L GENERAL OPERATION* Read, understand, and follow all

instructions on the machine and in the

manual(s) before starting. Be thoroughlyfamiliar with the controls and the properuse of the machine before starting.Do not put hands or feet near or underrotating parts. Keep clear of the dis-charge opening at all times.Only allow responsible individuals, whoare familiar with the instructions, to oper-ate the machine.Clear the area of objects such as rocks,toys, wire, bones, sticks, etc., whichcould be picked up and thrown by theblade.

Be sure the area is clear of other peoplebefore mowing. Stop machine if anyoneenters the area.

Do not operate the mower when bare-foot or wearing open sandals. Alwayswear substantial foot wear.

Do not pull mower backwards unlessabsolutely necessary. Always look downand behind before and while movingbackwards.

Do not operate the mower withoutproper guards, plates, grass catcher orother safety protective devices in place.See manufacturer's instructions for

proper operation and installation ofaccessories. Only use accessories ap-proved by the manufacturer.Stop the blade(s) when crossing graveldrives, walks, or roads.Stop the engine (motor) whenever youleave the equipment, before cleaning themower or unclogging the chute.Shut the engine (motor) off and wait untilthe blade comes to complete stop beforeremoving grass catcher.Mow only in daylight or good artificiallight.Do not operate the machine while underthe influence of alcohol or drugs.Never operate machine in wet grass.Always be sure of your footing: keep afirm hold on the handle and walk; neverrun.

Disengage the self-propeJled mech-anism or drive clutch on mowers so

equipped before starting the engine(motor).If the equipment should start to vibrateabnormally, stop the engine (motor) andcheck immediately for the cause. Vibra-tion is generally a warning of trouble.Always wear safety goggles or safetyglasses with side shields when operating

JL SLOPE OPERATION

Slopes are a major factor related to slipand fall accidents which can result in

severe injury. All slopes require extra cau-tion. If you feel uneasy on a slope, do notmow it.

DO:

Mow across the face of slopes: neverup and down. Exercise extreme cautionwhen changing direction on slopes.Remove obstacles such as rocks, treelimbs, etc.Watch for holes, ruts, or bumps. Tailgrass can hide obstacles.

DO NOT:

'_ Do not trim near drop-offs, ditches orembankments. The operator couJd losefooting or balance.

,, Do not trim excessively steep slopes.,, Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced foot-

ing could cause slipping.

Tragic accidents can occur if the operatoris not alert to the presence of children.Children are often attracted to the machine

and the mowing activity. Never assumethat children will remain where you lastsaw them.

Keep children out of the trimming areaand under the watchfuJ care of another

responsible adult.Be alert and turn machine off if childrenenter the area.

Before and while walking backwards,look behind and down for small children.

Never allow children to operate the ma-chine.Use extra care when approaching blindcorners, shrubs, trees, or other objectsthat may obscure vision.

Use extra care in handling gasoline andother fuels. They are flammable andvapors are explosive.-Use only an approved container.- Never remove gas cap or add fuelwith the engine running.Allow engine to cool before refueling.Do not smoke.

-Never refuel the machine indoors.- Never store the machine or fuelcontainer inside where there is an

open flame, such as a water heater.Never run a machine inside a closed area.

Never make adjustments or repairs withthe engine (motor) running. Disconnect thespark plug wire, and keep the wire awayfrom the plug to prevent accidental starting.mower.

Keep nuts and bolts, especially bladeattachment bolts, tight and keep equip-ment in good condition.Never tamper with safety devices. Checktheir proper operation regularly.Keep machine free of grass, leaves, orother debris build-up. Clean oil or fuel spill-age. Allow machine to cool before storing.Stop and inspect the equipment if youstrike an object. Repair, if necessary,before restarting.Never attempt to make wheel height adjust-ments while the engine (motor)is running.

Grass catcher components are subjectto wear, damage, and deterioration,which could expose moving parts orallow objects to be thrown. Frequentlycheck components and replace withmanufacturer's recommended parts,when necessary.Mower blades are sharp and can cut.Wrap the blade(s) or wear gloves, anduse extra caution when servicing them.Do not change the engine governor set-ting or overspeed the engine.

The operation of any lawnmower can result in foreignobjects thrown into theeyes, which can result insevere eye damage. Always

HOWTO USEYOUR LAWN MOWERENGINESPEED

The engine speed was set at the factoryfor optimumperformance. Speed is notadjustable.ENGINE ZONE CONTROL

_,CAUTION: Federal regulations requirean engine control to be installed on thislawn mower in order to minimize therisk of blade contact injury. Do not underany circumstances attempt to defeat thefunction of the operator control. The bladeturns when the engine is running.• Your lawn mower is equipped with an

operator presence control bar whichrequires the operator to be positionedbehind the lawn mower handle to startand operate the lawn mower.

DRIVE CONTROL

• Self-propelling is controlled by hold-ing the operator presence control bardown to the handle and pulling the drivecontrol bar up to the handle. The closerto the handle the bar is pulled, the fasterthe unit will travel.

• Forward motion will stop when either theoperator presence control bar or drivecontrol bar are released. To stop forwardmotion without stopping engine, releasethe drive control bar only. Hold operatorpresence control bar down against handleto continue mowing without self-propelling.

NOTE: If after releasing the drive controlthe mower will not roll backwards, pushthe mower forward slightly to disengagedrive wheels.• To keep drive control engaged when

turning corners, push down on thehandle to lift the front wheels off theground while turning lawn mower.

DRIVE CONTROL ADJUSTMENT

Over time, the drive control system maybecome "loose", resulting in decreasedspeed. There is a thumbscrew on theunderside of the drive control housing toincrease tension on the drive cable. Pro-ceed as follows:

1. Turn unitoff and disconnect spark plugwire from spark plug.

2. Rotate thumbscrewcounter-clockwiseto tightenthe drive cable.

3. Operate mower to test drive speed.4. If conditionfails to improveafter the

above steps (forwardspeed remainsthe same), your drive belt is worn andshould be replaced.

