The vehicle fitted with the airbags hassuitable indications on steering wheeland on dash board. The word ‘AIR BAG’is embossed on the airbag covers.

Provided that the occupants arecorrectly seated with seat belts properlyworn, front airbags will provide additionalprotection to the chest and facial areaof the front seat occupants in the eventof severe frontal collision.

WARNING

• The airbag is a supplementaryrestraint system that providesADDITIONAL protection in a severe

collision only. It does NOT replacethe need to wear a seat belt. Relyingon the airbags alone could lead tosevere injuries in a collision. Theairbags work with your seat belt torestrain you properly. Always wearyour seat belts even though youhave airbags.

• To ensure correct deployment of theairbags, it is essential that

obstructions are not allowed tointervene between airbag and theoccupant. Do not put anything onor around the front airbag covers orattempt to open them. Occupantsmay damage the airbags and theycould be injured because the airbagsare no longer functional. Theseprotective covers for the airbagcushions are designed to open onlywhen the airbags are inflating.

SPECIAL FEATURESAIRBAG (SRS)

Airbag warning label:

Airbag warning information is printed onthe co-driver’s sun visors.

Airbag SRS warningindicator:The air bag warning symbol comes onfor approximately 3 seconds when theignition is turned ‘ON’ and goes ‘OFF’.

WARNINGIf it remain ‘ON’ or blinks, take yourvehicle to the nearest TATA AuthorisedService Centre.

Airbag SRS system components:

The airbag ‘SRS’ system consists of thefollowing:

• Airbag ‘SRS’ ECU (Electronic ControlUnit)

• ‘SRS’ Indicator• Driver Airbag• Front Passenger Airbag• Front Impact Sensors• Driver and Front Passenger Seat Belt

Pretensioners with load limiters• Electrical Wiring Harness

Airbag ‘SRS’ working:

In the event of a collision, airbag SRSECU monitors the rate of decelerationinduced by the collision, through impactsensors, to determine whether theairbags should be deployed.

• Seating position plays an importantrole in minimizing the risk ofaccidental injury. In addition toproperly worn seat belts, both driverand front passenger should adjusttheir seat to provide the maximumpractical distance from the frontairbags. Airbags need room toinflate. Being too close to thesteering wheel or dashboard duringairbag deployment could causeserious injury.

Page 86: OWNER'S MANUAL & SERVICE BOOK

76

SPECIAL FEATURES

NOTEThe airbag ‘SRS’ is not designed tooperate as a result of roll - over, rearcollisions, minor frontal or sideimpacts nor will it operate as a resultof heavy braking or driving overbumps and pot holes.

Airbag inflation is virtually instantaneousand occurs with considerable force, accompanied by loud noise. The inflatedairbag, together with seat belts restraintsystem, limit the movement of anoccupant, thereby reducing the risk ofinjury.

When an airbag inflates, you may seesome smoke-like particles. The particlesare a normal by-product of the processthat generates the nontoxic gas usedfor airbag inflation. These airborneparticles may irritate the skin, eyes, nose, or throat. If you have skin or eyeirritation, rinse the area with cool water. For nose or throat irritation, move tofresh air. If the irritation continues, see

your doctor. Also sometimes the smokecan cause breathing problems forpeople with a history of asthma or otherbreathing trouble. In such cases getfresh air promptly.

After inflation airbags deflateimmediately thus providing a gradualcushioning effect for the occupant. It isnot advisable to drive your vehicle afterthe airbags have been deployed. If youare involved in another collision, theairbags will not be in place to protectyou.

WARNINGAfter inflation, some airbagcomponents are hot. DO NOT touchthem.

AIRBAG (SRS)

WARNINGAirbag SRS fitted in your vehicledoes not require any regularmaintenance, however ALWAYScontact your TATA authoriseddealer if:• The warning indicator fails to

illuminate for 3 seconds whenignition switch is turned ON.

• The warning indicator remains ONbeyond 3 seconds after ignitionswitch is turned ON.

