comes with Kia’s7-year warranty, capped price servicing and road side assistance. Combine that with the awesome motor transmissioncombination, it should be at the top of buyer’s lists for an honest and practical family AWD SUV. The Sorento is the winner of the2015 OzRoamer 7 Seat AWD SUV over $60,000. It has previously won in 2012 and 2014 in another category as well.

This year’s winner of the OzRoamer 7 Seat 4WD over $60,000 may surprise some people. Yet another of the Ute based wagonvariants, the unfortunately named Toyota Fortuner Crusade is based on the Hilux chassis, with heavy modifications to make itmore car like for family buyers with genuine 4WD credentials.

The development process has a strong Australian DNA with its unique body, wiring and key underpinnings having been designedor extensively developed and evaluated by local engineers. The rugged frame, high-torque engine, all-coil suspension and strongupper body have been proven in Australia under the world's toughest conditions - on tarmac and off the beaten track.

Externally, the Fortuner is actually quite a pleasant design with bold front end and grill, sweeping uplift side profile and integratedrear end. The Crusade features projector-type LED headlamps, LED daytime running lamps, LED tail lamps and side steps, alloywheels, fog lamps, roof rails and privacy glass. The power tailgate in the Crusade can be controlled from switches on the

instrument panel, in the tailgate itself orfrom the smart key-fob. It has a memoryfunction that allows owners to set theopening height, which is handy whenparking under a low-hanging branch or ina garage with a low roof.

The maximum height is 191cm - whichenables 90 per cent of Australian men tostand under it and ensures theincorporated switch is still within reach of90 per cent of Australian women.

Internally the Fortuner raises the bar a bitfor a Hilux. It exudes premium SUV ambi-ance with elegant and flowing lines, softtouch materials on high touch areas, espe-cially the centre console, which is flankedby vertical columns covered in soft-touchmaterials that also provide leg support forthe driver and front passenger.

Front leather faced seats are very comfortable and with height and reach adjustment for the leather feel steering wheel, it is easyto find a comfortable driving position even for taller drivers. The Crusade features a high-precision, full-colour 4.2-inch MID withinformation including trip meters, vehicle checks and data to support economical driving. Steering-wheel controls operate theMID menu.

There is seating for seven people over three rows with sports front seats that are flared at the shoulders and fitted with firmbolsters for maximum support. Features include seven-inch touch-screen display audio systems with six speakers, auxiliary/USBport, AM/FM radio and a CD player. The screen also displays the reversing camera image and provides access to Toyota Linkconnected mobility.

Toyota Link can provide access to Pandora Internet radio and help find fuel, a destination, weather and other assistance. Top-of-the-range Crusade has DAB+ digital radio and satellite navigation, which expands the capability of the Toyota Link system.Convenience features include Bluetooth connectivity, voice recognition, steering-wheel audio and telephone controls and powerdoor locks, windows and mirrors.

The Crusade has climate controlled air-conditioning with separate air-flow controls for second-row passengers. Storage space isgenerous with a number of cup and bottle holders, compartments, trays, pockets and consoles. An air-conditioned compartmentabove the glovebox can be used to cool or warm items with the capacity for two 600ml bottles. Convenient shopping-bag hooksare fitted to the front seat-backs.

All models feature three 12-volt accessory sockets - under the centre cluster, in the rear of the centre console for second-row seatpassengers and in the rear luggage area. Crusade also has a 100w/AC220-volt accessory socket in the centre console.

Fortuner's seven seats are arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration. The 60/40 split-fold second-row seat has a one-touch slide andtumble feature, while the 50/50 third-row seats are fold-to-the-side style that severely limits available storage space. Cargocapacity ranges from 200 litres to 1,080 litres when packed to the top of the seat backs.

The Fortuner Crusade is powered by a high-torque 2.8-litre four-cylinder common-rail direct-injection turbo-diesel engine with achoice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Either transmission is good and works well with the engine. In fact, on thelaunch we drove a manual version over a dirt road that has been part of the World Rally Championship previously and it was ahuge amount of fun. We have driven the Crusade over forest trails, sand dunes, heavy 4WD tracks, dire roads, highways andfreeways and throughout, it has impressed with its ease of driving, ride and handling, tractability and quietness. Toyota have donean excellent job of designing a vehicle for Australian conditions.