NOTE: If mower begins to "creep" forward,the drive cable is too tight. Rotate thumb-screw clockwiseto loosen drive cable.

TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHT

Raise wheels for low cut and lower wheelsfor high cut, adjust cutting height to suityour requirements. Medium position isbest for most lawns.

• To change cutting height, squeeze ad-juster lever toward wheel. Move wheelup or down to suit your requirements. Besure all wheels are in the same setting.

NOTE: Adjuster is properly positionedwhen plate tab inserts into hole in lever.Also, 9-position adjusters (if so equipped)allow lever to be positioned between theplate tabs.

Your lawn mower was shipped ready to beused as a mulcher. To convert to bagging:• Lift rear door of the lawn mower and

place the grass catcher frame hooksonto the door pivot pins.

• To convert to mulching operation, re-move grass catcher and close rear door.

CAUTION: Do not run your lawn mowerwithout rear door closed, clipping deflectoror approved grass catcher in place. Neverattempt to operate the lawn mower withthe rear door removed or propped open.

2. Remove grass catcher with clippingsfrom under lawn mower handle.

3. Empty clippings from bag using bothframe handle and bag handle.

NOTE: Do not drag the bag when empty-ing; it will cause unnecessary wear.

• Fill fuel tank to bottom of tank filler neck.Do not overfill. Use fresh, clean, regularunleaded gasoline with a minimum of87 octane. Do not mix oil with gasoline.Purchase fuel in quantities that can beused within 30 days to assure fuel fresh-ness.CAUTION: Wipe off any spilled oil or

fuel. Do not store, spill or use gasoline_ar an open flame.

CAUTION: Alcohol blended fuels(called gasohol or using ethanol or metha-nol) can attract moisture which leads toseparation and formation of acids duringstorage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage. Toavoid engine problems, the fuel systemshould be emptied before storage of 30days or longer. Empty the gas tank,' startthe engine and let it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuelnext season. See Storage Instructions foradditional information. Never use engineor carburetor cleaner products in the fueltank or permanent damage may occur.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINEADD OIL

Your lawnmower is shipped without oil inthe engine. For type and grade of oil touse, see UENGINE" in the Maintenancesection of this manual.A CAUTION: DO NOT overfill engine withoil, or it will smoke heavily from the muffleron startup.1. Be sure lawnmower is level.2. Remove oil dipstick from oil fill spout.3. You receive a container of oil with the

unit. Slowly pour the entire containerdown the oil fill spout into the engine.

4. Insert and tighten dipstick.IMPORTANT:• Check oil level before each use. Add oil

if needed. Fill to full line on dipstick.• Change the oil after every 25 hours of

operation or each season. You mayneed to change the oil more oftenunder dusty, dirty conditions. See "TOCHANGE ENGINE OIL" in the Mainte-nance section of this manual.

TO STOP ENGINE• To stop engine, release operator pres-

TO START ENGINE

NOTE: Due to protective coatings on theengine, a small amount of smoke may bepresent during the initial use of the prod-uct and should be considered normal.1. To start a cold engine, push primer

three (3) times before trying to start.Use a firm push. This step is notusually necessary when starting anengine which has already run for a fewminutes.

2. Hold operator presence control bardown to the handle and pull starterhandle quickly. Do not allow starter

9 rope to snap back.

NOTE: In cooler weather it may be neces-saryto repeat priming steps. In warmerweather over priming may cause floodingand engine will not start. If you do floodengine,wait a few minutes beforeattempt-ing to start and do not repeat primingsteps.

MOWING TIPS

• Under certain conditions, such as verytall grass, it may be necessary to raisethe height of cut to reduce pushingeffort and to keep from overloading theengine and leaving clumps of grass clip-pings. It may also be necessary to re-duce ground speed and/or run the lawnmower over the area a second time.

• For extremely heavy cutting, reduce thewidth of cut by overlapping previouslycut path and mow slowly.

• For better grass bagging and most cut-ting conditions, the engine speed shouldbe set in the FAST position.

• When using a rear discharge lawnmower in moist, heavy grass, clumpsof cut grass may not enter the grasscatcher. Reduce ground speed (pushingspeed) and/or run the lawn mower overthe area a second time.

• If a trail of clippings is left on the rightside of a rear discharge mower, mow ina clockwise direction with a small over-lap to collect the clippings on the nextpass.

• Pores in cloth grass catchers can be-come filled with dirt and dust with useand catchers will collect less grass. Toprevent this, regularly hose catcher offwith water and let dry before using.

• Keep top of engine around starter clearand clean of grass clippings and chaff.This will help engine air flow and extendengine life.

MULCHING MOWING TIPSIMPORTANT: For best performance,keep mower housing free of built-upgrass and trash. See =CLEANING" in theMaintenance section of this manual.

• The special mulching blade will recutthe grass clippings many times andreduce them in size so that as they fallonto the lawn they will disperse intothe grass and not be noticed. Also, themulched grass will biodegrade quicklyto provide nutrients for the lawn. Alwaysmulch with your highest engine (blade)speed as this will provide the best recut-ting action of the blades.

• Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet.Wet grass tends to form clumps andinterferes with the mulching action. Thebest time to mow your lawn is the earlyafternoon. At this time the grass hasdried, yet the newly cut area will not beexposed to direct sunlight.

• For best results, adjust the lawn mowercutting height so that the lawn mowercuts off only the top one-third of thegrass blades. If the lawn is overgrown itwill be necessary to raise the height ofcut to reduce pushing effort and to keepfrom overloading the engine and leavingclumps of mulched grass. For extremelyheavy grass, reduce your width of cutby overlapping previously cut path andmow slowly.