• The warning indicator illuminatesafter the engine is started or whilethe vehicle is running.

• An airbag inflates• The front or side of the vehicle is

damaged, even if airbag has notinflated.

• Any part of airbag module covershows sign of cracking or damage.

WARNING• Do not fit any bull bars or other

after market accessories at frontside of the vehicle. This mayaffect the proper deployment ofthe airbag.

• Never place any loose object on thedashboard in front of co-driver seat.It may result an injury from the objectwhen it is forced towards you by theinflating airbag.

• Do not cover the steering wheel ordashboard with an object, whichmay prevent the proper deploymentof the airbag.

• Never try to repair any componentor part of the SRS yourself. Anyinterference in the system couldcause malfunction and seriousinjury. All work on SRS should beperformed by TATA authoriseddealership.

SPECIAL FEATURES

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)(if equipped):In addition to the conventional hydraulicbrake system, an Anti-lock BrakingSystem (ABS) incorporating ElectronicBrake Distribution (EBD) is provided onthis vehicle (ABS version).During normal braking the ElectronicBrake Distribution (EBD) limits the levelof braking force transmitted to the rearwheels. ‘EBD’ moderates the brakingforces at the rear axle depending uponthe load condition and available tractionat the rear wheels.During emergency braking the Anti-lockBraking System (ABS) regulates thebraking force for each individual wheel. In doing so the system optimizes thelevel of braking being achieved whilemaintaining a stable, controllablevehicle. Where ‘EBD’ only acts on therear wheels the ABS is able to controleach wheel individually. Both the ‘EBD’and the ‘ABS’ functions work bycontinuously monitoring and comparing

the four individual wheel speeds andreacts when a wheel is detected asloosing traction with the road surface, which happens when a wheel tends tolock during braking. To avoid the wheels from locking andprevent the vehicle from skidding ABSis provided. It prevents the wheels fromlocking and maintains the steerability ofthe vehicle thereby helping the driver tomaintain stability of the vehicle whilebringing it to a stop in the safest possibleway.

NOTEDurning cranking ABS, EBD warninglamps might glow for a few seconds. In order to obtain the maximum benefitfrom your ‘ABS’ system in anemergency situation, do not attemptto modulate the brake pressure bypumping the brake pedal. Pressbrake pedal continuously as hard aspossible or as the situation demands. When ABS intervention is necessary

the warning lamp will not illuminatebut the driver will feel the brake pedalpulsating and may hear an audiblesound from the modulator indicatingthat ABS control is taking place.

ABS and EBDwarning lights:The ABS and EBD warning lamps willilluminate for a system check forapproximately few seconds, when theignition is switched ‘ON’. Both lamps willthen go ‘OFF’ to indicate the system ishealthy. As the EBD lamp is shared withthe park brake lamp & brake fluid levelwarning, so this will not go ‘OFF’ untilthe park brake is released and fluid levelin reservoir is approximately at MAX.level.

CAUTIONIn case of an ‘ABS’ or ‘EBD’ failurethe warning lamp will illuminate ininstrument cluster. In that case pleasepullover the vehicle to the side of roadand switch off the ignition and restart.

possible which is constrained bythe road conditions, vehicle’s tyresand brakes.

• The additional control provided by,‘ABS’ must never be exploited in adangerous or reckless mannerwhich could jeopardise the safetyof driver, other road users orpedestrians.

If the fault persists, your brakesystem may not be working properly, hence it is dangerous to drive thevehicle. However if you feel and judgethat it is safe to drive, then take thevehicle carefully to the nearest TATAauthorised service station for repair.Otherwise get your vehicle towed asdriving the vehicle with this fault couldbe dangerous.

WARNING• ‘ABS’ is an aid to retain steering

control and stability while braking.

