Cycling to Clayton Why not cycle to Monash University’s Clayton campus? You can stay fit and healthy, and it can be quicker than other transport options. Cycling routes are marked on this TravelSmart map or visit Bicycle Victoria at www.bv.com.au or VicRoads at www.vicroads.vic.gov.au. Lockers and showers are available in the James Gormley Bike Arrival Station. Monash University’s Clayton campus has great sustainable transport options, particularly public transport. Research shows that those who adopt healthy and sustainable travel habits at university are more likely to travel sustainably after university too. Monash has good reason to care about your travel choices! With limited space available at Clayton campus, every new car park Monash has to provide costs $14,000 and takes up room that could be used for a new laboratory or lecture hall – our core business. This map shows you how to travel smart at Monash. TravelSmart Bike parking at train stations Bike shops Melbourne’s public transport network can help you explore every corner of this vibrant city. Trains, trams and buses offer comprehensive public transport services extending from the central business district to the suburbs in all directions. Train and tram services operate between 5am and midnight, Mon–Thu, with extended hours to around 1am on Fri and Sat nights. On Sunday, trains and trams operate from 7am to 11pm. Many of Melbourne’s bus routes run 6am–9pm Mon to Fri, 8am–9pm on Sat and 9am–9pm on Sun. Public Transport Victoria Public Transport Victoria (PTV) is your central stop for information on public transport services, fares, tickets and initiatives. For public transport information in Victoria visit ptv.vic.gov.au or call 1800 800 007 6am to midnight (all night Friday and Saturday). Journey planner Enter your origin and destination into PTV’s online journey planner for travel anywhere in Victoria and you’ll be provided with a tailored travel plan including maps, connections and estimated travel times. PTV Hubs For face-to-face customer information visit a PTV Hub at Southern Cross Station or 750 Collins Street for all your public transport travel needs. myki myki is your ticket to travel on Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses. The reusable smart card is easy to use. Simply top up before your journey and then touch on and touch off at a myki reader as you travel. Once you have a myki, you can travel as many times as you want in your chosen zone/s for the duration of your pass. You can buy and top up your myki at over 800 retailers including all 7-Eleven stores, the ticket office window at Premium Stations, from a myki machine (full fare myki cards only) located at all train stations and major tram and bus interchanges. You can also buy or top up your myki online at ptv.vic.gov. au or by calling 1800 800 007 (6am to midnight daily, allowing 24 hours to process top up). There are two options for using myki – myki money and myki pass. myki money With myki money you pay as you go. Once topped up, your myki will automatically calculate the lowest fare possible according to the zones you travel in as you touch on and off. You can also set up a nominated credit card or bank account to automatically top up your credit whenever your myki money balance falls below a nominated amount. myki pass myki pass is a great option if you’re planning on travelling regularly. Simply choose the zone/s you wish to travel in and the number of consecutive days of travel you need. You can buy a 7-day myki pass, or anywhere between 28 and 365 consecutive days of travel (also see Monash Commuter Club). Travelling on public transport Like us on facebook.com/monashgreen Bike lockers Bike lockers are available at selected Metro and V/Line train stations across Victoria, and can be used for free after paying a refundable bond ($100 for a locker with a built in lock or $50 for a locker that requires you to supply a lock). At Premium Stations, lockers can be hired for up to three months at a time and renewed without paying any additional bond, provided the locker is kept in good condition. Lockers can be used for storing your bike, helmet, clothes and shoes. Items stored in lockers remain your responsibility. For more information visit metrotrains.com.au or call 1800 800 007. Bike lockers are located at the following stations on this map: Bike lockers Ashburton Hughesdale Sandown Clayton Huntingdale Springvale Glen Waverley Mt Waverley Westall Holmesglen Parkiteer bike cages There are 78 Parkiteer bike cages at train stations across Melbourne and key regional centres. Each bike cage provides undercover, free, secure parking for around 25 bikes. To access your nearest Parkiteer cage you need to register for an access card. Cards are available through Parkiteer for a refundable $50 deposit. Parkiteer cages are available for use at Oakleigh, Huntingdale, Westall, Springvale, Glen Waverley, Holmesglen and East Malvern Stations. To locate other Parkiteer bike cages visit parkiteer.com.au. If you live... You should consider: 0–5 km from Clayton 5–10 km from Clayton 10–20 km from Clayton 20–30 km from Clayton >30 km from Clayton Bikeshare All students and staff have access to a new fleet of share bikes on Clayton campus. The bikes can be booked online and are available for use by anybody at a low cost, with a wide range of memberships available to suit your needs (eg, pay-as- you-go, semi-annual, or annual). You can ride the bikes in and around campus and lock up at any designated hub at the end of your ride. For more information and to register, visit the Bikeshare website at monashbikeshare.com. Why buy a car when you can share one? Car share gives you 24/7 access to clean, new cars whenever you need them. There’s no registration, petrol, insurance or maintenance to pay – just a simple sign up process and fee, based on your use. Join one of Melbourne’s car share programs to receive an access card or key, then book a car online. Sharing a car isn’t just good for the environment – if you drive less than 15,000 km a year, it will save you money as well. Car sharing bays are available on both Clayton and Caulfield campuses. By joining, not only are you doing your bit for the environment, but you can also: • get a 10% discount on your 365-day myki pass • avoid fare increases and the need to top up your myki for 12 months. To register or get more information, visit http://www.intranet. monash/bpd/services/ transport-and-parking/ commuter-club If you travel most days in the week you could save money by purchasing a ‘myki pass’ instead of using myki money (see above for information on the Monash Commuter Club). Two-hour fares touched on at or after 6pm are valid all evening (until 3am). The time you spend on public transport can be used to ‘catch up’ on things. You can work or catch up on emails on your phone. Or you can relax by reading, meditating or playing games on your phone. So be sure to bring a device, a book, or some work along with you. Take the opportunity to stretch while you wait for your train, tram or bus. For more public transport tips, including a list of information sources visit www.ptua.org.au/tips. Public transport tips The James Gormley Bike Arrival Station on Clayton campus (see map right) features secure, weather protected bicycle parking spaces, showers and private change areas, lockers, a DIY bike repair bay, toilets, and a drinking fountain. The bike arrival station provides an outstanding ‘end of trip’ facility for students and staff and supports sustainable transport at Monash. To register to use the bike arrival station, visit monash.edu/bike-arrival Many Monash students are eligible for discounted public transport. The discounts available differ for domestic and international students. Typically, undergraduate students who enrol in full time study are eligible. To check your eligibility go to www.monash.edu/connect/ travel/travel-concessions. • Eligible domestic undergraduate students can order a transport concession form in the Web Enrolment System (WES) – go to the ‘Student Services’ section and click ‘Apply for transport concession’. • Eligible international undergraduate students can purchase an iUSEpass (www.iusepass.vic.gov. au) to receive 50% off the cost of an annual myki. Eligible students can order the discount code via WES – go to the ‘Student Services’ section and click ‘Apply for international travel discount’. • Part-time and postgraduate students (as well as staff) are typically ineligible for transport concessions. They may benefit from signing up to Monash Commuter Club in order to obtain 10% off an annual myki (see below). If you are unsure about your eligibility or have a question, contact Monash Connect. Monash Commuter Club The Bikery is a volunteer- run bike shop that sells parts, accessories, and refurbished bikes, performs small repairs, and gives general cycling advice. The Bikery is located at Monash Sport, 42 Scenic Boulevard, Clayton campus. Open during semester Mon–Fri 10am–4pm Ph: 9905 8017 E: [email protected] A list of bike shops across Melbourne can be found at www.bicyclenetwork. com.au/find/shop Access and mobility Trains All train stations, apart from Heyington Station, are wheelchair accessible. If you need help boarding a train, wait on the platform near the front of the train. The train driver will help you board and depart the train by producing a ramp. Premium Stations are staffed from the first to last train every day and have accessible facilities including toilets, public phones and parking. Trams There are more than 100 low-floor trams on Melbourne’s tram network, which offer allocated spaces for passengers using wheelchairs or mobilitiy aids. This area is inside the double door and marked with a wheelchair symbol. Some low-floor trams have buttons that alert the driver to activate a ‘bridging plate’ to bridge the gap between the tram and the platform, while other trams have a specially marked call button that overrides the automatic door closing mechanism to allow extra time to enter and exit the tram. Buses More than 80% of Melbourne’s bus services are wheelchair accessible, including SmartBus, SkyBus, and NightRider buses. At the stop, the bus driver places a ramp between the front door of the bus and the kerb of the road. For station and stop profiles visit ptv.vic.gov.au Taxis Wheelchair accessible taxis can be booked through Silver Top Taxis on 131008 or Yellow Cabs on 13CABS. Why not green up your act and carpool? Carpooling to Monash reduces traffic congestion and pollution by encouraging people to share rides. Registered users can be matched with other people in their area looking to travel to the same destination. Carpooling is a great way to help the environment and, if you share petrol costs, save money as well. As an added incentive, we’ll reward you with cheaper parking on campus. All you need to do is register and park in one of our allocated carpooling spaces. Carpooling spaces at Monash’s Clayton campus are located in the South East and North West corners of campus (see map). Spaces can fill fast, so it’s first come, first served. For more information or to register to search for and advertise rides go to www.monash. edu/people/transport- parking/carpooling There are a number of apps that provide personalised train, tram and bus information. PTV app (iOS and Android) The free PTV app has journey planner, service times, and real-time tram arrival information. The new Monash Transport Interchange will deliver a world-class sustainable public transport hub with improved integration of bus, cyclist and pedestrian services. As a critical public transport connection, it will support the University’s rapidly expanding role as a regional destination, and will provide enhanced sustainable and active transport options for staff, students and visitors. Given the interchange’s critical role as a regional transport hub and key access point for the Clayton campus, there will inevitably be some disruption to the campus community. We are committed to ensuring the interchange remains a passenger-friendly transport connection that gets you where you need to be. For updates on bus stop locations please see the following webpage for more details. http://www. monash.edu/about/our- locations/clayton-campus/ monash-transport- interchange Monash shuttle bus services run express in both directions from Clayton to Berwick, Clayton to Caulfield and Clayton to Peninsula campuses. All Shuttle bus services run from Monday to Friday during the academic year only. The Clayton to Caulfield service also operates on a modified timetable outside of the academic year. The shuttle bus services commence every year during O-Week in late February and finish at the completion of the exam period in late November. The shuttle bus services are free of charge to passengers with a valid Monash University student or staff card.

