Remember, you must be a member of the IEEE and VTS to receive reimbursement. If you have not joined IEEE, go to www.ieee.org and click on “Join IEEE”. We had a successful meeting with 29 attending on the 14th and 24 on the 15th and it was held at the World Trade Centre Edmonton on the first day and at the D.L. MacDonald Light Rail maintenance facility on the second day. Introductions of those attending were given and then Mr. Jamal Baroudi of the Edmonton Transit System welcomed us and discussed the system. Breakfast and lunch for the 14th were compliments of EPCOR Technologies of Edmonton. Mr. Baroudi was thanked for hosting the meeting and a special thanks was given to Alan Blatchford of Platinum Engineering for making the arrangements for the hotel and with Edmonton Transit to host the meeting. The minutes of the last meeting were accepted by voice vote. Travel funding was briefly discussed. It was requested that all reimbursement requests be submitted in a timely manner after the meeting. Dinner logistics were discussed. The dinner was sponsored by Southwire and Mr. Breck Booker was to give a presentation on copper versus aluminum cables. Meeting locations were discussed. It was pointed out that the Traction Power Substation Committee only wants to meet twice a year due to conflicts with other meetings. The committee was asked whether they want to have only two meetings or continue with the three meetings per year. The group overwhelming agreed to continue with three meetings a year. The spring meeting was discussed which will be in conjunction with the IEEE/ASME Joint Rail Conference. TPSS Committee will meet on April 18th, the joint conference with presented papers will be on the 19th and OCS will meet on the 20th. Harvey Glickenstein addressed the committee and asked that members submit abstracts for technical papers for this conference. All abstracts must be submitted by October 1st of this year. The next meeting was discussed and it will be in Los Angeles, California on January 23rd and 24th at LA Metro. It will only be a meeting of the OCS Committee. The fall meeting date is to be determined but Traction Power Substations wants to meet the week of October 29th. The location is to be determined. It was pointed out the OCS web site is updated frequently and information pertaining to the meetings will be posted. As hotel information becomes available, it will be sent out to the Committee. Paul White reported that only two people remain that require payment for travel prior to 2006 and that a request would be made to all the private sector members

to donate $200.00 to the Transit Agency Travel Fund. Once these individuals are paid, the request for donations will no longer be necessary. Working Group chairpersons are responsible for their standard and as such, operating procedural rules have been formulated for guidance. These have been placed on the OCS web site. The status of standards and the report of the working group chairperson were presented. Standard P1629 Pantographs: Ron Bennell reported that all questions by ballotors were addressed and that Jeff Sisson is finalizing the standard and it should be done in a week. Standard P1627 Surge Arrestors: Ramesh Dhingra reported that the standard is complete and ready for ballot. Standard P1791 OCS Terminology: Chris Pagni reported has been sent to the IEEE editorial review board for balloting. Potential standard for live line maintenance: Ray Davis reported that work is progressing and it is being put into IEEE format and that they are ready to apply for a Project Authorization Request (PAR). Trolley wire marking potential standard: Paul White reported that Steve Gilchrist has worked out what the markings will be and is progressing with the written portion of the standard. Disconnect Switch potential standard: Daren Zsekely reported that they have received various sections from the working group and it is being put into IEEE format. A PAR will be acquired. Standard P 1833 Design Criteria: Moises Ramos reported that the working group members have written their particular sections and it has been compiled in the IEEE format for review. Moises led a committee discussion in a review of all segments of the standard for general review, not a line-by-line review. This was extremely productive and the committee had meaningful comments on all sections. Moises will incorporate these into the document. Lunch was compliments of ENMAX and after lunch, the review of Standard P1833 continued for the rest of the day. The dinner and the ‘cocktails and conversation’ hour took place in the hotel and was quite good. Breck Booker of Southwire gave a presentation on the

comparison of aluminum versus copper cables for underground and overhead feeders. The presentation will be sent to Paul White who will post it on the web. During the second day of the meeting, the discussion of standard P1833 continued. After lunch which was provided by Platinum Engineering (who also provided breakfast), a tour was of the Edmonton Transit light rail maintenance facility including the CAT truck used for inspection of the OCS. The tour continued where all rode the light rail to the south side and Jamal Baroudi of ETS discussed the OCS and pole foundations. The meeting adjourned in the field. Again, I wish to thank you for attending the meeting and participating in the committee and I look forward to seeing you at the next one which will be held on January 23rd and 24th 2012 in Los Angeles at LA Metro. As soon as the particulars are firmed up, I will send out a notice of the meeting and hotel information. I especially wish to thank Alan Blatchford of Platinum Engineering for setting up the hotel, dinner and meeting arrangements. This was a tremendous amount of work and the committee appreciates Alan’s efforts. We also extend our gratitude to Breck Booker of Southwire for hosting the dinner and presenting a very interesting and meaningful topic in his presentation.