• Certain types of grass and grassconditions may require that an area bemulched a second time to completelyhide the clippings. When doing a sec-ond cut, mow across (perpendicular) tothe first cut path.

• Change your cutting pattern from weekto week. Mow north to south one weekthen change to east to west the nextweek. This will help prevent matting andgraining of the lawn.

The warranty on this lawn mower does notcover items that have been subjected tooperator abuse or negligence. To receivefull value from the warranty, operator mustmaintain unit as instructed in this manual.

Some adjustments will need to be madeperiodically to properly maintain your unit.

At least once a season, check to see ifyou should make any of the adjustmentsdescribed in the Service and Adjustmentssection of this manual.• At least once a year, replace the spark

plug, clean or replace air filter elementand check blade for wear. A new sparkplug and clean/new air filter elementassure proper air-fuel mixture and helpyour engine run better and last longer.

• Follow the maintenance schedule in thismanual.

IMPORTANT: Do not oil or grease plasticwheel bearings. Viscous lubricants willattract dust and dirt that will shorten the life ofthe self-lubricating bearings. If you feel theymust be lubricated, use only a dry, powdered

1 1graphite type lubricant sparingly.

LAWN MOWERAlwaysobserve safety rules when per-forming any maintenance.TIRES• Keep tires free of gasoline, oil, or insect

control chemicals which can harm rubber.• Avoid stumps, stones, deep ruts, sharp

objects and other hazards that maycause tire damage.

DRIVE WHEELSCheck front drive wheels each time beforeyou mow to be sure they move freely.The wheels not turning freely means trash,grass cuttings, etc. are inthe drive wheel areaand must be cleaned to free drive wheels.If necessary to clean the drive wheels, besure to clean both front wheels.1. Remove hubcaps, Iocknuts & washers.2. Remove wheels from wheel adjusters.3. Remove any trash or grass cuttings

from inside the dust cover, pinion and/or drive wheel gear teeth.

4. Put wheels back in place.NOTE: If after cleaning, the drive wheelsdo not turn freely, contact a Sears or otherqualified service center.

BLADE CARE

For best results, blade must be kept sharp.Replace bent or damaged blades.

TO REMOVE BLADE

1. Disconnect spark plug wire from sparkplug and place wire where it cannotcome in contact with plug.

2. Turn lawn mower on its side. Makesure air filter and carburetor are up.

3. Use a wood block between blade andmower housing to prevent blade fromturning when removing blade bolt.

NOTE: Protect your hands with glovesand/or, wrap blade with heavy cloth.4. Remove blade bolt by turning counter-

clockwise.

5. Remove blade & attaching hardware(bolt, lock washer & hardened washer).

TO REPLACE BLADE

1. Position blade on the blade adapteraligning the two (2) holes in the bladewith the raised lugs on the adapter.

2. Be sure the trailing edge of blade (oppo-site sharp edge) is up toward the engine.

3. Install the blade bolt with the lockwasher and hardened washer intoblade adapter and crankshaft.

4. Use block of wood between blade andlawn mower housing and tighten theblade bolt, turning clockwise.

• The recommended tightening torque is35-40 ft. Ibs.

TO SHARPEN BLADE

NOTE: We do not recommend sharpeningthe blade - but if you do, be sure the bladeis balanced.

Care should be taken to keep the blade bal-anced. An unbalanced blade will cause even-tual damage to lawn mower or engine.• The blade can be sharpened with a file

or on a grinding wheel. Do not attemptto sharpen while on the mower.

• To check blade balance, drive a nail intoa beam or wall. Leave about one inch ofthe straight nail exposed. Place centerhole of blade over the head of the nail.If blade is balanced, it should remain ina horizontal position. If either end of theblade moves downward, sharpen theheavy end until the blade is balanced.

GRASS CATCHER

• The grass catcher may be hosed withwater, but must be dry when used.

• Check your grass catcher often for dam-age or deterioration. Through normaluse it will wear. If catcher needs replac-ing, replace only with approved replace-ment catcher shown in the Repair Partssection of this manual. Give the lawnmower model number when ordering.

GEAR CASE

• To keep your drive system workingproperly, the gear case and area aroundthe drive should be kept clean and freeof trash build-up. Clean under the drivecover twice a season.

• The gear case is filled with lubricant tothe proper level at the factory. The onlytime the lubricant needs attention is ifservice has been performed on the gearcase.

If lubricant is required, use only ELFMultis EP00. Do not substitute.

ENGINELUBRICATION

Use only high quality detergent oil rated withAPI service classification SF-SJ. Select theoil's SAE viscosity grade according to yourexpected operating temperature.

NOTE: Although multi-viscosity oils(5W30, 10W30 etc.) improve starting incold weather, these multi-viscosity oils willresult in increased oil consumption whenused above 32°E Check your engine oillevel more frequently to avoid possibleengine damage from running low on oil.Change the oil after every 25 hours of op-eration orat least once a year if the moweris not used for 25 hours in one year.Check the crankcase oil level beforestarting the engine and after each five (5)hours of continuous use. Tighten oil plugsecurely each time you check the oil level.

TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL

NOTE: Before tipping lawn mower to drainoil, empty fuel tank by running engine untilfuel tank is empty.1. Disconnect spark plug wire from spark

plug and place wire where it cannotcome in contact with plug.

2. Remove engine oil cap; lay aside on aclean surface.

3. Tip lawn mower on its side as shownand drain oil into a suitable container.Rock lawn mower back and forth to re-move any oil trapped inside of engine.

6. Stop adding oil when you roach theFULL mark on the dipstick. Wait aminute to allow oil to settle.

IMPORTANT: It is important to preventgum deposits from forming in essentialfuel system parts such as carburetor, fuelfilter, fuel hose, or tank during storage.Also, alcohol blended fuels (called gasoholor using ethanol or methanol) can attractmoisture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage. Acidicgas can damage the fuel system of anengine while in storage.• Empty the fuel tank by starting the en-

gine and letting it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty.