Cycling to ClaytonWhy not cycle to Monash University’s Clayton campus?

Bike parking at train stations Bike shops

Melbourne’s public transport network can help you explore every corner of this vibrant city.

Public Transport VictoriaPublic Transport Victoria (PTV) is your central stop for information on public transport services, fares, tickets and initiatives.

For public transport information in Victoria visit ptv.vic.gov.au or call 1800 800 007 6am to midnight (all night Friday and Saturday).

Journey plannerEnter your origin and destination into PTV’s online journey planner for travel anywhere in Victoria and you’ll be provided with a tailored travel plan including maps, connections and estimated travel times.

PTV HubsFor face-to-face customer information visit a PTV Hub at Southern Cross Station or 750 Collins Street for all your public transport travel needs.

mykimyki is your ticket to travel on Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses.

You can also buy or top up your myki online at ptv.vic.gov.au or by calling 1800 800 007 (6am to midnight daily, allowing 24 hours to process top up).

There are two options for using myki – myki money

and myki pass.myki moneyWith myki money you pay as you go. Once topped up, your myki will automatically calculate the lowest fare possible according to the zones you travel in as you touch on and off. You can also set up a nominated credit card or bank account to automatically top up your credit whenever your myki money balance falls below a nominated amount.

myki passmyki pass is a great option if you’re planning on travelling regularly. Simply choose the zone/s you wish to travel in and the number of consecutive days of travel you need. You can buy a 7-day myki pass, or anywhere between 28 and 365 consecutive days of travel (also see Monash Commuter Club).

Bike lockersBike lockers are available at selected Metro and V/Line train stations across Victoria, and can be used for free after paying a refundable bond ($100 for a locker with a built in lock or $50 for a locker that requires you to supply a lock).