Maximum power is 130kW @ 3,400 rpm and peak torque is 450Nm @ 1,600 rpm for the automatic and 420Nm for the manual.Braked towing capacity is 3,000kg for the manual and 2,800kg for the auto. Tow ball rating is 10% of either weight. The key hereis that while the power figure is probably a little low, the available torque at 1600 rpm is plenty. It provides an easy drivingenvironment and towing is a breeze, especially with the trailer sway control. It also means that Fortuner is economical at around8.6 L/100k for the auto version.

The Fortuner has strong off-road ability - as you would expect using the base Hilux 4WD transmission. This includes reardifferential lock, approach angle of 30 degrees, departure angle of 25 degrees, ramp-over angle of 23.5 degrees, groundclearance of 225mm, wading depth of 700mm, Electronic transfer case dial, A-TRC (active traction control) and locally developedunderbody protection. All Fortuner models have an electronically controlled transfer case for ‘on-the-fly’ changes from 4x2 to4x4 high, using Toyota's unique disconnecting differential.

Safety is a key feature with a five-star ANCAP safety rating. All models are equipped with stability and active traction control, seven airbags, reversing camera, trailer sway control, hill-start assist control and rake-and-reach adjustments for the steeringcolumn. It includes three top-tether anchors and two ISOFIX child-seat mounts.

A comprehensive range of Toyota Genuine accessories is available including airbag-compatible bull bars and newly developedtowbar and load distribution hitch.

This is a great alternative to either a Prado or a Kluger for families. In addition to its prodigious off-road ability, the Fortunerdelivers a compliant and quiet ride, a spacious interior, convenient features and premium quality expected in a modern SUV.While new, it is a worthy winner of the OzRoamer 2015 7 Seat 4WD over $60,000 Award.

Toyota Kluger GXL was a close runner up in this category last year and this year is the winner of the OzRoamer 7 Seat AWD SUVUnder $60,000. The all new Kluger was released in early 2014 and the new seven seat Toyota Kluger is an AWD SUV that hassurpassed the previous model in everything including style, technology, comfort, capability and safety at value pricing. The thirdgeneration Kluger is more technologically advanced, has more internal space, more second and rear seat room and more luggagespace than its predecessor. The second generation was a sales success, this generation only capitalises on that and more.

The all new Kluger addresses one key deficiency of the previous model, it’s no longer plain and boring. In developing the newKluger, Toyota spent a lot of time in local development for the suspension and steering dynamics. Frankly, it shows, as the Klugerdisplays again a level of driving experience also lacking previously. The suspension geometry changes really show up, especiallyon the dirt. Corrugations, fire trails and dirt roads are all handled with ease. It's actually a little fun under those conditions.

Development of the new Kluger hadfocused on expanding its visual appeal, developing an even better package forfamilies and providing greater driverenjoyment. A totally redesigned interiorraises the bar on overall quality withpremium materials, soft-touch surfaces, bright accents and greater refinement andfunctionality. Internally the GXL is a verycomfortable place to be.

Smart storage solutions include an under-dash tray shaped to prevent items slidingout and a 24.5-litre roll-top centre consolethat doubles as an armrest and is bigenough to store a large handbag. This is avery well designed area as you can havethe centre bin open yet still have elbowsupport.

What impresses most about the Kluger GXL is the feeling of space inside. You literally have to get out and check that it is a midsize SUV. The designers have dome an amazing job of extracting every available mm of space internally.

As you would expect, the all new Kluger has a host of standard features. All models have a reversing camera and reverse-parkingsensors, daytime running lamps, factory-fitted three row air conditioning, Multi-information Display (MID), cruise control,steering-wheel controls for audio, phone and MID, electric power-assisted steering, alloy wheels including full-sized spare, 72-litrefuel tank, front fog lamps, privacy glass, three 12V accessory connectors, auto headlamps on/off, cargo-area tonneau cover, six-speaker display audio with Toyota Link and AUX and USB inputs. The list continues with tilt and telescopic steering columnadjustment, power-adjustable exterior mirrors, front and rear mudflaps, conversation mirror, power windows (with front-doorauto up/down), seat-belt reminders for first and second-row seats, keyless smart entry and push-button start, 10-way poweradjustable driver's seat and roof rails.