• Never use engine or carburetor cleanerproducts in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

• Use fresh fuel next season.NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptablealternative in minimizing the formation offuel gum deposits during storage. Addstabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or stor-age container. Always follow the mix ratiofound on stabilizer container. Run engineat least 10 minutes after adding stabilizerto allow the stabilizer to reach the car-buretor. Do not empty the gas tank andcarburetor if using fuel stabilizer.

Lea estas Jnstrucclones y este manual comple-tamente antes de tratar de montar u operar susegadora nueva.IMPORTANTE: Este cortac6sped viene SINACEITE O GASOLINA en el motor.

Su segadora nueva ha sido montada en lafdbdca con la excepci6n de aquellas partes quese dejaron sin montar por razones de envfo.Todas las partes como las tuercas, las arande-las, los pernos, etc., que son necesadas paracompletar el montaje han sido colocadas an labolsa de partes. Pars asegurarse que su sega-dora funclone en forms segura y adecuada,todas las partes y los artfculos de ferreterfa quese monten Uenen que ser apretados segura-mente. Use las herramientas correctas, comosea necesado, para asegurar que se aprietenadecuadamente.

PARA REMOVER LA SEGADORA DELA CAJA DE CART(_N

1. Remueva las partes sueltas que se incluyancon la ssgadora.

2. Corte las dos esquinas de los extremosde la caja de cart6n y tienda el panel delsxtremo piano.

3. Rsmueva todo el matedal de empaqus, ex-cepto la cuSa entre el mango superior y dlinferior, y la curia que sujeta la barra de loscontrol que exige la presencia del operadorjunto con el mango superior.

4. Haga rodar la segadora hacia afuera de lacaja de cartbn y revfsela cuidadosamantepara veriflcar si todavfa quedan partessueltas adicionales.

COMO PREPARAR SU SEGADORA

PARA DESDOBLAR EL MANGOIMPORTANTE: Despliegue el mango conmucho cuidado pars no psllizcar o da_ar loscables de control.1. Levante los mangos hasta que la secci6n

del mango inferior se asegurs en su lugar,en la posicibn para segar.

2. Remueva la cu_a protsctora, levante la sec-ci6n del mango superior basts su lugar enel mango inferior, y apriete ambas manillasdsl mango.

3. Remueva la cuba del mango que sujeta labarra de los control que exigs la presenciadel operador junto con el mango superior.

El mango de la segadora puede ajustarsesegt3n le acomode para segar. Refi6rase a"AJUSTE DEL MANGO" en la Secci6n de Ser-vicio y Ajustes de este manual.

PARA MONTAR EL RECOGEDOR DE ClaSPED

1. Ponga el bastidor del recogedor de c6speden la bolsa del c6sped con la parte rfgidade la bolsa en la parts inferior. Asegt_resequs el mango del basUdor est6 an el exte-rior de la parte superior de la bolsa.

2. Deslics los sujetadores de vinilo sobre elbastidor.

AVISO: Si los sujetadores de vinilo est_n muyduros, m6talos an agua calients por algunosminutos. Si se moja la bolsa, d6jela que seseque antes de usarla.

CONTROL DE LA IMPULSION• La autopropulsi6n se controla manteniendo

la palanca de mando operador presenteabajo hacia el mango y tirando la barra deeccionamianto hasta la mango. Cuanto mdacercano se tira la barra hacia el mango, mdsrdpida ird la unidad.

• El movimiento hacia adelante se detienecuando sea la palanca de mando operadorpresente o la barra de ecclonamlento sesueltan. Para detener el movimiento hacia

• adelante sin apagar el motor, soltar s61o labarra de accionamiento. Mantener la palancade mando operador prasente abajo contra elmengo para continuar a cortar sin autopro-pulsi6n.

AVISO: Si despu_s haber desenganchadode la palanca de control, la segadora no rodahacia atrds, empuje la segadora un poco haciaadelante para desenganchar las ruedas de laimpulsibn.• Para mantener el mando conectado cuando

se da la vuelta a una esquina, empujar elmango para levantar las ruedas delanterasdel terreno mientras se gira la cortadora.

AJUSTE DEL MANDOOcasionalmente, el sistema de mando puede"aflojarse", provocando una disminuci6n de lavelocidad. Hay un tornillo de apriete manualen la parte trasera de la sede dal mando paraapretar la tensi6n del cable. Proceder de lasiguiente manera:1. Apagar la unidad y desconectar el cable de

bujfa de la bujfa.2. Rote tornillo de apriete manual a la izqui-

erda para tensar el cable impulsor.3. Opere la segadora para probar la velocidad

PARA AJUSTAR LA ALTURA DE CORTELevante las ruedas para el corte bajo y baje lasruedas para el corte alto., ajusta la altura decorte para que se acomode a sus requisitos. Laposici6n del medio es la major para la mayorfade los cdspedes.• Para cambiar la altura de corte, empuje la

palanca dal ajustador hacia la rueda. Muevala rueda hacia arriba o hacia abajo de modoque se acomode a sus requisitos. Asegdrasequa todas las ruedas queden Igualmenteajustadas.

AVlSO: El ajustador esta corractamentecolocado cuando les orejas de la pleca estdninsertadas en el agujero det mango. Tambidn,los ajustes de 9 posiciones (si equipado) per-mitan que el mango pueda ser movido entre lasorajas de la placa.

1. Aseg0rese qua la segadora est6 nivelada.2. Remueva la varila medidora de aceite del tubo

de desarga de acelte.3. Usted recibe un envase de acelte con la

unidad. Vierta lentamente el envase enterode aceite en el tubo de relleno del motor.

