towards a benchmark event in Latin AmericaMusic video as a format not only combines the energy of music and the magic of filmmaking, but it is now is an expanding and accesible tool for artistic expression. With the 1st Buenos Aires Music Video Festival (BAMV Fest) we seek to recognize this creative work and offer a window of visibility.

This year we received over 500 music videos, from over 30 countries, submitted through our official platforms. With these remarkable results, we confirm our goal to promote filmmaking and share outstanding music videos that contribute to our pop culture. There aren’t many music video festivals abroad. And with the BAMV Fest’s success, we aim to establish ourselves as a benchmark event in Latin America. It is important to offer an ideal space for creative exchange and it’s the best moment to unite our community of music video makers in Argentina.

We look forward to the second edition of the Buenos Aires Music Video Festival in 2020, not before organizing more activities throughout the year.

⟶ Nearly 200 people attended the event which had live performances by Victoria Real, Biografía Mutante and nominated artists LIMON and Fausto Lozano. The latter premiered his new single “El Coso Grande”. Several personalities from the music video and audiovisual world — such as the Dawidson Brothers, Martin Deus, Belen Asad, and Nicolás Gil Lavedra — presented the main categories of the night.

The most awarded music videos were the Argentinean productions “Burn October” (Video of the Year, Cinematography), “Al Revés” (Best Video - Argentina, Best Choreography) and “A Punta de Espada” (Best Director, Art Direction). Other films such as Sebastian Yatra’s “Cristina” and John Vermont’s “Wondering” won Best Video LATAM and Best International Video, respectively.

This year’s winner earned a certificate signed by the 2019 Jury Committee while the main categories got an award called “the cassette” in honor of the pre-YouTube era music videos fans that recorded MTV videos on VHS tapes.

The festival’s director, Juan Montes, gave a message to the audience before closing the night asking for greater participation of female directors and others belonging to less favored groups such as the LGBTIQ+ community in upcoming editions of the Festival.

We expect that throughout 2020, the BAMV FEST will continue its activities with music video screenings, workshops, and seminars with special guests.

latin wdmv:community of music video directors

The Dawidson Brothers and Juan Montes, director

of BAMV FEST, hosted the 3rd Latin WDMV meeting

of the year as part of the activities of the Buenos Aires

Music Video Festival. They base this talk on the model

of the American organization “We Direct Music Videos”,

which seeks to offer a more transparent industry based

on respect for filmmakers and reducing free work, thus

building a community of music video directors in the

country.

After reviewing the origins of this movement in North

America, the moderators echoed the Argentine context

and talked about the current problems of copyright in the

music video industry. ■

Eric Dawidson explained how to register music videos on the DAC system in Argentina to obtain royalties for copyrights

through music video broadcast on television.

Juan Montes detailed the origins of the organization “We Direct Music Videos” in North America.