One of the benefits of the GXL Kluger is the rear seat room. The mid row occupants have more than adequate head, shoulder, knee and leg room for three and the rear most seats can accommodate taller teens in relative comfort. It goes beyond the usualpacking-them-in for short trips. The internal space is class leading. Like all these vehicles though, with the rear seats up there isminimal luggage room.

The Kluger is powered by a 3.5-litre all-alloy quad cam V6 engine provides a balance of performance and economy. It delivers 201kW of power at 6200 rpm and 337 Nm of torque at 4700 rpm. It mates well with the new six-speed multi-mode transmission, forincreased driveability and better fuel economy. The new U660 transmission was designed to complement the vehicle's quad-camdual VVT-i V6 engine and operate with Kluger's AWD drivelines. The combination sips fuel at an ADR combined cycle of 10.6litres/100 km, with CO2 emissions of 237 grams/km.

Safety is a key feature, with the Kluger achieving a 5 star ANCAP safety rating. The GXL Kluger also has daytime running lamps, fog lamps, reversing camera and steering-wheel audio controls as standard equipment. Its comprehensive electronic safetyfeatures include Anti-skid brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRC),Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Hill-start Assist Control and all-wheel-drive models have Downhill Assist Control.

The Kluger GXL has an impressive passive safety package, including seven airbags. The airbags include dual-stage driver airbag,dual-stage and dual-chamber front passenger airbag, driver's knee airbag, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain-shield airbags.

The Kluger GXL AWD model also includes standard Dynamic Torque Control for maximum traction and cornering ability andDownhill Assist Control that automatically controls the brakes to maintain a constant low speed when descending slopes, helping to reduce wheel lock.

The compact, lightweight system uses information on vehicle speed, yaw rates and steering and throttle angles to control torquedistribution automatically between the front and rear axles. It saves fuel by driving only the front wheels when the vehicle iscruising, switching to AWD when needed via an electro-magnetically controlled coupling in the rear differential housing. TheAWD system controls torque distribution to ensure the Kluger follows the driver's intended line to improve initial turn-in whencornering. If the VSC detects approaching oversteer, then rear-wheel torque is reduced. If approaching understeer is detected,rear-wheel torque is increased.

The Kluger will tow 2000 kg in comfort and with a 200 kg tow ball rating it is well balanced when doing so. However, load it upwith a pile of kids and hitch a trailer on, you will feel it with a saggy bottom and poor power delivery. However, for smallercaravans, camper trailers, bike trailers seadoos etc., the Kluger's towing ability adds to its family value credentials. What you willfind though is that with the powerful petrol engine, the fuel consumption when towing will increase dramatically and there islittle you can do about that.

However, just because it's a Toyota and has AWD drive system, don't confuse this with an off road vehicle. The AWD system isbest for dirt roads, awesome in the snow fields, hard packed sand etc. If your adventurous spirit extends beyond theseboundaries, then perhaps the Kluger shouldn't be your choice. The Toyota Kluger GXL is a well appointed, versatile family AWDSUV. Easy is a word that comes to mind; easy to own, easy to use and drive, easy to load a heap of kids and gear inside and easyto sell when the time comes. It has just about everything that you could wish for. I just wish for a diesel option with a 6 or 7speed transmission. Despite this it is a worthy winner in our awards for 2015.

Every so often in this job you get a real sense of anticipation about an upcoming review. The Ford F250 4X4 Platinum 6.7L V8Diesel SuperDuty Crew Cab Ute had just that. We picked up the test Ute on a Friday afternoon and by Saturday afternoon we wereworking out just how we could afford one. The test vehicle was supplied by Stewart Angove of Harrison F Trucks.