4. Inserte y apriete la varilla medidora de aceite.IMPORTANTE:• Revise el nivel del aceite antes de cada uso.

Agregue aceite si es necesarlo. Liana hasta laIfnea de llano en la varilla medidora de nivel.

• Cambie el acelte despu_s de 25 horas deoperaci6n o una vez por temporada. Puedenecesitar cambiar el aceite mds a menudo

cuando las condiciones con polvorosas o su-clas. Vea "PARA CAMBIAR EL ACEITE DELMOTOR" en la seccion de Mantenimiento deeste manual.

la parte inferior del cuello de relleno delestanque de gasollna. No Io llene demaslado.Use gasollna regular, sin plomo, nueva y llm-pia con el mfnimo de 87 octanos. No mezcleel aceite con la gasolina. Para asegurarque la gasolina utillzada sea fresca compreestanques los cuales puedan ser utilizados

combustible derramado. No almacene, derrameo use gasolina cerca de una llama expuesta._=PRECAUCI6N: Los combustibles

mezclados con alcohol (conocidos comogasohol, o el uso de etanol o metanol) puedenatraer la humedad, la que conduce a laseparaci6n y formaci6n de dcidos durante elalmacenamiento. La gasolina ac|dlca puededafiar el sistema del combustible de un motordurante el alrnacenamiento. Para evitar losproblemas con el motor, se debe vaciar elsistema del combustible antes de guardarlopor un perfodo de 30 dfas o mds. Vacfe elestanque del combustible, haga arrancar elmotor y hdgelo funcionar hasta que las Ii'neasdel combustible y el carburador queden vacfos.La pr6xima temporada use combustible nuevo.Vea las Instrucciones Para El Almacenamientopara mds informacibn. Nunca use productos delimpieza para el motor o para el carburador enel estanque del combustible pues se puedenproducir dafios permanentes.

PARA PARAR EL MOTOR• Para parar el motor, suelte la barra de con-

troles que exigen la presencia del operador.PARA HACER ARRANCAR EL MOTORAVISO: Debido a las capas protectoras del mo-tor, una cantidad peque_a de humo puede es-tar presente durante el uso inicial del productoy se debe considerar normal.f. Para hacer arrancar un motor frlo, empuje

el cebador tres (3) veces antes de tratarlo.Empuje firmemente. Este paso normal-mente no es necesario cuando se hacearrancar un motor qua ya ha estado funcio-nando por unos cuantos minutos.

2. Sujetelabarradecontrolesqueexlgenlapresencladeloperadorabajoen el mango.y tire el mango del arrancador rdpldamante.No permlta que el cord6n arrancedor sedevuelva abruptamente.

AVISO: En cltmae mds frfos puede que seanecesarlo repetlr los pasos del cebado. En cli-mas m_s calurosos el cebar demaslado puedeproduclr el ahogo y el motor no va a arrancar.Si se ahoga el motor espere unos cuantosminutos antes de tratar de hacedo arrancar yno repita los pasos del cebado.

CONSEJOS PARA SEGAR• Bajo ciertas condiclones, tal como c6sped

muy alto, puede ser necesado el elevar laaltura dal corte para reducir el esfuerzonecesado para empujar la segadora y paraevitar sobrecargar el motor, dejando mon-tones do recortes de c6sped. Puede qua seanecesado reducir la velocidad dal recorridoy/o haga funcionar la segadora sobre el dreapor segunda vaz.

• Para un corte muy pesado, reduzca el anchodel corte pasando parcialmente por encimadel lugar antedormente cortado y sieguelantamente.

• Para un major ensacado del c6sped y para lamayorfa de las condiciones de corte, la velo-cidad del motor debe ajustarse a la posici6nde RAPIDO.

• Cuando use una segadora con descargatrasera en c_sped hdmedo y pesado, losmontones del c6sped cortado puede que noentrenen el recogedor de c6sped. Reduzcala valocidad del recorddo (velocidad de em-puje) y/o haga funcionar la segadora sobre eldrea por segunda vaz.

• Si queda una hueUa de cortes an el ladoderecho de una segadora con descargatrasera, siegue en la direcci6n en qua giranlas manillas del reloj, solapando un pocopara recaudar los recortes an la pr6ximapasada.

• Los poros en los recogedores de c6sped detela pueden Ilenarse con mugre y polvo conel uso y los recogedores recaudardn menosc6sped. Para evitar 6ste, rocie el recogedorcon la manguera de agua regularmante yddjelo secarse antes de usarlo.

• Mantenga la parte superior del motor, alred-edor del arrancador, despejada y sin recortesde cdsped y paja. Esto ayudard el flujo delaire del motor y extanderd su duraci6n.

CONSEJOS PARA SEGAR Y ACOL-CHARIMPORTANTE: Para obtaner el majorrendlrnlento mantanga la caja de la segadorasin acumulaclon de cesped y basum, Vea"LIMPIF_ZA" en la seccion de Mantanlmanto deeste manual.

• La cuchilla acolchadom especial va a volvara cortar los recortes de c6sped muchasveces, y los reduce en tamafio, de modo quesi se caan en el c6sped se van a dispesarentre 6ste y no se van a notar. Tarnbldn, elc6sped acolchado se va a deshacer rdpldam-ente entregando substanclas nub'itivas parael c6sped. Slempre acolche con la velocldaddel motor (cuchllla) mds alta, puos asf seobtandrd la major acci6n de recorte de lascuchillas.

• Evite cortar el cdsped cuando est6 moJado.El c6sped mojado tiende a formar montonese interfiere con la acci6n de acolchedo.La major hora para segar el cdsped estempmno en la tarde. A esa hora 6ste se hasecado y el drea reci6n cortada no quedardexpuesta al sol directo.