• ‘ABS’ will not prevent accidentsresulting from excessive corneringspeeds, following another vehicletoo closely or aquaplaning, i.e.where a layer of water preventsadequate contact between tire androad surface

• ‘ABS’ will not improve brakingperformance or stopping distancebeyond that which is physically

TIPS TO IMPROVE FUEL ECONOMY:Your vehicle’s fuel economy is mainlydependent on your style of driving.Tooperate your vehicle as economicallyas possible, use the following drivingsuggestions.Avoid excessive Idling :Switch off the engine, if you have to stopfor more than a minute.Avoid fast starts and unnecessarystops :Start off slowly from traffic lights or stopsigns to prevent increased fuelconsumption and shortening of enginelife. Avoid unnecessary deceleration(stopping or slowing down) and thenacceleration which uses more fuel.Always maintain clean air-cleaner :The amount of air supplied will reducedue to clogged air-cleaner, resulting inwaste of fuel due to incompletecombustion.Replace the air filter element as per theservicing instructions label on air filterbody. We do not recommend to clean

the air filter element before thereplacement period , however if filterelement is to be cleaned ( in case ofvehicle operation in dusty condition )procedure indicated on servicing label tobe followed.Get the air filter elementreplaced / cleaned at a TATA MOTORSAuthorised Service Center.Avoid incorrect tyre pressures :Ensure proper tyre inflation. If your vehicletyres are under-inflated, it results inincreased rolling resistance of the tyres, leading to wastage of fuel. Check tyrepressure and inflate the tyres accordinglyonce a week.PROPER DRIVING PRACTICES :Keep a safe distance from other vehiclesto avoid braking suddenly. Anticipatestops and avoid abrupt stops, this willdecrease fuel consumption and increasethe life of vehicle’s brake and tyres.Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal. It does not allow full engine power to betransmitted to the vehicle and reducesclutch life.

FUEL ECONOMY & RUNNING-IN INSTRUCTIONS

RUNNING-IN INSTRUCTIONS :

During running-in period i.e. first 1500-1800 km. follow the running-ininstructions given below :1. After starting the engine do not rev it

BRAKES & BRAKING

BRAKES AND BRAKING :

The brake system on your vehicle is anadvanced dual circuit, vertical splitvacuum assisted hydraulic brakesystem.

It is equipped with:

Brake booster: This assists the driverin braking with an ergonomic pedalforce on brake pedal.Tandem Master Cylinder, for fail safebraking.Twin pot calipers in front and singlepot callipers in rear, for efficientenergy absorption.

If one circuit fails then the pedal effortwill be lesser, pedal travel will be longerand stopping distance will be more. Atthe same time, brake indication lightwould glow on dashboard.

If you observe any abnormality in brakesystem, contact your nearest TATAAuthorized Service Centre. In case offailure of vacuum supply to the brakebooster the vehicle can still be stoppedwith a higher pedal effort. In case ofvacuum failure or brake circuit failure, slow down the vehicle by shifting to lowergear and lifting your foot from theaccelerator pedal. Pull to the side of theroad as soon as it is safe. Put your footon brake pedal to apply brake. Do notride with brakes applied as they mayoverheat and the performance may beimpaired. The brake lights may confusethe other road users behind you. Useengine to assist the brakes by shiftingto a lower gear and lifting your foot fromaccelerator pedal.

Constant application of brakes whilegoing down the hill builds heat andreduces braking efficiency.

Check your brakes after driving throughdeep water. Apply the brakes moderatelyto feel that they are normal. If not, apply

them gently and frequently until they do.With wet brakes you should be extracautious and alert while driving.

WARNINGBrake system failure is hazardous andneeds immediate attention. In theevent of brake system failure,a) Have your vehicle towed ORb) Be extremely cautious in case youhave to drive the vehicle.

4X4 OPERATION

4 X 4 OPERATION : ( If applicable )

On four wheel drive vehicles transfercase is fitted after the gear box for drivingfront live axle along with rear axle.

The electrical switch is provided on thefloor console to select the mode.

4L - All four wheels are driven andtransfer case operates at 2.48:1speed reduction ratio.