When we went to pick up the Ute, the first impression was that it dwarfed the 4WD that was sitting next to it in the lot. It wasn'tuntil we got close that I realised the 4WD next to it was a 200 Series Landcruiser that, when level at the back, came up to justbehind the front wheel on the F250. Wow, this thing is big!

I have to say I became a little nervous about driving it home in peak hour Friday afternoon traffic in Sydney. Usually a time whensane people stay off the roads, not go driving half way across Sydney in a behemoth Ute. After about 20 minutes of negotiating

the mayhem I came to the realisation thatthis was a giant Ute that was very easy todrive. I stopped checking my side mirrorsto see if I was staying in my lane. Then theenjoyment started and continued stronglyuntil three weeks later when I had to returnthe F250 very reluctantly.

The full title of the F250 on test is a F-250SuperDuty ‘Platinum’ 4x4 Crew ShortWheel Base 6.75’ Pickup Box SRW. I'm notreally sure what the SRW stands for but therest is self explanatory.

The F250 is powered by a 6.7L Ford PowerStroke Turbo Diesel V8 that delivers itspower through a 6 Speed auto withprogressive range select, integratedexhaust break & tow haul mode. The 6.7 Lproduces 302kw of power @ 2800 rpm anda massive 1,085NM of torque @ 1600 rpm.

Yes, you read that right, over 1,000 Nm of torque at 1,600 rpm. That's a huge tick for power. Nothing in Australia matches it forpower or torque. No wonder the horse brigade love these vehicles for towing their floats. Now you might be excused for thinkingthat all this power comes at the expense of poor fuel economy. Well be prepared to be pleasantly surprised. While around town itwas a bit thirsty, on the trip to the farm, fully loaded it averaged just around 12L/100km which was awesome for this vehicle andgiven its power, more than acceptable.

Speaking of towing, the F250 will comfortably tow 3500 kg, which is where all the other 4WD's stop. It will go further and tow upto 6350 Kg when properly fitted out and will accommodate a 7620kg 5th wheeler. In addition to these impressive figures, theF250 has a payload of approximately 1.9 tonne. The F250 also has inbuilt electric brakes, power scope external mirrors, tow swaycontrol and reversing camera for safety and to assist in hitching up a trailer. Although we didn't test the towing capacity withanything other than a couple of camper trailers, we did test the tow haul system with exhaust brakes and can vouch for theireffectiveness. So that's a big tick for towing.

As you might have guessed by now, the F250 is big. It's overall length is about 6.27m with a wheelbase of just over 4.0m. It standsa touch over 2.0 m tall and a touch over 2.0 m wide (excl mirrors). My daughter who is about 1.67 m tall is just taller than thebonnet. The grill is massive and you have to literally step up into the cabin. Suburban shopping centre car parks are not the happyhunting ground for the F250. Let's be honest, it just doesn't fit.

The external look is enhanced by the Platinum features including body-colour front & rear bumpers, bright chrome door &tailgate handles, 6" angular chrome step bars, unique satin chrome grille, chrome exhaust tip, transfer case & fuel tank skid platesand 20" Platinum Cast Aluminium wheels with LT275/65Rx20E OWL A/T tyres. The side steps are necessary to assist in gettinginside the cabin. Once inside, the first impression is space. The size outside translates to heaps of useable space inside. Theelectrically adjustable leather driver's seat was really comfortable. With the height and reach adjustable leather steering wheel, Icould get the perfect driving position. There was enough seat slide adjustment for the tallest of drivers.

The three drivers on test were 6'1", 6'3" and 6'5" tall and we all had enough room. In fact on the way back, I sat in the back seatfor over 4 hours and never felt cramped. I even decided to have a snooze and slid my legs up on the back seat and stretchedthem out fully. I have never been able to do that in any other car, 4WD or Ute before that I have tested.

Back to the front seats. They are 10 way electrically adjustable, with 4 way adjustable head rests. They are both heated and cooledand are some of the most comfortable seats I have sat in for quite a while. There is more than enough shoulder, butt and headroom, even with the Akubra on. The thick rimmed steering wheel is also heated with a combination of leather and wood and feelsjust right in your hands. There are the usual controls on the cross members and while the centre pad is quite large by ourstandards, it isn't obtrusive.