Bikeshare

All students and staff have access to a new fleet of share bikes on Clayton campus.

The bikes can be booked online and are available for use by anybody at a low cost, with a wide range of memberships available to suit your needs (eg, pay-as-you-go, semi-annual, or annual).

Monash offers all staff and non-concession students the opportunity to participate in the Monash myki Commuter Club. By joining, not only are you doing your bit for the environment, but you can also:• get a 10% discount on

your 365-day myki pass

• avoid fare increases and the need to top up your myki for 12 months.

To register or get more information, visit http://www.intranet.monash/bpd/services/transport-and-parking/commuter-club

If you travel most days in the week you could save money by purchasing a ‘myki pass’ instead of using myki money (see above for information on the Monash Commuter Club).

Two-hour fares touched on at or after 6pm are valid all evening (until 3am).

The time you spend on public transport can be used to ‘catch up’ on things. You can work or

catch up on emails on your phone. Or you can relax by reading, meditating or playing games on your phone. So be sure to bring a device, a book, or some work along with you.

Take the opportunity to stretch while you wait for your train, tram or bus.

The James Gormley Bike Arrival Station on Clayton campus (see map right) features secure, weather protected bicycle parking spaces, showers and private change areas, lockers, a DIY bike repair bay, toilets, and a drinking fountain.

The bike arrival station provides an outstanding ‘end of trip’ facility for

students and staff and supports sustainable transport at Monash.

To register to use the bike arrival station, visit monash.edu/bike-arrival

Many Monash students are eligible for discounted public transport. The discounts available differ for domestic and international students. Typically, undergraduate students who enrol in full time study are eligible. To check your eligibility go to www.monash.edu/connect/travel/travel-concessions.• Eligible domestic

undergraduate students can order a transport concession form in the Web Enrolment System (WES) – go to the ‘Student Services’ section and click ‘Apply for transport concession’.

• Eligible international undergraduate students can purchase an iUSEpass

(www.iusepass.vic.gov.au) to receive 50% off the cost of an annual myki.

Melbourne train network

The Bikery is a volunteer-run bike shop that sells parts, accessories, and refurbished bikes, performs small repairs, and gives general cycling advice. The Bikery is located at Monash Sport, 42 Scenic Boulevard, Clayton campus.

Open during semester Mon–Fri 10am–4pm

A list of bike shops across Melbourne can be found at www.bicyclenetwork.com.au/find/shop

Access and mobility

TrainsAll train stations, apart from Heyington Station, are wheelchair accessible.

If you need help boarding a train, wait on the platform near the front of the train. The train driver will help you board and depart the train by producing a ramp.

Premium Stations are staffed from the first to last train every day and have accessible facilities including toilets, public phones and parking.

TramsThere are more than 100 low-floor trams on Melbourne’s tram network, which offer allocated spaces for passengers using wheelchairs or mobilitiy aids. This area is inside the double door and marked with a wheelchair symbol.

Some low-floor trams have buttons that alert the driver to activate a ‘bridging plate’ to bridge the gap between the tram and the platform, while other trams have a specially marked call button

that overrides the automatic door closing mechanism to allow extra time to enter and exit the tram.

BusesMore than 80% of Melbourne’s bus services are wheelchair accessible, including SmartBus, SkyBus, and NightRider buses. At the stop, the bus driver places a ramp between the front door of the bus and the kerb of the road.

For station and stop profiles visit ptv.vic.gov.au

TaxisWheelchair accessible taxis can be booked through Silver Top Taxis on 131008 or Yellow Cabs on 13CABS.

Travellers AidTravellers Aid provides practical travel-related support and aid to travellers that helps them travel independently and confidently, regardless of their background.

General information

Carpooling at MonashPublic transport apps

Still want to drive?

For more information or to register to search for and advertise rides go to www.monash.edu/people/transport-parking/carpooling

There are a number of apps that provide personalised train, tram and bus information.

