In manufacturing, cutting processes are often a considerablecost factor. M-Steel lowers these costs by allowing high cuttingspeeds and a non-interrupted production environment. With acutting speed of up to 30 % over conventional steels.

M-Steels are based on engineering steel. M-treatment meansthat all production processes are thoroughly controlled toachieve optimal cutting ability while maintaining impressivesteel properties. It also means that many design solutionsare compensated for this difference in properties; in otherwords, overdesigned, and therefore not reaping full benefitof modern steel technology. M-Steels meet the requirementsof the EN standards.

Advantages of M-Steel

• The steel always has the same even and highmachinability properties

• There are virtually no variations in the cuttingconditions

• Reduced need to change tools or cutting data

The M-Steel concept

• Every stage of manufacture is optimized toimprove machinability

• Modification and control of non metallicinclusions with calcium treatment

• Quality assurance, e.g. machining test• Customer Service:

VALUE-ADDED STEEL

IQ-Steel® – isotropic quality

Further downsizing and increased stress are the two majorfactors confronting steel components of the future. Anaccelerating drive for improved performance has to bematched by the properties of the material.

Uniform and excellent properties– in all directions

A specific problem is that many steel components aresubject to loading in multiaxial directions. This calls fora material with uniform and excellent properties thatcan handle movement in all directions, not only in therolling direction. Standard products usually do not havethis capacity because they have poor fatigue and impactproperties in the transverse rolling direction. The reason isvery simple: inclusions are crushed and elongated in thesteel’s rolling direction. The result: a dramatic differencebetween the properties in the transverse as compared to thelongitudinal direction. This difference can be detrimental tothe component.

Increased lifetime of the component

Inclusions have an important impact on the mechanicalproperties of the steel and they must be minimized. Theexeptional cleanliness of IQ-Steel increases the life of thecomponent.

Better isotropic behaviour of the steel results in a morereliable component. The IQ-Steels are tailored in ametallurgical pro-cess that gives isotropic properties to thesteel after rolling.

IQ-Steel offer superior physical properties

Advantages of IQ-Steel

• Longer life for components

• More reliable components

• Uniform and excellent properties in alldirections

• Consistent quality with tests carried outon every batch

• Isotropic structure

• Minimized inclusions

• Improved mechanical properties

• Adaptable to optimal delivery needs

Our hot-rolled bars are available in a widerange of sizes. They are characterized byclose tolerances, excellent straightness as

well as roundness, good surfaces and lowdecarburization. This makes them ideally suitedfor forging and machining.

Size range

Standard hot-rolled bars are delivered in diameters from13 mm to 200 mm, and in many different sizes. Up toØ 75 mm they can be delivered at 1 mm intervals. Largerdimensions are available at 5 mm intervals.

Tolerances on dimensions and shape

The tolerances on dimensions and shape for round bars EN10060 fulfill the European standards. Our rolling mills haveexcellent capability to produce tighter tolerances, including, half the standard tolerance. Please contact our salesorganization when enquiring and ordering hot-rolled bars iftighter tolerances are needed.

Lengths

The most common bar length is 6 meters, but can alsorange between 3.5 and 18 meters, depending on theproducing rolling mill. Heat treatments may restrict themaximum length.

Manufacturing lengths

If not otherwise specified, the manufacturing length is6000 mm (+200 mm). Bar diameter, heat treatment andyield optimization may result in a deviation from thiscommon length. Ten percent of the bars may be below theminimum of the ordered range, but not less than 3 meters.

Exact lengths

At the time of the order, bars can be delivered sawn toexact lengths.

Roundness

Out of roundness is measured as the difference between themaximum and minimum diameters. Out of roundness is at

most two-thirds of the diameter tolerance.

Straightness

Straightness is measured as the maximum height of arch;in other words, the largest deviation from the straight line.Normally the test length is 1.0 meter. Normal straightness is2 mm/meter maximum.

Hot-rolled round bar

Surface quality

Standard surface crack depth is max. 1 % of diameter. When an order is made the bars can be inspected, forexample, by magnetic dispersion or the magnetic particlemethod. Normally, surface quality class D can be achievedfor diameters up to Ø 80 mm and C for diameters up toØ 120 mm that comply with EN 10221.

End executions

Smaller sizes, in the range of Ø 75–90 mm, are normallycold sheared. Larger sizes are hot sawn or abrasive cut.Deburred ends and other end executions are availableaccording to requirements.

OVAKO’S DIMENSIONAL PROGRAM FOR FLAT BAR

Flat bar

Ovako’s flat bars, made either from structural steel, springsteel or boron steel, are developed for applications requiringhigh strength, good bendability and weldability. In addition, our steel offers benefits such as good impact toughness and

high yield strength.

The steel used in Ovako’s flat bars for spring manufacturinghas very low levels of non-metallic inclusions and optimalhardenability. These contribute to a favorable yield-to-tensilestrength ratio in the quenched and tempered condition – acombination of properties that provides exactly the rightproperties for the end product.