What does take some getting used to is the column mounted transmission. I constantly found myself reaching for thetransmission lever on the centre console only to grab thin air. However, like most things with the F250, once you get used to it - itfeels right. The only slightly uncomfortable things about the driving position is the lack of a drivers left foot rest or even anyroom for it. The conversion from LHD to RHD means that the tunnel intrudes on your left foot area. Not overtly so, but noticeableenough to warrant a mention. The other thing worth mentioning is the handbrake release. Once you are settled in, its a reachdown under the dash to the lever and a bit awkward. The pedals are electrically adjustable for individual drivers though’, whichwhile a bit gimmicky, is nevertheless handy for long haul drives. That's a big tick for driver comfort.

In front of the driver is a comprehensive dash display that is dominated by two large dials, a centre multi function display andfour smaller ancillary dials on top. The interesting part of the dash is the MFD. It provides the driver a wealth of options forinformation and from our point of view, was particularly good for the four wheel drive aspect.

The centre stack houses the premium Sony audio system with 8 speakers and subwoofer and satellite navigation. Unfortunatelythe vehicle we tested was so new, the Australian maps hadn't been configured yet. The TFT screen is large and easy to readthough. Below the screen are the usual controls for air conditioner, stereo etc. Above the centre console are 4 pre wired auxiliaryswitches which is a clever feature. There is also an inbuilt 110 v inverter which is good, but not useful in Australia. Another cleveridea is the inbuilt garage door openers that can be programmed to your individual needs, located on the passenger sun visor.

The centre console houses 4 large cup holders, front and side bins for storage and the largest centre bin I have seen. Itsenormous and useful. Off’-setting this is the smallest and crappiest glove box that you can imagine. Other storage includes duallayer large door bins, rear cup holders etc. One extremely clever idea is the lockable, under seat storage under the rear seats. There is room for three passengers comfortably in the rear with plenty of knee, head, butt and shoulder room and a flat floor forleg room. The rear seats are also heated, with a fold down centre console, drinks holders and rear air conditioning vents.

One really cool feature, that’s immensely practical, is the ability to start the vehicle from outside. Once started, the vehicledetermines the internal temperature and will either trigger the heating or air conditioning to bring the internal temperature tothe desired level. It will also activate the heating on the steering wheel and seats if necessary. The F250 will run for 10 minutes likethis. Fun and practical. Other features include power slide moonroof, automatic dual zone front air conditioning, under seat andconsole ducts, AM/FM/HD/Satellite, clock, Navigation system with voice activation, cruise control with steering wheel controls, power door locks with 2 stage unlock, key fob (all doors), keyless entry, manual tailgate/rear door lock and 5 12V DC poweroutlets. The list continues with retained accessory power, wireless phone connectivity, Internet access, 1 AC power outlet, powerfront and rear windows with deep tint, driver and passenger 1-touch-down, variable intermittent front windshield wipers, powerrear window, rear window defroster, dual illuminated vanity mirrors, auto-dimming day-night rearview mirror, interior lightsinclude dome light with fade, front and rear reading lights and illuminated entry.

Safety features include 4-wheel anti-lock braking system - Centre high mounted stop light - Dual airbags, seat mounted driverand passenger side-impact airbags, curtain 1st and 2nd row overhead airbags - Front height adjustable seatbelts - Immobilizer, panic alarm and security system.

The F250 has been optioned with a heavy duty suspension that assists with towing and handling. It does make the handling alittle stiff on road but comes into its own off road. Steering is hydraulic power-assist re-circulating ball steering with 4-wheel discbrakes with front and rear vented discs. The firm ride suspension consists of non-independent front suspension - front anti-rollbar - HD front coil springs - front shocks - Rigid rear axle - HD Rear leaf suspension.