PTV app (iOS and Android)

The free PTV app has journey planner, service times, and real-time tram arrival information. See ptv.vic.gov.au/getting-around/mobile-apps.

tramTracker®

Use tramTracker® to check real-time tram arrival information and personalise your results to see individual routes and find low-floor trams. See yarratrams.com.au/tramtracker

metroNotify

Use metroNotify to receive push notifications with information about your selected train lines. See metrotrains.com.au/metronotify

Melbourne Train Trapper

Use Android app, Melbourne Train Trapper to find times for Metro trains, detect your location, and display upcoming trains at your nearest station.

TrainTrapper

Use the iOS app, TrainTrapper to look up your next train arrival time and report a delay.

For updates on bus stop locations please see the following webpage for more details. http://www.monash.edu/about/our-locations/clayton-campus/monash-transport-interchange

Monash shuttle bus services run express in both directions from Clayton to Berwick, Clayton to Caulfield and Clayton to Peninsula campuses.

‘Car dooring’ can cause serious injury to cyclistsTo avoid doors, look:• through car windows

for heads• in mirrors of trucks and vans• at cars that have just parked • at car tail lights.

Watch the door zone If you can’t see into cars, ride slower or move out of the door zone. Be aware of what’s behind you if you have to swerve out.

Take a lane if you’re being forced into the door zone.

If a door opensUse your brakes and slow down. Move out of the door zone, but don’t swing into traffic.

If you get hitIf you’re hit by a door and injury or damage results, it’s a traffic accident and details must be exchanged. Report uncooperative motorists to the police.

Use a D-Lock Cables are easily cut. Get a good D-lock or armoured cable. Using a cable and D-lock together is even more secure.

Where and how to lockAlways lock your bike, even when it’s at home. Lock in visible areas with lots of people around.

Don’t lock to ‘sucker poles’ that can be lifted out of the ground. Check your lock before leaving.

Secure your bike Remove your lights or secure them with super glue or cable ties.

Replace quick releases with bolts or secure with hose clamps.

If your bike is stolen If your bike is stolen, report it immediately to the police. Look in second hand shops but don’t tell staff. If you find it then call the police.

CyclingCar doors

Bikes are legal vehicles covered by the Victorian Road Rules. You must have a warning device on your bike like a bell or horn. You must wear an approved helmet. What you can doCyclists can pass on the left, but not if a car is indicating and turning left. Cyclists can ride two abreast and a third rider may overtake. You must use a bike lane or path if it is practical to do so.Bike lightsIf you’re riding at night or in other low-light conditions

you must have a white light on the front of your bike and a red light on the rear. These lights may be flashing or static and must be visible from at least 200 metres. Your bike must also have a red rear reflector visible from 50 metres.Laws for othersCars cannot double park or park in bike lanes marked ‘No stopping’, ‘No standing’ or ‘Clearway’.This is not a full statement of the law. TOP TIP: Take care when crossing tracks

Cross tram tracks at a wide angle and take particular care in wet conditions when tracks can be slippery.

When cycling in traffic, be visible and confident at all times. Maintain a safe distance between you and any traffic hazards and always be prepared to take evasive action. When turning right, hand signal so cars know you are turning.Depending on lane width and traffic speed, keep left or take the lane.Positioning in trafficBe aware of drivers’ blind spots to the side and next to their back doors.

Riding in the wetWatch out for slippery tram tracks, grates and metal covers, especially when turning. Squeeze your brakes gently before stopping to clear water off the rims. You and others will have a longer stopping distance in the wet.Be reflective Add reflective tape, fabric and stickers to your helmet, clothing, shoes, bike and bag. Source reflective items from fabric shops, hardware stores, and boating and bike shops.

TOP TIP: Take the lane at roundabouts

When using a single-lane roundabout, ride in the middle of the lane so you are more visible and less likely to be

cut off when other road users exit the roundabout. Signal your intentions and make eye contact with others.

TOP TIP: Ride outside the door zone

Aim to ride far enough away from parked vehicles that your handlebar would not clip an open car door.

Don’t be afraid to ride towards the right side of the bike lane.

TOP TIP: Take a hook turn

If a right-hand turn leaves you feeling exposed in an intersection, try a hook turn. Bike riders are entitled to use a hook turn at any intersection unless signage prohibits it.