Special properties bar

Special properties round bar, commonly known as SP-Bars,is the result of Ovako’s never-ending product development.SP-Bars are not limited to any specific steel grade, whichcreates opportunities for customers wishing to use thisadvanced technology. By optimizing the properties ofthe bar material, customers can benefit from increasedadded value and substantial cost savings in manufacturingoperations.

Size range: 13–50 mmLengths: 4–12 m

Tolerances

SP-Bars offer extremely tight tolerances. ConsequentlySP-Bars can often replace peeled or drawn bar. Customerscan decrease the nominal size and get more manufactured

pieces per ton of purchased SP-Bar.

Surface quality

Scale thickness is generally reduced on SP-Bars. Thereduction can be up to 50 % compared to conventionallyhot-rolled products. The reduced scale thickness gives acleaner environment in subsequent operations such as coldforming or heat treatment.

Round corner square bar

Square bars or billets are mainly used for drop-forgedcomponents in the automotive industry. Ovako’s roundcorner square bars have a uniform internal structure anda very good surface quality – absolute requirements when

producing drop-forged parts.

VALUE-ADDED BAR PRODUCTS

Cromax – Hard-chrome plated bars

Cromax 280X

Cromax 280X is based on a low carbon, microalloyed steelcombining high strength with excellent machinability and

weldability.

For diameters up to 90 mm, yield and tensile strength are20 % higher than is normal for hard-chrome bars based onlow-carbon weldable steel. This improvement is achievedwithout detriment to machinability or weldability.

In comparison with standard products based on grade20MnV6, the superior properties profile of Cromax 280Xoffers a number of potential advantages in the design andmanufacture of fluid-power cylinders. One advantage is thepossibility to downsize piston rods without loss of load-bearing capacity, thereby reducing not only weight but alsocost.

Chrome layerFor diameters more than 20 mm, the chrome layer thicknessis 20 µm min. For smaller sizes, the minimum thickness is15 µm.

Surface roughnessThe surface roughness (Ra) is always less than 0.2 µm andnormally in the range 0.05–0.15 µm. Rt (ISO) is always lessthan 2.0 µm and normally in the range 0.5–1.5 µm.

Seamless tube and

hollow bar

Our tube products are characterized by uniformproperties, close tolerances and small machiningallowances. Ovako’s tubes and hollow bars areused when there are stringent demands on thematerial, such as within the rolling bearing, automotive, hydraulic and general engineeringindustries.

Standard items and stock program

As a service to our customers we have standard tubeprogram offering smaller order quantities and shorter lead

time than we normally require for a production batch.Ovako has two such standard programs; both have thetubes stocked at our mill as well as at some of our salescompanies and appointed distributors.

In addition to the Bearing steel program and the Ovako 280hollow bar program we supply tubes in all Ovako standardsteel grades.

Bearing steel program

This program covers roughly 350 tube sizes fromOD 30 to 250 mm.

Ovako 280 hollow bar program

This program covers carbon hollow bar in gradeOvako 280 based on the standard EN 10294.We keep roughly 350 dimensions in stock fromOD 50 to 243 mm.

Both the bearing steel tube and the Ovako 280 hollow barprogram are based on the tight machining allowances. Foreach item we show a guaranteed finished turned size foreither inner or outer chucking.

Heat treatmentOur tubes can be supplied in the following heat-treatedconditions of combinations thereof:• Normalized

• Soft annealed

Hot-rolled tubes, cold-worked tubes

Machining allowances

In most cases we sell a tube for a specific application. Tosupport this all tubes are delivered with a guaranteed finish

machined size. Since we produce our products as close tofinal clean machined components as possible, our entiresize range requires minimal machining, with inner or outercentering on a maximum part length of 2.5 x OD. For longerparts an extra allowance is calculated.

TolerancesThe level of a machining allowance is calculated from thetube tolerances. To support our small machining allowancesOvako has very tight tolerances across the entire size range, both with regard to outer diameter and wall thickness, aswell as other parameters such as straightness and ovality. Inpractice, this means less machining and better yield for the

user, resulting in lower component production costs.OD/Wall tolerancesAs shown in the table below.

StraightnessThe maximum deviation from the straight line is 1 mm on agauge length of 1000 mm.

OvalityThe maximum out of roundness is 65 % of the total outerdiameter tolerance.

LengthsTubes can be delivered with random manufacturing lengthor to fix length with tight tolerances.

Pre-components from tube

An ever-increasing trend in industry is to buy pre-machinedor completely finished components. Ovako has recognizedthis and invested in the resources required to manufacturecomponents, in particular the supply of cut blanks and pre-

components such as chamfered blanks and sleeves.

Our production systems are designed to respond to bothshort lead times and product optimization to satisfy ourcustomers' requirements. The equipment is flexible and ableto handle small quantities of short runs as well as long-runmass-production batches. With wide experience in differenttypes of applications, and a thorough knowledge of ourproducts, Ovako is uniquely able to find an alternativesolution best suited to meet individual requirements.

Production program

The diameter, tolerances and surface finish of componentsare the same as those stated for the full length tube.