Off road the F250 shines. Not in the rock hopping or tight twisty trail way but in the long haul outback tourer way. Theprodigious power combined with shift on the fly part-time four-wheel drive with electronic transfer case with auto locking hubsworks a treat. In the time we had the F250 we never had to engage the lockable rear diff. Approach, departure and ramp overangles are not conducive to off road work but there is handy ground clearance. The length also hinders off road. This samelength creates amazing cargo capacity though with over 2.0 m in load length. On road the Ford F250 drives smoothly, handlessurprisingly well, cruises without effort with the high torque figures and as mentioned is reasonably economical. It actually wasa heap of fun.

So let's sum up my thoughts about the Ford F250 6.7 L V8 Platinum Super Duty. It will seat five adults in comfort, is chock full ofluxury features, will tow more than anything else on the market in this segment, has awesome power and torque, more thancapable off the main roads, has huge cargo capacity and is super cool. I'd say it is without doubt the best Prestige 4WD inAustralia and goes close to being the best outback tourer in the country. The F250 is exciting and a very worthy dual winner ofthe OzRoamer Prestige SUV Award

AUTOFRIDGE portable fridge ProductsAUTOFRIDGE Australia Pty Ltd is an Australianowned company that is now in its 24th year. The AUTOFRIDGE project began in 1986 after aprototype portable fridge was built to test outthe eutectic refrigeration principle that hadbeen used in the marine industry for manyyears. The first AUTROFRIDGE portableeutectic refrigerators for 4WD applicationswere produced in 1987 and the product quicklygained acceptance due to its exceptionalefficiency and high quality.Today, the product is still hand built with theprime objectives being efficiency, reliability anda high standard of finish. In a conventionalcompressor powered refrigeration system theevaporator is mounted inside the fridge cabinetand makes everything cold when thecompressor is running. When thecompressor turns off, the fridge warms up. Thesystem starts up again to bring the

temperature down. This process continuesconstantly and is controlled by the thermostat -all very simple and in most cases reliable.Eutectic refrigeration is simply the use of acompressor-driven refrigeration systemcoupled to a cold storage device, i.e. eutectictank (sometimes called ‘ice bank’ or ‘ice wall’).The eutectic tank contains a liquid which ischilled and frozen during the refrigeration cycle. This mass of ice housed within the tank iscapable of keeping the temperature of aninsulated box at refrigeration temperaturesfor long periods of time without running thecompressor. When the eutectic tank or ice bankhas thawed, the refrigeration system is runagain to re-establish the ice bank.In a properly designed eutectic system therefrigeration system only needs to be run onceor twice daily with very long periods betweeneach run. It is not necessary to have an auxiliary

battery just to run the EUTECTIC fridge. The advantageof the eutectic system is that the refrigeration unitdoes not need a power source on a continuous basis, whereas a conventional system must have poweravailable at all times. For enquiries, at E: [email protected]: (02) 9316 9539 F: (02) 9316 9871www.autofridge.com.au

Bridgestone Dueler D697 ProductsBridgestone’s reputation for legendary offroad toughness has been forged on some ofAustralia’s roughest terrain - so it was naturalthat the new Bridgestone Dueler D697 4WDtyre would have to prove its worth under thesame conditions.Bridgestone undertook two years of testingwith vehicles fitted with Dueler D697 workingin unforgiving conditions such as cattle stationsin the Kimberley, the infamous Gibb RiverRoad, Flinders Ranges and Simpson Desert. Not surprisingly, the Dueler D697 passedwith flying colours.“We ran more than 400,000 kilometres oftesting over that two year period and weproved that the D697 offers even betterresistance to stone cuts and chips than itspredecessor, the D694, while retaining all of itstoughness and puncture resistance qualities,”said Claudio

Sodano, Bridgestone’s Group TechnicalField Service Manager.“In addition, the new tyre showedsignificantly better wear than thecompetition. So, it’s not only tough but it willdefinitely go the distance.”Since launching the D694 in 2006 saleshave almost tripled, cementing Bridgestone’sposition as Australia’s market-leader inAll Terrain (A/T) tyres. That position is set to strengthen further, with the Dueler D697 available in a hugerange of sizes.“We have released a wide range of D697sizes specifically targeted to suit vehiclesin the Australian market,” Claudio said.Bridgestone’s legendary Dueler All-Terrainproduct range is supported by over 300Bridgestone retail outlets Australia-wide.