Four wheel drive operation :In 2-H mode, engine powers the rear twowheels of the vehicle and front wheelsare merely pushed. It will provideoptimal smoothness and fuel economyat high speeds. In four wheel drive mode (4H or 4L) therear as well as the front axles getgeared to the engine throughtransfercase and transmit the enginepower to all four wheels. This providesincreased traction to the vehicle. In 4H mode, the transmitted enginetorque and vehicle speed remain thesame as in 2H.However, when you shift to 4L modeengine torque is multiplied and vehiclemoves at low speed in the same gearswith increased traction. 4L mode isprovided for negotiating sharp gradientsor driving through loose soil / sand.

The following three selector positionsare provided on the knob :

2H - Only two rear wheels are driven andtransfer case operates at 1:1 ratio.

Night driving :

Refer to some important instructionsgiven below which are important fromroad safety point of view especially fornight driving.

Given instructions are related to theusage of head lights for night driving.

Because of decreased vision at night andthe glare of oncoming headlights, nightdriving is more demanding and requiresgreater concentration than daytimedriving. Unfamiliar roads and unexpectedsituations are more likely to causehazardous driving conditions.

DRIVING IN ADVERSE CONDITIONS

Driving on a rainy day :

Check brakes, steering andwindows.Check tyres for wear and tyrepressure.Check wiper blades for properfunctioning.Avoid harsh braking and sharp turns. Itmay cause loss of control and lead to askid. For slowing down, shift to lower gearsand brake gently.Keep head lights ON if visibility is poor.

After driving through water applybrakes several times to dry liners andto regain original braking.

Do not attempt to start the engine ifvehicle gets flooded due to water. Towthe vehicle to a safe place.

Take the vehicle to nearest TATAauthorised workshop to check entry ofwater in cylinders.

If water has entered the engine or gearbox, transfercase etc., replace thelubricant.

Get the starter and alternator checked.

DRIVING IN ADVERSE CONDITIONS

Ensure safe driving in several ways :• Keep the windshield clean.• Make sure the headlights are working

properly and the lenses are keptclean.

• Check regularly for correct aim/alignment.

• Maintain a speed such that you canstop within illuminated distance ofhead lamps.

• Slow down when oncoming trafficapproaches or when vehicle is closeto a curve. Dip the head lamp foroncoming traffic during night driving.

• If visibility is greatly reduced, use theedge line as a guide to maintain thelane of travel. If there is no edge line, use the centerline to guide thevehicle.

• Use head lamp main/dip beam to alertother road users on turns/cross roadsetc.

• Use side indicators for lane changeor turning. Put ‘ON’ hazard warning

switch in case of hazardous parkingor if your vehicle is disabled to warnthe passing traffic.

1. HeadlightsSwitch ‘ON’ the headlights when drivingbetween sunset and sunrise or any othertime when there is not enough daylightto see a person wearing dark clothing ata distance of 100 meters. Do not drivewith head lamp ‘ON’ during the day.2. High BeamHigh-beam headlights are stronger andhave to be used in dark areas whichrequire more lighting. One can use high beam lights on anyroad, even if there are streetlights. Highbeam headlights are only designedto be used when other vehicles arenot around. Always dim the highbeam headlights to low beam for on-coming vehicles as well overtakingvehicles.Dim the headlights to low beamwhen vehicles approach within 200

meters and while driving 200 metersor less behind other vehicles.3. Fog LightsFront fog lights are designed to illuminatethe road in fog, snowfall, rainstorms, ordust clouds. They can be identified bythe narrow pattern of light emitted, whichshines low and wide to see the roadclose to vehicle in fog.The rear fog lights help to alert thevehicles behind.Drivers must not use front or rear foglights unless driving in fog or otherhazardous weather conditionscausing reduced visibility. Switch ‘OFF’the fog lights once visibility is clearas they can blind other drivers.4. Extreme ConditionsIn extreme conditions, such as heavyrain, fog etc. put the headlights to lowbeam. High beam in fog will reflect thelight, making it difficult to see. In poorvisibility, turn ‘ON’ the hazard lights toalert other vehicles on road.

