Harley Rose Taich was born and raised in La Jolla, California. Harley began swimming at five

months of age and routinely enjoyed the warm waters of Hanalei Bay. Surf, sand and the mother ocean provided comfort to Harley and she was filled with great joy to receive a pink surfboard on her fourth birthday which her father shaped. Harley surfed competitively from age eight until age fifteen when she sustained a

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) during a competition. Four years post injury, Harley no longer competes, but support, encourages and shares her story with others suffering and recovering from similar injuries.

Initially, it was her intention to educate others of brain injury awareness, however she quickly realized most intentions are limitations. Intentions come from the ego and actually limit what is possible in life. Once Harley no longer felt victim

of this tragic accident, she felt more powerful than she ever felt possible and was able to direct her life in the direction she wanted to go. Harley is not in control, but she has choices and has received inspiration greater than any ego. Harley is now an inspiration to many around the world, providing daily feedback and support to many inquiries she receives on her blog www.itsharleyrose.com, Facebook and headsup4kids.com site daily.

NOTICE OF ANNUAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERSHIPOF THE LA JOLLA GOLDEN TRIANGLE ROTARY CLUB FOUNDATION: MAY 27, 2016Date, Time and Purpose of Annual Meeting:At the regular meeting of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club on May 27, 2016, The La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club Foundation will hold its annual meeting of the Membership of the Foundation. The only item of business will be the election of two directors to replace the expiring terms of ANTONIO GRILLO-LOPEZ and LINDA STOUFFER, whose terms will expire as of June 30, 2016. Both Antonio and Linda desire to run for reelection as Directors. However, any “Member” of the Foundation may nominate herself or himself to run for election as a Director. If you believe it would be in the best interests of the Foundation for you to run for election as a Director of the Foundation please email the Foundation Secretary, Eric O. Freeberg ([email protected]), on or before 5:00 pm on May 20, 2015 and in that email you must include a short description (not to exceed one page) of your qualifications and why you want to be considered for election. Any nominations not submitted by that deadline, or which do not include a qualification statement, will NOT be considered. Reporter: Eric O. Freeberg

President Bev opened the meeting -- Hurrah for all the teachers, today we celebrate the 2016 Educator of the Year award! Here to present the award is our ROTD, our always smiling Dave Wiegman. ••• Dave -- philosophizing on life, love, and values noted -- It’s my first Mother’s Day without my mom, we just lost George at 92, Father Wayne baptized both my daughters, now 19 and 23. We are all family. I took a test to determine my strengths, not my weaknesses. My greatest strength is GRATITUDE! 95% of information is negative. But you can become happier if you tell someone three things you are grateful for during ten days. Do it and you will see! Denny got up once and said his favorite word is gratitude. I am grateful for that and here’s a cup for Denny from Denny’s! Nice Dave!

President Bev -- Before the educator award, some announcements...

Please sign up for the San Diego Oasis project on Saturday, June 4 at 9:00am to do carpet cleaning. Also, please sign up to provide ads in our next club membership catalogue, we need the money to pay for the new directory! ••• Rick Clark -- Miramar project is now on May 21, check the sign-up sheet and don’t forget the Rotary logo handout that is needed to get onto the base. ••• President Bev -- Keith Jeffers has returned to the club!! Welcome back!

Rick Binder introducing guests -- Welcome to returning SDSU Rotaractors! If you don’t continue to show up, you will need to do push-ups! ••• Bonnie and Krishna -- Meet our distinguished visitor Anthony Richards, past DG from Lahore, Pakistan. ••• Pres. Bev exchanges banners and Krishna reminds us of Rotary’s 100th anniversary in 2017. Anthony gives Bev a polio

cap saying polio WILL BE eradicated in Pakistan. And, in more good news -- the next Lahore DG will be a first-ever woman!! Big applause from everyone. ••• Jim Davies -- we have Thank You gifts for the fundraiser worker bees: LJGT official bottle openers for Tony Grillo, Erik Mjoen, Tom Hinton, and Wayne Davis!! For Alex Monroe – an exclusive, invaluable metal wheel with Rotary sticker in honor of the Founding Father of the Festival! Plus some imperial beer to go. Alex returns compliments to Jim for a great job!! Party to celebrate at Malahat on the 25th! Sign up!

