Hay storage losses can be a major economic impact in any livestock operation. This is especially true for a high precipitation region such as NE MN. In the December 1st, 2017 Progressive Forage magazine, William Edwards wrote a wonder-ful review article summarizing thir-teen research papers which sug-gested an average loss with no storage treatment to be roughly 27%. What that means is on average more than 25% of each bale gets wasted, or another way to consider this is just think about hauling ¼ of new bales into the woods in-stead of bringing them to your livestock! Now you would never consider doing that, but the point is let’s think about and try and pre-serve the investment you have made in getting that forage into a bale. Within these research projects sev-en different treatments were con-sidered ranging from on the ground without cover to inside of a building. The hay losses on aver-age ranged from 5 –27% loss. It is important to think about bale

handling. For example, place bales on a ridge with good drainage or on well drained soils instead of next to the cow yard. Also consid-er putting down a well-drained base so water drains away. This question has been previously attempted but until using the “Iowa State Extension Decision Maker Spreadsheet” comparisons were difficult. This spreadsheet allows you to plug in data based on your bale size, bale number, hay value, cost/hr., interest rate, etc. Which then are compared in up to eight stor-age options at one time. In one example given by Progressive Forage author William Edwards, the spreadsheet for the sample opera-tion suggested a total cost for for-age supply ranging from $93,493/year to the lowest at $77,098/year. This is a cost savings of over 21% per year! Visit www.extension.iastate.edu/agdm/decisionaidscd.html to download this spreadsheet and run your own comparisons. Contact me for assistance.

YOU TH DEV E L OPM ENT Interested in Joining 4-H?

There are currently seven 4-H clubs in Carlton County. All youth in grades K through one year past high school are invit-ed to join!

Clubs meet at least six times a year (up to ten times a year) either in community centers, schools, churches or homes. Club meetings typically last 1-1.5 hours. There are generally three parts to a 4-H club meeting: business, recreation and program or activity. Healthy snacks are a favorite part of the gathering! Call the Extension Office for club contact information.

Opportunities to Explore Leadership

All youth in grade seven and above are invited to attend the Carlton County 4-H Federation and Ambassadors (pictured at right). Meetings are held on the second Monday evening of each month. The purpose of the Federation/Ambassador program is to create opportunities for teen 4-H members to develop leader-ship skills. Participating youth learn decision making skills while planning, implementing, and evaluating 4-H events.

Donate Children’s Books to 4-H!! The Carlton County 4-H Federation/Ambassador group is collecting children's books. We are working with the United Way to provide books to two Little Blue Book Shelves in Clo-quet. Books should be in fairly good condition and be geared to pre-school and elementary age youth. Books can be dropped off at the Exten-sion Office in Carlton. Children that visit the Little Blue Book Shelves are encour-aged to take books home to promote reading.

Esko Cloverleafs Light Up Cloverville At their November meeting, the Esko Cloverleafs partici-pated in an activity where the 4-H youth were electrical

contractors hired to put in some light switches at Hand-some Headley Hart’s Health Club in Cloverville. They had to design and build three different lighting circuits us-ing a variety of electrical components. Here are some members of the Esko Club demonstrating their success!

Countywide Cloverbud Meetings Resume in February

The new Countywide Cloverbuds group met in October and November. The topic of our No-vember session was ”Cloverbuds Talk Turkey” where we learned some turkey trivia and made pine cone turkeys (demonstrated by Liam to the right). We will be taking December and January off and

will meet again on Monday, February 26th at 5 p.m. at the Carlton County Extension Office. All youth that are Cloverbud age (grades K-2) are invited to attend 4-H Countywide Cloverbuds. Activities are developmentally appropriate, non-competitive, and activity based. Many of the things we make in “Countywide Cloverbuds” will be items youth can bring to county fair next summer.

New 4-H Electronics Project to start in February

Are you interested in circuits, capacitors, transistors and resistors? If yes, consider join-ing the new Carlton County 4-H Electronics Project Group! Just look around and you will see that electronics are everywhere, so learning how they work lets you be a creator not just a user. Learning about electronics also sharpens your problem solving skills, provides a foundation for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields and is great hands-on fun! Carlton County 4-H members in grades 5 and above will learn basic component level electronics including resis-tors, capacitors, transistors and integrated circuits. Youth will be building, testing and troubleshooting their very own electronic circuits through the practical application of physics and mathematics. Meetings start Tuesday, February 6th (1 evening a month from 6:30-8 p.m. for 6 months. Kits cost $25. Please contact the Extension Office (218) 384-3511 by Friday, January 5th, 2018 to sign up!

Rowdy Wranglers 4-H Club Shops for Presents

The Rowdy Wranglers 4-H Horse Club met on Sunday, December 3rd for a holi-day celebration of pizza and games fol-lowed up by a group shopping spree. They are pictured here with two carts of presents that they purchased for their adopt-a-family.