Outer diameter: 30–254 mm.

Lengths: 10–5000 mm.

Cut rings can be delivered shot blasted on request.

Chamfering can be done at fixed lengths: max length350 mm, max OD 130 mm and max weight 3.5 kg.

Deviations from square cut are within the tolerances above, albeit limited to the following values:

Deviations from square cut are to be maximum1.0 % of OD.

Deviations from square cut determine the tolerance whenthe deviation exceeds the tolerance.

Delivery execution

PackingThe components are supplied, packed in collared pallets, arranged randomly or stacked, either unprotected orwrapped in waxed paper or plastic shrink-wrapped,

depending on the method of transportation. Customerspecific packing specifications can also be met.

Labelling and markingMaterial delivered direct from our mill is labeled inaccordance with automotive standard, including with bothalphanumeric and bar code information. Customer specificdata can be added on request.

Hard-chromed plated tubes

The starting material for Cromax tube is either hot-finishedor cold-drawn tube in a microalloyed, low-carbon weldable

steel of 20MnV6 type. Cromax tube exhibits a goodcombination of strength and toughness along with excellentmachinability and weldabililty.

Ovako 280 – hollow bar

Ovako has an extensive hollow bar stock program withapproximately 250 dimensions based on the Ovako 280general structural steel grade. Ovako 280 is producedaccording to the same principles as our bearing steels,

which result in a steel with a very high degree of cleanlinessand greatest possible consistency with regards to properties.

Better economy of production

Thanks to the high strength of the tube in the hot-rolledcondition it can replace conventionally used, more expensivequenched and tempered tubes or eliminate heat treatmentduring component manufacturing. Due to the technologyused for the production the Ovako 280 hollow bar gets aninherent strength thanks to accurate monitoring of chemicalcomposition and high degree of cleanliness.

Tight tolerances throughout the whole size range will result

in higher yield and reduced costs for raw material andmachining. The tolerances of Ovako 280 hollow bar areconsiderably closer than those specified by the EN 10294,with regard to outer diameter and wall thickness.

Smoother production

The narrow limits of chemical composition of Ovako 280hollow bar contribute to a smoother production. Theoutcome of heat treatment is very consistent with small andpredictable dimensional changes.

Higher quality steel structures

Ovako 280 hollow bar carries a very low risk of failures

caused by detrimental inclusions. Fatigue strength isof decisive importance for the safety and life of steelstructures. Ovako 280 has achieved its high fatigue strengthdue to maintaining the same requirements on cleanliness ofthe steel as we have on steel for rolling bearings.

Ovako 280 hollow bar has good weldability and aminimized risk for brittle fracture of welds due to its lowcarbon equivalent.

The cleanliness and high surface finish of the Ovako 280hollow bar gives the best conditions for hard-chromeplating. The excellent straightness is also valuablefor producers of hydraulic cylinders or long slendercomponents.

Straightness

Maximum deviation from a straight line is 1 mm/m.

Ovality

Maximum ovality is 65 % of the total tolerance of the OD.

Finished dimensions

Finished dimensions are guaranteed for clean up of partlengths of maximum 3 x OD.

Advantages that gives Ovako 280hollow bar added value

• Versatility in properties cover many of thecustomer needs

Rolled and

 forged rings

As a producer of rolled and forged rings foralmost a century, Ovako has a proven track recordin this product niche. We strictly control thewhole production chain, from melt to the rollingof the rings. For example, to ensure the superiorquality of our rings, we carefully manage thelevels of oxygen content in the steel to ensure theproduction of a cleaner steel. Few ring producerscan match our commitment to consistent qualityfrom delivery to delivery.

As a result of our quality control, manufacturers can simplify

their production processes and reduce their costs becausethe rings are not only predictably consistent from batch tobatch, but also easy to process further.

Ovako produces profiled rings with very small allowancesand tight tolerances close to the final shape of the endproduct. In addition, our machined rings enable youto concentrate resources on finishing and/or assembly.Furthermore, Ovako can offer shot blasted rings ofdiameters up to 4000 mm and weights up to 5000 kg.

Rings can also be heat treated before delivery ina variety of executions such as:

• Normalized

A close profile meansless machining

Depending on the desired shape of your final product,we can roll rings with very small allowances and tight

tolerances. Some examples of typical profiles are shown below. Thespecialist will immediately see that this representativesample offers interesting solutions for many manufacturingchallenges. Near-net-shaped rings offer the buyer a totalcost that is substantially less than other conventionalmethods of production.

A near-net-shaped ring can be up to 50 % lighter thana cylindrical equivalent, while at the same time reducingmachining time and waste through lower volume, chipproduction and handling. Some surfaces may require nofurther machining at all. Our roll rings also demonstrate theexpertise that Ovako has that few other manufacturers can

match.

Size range

Rings are made in five different ring mills and one forgingpress. Outline production data is provided in the tablebelow:

Ring diameter Ring width Ring weight

Ring mill 8 170–380 mm 50–120 mm 7–20 kg

Ring mill 4 200–750 mm 100–230 mm 20–85 kg
