Enjoy the snow and sun! Program overview Fort Greely Adventure Programs and Outdoor Clinics are designed to teach outdoor skills, familiarize participants with the beautiful Alaskan wilderness, and provide meaningful recreational opportunities while maximizing fun and safety. Many activities are family-friendly and some programs cater to women only.

Authorized users All DoD ID card holders and sponsored guests.

Age restrictions Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. See the de-tailed activity description for individual activity restrictions.

How to register Register in person at the Outdoor Rec-reation Center (ORC); or use a credit/debit card over the phone. Full pay-ment is required at the time of registra-tion. Cash, Check, VISA, and Master-Card are accepted. Pre-registration is required on all activities. The ORC is open Thursday– Monday from 8am-6pm. Call the ORC at 873-4058 or stop by building 627. Cancellation policy Full refunds will be given with four days notice, unless otherwise stated for each activity. No refunds will be given within 3 days of the activity or for no-shows. Required safety training Adventure trips that include the use of Outdoor Recreational Vehicles (ORVs) including snowmachines, require prior safety training. ORV safety training is available for $10/person. Additional information can be found on page 6.

Fishing/hunting/trapping license Participants in adventure trips that in-clude hunting or fishing are required to have a valid Alaskan fishing/hunting/trapping license prior to departure.

Changes to trip details Trip location and specifics are subject to change due to weather conditions or other factors at the discretion of the program staff.

Outdoor activity descriptions Cross-Country Ski Lesson Try your hand at cross-country skiing this winter! Basic introductory lesson includes ski rental. Meet at Outdoor Rec. at lesson start time (see dates). Ages 8 and up. Children 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult. $20 for adults. $10 for kids. Lesson will last approx. 1.5 hrs. Cancelled if -10 or below. (Mar. 6, 19: 10 am)

Volkmar Lake Snowmachine/Ice Fishing Adventure Approximately 60 mile round trip from Quartz Lake to Volkmar Lake on one of the most enjoyable and memorable Interior rides you will ever take. A GREAT river and trail-riding day trip. Meet at Outdoor Rec. and follow to Quartz Lake. We provide the bait, poles, snowmachine and helmet. Cold weather gear required (balaclavas, stout gloves, correct footwear, and good layer-ing). Bring water and snacks and lunch. Depart Quartz at 8 am, return by 5 pm. Sign up at least 3 days in advance. $100 military, $125 civilian. (Mar. 6, 20, 27)

Chena Hot Springs Day Trip/Skiing Enjoy a day of skiing and soaking at Chena Hot Springs Resort and let us do the driving for you! Cross-country ski guide will be provided. Bring your own skis or rent them from Outdoor Rec. If you don’t want to ski, that’s fine too! Tour the geothermal plant or the ice museum. Other resort activities are available. We will depart from Gabriel Auditorium parking lot at 7 am and will return by 9 pm. Pool pass included in price. Bring your own lunch or enjoy lunch at the resort restaurant or café. Min. 3, max. 5. Ages 18 and over. Sign up/fees due one week in advance. Cost: $55/person. (Mar. 5, Apr. 16)

Maclaren River Lodge Snowmachine Adventure

Enjoy an overnight snowmachine adventure at the Maclaren River Lodge! Bring plenty of warm clothing and a camera. This ad-venture trip is available for ages 18 and up. Cost will be $150 per person; reserva-tions for lodging must be made and paid by the customer by calling MRL at 907.822.5444. Depart the Outdoor Rec-reation Center at 9am Saturday morning; Return 8pm Sunday. (Mar. 12/13)

Snowmachine Trail Ride Enjoy a snowmachine ride right out your back door! Experience fun trail riding on local trails through the surrounding wilder-ness. Trails lead to a wall tent on a ridge with spectacular views of the mountains. This is where we stop for a warm up by the wood stove and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa before heading out to hit the trails some more. Good for beginner to interme-diate riders who have passed the snow-machine safety class. Fee includes rental of snowmachine. Guide provided. Warm

winter riding gear required. Meet at Out-door Rec. at 1 pm, return by 3:30 pm. Cost: $45/person. Sign up at least 3 days in advance. Cancelled if -15 or colder. Min. 2, max. 4. (Mar. 6, 19, 26, Apr. 10)

Latrines on Ice Have a blast racing your team’s outhouse at Firetower Hill Rd. NorthHaven will be providing hot dogs for lunch to help keep the energy up! Rules, outhouse blueprints and more information are available at ODR and the Wood Shop, 873-3140 is standing by to help guide you along building your outhouse. Creativity is highly encouraged. 1100-1200. (Mar. 26)

Spring Break Adventure Day Camp Tues. 3/15, K-5 : 8:30 – 11:30

Butterflies in the garden: Lesson on butter-flies (w/live butterflies!) and students will start some plants to take home. Intro to weather: Classroom lesson. Make weather records book. Make weather in-struments and put them out in field in spe-cific locations.

