SUMMER CAMP 2010

Ship Store & Dock HoursFrom now on the Ship Store and Fuel Dock will be open on Tuesdays from May 1st until September 30th, for your con-venience during the summer season. Take advantage of all the treats available.

Gas PumpsPlease remember, Gas Pumps are only turned on during shipstore hours. Due to liability issues the dining room staff can-not turn on the pumps. Only marina staff may service you on the gas dock during ship store hours.

Cell PhonesT he use of cell phones is discouraged in-side the club house. Please be courteous of other members and their dining expe-rience and silence your phone inside the club. If you receive a call, please take it outside on the front porch.

Fall Dining HoursWednesday Night Dining will continue until September 30th. Sunday Night Din-ing will also end September 30th for the Summer Season.

Thursday Night DiningThursday nights this fall, we will continue to feature 1/2 price wine on select bottles. Come in and enjoy!

Dining Room Summer HeatWith the extreme heat this summer it has been difficult for our air system to keep up with cooling the Dining Room at satisfac-tory levels; especially with the doors open-ing and closing consistently in the back of club. We have heard your concerns and are looking into the expense of a larger handling system. We appreciate your support and continued dining under the circumstances.

As this hot summer rolls along, I would like to thank all of you that have braved the heat to visit us at the club for our special events and regular a la carte dining. It is the feedback that we receive from you the members from your experiences here that we use to shape our club events and day to day offerings. While the feedback comes in many different forms (i.e. comment cards, emails, personal conversations or simply word of mouth) they are all carefully considered to see if and how we can better service our members and guests. Feel free to bring up any concerns, ideas or suggestions to the management staff. Our doors are always open and we are always willing to listen. One point of concern that has been raised as of late is our ability to offer a la carte dining during our buffet services. During our larger club events, where we can serve up to 400 members and guests, such as our July 4th Cel-ebration, Easter, Mother’s Day, Oyster Roast and others we simply do not have the space in our kitchen to provide both services. We try to tailor these buffets to offer a vast array of food to cover all palettes and ages. Sunday nights we have traditionally offered a buffet, however at member request a few years ago we also began offering a la carte service. Due to the decline of buffet usage on Sunday nights last year we discontinued the buffet by member request. As we went into summer we tried to reincorporate the buffet into our offerings, by providing buffet service twice a month. Again the demand for a la carte has been the primary focus and desire of the mem-bership. Therefore, in order to service the pri-mary demand for our membership; we will now serve a la carte only on Sunday evenings. We hope that you will come to us with your opinions and ideas as we try to make the Pen-insula Yacht Club a wonderful experience for everyone. Thank you again for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the club.

It’s hard to believe that the summer is winding down and that school will be starting at the end of this month. Even so, the PYC still has great events planned that you will not want to miss. Make sure you mark your calendars to be a part of the Cardboard Boat Race and Family Carnival taking place on August 14th. This is such a fun-filled day for the whole family. In addition to the always-anticipated boat

race, there will be a Kid’s Carnival, Kid’s Double Feature Movie Night and a Rock the Dock Party on “H” Dock. You definitely will not want to miss this! In September, sailors will be getting ready for the major sailing event of the season, --The Peninsula Cup Regatta. This weekend is packed with a lot of fun for both sailors and non-sailors alike. In addition to some serious (and not so serious) sailing, there will be an evening of music on the back lawn similar to the event held for Beach Music Friday with an Oyster Roast and Shag Fest on Saturday Night. Even if you are not a sailor, you will want to be a part of this event and dance to the sounds of “Kittyhawk” under the stars. This year, we are pleased to have CANNON School as one of our sponsors of the Peninsula Cup Regatta. Don’t forget to start thinking about your costumes for the Halloween party that will take place on Saturday, October 30th. We will once again be trick-or-treating on the docks and having activities for the kids. Last year’s Adult Costume Contest was a big hit and this year promises to be even bigger. If you would like to help with kid’s activities, decorating the dock gates, or being a part of planning the adult party, please let the PYC staff or your Fleet Committee know. See you at the club, Amy Roberts

The Peninsula Cup Regatta Weekend

The 18th Peninsula Cup Regatta is fast approach-ing. Spinnakers will fly as the area’s premier keel boat race gets underway! The event is so well an-ticipated that we have boats brought in to Lake Norman for the event. The event will kickoff with a practice race, on Fri-day, September 17th. On Saturday, September 18th we will have two races, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. We will only have one race on Sunday, September 19th and then we will wrap up with the awards ceremony which will be-gin around 3:00 pm on the back lawn of the PYC clubhouse. Notice of Race will be available in the ship store. You do not have to be a professional racer to par-ticipate in this event. First time racers are always welcome and generally enter in the cruising cat-egory. On Saturday, September 18th, join fellow PYC Members for a Fall Oyster Roast and Shag Fest on the back lawn as we celebrate with an outdoor concert, buffet and dance with Oysters Galore!

Marina Proper Fueling ProceduresFueling your vessel no matter the size tends to be a no brainer, you might say no different than fueling your automobile. Well there are slight differences & certain factors that you want to be aware of. When fueling your vessel, a lot of times your main objective is to top off your tanks, a misconception in some cases. If you top off your tanks there are a few factors many over look. -Topping off often leads to over fill, either through the vent or the main entry

resulting in fuel in the water. (Fuel nozzles are equipped with automatic shut offs but normally hap-pens to late.) Try to know the fuel capacity and estimate the amount needed.- Leave room for expansion (90% rule)! Expansion, a term that most have never heard of or possibly even considered. This happens on occasion when a vessel has been topped off with fuel and then pulled back to the slip. The vessel is then left for a period of time and with changes in temperature could cause expansion forcing the fuel out of the vent or in some cases the fuel cap, the result unex-plained fuel spill.Fueling your vessel in my opinion calls for education! Knowing what to do and what not to do could save your life as well as the environment!See the Fueling Instruction sign located on the fuel dock just below the GasBoy pedestal. If you have any question concerning Fuel Safety ask your Marina Staff and we will be happy to help.

Facts about Fueling (boatsafe.com) How much do you need? How much fuel you need to carry depends on the design of your boat and the intended use. In a sailing vessel, for instance, a 50 gallon tank of diesel feeding a 25 hp auxiliary engine cursing at 80 percent of top speed could propel a 33 foot sailboat 300 miles at 7 knots in calm weather. That same amount of fuel would take a twin engine 40 foot sportfisher only about 33 miles at 40 knots. This boat would need 450 gallons to cover 300 miles at that speed.Planing hulls need much more power than displacement hulls and use more fuel per mile. However their ability to carry fuel is limited because their planing ability is affected by weight. Many naval architects build in as little tankage as possible taking into consideration the design of the boat, reasonable usage and the distance between refueling stops in and around its normal area of operation. How much does it weigh? Gasoline weighs about 6.1 pounds per gallon. Diesel weights about 7.1 pounds per gallon. Both gasoline and diesel engines use about 0.6 pound of fuel per horsepower per hour. On average, diesel fuel contains about 140,000 BTUs per gallon or 10 percent more energy than the same volume of gasoline.
