Welding and cutting operations use fire or

combustion as a basic tool. The process is

very useful when properly controlled. However, it can be extremely destructive if not

performed correctly in the proper environment.

The work area must have a fireproof floor.

Work benches or tables used during welding or

cutting operations must have fireproof tops.

Oxygen/ Fuel CuttingUse heat resistant shields or other approved

material to protect nearby walls or unprotected

flooring from sparks and hot metal.

Keep an approved fire extinguisher of theproper size and type in the work area. Inspect

it regularly to ensure that it is in proper working

order. Know how to use the fire extinguisher.Move combustible materials away from the

work site. If you can not move them, protect

    them with fireproof covers.

    WARNING!Never perform welding or cutting

operations on a container that has heldtoxic, combustible or flammable liquids orvapors.

Never perform welding or cuttingoperations in an area containingcombustible vapors, flammable liquids, or

    explosive dust.

    Good housekeeping practices

improve the safety of any work

area. They are essential to the safetyof welding and cutting operations due

    to the potential hazards involved.

Keep all welding and cuttingapparatus clean and free of grease,

    oil, and other flammable substances.

    Warning!Never allow oxygen to contact

grease, oil, or other flammablesubstances. Although oxygen byitself will not burn, these substances

become highly explosive. They can ignite and burn violently in

    the presence of oxygen.

Ventilate welding and cutting work areasadequately.

Maintain sufficient air flow to preventaccumulation of explosive or toxicconcentrations of gases.

    Welding or cutting operations using

certain combinations of metals, coatings, and gases generate toxic fumes. Userespiratory protection equipment in these

    circumstances.

    Gas flames produce infrared radiation

which may have a harmful effect on

the skin and especially on the eyes.Select goggles or a mask with

tempered lenses shaded 5 or darker

to protect your eyes from injury andprovide good visibility of the work.

    Wear flame resistant clothing,

    protective gloves, sleeves, aprons

and safety shoes to protect skin andclothing from sparks and slag.

    Keep collars, sleeves and pockets

buttoned.DONOT roll up sleeves or cuff pants.

    Oxygen/ Acetylene Safety

    1. This process can KILL you and others.

Be sure to follow all safety rules.

    2. Be sure to completely shut down thecutting torch when the job is completed.

    3. Keep all oils and grease away from the

    regulators. When oxygen is compressed

with a petrochemical, it becomes highly

reactive and can explode. Imagine a

500lb bomb exploding in front of you. Will

there be any pieces to pick up?