Tues. 3/15, 6-12: 12:30 – 3:00

Map and Compass: Classroom lesson, then treasure hunt with compass. Intro to weather: Classroom lesson. Make

Field trip to Fairbanks for Tubing at Birch Hill. All students will record weather condi-tions in weather book. Lunch. Visit Morris Thomson Visitor’s Center for film and ranger led walk-about.

Art in Nature: Introduction to Andy Golds-worthy art- watch DVD. (This is art built in nature using available materials.) Outside session- each child will build their “art” and we will take a picture of all and print out picture for them to take home. Owls of Alaska (indoor classroom), dissect owl pellets. Check weather outside and record in books.

Thurs. 3/17, 6-12: 12:30 – 3:00

Art in Nature: Introduction to Andy Golds-worthy art- watch DVD. (This is art or sculp-tures built in nature using available materi-als; snow, ice, rock, twigs, leaves, etc. It is intended to disintegrate over time.) Outside session- each student will build their “art” and we will take a picture of each student’s creation and print out picture for them to take home. Animals in Winter- only the strong survive. The students will be given an “animal” that they will have to take care of and keep “alive”. Can their animal survive the harsh winter environment for even 1 hour? Stu-dents will learn about animal adaptations specific to animals of Alaska.

Field trip to Fairbanks: World Ice Art Championships- explore the ice park and slides. Students will have to use compass to locate the big ice slides. Students will re-cord weather conditions in their weather books. Lunch. Sign-up and info. at Youth Services, Bldg 653. 873-3406. $50/student

Alaskan Predator Calling Join the Outdoor Recreation Center (ORC) on an adventure to the Tanana River Basin for predator calling. Predators include: Wolf, Red Fox, Lynx, and Coyotes. Warm clothing is a must; camouflage is recom-mended. Bring lunch, and a thermos of something warm to drink. This trip will de-part the ORC at 9am. All participants must have an Alaskan small game or a trapping license. Cost is $75. (Mar. 18, & Apr. 1, 22)

Tanana White Fish Spearing Join us for a spearing adventure. We will depart from ODR at 1900 and return at 2300. Don’t forget your waders and flash-light, we will provide the spears. $25. Fish-ing license required. Call Outdoor Rec. for more details. (Apr. 8, 20, 25)

Paxson Lake Ice Fishing/Snowmachine Outdoor Rec. will provide transportation 90 mi. to Denali Highway. Snowmachine to Paxson Lake for ice fishing. Fishing poles, auger, and snowmachines provided. Dress

appropriately and bring lunch and a ther-mos. Depart Outdoor Rec. at 0800 and return at 1800. Cost is $75. Minimum 3. (April 2, 24)

Rainbow Lake Ice Fishing This trip includes a 20 mile round-trip snowmachine ride as well as fishing for Rainbow Trout. We’ll provide poles, bait, snowmachine and a helmet. Participants are required to wear warm clothing as well as pack a lunch and bring your fishing license. Meet at ODR at 0800 and return at 1800. $75. Cancelled if –20 or colder. Must sign up/pay fees 2 days in advance. (Apr. 16)

Outdoor Skills Class - Build a Pulk Sled If you like to ski or snowshoe in the winter and are tired of carrying your gear on your back, this is the class for you. You will build and take home a pulk sled that can be used all winter long for your camping and recreational expeditions. All materials included. Meet at Outdoor Rec. at 5 pm. Ages 16 and up. Cost: $75. Sign up/fees due by March 4. Class will be 1-1.5 hrs. long. Min. 2, max. 6. Please indicate belt size in registration; small, medium, or large. (Mar. 7)

Baking with Sourdough Learn how make bread, english muffins, pretzels and more with sourdough. Samples provided and you will take home sour-dough starter. Cost: $15. Class will be held at the YS kitchen 10 am- 12 pm. Sign up by Feb. 2. Min. 3, max. 8. (Apr. 9)

