Oxbridge Evening On Monday, 23 September, we will be hosting the Windsor Learning Partnership Oxbridge Evening, in Room 63 from 6:00 to 7:00pm. The event is open to parents, carers and students in Years 10 to 12 who are interested in finding out about the Oxbridge system and application process. The presentation will be given by Dr. Joe Organ, the admissions officer at Brasenose College, Oxford.
OXFORD
CAMBRIDGE
Dear Parents and Carers It has been great to meet so many parents and carers over the last week at our Year 10 and Year 11 Partnership Evenings. The evenings are an opportunity to share key information about the year ahead and also how the school and parents can work together to support students in achieving their potential. If you were unable to attend the evening, we will be sharing further information with you. Next week we look forward to meeting parents of students in Year 9 and Year 12. You will be aware that we have been focusing on correct uniform over the last few weeks. Thank you for your support with uniform as it really is a team effort. As a reminder, Sixth Form skirts should not be of a stretchy material; and hair accessories should be black, white or green (including hijabs), and bandanas of any colour are not allowed. We will be returning to it throughout the year. This week, Year 13 have attended a session led by the group ‘Talking Therapies’, to support them in their preparations for their final assessments. Students explored issues such as examination stress and anxiety. The School Council hosted representatives from our catering company and were able to give feedback on the food and choice available in the school canteen. We recognised ‘Jeans for Genes’ Day on Friday with students and staff wearing denim for the day. The charity event is one which students take part in each year and money raised goes towards research and supporting children with genetic disorders. We will bring you an update on the total once we have it. This weekend, our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh participants are in action, completing their assessed expedition in the Chilterns. Students have worked hard and have planned their routes. We look forward to watching their progress on the Twitter feed over the weekend. Good luck to everyone involved and don’t forget your sun cream as the weather forecast looks good. Next week, we have further events. The postponed, ‘Night at the Musicals’, takes place on Monday, 23 September, at 6:30pm at The Windsor Boys’ School. Also on Monday, it is the annual Oxbridge Evening at Windsor Girls’ School, in Room 63, between 6:00pm and 7:00pm. We will be hosting Dr. Jo Organ from Brasenose College Oxford. Students and parents from Years 10 to 12 are welcome to attend. Next week we hold the Macmillan Coffee Morning which our Sixth Form Student Leaders are overseeing. If you would like to make a cake for the students to sell, we would really appreciate it; any donations can be brought to the main office on the morning of Friday, 27 September. All other students are encouraged to bring a small donation if they would like to purchase something from the cake stall. Mr P Griffiths and Mrs E O’Carroll Co-Headteachers

A reminder that skirts must be of a tailored material and non-stretchy, and just above the knee. Please change any unsuitable items for Monday. We are focusing on applications for apprenticeships, conservatoires, drama schools, art colleges and universities over the next two terms. The key is to get the applications sent off promptly, ideally by half term. This will maximise chances of lower university offers and will also allow more time to focus on Sixth Form courses. The Year 12 Partnership Evening takes place next week on Tuesday, 24 September, from 7:00pm. The evening will be in the Hall and we look forward to seeing you all there. Students are reminded that they must attend registration at 8:35am at Windsor Girls’ School, unless they have a period 1 lesson at The Windsor Boys’ School.
The Windsor Learning Partnership Annual Oxbridge Evening
Monday 23rd
September 6:00 – 7:00pm at The Windsor Girls’ School
Room 63
We are hosting an evening for parents and students from Years 10-12 who are interested in finding out about the Oxbridge system and application process. This is particularly important following recent changes to the linear A2 examinations. The admissions officer from Brasenose College Oxford will provide the focus for the evening. Dr Joe Organ will speak about the type of students Oxford and Cambridge hope to attract, the benefits of studying at such prestigious institutions and the admissions and interview processes. During the evening, parents and students will be given a presentation and also the opportunity to ask questions on practical aspects of university life, such as finance and accommodation. There will be a practical focus on what the students can be doing from Year 10 and upwards in order to improve their chances of attending these and other top universities. We are proud that as Windsor Learning Partnership we have successfully sent students to these prestigious universities in the past, and would encourage everyone even remotely considering applying to these universities to come to this evening to find out more.
Big Questions Should the UK legalise Euthanasia? A resounding "yes" was the simple answer to this week's big question. Most felt it was the individual's right to decide, although we discussed the problems that this causes as the active participation of another person is involved, so it cannot be only an individual's decision. We had a wide ranging discussion, with another full classroom of nearly 30 students. It is lovely to share thoughtful views and discuss such important issues.
TeamGym - Zoe Pugsley Congratulations to Zoe Pugsley, Year 11, who competed at the 2019 British Gymnastics Championships Series event at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool during the summer. Zoe, and her team from Heathrow Gymnastics Club, won the gold medal in the hotly contested Junior Women TeamGym competition.
Year 13 - Talking Therapies Students in Year 13 have been attending Stress Less workshops this term. The sessions were run by Talking Therapies, an organisation offering confidential support to adults living in Berkshire; they offer help for difficulties such as stress, low mood and worry. The workshops were tailored to meet the needs of students in their final year of KS5 and included the importance of achieving a balance in life, as well as guidance on how to manage stress and worry; students were taught square breathing technique and progressive muscle relaxation. Students are able to access Talking Therapies’ valuable free resources by registering either online (www.talkingtherpies.bershire.nhs.uk) or by telephone (0300 365 2000). You do not need to have an assessment; once registered, you will be given a log in code and can then access Silver Cloud, a comprehensive bank of resources and guidance. Access will be granted for up to a Year before the need to re-register. We hope students found the sessions insightful, reassuring and useful.
Friends of Windsor Girls’ School are primarily focussed on building a community of parents, carers, teachers, and staff. We recognise how difficult it is when starting at a new school or even just moving up to the Sixth Form and everyone knows how much it helps to have a network of individuals who are willing and available to offer expertise, advice, answers and support each other. We would like to invite all parents, carers. staff and teachers to our first Drinks evening on Wednes-day, 23 October 2019, at The Piper Art Bar, 51 Peascod Street, SL4 1DE, 7.30pm onwards, to help us get to know each other. Parking is available close by at Victoria Street Car Park. Please feel free to pop in at any time. We look forward to meeting many of you there. Please follow us on Twitter @FoWGS or Facebook-Friends of Windsor Girls’ School to keep in touch.