Members sent positive energy to Emidio’s wife Meg who is facing some medical challenges, but now is doing better.

Erik introduced the Preuss Student of the Month -- Elisabeth Guerrero. We recognize students who have overcome obstacles and have become outstanding students involved in Volunteer work. Elisabeth’s dream is to study criminal justice and work for the FBI. Good luck!

Linda Andrews -- 2 more weeks left to bring in books for the San Diego Literacy Program. Education starts with reading.Pres. Bev -- and now Dave will present the Educator of the Year Award!!Dave -- this is the 17th Educator of the Year Award. Bill Busch has run it for a decade! I’m his substitute, in Rich Papike’s jacket! Since I’m new at this,

I have signs telling you when to laugh and when to say “so true.” And since we are talking education, I’m trying to figure out how to pay for my kids’ college

education. They are smart enough to get into great colleges,

but I’m middle class enough to be sucked dry. Now

to the educators. They have a ripple

effect on people’s life, like a boulder thrown into water, as opposed to a pebble... Steve Brown is a Rotary boulder...

Present are the principals of the four schools where the finalists teach. Jeff Olivero; University City High (UCH), Scott Barton; the Preuss School, UCSD, Kimberly Moore; Doyle Elementary School, and, Gary Krahn; La Jolla Country Day School (LJCD). A number of family, friends and previous award winners are present. ••• The Finalists are: Richard Norton (UCH), Krista Bartlett, the Preuss School, Hanna Wong (Doyle), and Chad Przymus (LJCD.) All amazing educators, loved and respected by students and parents, and with high educational impact on the children’s’ lives. They are competing with 600 teachers for this award!

... and the winner is Krista Bartlett at Preuss!! Krista is making a significant difference for students with learning disabilities, such as auditory processing disorder and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Her students take on between 4 and 10 AP classes each! Only 2 percent of kids with disabilities will take on 1 AP class nationally! Congratulations Krista!!

Dave’s final joke: When I went to school as a kid, my dad used to say “get 100”, pause... or two 50s!!!

I grew up in Pasadena, the home of the Huntington Library, home of so many

classic portraits. As I was growing up, my parents always made portrait photography part of our lives, as it had been when they were growing up.

As my own children grew, I de-veloped a deeper appreciation of how important those photo-graphs had become in my life. Because my parents passed away when I was in my 20’s, these memories of my family have become my own link to the past, and a way my fam-ily now can connect with their history.

As my interest in photography grew, enhanced by a degree in the Classics, he also developed an interest in portrait painting, especially studying the work of Sargent, Renoir, Cassat and Rockwell. Trips to gal-leries in the Louvre and Orsay, the Getty, the British Museum and Chicago Art Museum gave me the opportunity to absorb how other portraitists created their looks.

My early photographic ca-reer, too, instilled the val-

ues of composition as well as simple but effective lighting in the creation of portraits. Work with masters like Phil-lip Stewart Charis, Monte Zucker and Dean Collins honed the look. Instructing other photographers around the country, writing for the PROFESSIONAL PHOTOG-RAPHER and earning the title of Craftsman Photographer taught the value of studying my craft.

I started photographing wed-dings from my dorm room at the Claremont colleges back when Nixon was presi- dent and film was the only way to record images. A great deal has changed since 1968, but my fascination with photogra-phy, and ultimately the stories of the people I have photo-graphed, has made every day of my 48 years as a portrait photographer as interesting as the first. I consider myself very fortunate to be in-volved in what I love do-ing every day.