Avalanche Awareness & Snowmachine Safety Class In this course, you will learn snowmobile safety, avalanche awareness, and safe riding etiquette and technique ($25). The morning will feature an interactive class-room session followed by an afternoon ride on snow machines. This will give atten-

dees of the morning presentation an op-portunity to practice the skills learned in class. Snow machines for the afternoon circuit ride and trans-ceiver demonstration will be available from ODR for an addi-tional $15. 0800 - 1600. Younger partici-pants ages 10 and up are invited to at-tend, but must have their own appropri-ately-sized machine, or ride as a passen-ger on a 2-up sled. George Lake Ice Fishing Ice fish for Northern Pike and Burbot at George Lake! The Outdoor Recreation Center (ORC) will provide transportation 40 mi. to the Tanana River. Snowmachines will then be used to access George Lake (approx. 12 miles round trip). Limits: 5 Burbot; 5 Pike (only one of which may be 30 in or longer). Dress warm and bring a lunch. Depart the ORC at 8 am and return at 6pm. Cost of this adventure trip is $75. (Mar. 19) *Please note- This trip is de-pendant on river ice conditions.

Ladies Only Snowmachine Trail Ride This “Ladies Only” ride will boost your con-fidence on a snowmachine while providing an opportunity to experience the wilder-ness at your back door! Great for beginner to intermediate riders, we will make a pit stop at a wall tent to warm up and enjoy hot cocoa along the way. Guide provided. Warm winter gear required. Must have passed the snowmachine safety class to sign up. Meet at Outdoor Rec. at 1 pm. Return by 3:30 pm. Cost: $45/person. Snowmachine rental included in price. Sign up at least 3 days in advance. Cancelled if -15 or colder. Min. 2, max. 4. (Apr. 9)

Snowmachine Training Classes Classes take place at ODR on Sundays at 0900 and 1300 and usually take 2-3 hours to complete. Participants must be an au-thorized user and at least 16 years old with a driver’s license. Gloves, goggles or sun glasses, balaclavas, winter boots, win-ter jacket, and ski/winter pants are needed for the ride. FMWR provides helmet with face shield. Class includes safety video, machine introduction, and short circuit ride. $10 per/person. Sign up at Outdoor Rec. (Mar. 6,13 - plus special Sat. class on March 12 at 0900)

Mark Your Calendars! Outdoor Recreation Vehicle (ORV) Safety Training: ATV’s & Snowmachines

The Outdoor Recreation Center offers instructional snowmachine and ATV safety and training courses year round. The safety

training is mandatory for all ORV rentals and to operate on USARAK land. Snowmachine training will be available on March 6 & 12 at 1300. Cost is $10/person. ATV training will be available on April 21 & 28 at 1730. Cost is $15/person. A maximum of 8 participants can attend each course. Call the Outdoor Recreation Center to schedule your training. 873-4058

Outdoor recreation for all of your life

North Twin Lake North Twin Lake is located in Don-nelly Training Area; about 13mi Southwest of Fort Greely. Species include Rainbow Trout and Lake Trout.

Ice-House Rental Information The Ice-houses are available for rent with and without equipment (Fishing poles, folding chairs, Ice-auger). With equipment, the rental fee is $30 for Military; $40 for Civilians. Without equipment, the rental fee is $15 for Military; $20 for Civilians. For more information please contact the Outdoor Recreation Center. In addition to your current Alaska sport fishing license, you must obtain a Recrea-tion Access Permit (RAP) before fishing. You can get your free RAP card at the Fort Greely front gate Visitor’s Center. Permits are also available at the Natural Resources office in the hangar at Allen Army Airfield (873-1614 or 873-1615). You must have the RAP card in your possession while on Training Lands.

Bolio Lake Bolio Lake is located in Donnelly Training Area; about 8mi Southwest of Fort Greely. Species include Rainbow Trout and Arctic Grayling.

Firetower Sled/Ski Hill Firetower Hill offers something for all ages; a great place for sled-ding and brushing up on your cross-country/downhill skills before hit-ting the slope. A tow rope is in operation on Saturdays from 11am to 4 pm. Closed if –20 or colder. Sleds, Snowboards, cross-country skis, and downhill skis are avail-able for rent at the Outdoor Rec-reation Center.

Winter activities to energize you

~First Annual Northern Pike Contest~ Take a trip with FMWR and register your catch to be

eligible for prizes! Contest open to pike taken from George and Volkmar Lakes on a

scheduled FMWR outing. Length of fish will be measured and recorded by ODR guide staff. Contest runs through March 31.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes will be awarded. Details to be announced.

Firestarting Tips

How to use a magnesium stick: Shave some magnesium from the stick with a knife onto flammable tinder. (Try a real cot-ton ball or fine birch bark paper.) Now turn the stick over and strike the flint to produce a spark. Aim your sparks directly on tinder. Have dry material ready to feed the fire as soon as you have flame.

Magnesium sticks are available at most sporting goods departments/stores for

around $5-$7. Works when wet!