• Para obtener los mejores resultados, ajustela altura del corte de la segadora de modoque 6sta corte solarnente el tercio supedorde las hojas de c6sped. En el caso de que elc6sped haya crecido demasiado, puede sernecesado el elevar la altura del corte parareducir el esfuerzo necesario para empujar lasegadora y para evitar sobrecargar el motor,dejando montones de recortes de c6sped.Para un c6sped muy pesado, reduzca el an-cho del corte pasando por encima del lugaranteriormante cortado y siegue lantamante.

• Ciertos tipos de c6sped y sus condicionespuedan exigir qua un drea tenga que seracolchada por segunda vaz para escondercompletamente los recortes. Cuando se hagael segundo corte, siegue atravesado (anforma perpendicular) a la pasada del primercorte.

• Cambie su patr6n de corte de semana asemana. Siegue de norte a sur una semanay luego cambie de este a oeste la prbxlmasemana. Esto evitard qua el c6sped seenrede y cambie de direccibn.

SEGADORASlempre observe las reglas de seguddad cu-ando haga el mantonimlento.LLANTAS• Mantanga las Ilantas sin gasolina, aceite o

substanclas qufmlcas pare control de insec-tos que pueden darter la goma.

• Evite los tocones, las pledras, las grietas pro-fundas, los objetos afilados y otros peligrosque pueden dariar a lag Ilantas.

RUEDAS DE IMPULSIONRevise las ruedas de impuisi6n delanteres cadavez antes de segar, pare asegurarse de que semueven libremente. Si lag ruedas no giran li-bremente quiere decir que hay basura, recortesde c6sped, etc. en el drea de las ruedas deImpuisl6n y tienen que limpiarse para libemrlas.Es necesario limpiar las ruedas de impuisi6n;revise ambas ruedas delanteras.1. Remueva los tapacubos, las tuercas de

seguddad y las arandelas.2. Remueva las ruedas de los ajustadores de

las ruedas.3. Remueva la basura y los recortes de

c6sped de dentro de le cubierta contrael polvo, pifi6n y/o de los dientes de losengranajes de las ruedas de impulsi6n.

4. Ponga las ruedas de vuelta an su lugar.AVISO: Si despuds de limpiar las ruedas deimpulsibn no giran Libremante, p6ngase encontacto con su cantro de servicio Sears o conun otto centro de servicio cualificado.

CUIDADO DE LA CUCHILLAPare obtener los mejores resultados, la cuchillade la segadora tienen que mantenerse afilada.Cambie la cuchilla doblada o da_ada.PARA REMOVER LA CUCHILLA

1. Desconecte si alambre de la bujia y p6ngsio endonde no pueda entrar en contacto con 6sta.

2. Haga descansar la segadora en su lado.Asegdrese que el filtro de aire y que elcarburador queden mirando hacia arriba.

3. Use un bloque de madera entre la cuchillay la caia de la segadora para evitar que lacuchilla gire cuando se le quite el perno.

AVISO: Proteja sus manos con guantes y/oenvuelva la cuchllla con una tela gruesa.4. Remueva el perno de la cuchilla gir&ndolo

en el sanUdo contrario en que giran lagmanillas del reloj.

5. Remueva la cuchilla y los artfculos de fer-reteria adjuntadores (el perno, la arandelade seguridad y la arandela endurecida).

AVISO: Remueva el adaptador de la cuchilla yrevise el cubo interior de la ranura del adaptadorde la cuchilla. La ranura tiene que estar en buenascondiciones para que funcione en forma adec-uada. Cambie el adaptador si estd dafiado.PARA CAMBIAR LA CUCHILLA

1. Ponga el adaptador de la cuchilla en elciguefial del motor. Asegdrese que la ranuradel adaptador y que el chavetero del cigue-_al est6n alineados.

2. Ponga la cuchilla en el adaptador de 6staallneando los dos (2) agujeros an la cuchillacon las salientes elevadas en el adaptador. 28

3. Aseg0rese de que el horde de sallda dela cuchilla (opuesto al borde afllado) est6hacia ardba haole el motor.

4. Instale el perno de la cuohllla con la aran-dala de seguddad y la arandala endurecidaen el adaptador de la cuchilla y el clguerlal.

5. Use un bloque de madera entre la cuchlllay la ca_a de la segadora y apdete el pemode la cuchllla girdndolo en el sentJdo an quegiran las manillas del reloj.

• La torsi6n pare apretar recomendada es de35 - 40 p_es Ilbras.

una rueda rectificadora. No trate de afilarlamientms se encuentra en la segadora.

• Para revisar el balance de la cuchilla, clave unctavo en una viga o en la pared. Deje sirededorde una pulgada de un clavo recto expuesto.Ponga el agujero central de la cuchilla sobre lacabeza del clavo. Si la cuchilla estd batanceadadebe permanecer en la posici6n horizontal. Sicualquiera de los extremos de la cuchilla semueve hacia abajo, afile el extremo pesadobasra que dsta quede balanceada.

RECOGEDOR DE C#SPED

• El recogedor de c6sped puede ser rociadocon el agua de la manguera pero tiane queestar seco cuando se vaya a usar.

• Revise su recogedor de c6sped a menudopara verificar si estd da_ado o detedorado.Se vaa desgastar con el uso normal. Si senecesita cambiar el recogedor, cdmbielosolamente pot uno que sea aprobado por elfabricante. D6 el nOmero del modelo de lasegadora cuando Io ordane.

CAJA DE ENGRANAJES• Para mantener el sistema de impulsi6n

funcionando en forma adecuada, la caja deengranajes y el drea alrededor de la impulsi6ntianen que mantanerse limpias y sin acumu-laci6n de basura. Umple debaJo de la cubiertade la impuisi6n dos veces pot temporada.

• La caja de engranajes se Ilena con lubdcantehasta el nlvel adecuado en la fdbdca. La0nlca vez que el lubdcante necesita atenci6nes cuando sale ha prestado servlclo a lacaja de engranajes.