DRIVING

94

DRIVING IN ADVERSE CONDITIONS

Climbing sharp gradients on loosesurfaces:

has to be done cautiously to avoid lossof traction.

Never move the vehicle diagonally acrossa hill. The danger is in loss of tractionand sideways slippage, possiblyresulting in tipping over. If unavoidable, choose as mild an angle as possible andkeep the vehicle moving.

If the wheels start to slip within few feetof the end of the climb, motion can bemaintained by swinging the steeredwheels left and right, thereby providingincreased grip.

If the vehicle stalls or losses headwaywhile climbing a steep hill, make a quickshift to reverse and allow the vehicle tomove back with the control of enginecompression.

Start off smoothly in any suitable gear.Apply power smoothly so that there isno loss of traction by over-revving of theengine.

Choose as smooth a slope as possibleand select the appropriate gear so thatgear changing in the middle of the climbis not required.

Changing gears in the middle of the climbcan cause loss of momentum andengine stalling. Shifting to a lower gear

Descending sharp gradients :

Depending on the severity of thegradient, shift into appropriate gear. Useengine braking judiciously without over-revving the engine.

Brake application under such situationsshould be done very smoothly to avoidloss of control. Select appropriate gearso that gear changing or clutchdisengagement is not involved whiledescending the gradient.

Warm up the engine to normal operatingtemperature.Turn it off and wait for at least 30 minutesfor the oil to return to the oil pan.Be sure the vehicle is on a level surface.Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, andreinsert if fully.Pull it out again and examine the oil level.it should be between ‘Min’ and ‘Max’level. If not, top up with recommendedengine oil.

Replace air filter element as per theservicing instructions label on air filterbody. We do not recommend to cleanthe air filter element before thereplacement period , however if filterelement is to be cleaned (in case ofvehicle operation in dusty condition)procedure indicated on servicing label tobe followed. Get the air filter elementreplaced at a TATA MOTORS AuthorisedService Center.

Always use a genuine air filterelement.

NOTE• When a vehicle is driven under dusty

conditions, frequent cleaning andreplacement of the air-cleaner elementis necessary.

• Clogged air-cleaners lead to increasedresistance to air intake whichincreases fuel consumption. Using lowpressure compressed air, blow off duston the air cleaner element. If the aircleaner element appears to bechoked, replace it with a new one.

Intercooler cools the hot air coming fromthe turbocharger before entering theintake manifold. It does not require anymaintenance, however it can be cleanedexternally by blowing compressed air

CAUTIONWhile cleaning, ensure thatintercooler fins are not damaged. If thefins get damaged, it could lead to lossof performance and subsequentfailure.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER :The catalytic converter is fitted on yourvehicle to reduce exhaust pollution. Thecatalytic converter will quickly heat upafter starting to ensure that it operatescorrectly during the warm up phase ofthe engine.

The catalytic converter does not requireany special maintenance however, following precaution should be taken forthe effective functioning of the converterand to avoid damage to the converter.

1 It is mandatory to use diesel fuelwith low sulphur content (Referrecommended fuels). Use of anyother diesel fuel can increase thepollutants.

2 Avoid parking the vehicle overinflammable materials, such as dryleaves, grass, etc., as the exhaustsystem is hot enough to initiate“FIRE”.

Maintenance of Catalytic Converter

Flush the Catalytic Converter by givingfull throttle (4 to 5 times) in standingcondition of vehicle on daily basis.

In addition to this it is recommended torun the vehicle at high speed (80 to 100kmph) for few km as this will help to flushthe carbon soot deposits from exhaustsystem and catalytic converter. Highspeed running of the vehicle may be doneperiodically to avoid chocking of catalyticconverter.

CAUTION• Avoid push start or tow-starting the

vehicle. (Use jump leads).• Avoid long (not more than ten sec.)

repeat (not more than three times)starting of the Vehicle.

Check for inflation and condition of yourvehicle tyres periodically.

Inflation:

Over inflation of tyres makes the vehicleride bumpy and harsh. Tyres are moreprone to uneven wear and damage fromroad hazards.Under inflated tyres reduce your comfortin vehicle handling and are prone tofailures due to high temperature. Theyalso cause uneven wear and more fuelconsumption.

