DAVID’S ECHO—A book entitled “David’s Echo - uplift-ing the Human Spirit” was recently written by Elly (Kriss) Walkowiak and Rev. Aaron J. Kriss, siblings of Rev. David J. Kriss, in his memory and as a tribute to him. Fr. Kriss (1953-2004) was a parochial vicar at St. Pius X Brookline from 1984-1991. This keepsake is based on an interview he gave while in ministry at St. Pius X and contains a poem dedicated to him, photographs and excerpts from several private sources. It reveals how he found inspiration, shows how interacting with community from a spiritual and hu-manistic perspective made a difference in their lives and his, and explores how essential human connection is. To learn more or to obtain this book email Fr. Aaron Kriss at [email protected] or contact him at Guardian Angels Parish at 724-226-4900 ext. 20.

January 16-17 is the special collection to benefit the students of St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech. St. Anthony’s and DePaul both fill a nec-essary role for special education within the Diocese of Pitts-burgh. St. Anthony School Programs offers an inclusive educa-tion to children ages 5-21 years with special needs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech teaches children, birth to 14 years, who are deaf or hard of hearing to listen, speak, and learn. Both programs empower students to become active and contributing members of their respective communities. Any help you can give is deeply appreciated and makes a tremen-dous impact on the students we serve, as well as their families. Our fundraising efforts have been greatly impacted by the pan-demic, so again, any support you are able to give means so much. Thank you for your time and God bless.

THE WATERS OF BAPTISM When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jor-dan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come be-fore him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove him-self into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the bap-tism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sin-ful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News.