• SI sa neceslta lubdcante, usa solarnente ELFMultls EP00. No use substitutos.

MOTORLUBRICACl6NUse solamente aceita de detergente de alta call-dad clasiflcado con la clasificack_n SF-SJ de sar-vicio API. Seleccione la calidad de viscosidad SAEsegfin su temperatura de operaci6n esperada.

CALIDADESDE VISCOSIDADDE SAE

AVISO: A pesar de que los aceites de multi-viscosidad (5W30, 10W30, etc.) rnejoran elarranque en clima fr{o, estos aceites de mul-tiviscosidad van ha aumentar el consumo deaceite cuando sa usan en temperaturas sobre32 ° F. AVISO: Antes de inclinar la segadora para dre-nar el aceite, drene el tanque de combustiblehaciendo correr el motor hasta que el tanqueest6 vacio.1. Desconecte el alambre de la buj{a y

p6ngalo de modo que no pueda entrar encontacto con 6sta.

2. Remueva la tapa del delx_sito del aceite;d6jela a un lado en una superficie limpia.

3. Incline la cortadora de c6sped por estecostado tal como se muestra y purgue elaceite en un recipiente id6neo. Mueva lasagadora de atrds para adelante para re-mover todo el aceite que sa haya quedadoatrapado dentro del motor.

4. Limple todo el acelte derramado en la saga-dora y an el lado del motor.

5. Echar aceite despaclo en el conducto delaceite, _ose a Intervalos regularas paracontrolar el nlvel del aceite con la varilla.

6. Parar de arladir aceite cuando sa alcanza laserial de llano (FULL) en la vadlla. Esperar unminuto para dejar que el aceite sa arregle.

7. Continde agregando cantidados pequeasde aceite y vualva a inspeccionar la varillamedidora settles dal nivel de acieta an Ileno(FULL). NO sobrallane el motor con aceite,o fumard pesa demante del silencladorcuando Io valla a arrancar.

8. Asagdresa de apretar la varilla medidoradel aceite antes de arrancar el motor.

9. Vuelva a conectar el alambre de la bujfa a 6sta.

RLTRO DE AIRESu motor puede sufrir averfas y funcionar demanera incorrecta con un filtro del aim sucio.Sustituir el papel del cartucho una vez al afioo tras 100 horas de funcionamiento, rr_s amanudo si se utiliza en condiciones de sucie-dad y polvo pa_cularas.PARA LIMPIAR EL FILTRO DE AIRE

I. Suelte el tornillo e incline la cubierta pararemoverlo.

2. Cuidadosamente, remueva el cartucho.3. Lfmpielo golpedndolo suavemante en una

superficie plana. Si estd muy sucio cambieel cartucho.

_DRECAUCI(_N: Los solventes de petr61eo,tales como el keroseno, no se deben usar paralimpiar el cartucho. Pueden producir el deteriorode 6ste. No aceite el cartucho. No use aire apresi6n para limpiarlo o sacarlo.4. Instale el cartucho, luego vuelva a poner la

• Haga descansar la segadora en su lado.Asegdrese que el flltro de aire y que el carbu-rador queden mirando hacla ardbe. Limpie laparte inferior de su segedora raspdndola pararemover la acumulaci6n de c6sped y basum.

• Llmpfe el motor a menudo pare evitar quese acumule la basura. Un motor tapado fun-clona mds caliente y se acorta su duraci6n.

• Mantenga las superficies pulidas y las rue-des sin gasoline, aceite, etc.

• No recomendamos el uso de una manguerade jardfn pare Ilmpler le segadom a menosque el slstema el6ctdco, el sllenciador, elfiltro de aim y el carburador est_ tapadospara evitar que les entre el egua. El ague enel motor puede acortar la dumcl6n de 6ste.

UMPIE DEBAJO DE LA CUBIERTA DE LAIMPULSIONLlmple debajo de la cublerta de la impulsi(_npor Io menos dos veces cada tempomda.Raspe debajo de la cubierta con un cuchillopare masilla o con una hermmianta perecida,pare remover toda acumuleci6n de c6sped obasura en la parte infedor de la cubierta de laimpulsi6n.

PARA AJUSTAR LA ALTURA DE CORTEVea "PARA AJUSTAR LA ALTURA DE CORTE"en la secci6n de Operaci6n de este manual.DESVIADOR TRASEROSe proporciona un desviador trasem, adjuntoentre las ruedas traseras de su segadora, parareducir a un mfnimo la posibilidad que objetossean lanzados hacia afuera de la parte traserade la segadora, en la posici6n en donde seencuentra el operador. Si se dat_a el desviadordebe cambiarse.PARA REMOVER LA CORREA DE IMPULSl0N1. Remueva la cubierta de la impulsi(_n y

fijedor de la correa.2. Remueva la correa empujando hacia abajo

an la polea de la caja de engranajes.3. Haga descansar la segadora an su lado

con el filtro de aire y el carburador mirandohacia arriba.

4. Remueva la cuchilla y la defense en contradal desperdicio.

5. Remueva la correa de la polea del motor enel ciguehal.

PARA CAMBIAR LA CORREA DE IMPULSION1. Instale la correa nueva en la polea del motor.2. Reinstale la defensa en contra del desperdi-

cio y la cuchilla.3. Vuelva el cortac6spedes a la posici6n vertical.4. Instale la correa nueva an la polea de la

caja de engranajes.5. Reinstale la fijador de la correa y cubierta

de la impulsi6n.

NOTA: Siempre use la correa aprobada pot lafdbrlca para asegurarse que calce y dure.

