This year we are celebrating 20 years of Venturefest Oxford - a real milestone in Oxfordshire’s celebrated history of innovation and entrepreneurship.
This year, in particular, Venturefest20 is also celebrating the amazing cutting-edge technology that is taking place in all corners of our county. To ensure it is showcased to maximum effect, we
have streamlined the event to focus on four key sectors: Space, Autonomous Vehicles, Digital Health and Quantum Computing. We hope you will discover the technologies behind them, the applications they open-up and the opportunities and challenges they offer. You will see how they are interdependent and will, ultimately, change our lives for the better.
I’d like to thank you all for supporting us again this year. I’d also like to thank the Board, our partners,
sponsors and exhibitors and, in particular, all those who have put so much time, passion and energy into organising this event. I must also thank our host, Oxford Brookes University, for so generously opening up their inspirational new building to us.
What better way can there be for me to bow out at the end of what I know will be our best event yet. Stunning exhibitions and demonstrations, talks and presentations to beguile and astound you, new businesses to pique your interest and like-minded people to talk to all day. I have been overwhelmed by your gracious comments, support and good wishes, and I’d just like to say it’s been a pleasure - thank you all!

At a glance
A modern university like Oxford Brookes has a remit that reaches far beyond the education and training of students and the supply of a talented workforce to sustain UK and international business. It also goes beyond research purely for the acquisition of knowledge and understanding.
Oxford Brookes is about sharing its work with business and the wider community. Our academics and researchers deliver innovative thinking, help provide solutions to the challenges facing businesses today, and improve the lives of people through better healthcare, social understanding, and social cohesion.
This sharing and collaboration takes place in a wide variety of forms, and in our conversations with business we are always discovering new ways to partner and collaborate. From areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and clinical training and practice, through to arts and culture, economic impact assessments, and developing bespoke training and mentoring programmes for Continuing Professional Development, Oxford Brookes contributes to the growth and success of the UK economy and social progress.
The Research and Business Development Office (RBDO) at Oxford Brookes is the front door for organisations seeking
expertise to help them solve problems and make the most of commercial opportunities. The team offers a wealth of business expertise in its own right and acts as a bridge to lead you to the right academic research team to suit your project needs.
The RBDO team can also contribute a wide variety of the general skills and experience outside the specific research aims of a project. We advise the university and commercial partners on:
• Intellectual property, protecting the rights of innovative thinkers and creators,
• Licensing outputs or research methods developed during projects,
• Applying for grant funding through schemes like Innovate UK’s Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programmes.
INNOVATION, EXPERTISE AND TALENT. Oxford Brookes can help make a successful business an inspirational business

Editorial
Pitching for Success John Henry Brookes Lecture Theatre
Pitching for Success will be to an audience that includes investors, support organisations and individuals. Each session will include a panel made up of professional funding organisations, including speakers from crowd investment (Peer2Peer, equity, loans), venture capital and public sector funding. Each investor panel speaker will give an overview of what they look for when investing or funding a company followed by Q&A with the audience.
After all the presentations are completed, the excitement continues as the panel will vote to select a winning company from each of the sessions. Those winners will be invited to pitch to the audience in the final session at 15:45, who will decide the winner of the £1,000 cash prize. All pitching companies will be eligible to win one of the support packages on offer. Package details available on the website.
As well as the live pitches and investor panels, the companies from both sessions will be available in the John Henry Brookes Lecture Theatre Foyer for networking.

AN EXCITING NEW CHAPTER FOR THE OXFORD TRUSTThe Oxford Trust is an independent charitable trust, founded in 1985 by entrepreneurs Sir Martin and Lady (Audrey) Wood. Our mission is to encourage the pursuit of science and enterprise.
We run a variety of programmes across three key areas: enterprise, education and engagement. While the Trust focuses on enterprise, our education and engagement programmes are delivered by Science Oxford.
The Trust is passionate about supporting innovation. We own the Oxford Centre for Innovation (OCFI), which provides flexible office and networking spaces for over 240 innovators at any one time. We also create and support projects that put science and enterprise at the heart of our region, including Venturefest Oxford, the science and ideas festival, IF Oxford, and the Enterprise Awards.
We are now developing a new innovation centre at Stansfeld Park in Headington, which will open in 2019. Named after our patrons, the Wood Centre for Innovation (WCFI) will provide 25,000sq-ft of flexible office space for early stage science and technology companies and will be a hub for entrepreneurs. The adjoining Science Oxford Centre will be the UK’s first integrated indoor-outdoor science education centre dedicated to primary aged children, their teachers and families. Our new development will open an exciting new chapter for the Trust and will enable us to engage more young people in science; inspire more teachers; and add capacity to Oxfordshire’s dynamic innovation ecosystem.

Useful info
TRANSFER DEALSAre you looking for support with an innovative project within your company?
Do you need external expertise to take your organisation to the next level?
Do you want to recruit the best new talent to your business, and know they are supported by academic experts?
The government’s flagship knowledge transfer programme, known as Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP), is designed to help your company to grow and develop by accessing knowledge and expertise held by UK universities.
Projects are between 1 and 3 years long, and the scheme works by employing a talented and ambitious graduate (called the KTP Associate) to be placed within your organisation to deliver your project, supported by an academic team who have the expertise that you need. Previous examples include flood risk mitigation; production engineering; energy management for sustainable construction and low carbon design.
If your application is successful, the KTP grant will cover 67% of costs for an SME, and 50% for a large company. (The total cost of a KTP project is approximately £75,000 per year.) The project budget includes the Associate’s salary; 0.5 days per week of the academic team’s time; and contributions to equipment and consumables, training and development; and travel and subsistence; as well as overhead costs to the university.
Oxford Brookes University has a long and proud history of delivering KTP projects with both SMEs and larger organisations, some of who are internationally recognisable; and a number of our KTPs have won national awards.
Our relationship with you starts right at the beginning of the KTP process – we guide you through the application stage, and then work with you to recruit your KTP Associate. Once the project starts, we also provide administrative support throughout, in addition to the academic expertise that you need.
Find out moreTo find out more about how Knowledge Transfer Partnerships can make an impact on your business, please contact Oxford Brookes University’s KTP Manager, Anna Verghese, at [email protected].

“Venturefest has become a remarkable annual event for many small and large companies, entrepreneurs, innovators, venture capitalists, angel investors and philanthropists.
In parallel the University of Oxford has sharpened its focus on translation, commercialisation, entrepreneurship and creating benefits for societies across the world. Indeed last year the university created more new companies and attracted more research funding than any other university in the country.
It has recently built two new innovation centres, and has now set a goal of creating several billion pound companies in Oxfordshire, in the next ten years. This will only be achieved through close working with existing stakeholders in this vibrant Oxfordshire ecosystem, represented by Venturefest attendees”.
Professor Chas Bountra, from September 2018 the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Innovation, University of Oxford
