It was an imaginative story of what happens when a person invites Jesus Christ into their life and heart. When I was a graduate student in Pasadena, Califor- nia, I was privileged to have the author of that booklet, Dr. Robert Boyd Munger, as a professor. I have shared that booklet with many people over the years, and I would like to share a little of it with you. Dr. Munger wrote: In his letter to the Ephesians, the apostle Paul writes: That [God] may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.(Eph. 3:16-17, NIV) Or, as another has translated it, That Christ may settle down and be at home in your hearts by faith(Weymouth). Without question one of the most remarkable Christian doctrines is that Jesus Christ Himself through the Holy Spirit will actually enter a heart, settle down and be at home there. “WHERE IS MY HEART?”

When I was in college, I had the opportunity to read a little

booklet, My Heart, Christ’s Home. It was an imaginative

story of what happens when a person invites Jesus Christ

into their life and heart. When I was a graduate student in Pasadena, Califor-

nia, I was privileged to have the author of that booklet, Dr. Robert Boyd

Munger, as a professor. I have shared that booklet with many people over the

years, and I would like to share a little of it with you.

Dr. Munger wrote: In his letter to the Ephesians, the apostle Paul writes:

“That [God] may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your

inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through

faith.” (Eph. 3:16-17, NIV) Or, as another has translated it, “That Christ

may settle down and be at home in your hearts by faith” (Weymouth).

Without question one of the most remarkable Christian doctrines is that Jesus

Christ Himself through the Holy Spirit will actually enter a heart, settle down

and be at home there.

Christ will live in any human heart that welcomes Him. I will never forget

the evening I invited Christ into my heart. What an entrance He made! It

was not a spectacular, emotional thing, but very real, occurring at the very

center of my soul. He came into the darkness of my heart and turned on the

light. He built a fire in the cold hearth and banished the chill. He started mu-

sic where there had been discord. He filled the emptiness with His own lov-

ing fellowship. I have never regretted opening the door to Christ and I never

will.

This, of course, is the first step in making the heart Christ’s home. He has

said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears my voice

and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with

me.” (Revelation 3:20)

Sue’s News

I am writing this after Resurrection so forgive

me if I have any typos or crazy mistakes. It

takes a few day to get over the high of being

with our group of 30 people and thousands of

other youth and chaperones from Holston Con-

ference and beyond for the weekend. It is so

much fun to be a part of this experience. I have

been a leader and now I am go as a helper. It

makes me realize I am getting older because it

takes me longer to recover from the weekend.

Last night I had 2 long naps BEFORE I went to

bed and then I didn’t want to roll out of bed this

morning. Those of you who have been to Resur-

rection know what I mean. Everyone needs to

experience Resurrection!

We have lots of exciting things coming up over

the next few months. Make sure that you look at

the information on the District Training event

that will take place on Sunday February 10 at

Keith Memorial UMC in Athens. There are sev-

eral training classes and we need representatives

in all the classes. I think it will be a very in-

formative afternoon. Let’s take a crowd!

I hope everyone is excited about our upcoming

“Lord, Teach Us to Pray” seminar coming up on

March 8-10. Registration will start the first part

of February. Read the information in the news-

letter and bulletins, pray for the weekend, and

plan to attend. Barbara Pennington is the chair-

person of our Prayer Ministry Team and she,

along with her team, are putting this weekend

together. She can give you more information

and she can let you know how you can help. It

is going to be a great weekend for our church

family!

Please read the rest of the newsletter and keep it

handy so you can keep up with what is going on

through the month of February. There are lots

of things going on, and we want you to be a part

of the happenings!

Lord, Teach Us to Pray

Renewal Weekend

March 8—10, 2019

Lord Teach Us To Pray is an event designed to

encourage God’s people to become people of pray-

er and encourages individuals to take another step

toward maturity in prayer. The weekend will be

lead by a team from Aldersgate Renewal Minis-

tries.

Our event will begin on Friday evening at 5:45 PM

with a covered dish supper. Everyone is invited to

bring a covered dish to share.

The team members will lead and share testimony

followed by a small group experience designed to

challenge participants to think of prayer as a jour-

ney. The curriculum will also cover the Prayer

Life of Jesus. The evening will include a praise

service. There will be activities for children and

youth.

Saturday’s events will begin at 9:00 AM and in-

clude a praise service and team led sessions on

Why did Jesus Pray?, emphasis on meditation and

reflection, and a team led skit.

Lunch provided in our fellowship hall

Saturday Afternoon 1:15 PM - A very practical

portion of the afternoon sessions will be TOOLS

FOR PERSONAL PRAYER: PRAYING FOR

OTHERS, LISTENING, PRAYING HYMNS, JOUR-

NALING, & DAILY QUIET TIME. There will be

youth and children’s activities.

Supper provided in our fellowship hall

The evening will end Saturday at 9:00 with a com-

missioning of participants and team ministry.

Childcare will be provided for both days.

A $15 fee for one or $25 for two will cover

manual(s) & Saturday meals.

Excellence in Evangelism

One of the reports that we as a church have to turn in to our District Office at the end of each year and according to our work we receive, or not, a certifi-cate is for Excellence in Evangelism. We do not do these things to receive this recognition, but to measure our growth so that we know where we are in fulfilling our mission to “make disciples of Je-sus Christ.”

The things we have to report are:

Have we received members this year by pro-fession of faith?

Did our membership grow?

Has our average attendance at morning wor-ship grown?

Do we have small groups and have we added new ones?

Did we baptize anyone?

Was a Confirmation Class held?

Did we start at least one new Sunday School Class?

Do we have an active Lay Visitation Program?

Was at least one Renewal Event held?

Was at least one in-depth Discipleship Pro-gram held?

Did the church engage in ministry with the poor or marginalized in our community?

Think about the things you have done this year that would fit into one or more of these categories. Think about the things from this list that you would like to be involved in. If we are not already doing the things that are on your list, would you take the lead or assist someone else with those pro-jects?

If you feel called to work on some of these issues please contact Pastor Keith, Sue Hamilton—Program Director, or me, your Administrative As-sistant. We can get the materials that you need to put these programs into action.

When I filled out the report for 2018 I was sad be-cause we only accomplished 5 of these goals. I know we can do better; we have in the past.

Calling all Young and Mid-Life Adults!!

as young as you feel!

Sunday February 24th, following the service, come join me in the fellowship hall. This will be a fun luncheon and a time for planning upcoming events. This is your group. This is your time. Let’s see what inspires you.

The Young and Mid-Life Adult group is a big “gap” we have as a church. We are all so busy with school, work, kids, outside activities and even other church activities that we forget about our-selves. This is an opportunity for us to take a break from all of that and have a little fun and fel-lowship. This is an opportunity for us to “grow” the church by having a group for our graduating seniors to join. This is a chance for us to “open the door” and involve the students from Hiwassee College. I would encourage everyone to come to this luncheon planning session with thoughts and ideas of what you would like this group to encom-pass.

Prayer Ministry Team

The Prayer Ministry Team met on

Jan 17 with five members and Pastor Keith

present.

The Renewal weekend on March 8 - 10 was

the topic of discussion. Planning meals, lodg-

ing, youth and children’s actives and daycare

are being coordinated. I appreciate the work

of the team, Sue and Pastor Keith. Registra-

tion will begin Sunday Feb 3, with Marlee

Tierce and Phyllis Harrell in charge.

PLEASE BE IN PRAYER FOR THIS SPE-

CIAL WEEKEND MARCH 8 - 10.

The next meetings will be Feb 7 AND Feb 21

at 6 o’clock.