5. Vuelva a montar las clavijas de horquilla potencima de las clavijas de montaje.

6. Vuelva a montar el mango superior y todaslas partes removidas del mango inferior.

MOTORVELOCIDAD DEL MOTOR

La velocidad del motor ha sido ajustada enla fdbdca. No trate de aumantar la velocidaddel motor pues se pueden producir lesionespersonales. Si cree qua el motor estd funcio-

nando demasJado rdpido o demasiad0 lentO,Ileve su segadora e mas con _ centro deservlclo Sears o con un otro centro de serviclocualificado.

CARBURADOR

Su carburador tiene un chorro principal fljono ajustable pare controlar la mezcla. SI sumotor no estd funcionando en forma adecuadadebldo a probfemas qua se sospecha vlanendel carburador, Ileve su segadora a contactocon su centre de servicio Sears o con un otrocentro de servicio cualificado pare reparada y/oajustarla.IMPORTANTE: Nunca manipufe el reguladordel motor, el que ha sido ajustado en la fdbdcapara la velocidad del motor adecuada. Puedeser peUgroso hacer funcionar el motor a unavelocidad per sobrs el ajuste de alta velocidadde la fdbdca. Si cree que la velocidad altaregulada del motor necesita ajuste,contacto consu centro de servicio Sears o con un otro centrode servicio cualificado, el que cuenta con elequipo adecuado y la expedancla pars hacerlos ajustes necesarios.

Inmediatamente prepare su segadora para elalmacenamiento al final de cada temporada o sila unidad no se va a user por 30 dfes o mds.SEGADORACuando so va a guarder la segadora por ciertoperfodo de tiempo, Ifmpiela cuidadosamente,remueva toda la mugrs, la grasa, las hojas, etc.Gudrdela en un drea limpia y seca.1. Limpie toda la segadora (Vea "LIMPIEZA"

en la secci6n de Mantenimento de estemanual).

2. Lubdquela segdn se muestra en la secci6nde Mantenimento de este manual.

3. AsegL_resede que todas las tuercas yclavijas y todos los pernos y tornillos est_naprstados en foma segura. Inspeccionelas partes que se mueven pare verificar siestdn dahadas, quebradas o desgastadas.Cdmbielas si es necesario.

4. Retoque todas las superficies qua est6noxidadas o con la pintura picada; use unalija antes de pintar.

MANGOPuede doblar el mango de su segadora para elalmacenamiento.NOTA: El mango superior tiene un soporte"contra-dobla" situado en el lado derechodel mango. Este soporte evita qua el mangosuperior doble hacia adelante, Io cual ayudaa proteger 61(los) cable(s) de control contrscualquier daSo.1. Apriete los extrsmos inferiores del mango

inferior entre sf hasta qua el mango inferiorquede separado dal puntal del mango,luego mudvalo hacia adelante.

2. Suelte los pernos de montaje del mangosuperior Io suficiente como pare permitirqua el mango superior se pueda doblarhacia atrds.

IMPORTANTE: Cuando doble el mango para elalmacenamiento o el transporte, asegdrese quaIo doble segdn se muestra o purde daf_ar loscables de control.• Cuando prepare sus mangos a partir de

MOTORSISTEMA DE COMBUSTIBLEIMPORTANTE: Es Importante evRar quese formen deposltos de coma en partesfundamentalas del slstemade combustible talescomo el carburador, el filtro del combustible,la mangura del combustible o en el estanquedurante el almacenamlento. Los combusUblesmezclados con alcohol (conocido comegasohol o que tienen etanol o metanol)Pueden atraer humedad, Io que conduce a laseparacion y a la formaci6n de acidos duranteel almacenamiento. La gasolina acida puededanar el sistema de combustible de un motordurante el perido de almacenamiento.• Vaciar el dep6sito del carburante poniendo

en marcha el motor y dejdndolo funcionarhasta que el carburante termine y elcarburador est6 vacfo.

• Nunca use los productos para limpieza delcarburador odel motor en el estanque decombustible pues se pueden producir daSospermanentes.

• Use combustible nuevo la pr6xima temporeda.AVISO: El astabilizador de combustible as unaaltemativa aceptable para reducir a un minimola formaci6n de dep6sitos de goma en el com-bustible durante el pedodo de almacenamiento.Agregue estabilizador a la gasolina en el es-tanque de combustible o en el envase para elalmacenamiento. Siempre siga la proporci6n demezcla que se encuentra en el envase del establ-lizador. Haga funcionar el motor pot Io menos 10minutos despu6s de agregar el estabilizador, parapermitir que este Ilegue al carburador. No drene lagasolina del estanque de gasolina y el carburadorsi se estd usando establlizador de combustible.

ACEITE DEL MOTOR

Drene el scelte (con el motor calJente) y cdmblelocon acelte de motor Ilmplo. (Vea =MOTOR" en laseccl6n de Mantenlmento de este manual.)

ClLINDRO1. Remueva la bujfa.2. Vacfe una onza (29 ml) de acelte a trav6s

del agujero de la bujfa en el clllndro.3. Tire la manilla de arranque lentamente unas

cuantas vasas para dlstribulr el eceite.4. Vuelva a montar la nueva bujfa.

OTROS

• No guarde la gasolina de una temporada a laotra.

• Carnbie el envase de la gasolina si se emp-ieza a oxldar. La oxidaci6n y/o la mugre ensu gasolina producirdn problemas.

• Si es postble, guarde su unidad en un recintocerrado y cObrala para protegerla contra elpolvo y la mugre.

• Cubra su unldad con un form protectoradecuado que no retenga la humedad. Nouse pldstico. El pldstico no puede raspirar, Ioque permite la formaci6n de condensact6n,Io que producird la oxidaci6n de su unidad.

IMPORTANTE: Nunca cubre la segadoramientras el motor y las areas de escape todavlaestan calientes._bPRECAUCI(_N: Nunca almacene la

segadora con gasolina en el estanque dentrode un edificio en donde los gases puedenalcanzar una llama expuesta o una chispa.Permita que se enfrfe el motor antes dealmacenada en algdn recinto cerrado.
