The North West Department of Econom-ic Development, Environment, Conserva-tion and Tourism’s green scorpions are up in arms in dealing with illegal selling of animals in Ngaka Modiri Molema. This came after an arrest of three men for illegal fish netting and bird catching at Modimola Dam and Ramatlabama respec-tively. The suspects are a Mozambican man who had entered the country illegally and was found carrying forged documents, one In-dian man and a Coloured man. The suspects were arrested after the Depart-

ment got an anonymous tip from commu-nity members from both areas. The suspects have been detained at Mma-batho and Mahikeng police stations. Charges of illegal fish netting and bird catching without permits in terms of Section 73 of the Transvaal Ordinance 12 of 1983 were registered. A Mozambican will also be charged for illegal immigration and posses-sion of forged documents. The green scorpions confiscated 3 nets, tent, a canoe and other equipments from Mozam-bican man and fifty (50) wild canary birds, 18 cages, 2 patching stands and rat glue and

a licensed firearm from the other two sus-pects arrested for illegal bird catching. The suspects whom were caught with the birds are both aged thirty-seven (37) and re-side in Danville. The Department is against these operations as it contravene to trade with indigenous an-imals without a permit that authorises such operations. “Green scorpions are working around the clock to show communities the seriousness of illegal operations. With these cases we want to send clear message to perpetrators

that if not complying with relevant legisla-tions they will be put behind bars as we are working with all police enforcement agen-cies.” said Jonathan Denga, Acting Direc-tor: Biodiversity Management. “We thank the communities from the af-fected areas for blowing the whistle and urge others to do the same. The Department will continue to ensure compliance in terms of National Environmental Biodiversity Management Act (NEBMA) 10 of 2004 and Transvaal Nature Ordinance 12 of 1983,” said Denga.

MTN South Africa has issued a warning to its customers of a new SIM swap scam that has emerged. This is another attempt by malicious users to obtain the personal banking details of MTN customers. The syndicate sends an email similar to the following:“Dear Client, We have discovered a suspected sim swap attempt on your no. The swap will be processed within the next hour. If you did not initiate this sim swap, please Cancel here.”The “cancel” link redirects the user to a site that requests his or her banking details. Once sup-

plied, the criminals can then use the information to make fraudu-lent transactions from the bank-ing account. Customers should note that MTN does not send any SIM swap warnings to its customers via email. Furthermore, custom-ers must ignore any such emails and should report them to 083 123 STOP (7867). As an additional safeguard to its customers, MTN will be block-ing the site on its network. MTN is committed to ensur-ing the safety of its customers and continues to address all il-legal and criminal activities that might affect them.

MAHIKENG - North West Province offers easily available skills and distribution channels imperative for commercial ventures into Africa and is well located to be used as a shared services hub for the companies’ African operations, especially for Sub-Saharan coun-

tries, said Premier Thandi Modise during her key note address at the recently held BRICS Expo and Interna-tional Trade and Tourism Conference in the city. Through this conference the North West is emphasis-ing its commitment to trade, investment and economic

growth. “This event provides us with an opportunity to tell a good economic story, a good tourism story and a good environ-mental story, not only through international exposure but also through assisting our SMMEs and cooperatives with

finance, grants and other supportive mechanisms in order to create a conducive environment for them to thrive”, said MEC for Department of Economic, Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, Motlalepula Rosho. The North West BRICS Expo and International Trade and Tourism Conference is aimed at providing international and local business with valuable insight and exposure on how to leverage South Africa’s inclusion in the BRIC grouping, while showcasing the North West Province’s attractiveness as an investment destination. The Conference was attended by close to 500 delegates across all sectors of the economy inclusive both national and provincial departments. Part of the conference was the exhibition centre in which 78 companies were afforded an opportunity to showcase their products and services. “National Tourism has set up incentives to assist South African companies in the tourism sector to showcase their products at the World Cup which will be held in Brazil. The North West province will be the 1st to benefit from the incentives, said Deputy Minister Tokozile Xasa.