NOTETyre pressure should be checked in"cold" condition. Hot tyres tend toshow a slightly higher value.

CAUTION1. Every time you check inflation

pressure, you should also examinetyres for damage, trapping of foreignobjects in the treads and wear.

2. If you notice bumps or bulges in thetread or the side of the tyre, replacethe tyre.

3. If there are cuts, splits or cracks inthe side of the tyre, replace the tyre.

Check the pressure in the tyres whenthey are cold.Proper inflation of tyres gives you the bestcombination of riding comfort handling, tyre life and better fuel efficiency.

Repairing a Tyre:Mark the tyre position suitably (if originalcolour dot mark is not visible) withrespect to valve stem hole to ensure thatthe tyre is refitted in the original locationon the wheel rim.Ensure that balancing weights are notdisturbed during removal of tyres.Check the balance weight prior to theremoval of the tyre. If found loose, markits location on the rim and refit properly.Balance the wheel after everydismantling and assembly of tyre on thewheel rim.Tyre Rotation:To equalize wear on each tyre, rotatethem periodically as shown in the figure.Regular tyre rotation will also preventabnormal wear.

WHEELS & TYRES

Wheel alignment:

Incorrect wheel alignment causesexcessive and uneven tyre wear. Checkwheel alignment at specified intervals.Wheel alignment values are given below:

Front RearCaster 3° + 30’ -Camber 0°+ 30’ -Toe Out - -Toe In 2 - 5 mm -

Wheel Balancing :

Wheels of your vehicle are balanced forbetter ride comfort and longer tyre life. Itis recommended to balance the wheel, whenever tyre is removed from the rim.

Radial tyubeless tyres :Radial tubeless tyres have followingadvantages over conventional tube tyres:• Lesser heat generation.• Improves dynamic stability.• Lower rolling resistance and lesser

weight, which improves fuelefficiency.

• Better safety

Tyre rotation must be carried out atspecified intervals as per serviceschedule.

4. Replace tyre if excessive tread wearor non uniform tyre wear is noticed.

BATTERY :

WHEELS & TYRES , BATTERY

Special care for tubeless tyres :• Tubeless tyres are coated with

impermeable layer of rubber frominside which holds the air inside thetyre. Do not scratch inside of tubelesstyre with metallic or sharp object. Thismay cause gradual loss of air.

• If wheel rim gets damaged in theservice, get the wheel rim repaired/replaced immediately. Running thevehicle with damaged rim may causedeflation of tyre and subsequentdislodging of tyre from rim.

• Maintain recommended tyrepressure. Over inflated tyre maycause puncture or bursting of tyre.

NOTELife and wear pattern of tyres dependson various parameters like tyrepressure, wheel alignment, wheelbalancing, tyre rotation, etc. It alsolargely depends on vehicle speed, loadcarried, usage, driving habits, roadconditions, etc.

Check the battery for proper electrolytelevel and corrosion on the terminals.1. Check the battery for electrolyte level

against the marking on the batteryouter case.

2. Check the battery terminals forcorrosion (a white or yellowishpowder). To remove it, cover theterminals with a solution of bakingsoda. It will bubble up and turn brown.

3. When this stops, wash it off with plainwater. Dry off the battery with a clothor paper towel.

4. Coat the terminals with petroleum jellyto prevent future corrosion.

5. Use a proper wrench to loosen andremove cables from the terminals.

Always disconnect the negative (-ve)cable first and reconnect it last.

Clean the battery terminals with aterminal cleaning tool or wire brush.

Reconnect and tighten the cables, coatthe terminals with petroleum jelly.

Ensure that the battery securelymounted.

If you need to connect the battery to acharger, disconnect the battery negativecable to prevent damage to your vehicle’selectrical system.

WARNING• During normal operation, the battery

generates gas which is explosive innature. A spark or open flame cancause the battery to explodecausing very serious injuries.
