The Product

Dave Long learned that bycooking the corn in thecattle’s feed, the cattle’sweight gains werecomparable to the gainsof cattle implanted withhormones, but withoutthe potentially harmfuleffects of the implantedhormone residues. Bycooking and pelletizingthe feed, the cattleresponded well to thefeed, eating more and, inturn, gaining weight morerapidly.

Since the feed was cooked and all of the ingredients were pelletized together the calf receives the complete nutrition of the feed with each bite. The calf ingests grain, roughage and vitamin supplements in each pellet. Most importantly, unlike conventional feeding systems, the calf can’t eat too much of just one part of the feed and not receive any of another part.Confidential Property of Healthy Beef, Inc. & Reconstruction Partners, LLC

The Product

In conventional feedlots, cattle tend to pick only the portion of the feed that tastes best leaving the other nutrients and roughage needed for a balanced diet and consistent weight gain. The Beef Program resulted in no bloating or stomach problems, good weight gains and more uniform carcasses by comparison.

While others have tried utilizing pelletized feed, to our knowledge, the Better Beef proprietary formula is the only complete ration that has been successfully deployed. The cattle chosen for the program were Holstein from dairies. Three day old Holstein steers are shipped to contract farms where they are bucket fed. Pellets are introduced to Holstein calves at one week of age.

Brief Situational & Business Analysis

The Cattle business has been a business where the processes for bringing beef to market are as varied as only imagination constrains. Therefore the results are as varied and unpredictable as are the processes.

Antibiotics and hormones have riddled the U.S. Beef supply to the extent that exports to Europe and the Mideast are virtually nil.

The ability to trace the origin of the supply of beef is limited which is a strong safety concern.

The quality issues are riddled with inconsistencies and the consumer is frequently disappointed.

For the chain restaurant industry, those inconsistencies have both made and lost customers.

Science has for many years decried the consumption of beef as “bad for you” touting concerns over cholesterol, calories, and unsaturated fat.

The chain restaurant industry is faced with a “dissenter vote” that moves a group of diners to another restaurant with “healthier” fare.

However, the U.S. consumer still eats beef with a frequency to the tune of 60+ pounds per person per year.
