A BRIGHT IDEA: CHECK YOUR VEHICLE’S LIGHTS AND WIPERS

As the days get shorter, it’s a bright idea to make sure your vehicle’s lights and wipers are working properly so you can be seen by others and your visibility is not compromised, advises the Car Care Council. “Lights and wipers play a critical role in safe driving, as the chance of an accident increases if you can’t see or be seen,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “From the driver’s seat you may not notice a light that isn’t working, so inspect all of your car’s lights and replace those that are out. Also, inspect and replace wiper blades so you can see clearly when wet weather hits.” Lights are normal wear items that require periodic inspection and replacement. The lighting system provides nighttime visibility; signals and alerts other drivers; and supplies light for viewing instruments and the vehicle’s interior. In addition to replacing dimming, rapidly blinking and non-functioning lights, the following tips can help keep you safe:

•Keep headlights, tail lights and signal lights clean. External dirt and debris can dim operational lights from being seen by others. •Make sure that your headlights are properly aimed. Misaimed headlights blind other drivers and reduce your ability to see the road. •Don’t overdrive your headlights; you should be able to stop inside the illuminated area, otherwise you are creating a blind crash area in front of your vehicle. •If there is any doubt on whether or not your headlights should be on, turn them on. Lights not only help you see better in early twilight, they also make it easier for other drivers to see you.

The wiper system keeps excessive water, snow and dirt from building up on the windshield, maintaining clear visibility. Many factors can accelerate the replacement interval of wipers, including operating conditions (winter conditions are tough on wiper blades), frequency of use, material and type of wipers and sunny weather. In fact, wiper blades can deteriorate faster and need more frequent replacement in desert states.

Q: My vet told me that my cat is a senior! She sti ll acts like a kitt en – how can that be?

September is Senior Pet Wellness Month so your questi on is very ti mely. One of the most common questi ons asked in our practi ce is, “How old is my dog or cat in human years?” Many people have learned that their pet ages approximately seven years for every one human year.

While this is a decent esti mate, there are many factors that must be taken into account relati ng to the life spans of our pets. Breed and size are two of the biggest infl uences on pet stage of life. However, nutriti on, environment, geneti cs and most of all, the degree of veterinary healthcare a pet receives throughout its life are also huge determinants.

Some pets are considered seniors at 5 years of age. These are the large-breed animals such as Great Danes and masti ff s. Others are not considered seniors unti l 9 or 10 years if they are a small dog or cat.

It is essenti al to remember that being “old” or “older” is not a disease or a diagnosis by itself. Being older is a stage in the life of a pet that brings with it the increased chance for things to wear out and for diseases to occur that may take years to develop.

Pets age similar to humans with regard to the signs and process of aging. Certain areas of their body may turn gray, especially around the muzzle. Joints become sti ff , and just getti ng up and down or simply walking uses more energy. This leads to more naps and a more sedentary lifestyle as they have to work harder to do even simple tasks. Hearing may also decrease; for example when you come home and are not greeted at the door, but rather have to touch the pet to awaken the deeply sleeping animal.

Because of their historic past, pets do not show signs of illness unti l they literally cannot hide them anymore. In the wild, as soon as weakness is perceived in a pack animal, they are isolated, abandoned or killed. So, the longer they can hide unthrift iness, the longer they are accepted by the pack.

This however complicates our ability to care for them long-term, since illnesses can be very advanced when they fi nally tell us they are sick. For a veterinarian to be able to treat and keep a pet healthy for a longer, happier life, we need to know as soon as something is becoming abnormal.

Quality life can be added to a pet’s lifeti me by making an early diagnosis. This necessitates regular wellness exams

as pets begin to enter their golden years. It is all about “quality” of life during this ti me, not just “quanti ty” of life.

Recommendati ons include having a wellness exam every six months rather than yearly when a pet enters senior citi zen status. This may include bloodwork and urinalysis, and possibly other tests as indicated. Early kidney disease, heart disease and even some cancers, if found early, can be treated successfully by using medicati on, changing the type of food or perhaps removing a small tumor before it can metastasize and be fatal.

Nutriti on is a key factor in older pets, whether simply to lower unneeded calories or to help manage an ongoing medical problem.

Exercise, as in our own lives, is essenti al for the maintenance of emoti onal, physiologic and mental health. Short walks or longer walks as tolerated are essenti al for overall health maintenance.

Remember, while getti ng older is not a disease, it predisposes pets to various diseases. Have your senior pet examined at least every six months and follow the recommendati ons of your veterinarian. Growing older together with your pet can be rewarding and fun.

Even Mrs. Claus is wearing one. The beautiful beaded bracelets, so thoughtfully put together by Delmar’s Riley Donovan, are just right for anyone. Riley created one especially for Mrs. Claus, strung with shiny red and deep green beads, alternating with delicate silver. All of her bracelets are special, “But that one I made just for her. I left it with a note for Santa.” The bracelet for Mrs. Claus was a gift. The rest of her bracelets are for sale, sold to raise money for a cause: Cure CMD. The story of Riley’s bracelets starts with Charlie. Charlie Dague is almost four years old. The Donovans and the Dagues from Albany have been friends since Charlie was a baby. After taking a few steps at 18 months, he never walked again and in February 2010, was diagnosed with Congenital Muscular Dystrophy. Charlie is Riley’s friend, though, and it doesn’t matter what he’s been diagnosed with or whether he can walk. “He’s very sweet and kinda silly,” she says,” and he likes to play with my brother’s cars.”The diagnosis motivated Charlie’s parents Stephanie

and Harris to raise money for research. They work to support Cure CMD, recently planning a fundraiser that raised over $16,000 to support the cause. This is where Riley’s story comes in.

Riley is a very artsy girl, loving to paint and make crafts. Last year, she and her mother Brooke were bored on a summer’s afternoon. They decided to make bracelets together. The fi rst few she made were given as gifts, one to a friend who was being treated for cancer, another for Charlie’s mom. The bracelet made for Mrs. Dague sparked Riley’s imagination. “It made me think of Charlie. So, I asked my Mommy if we could make bracelets and sell them to help Charlie.” Her mother adds, “Riley has always had a benevolence about her. It amazes us. She’s always wants to help people.”Before the bracelets, she asked her parents if she could help with the local food pantry. Riley knew the food there went to hungry people in her own community. So she helped, volunteering and helping in whatever way she could. Helping in the food pantry made her feel good. about the things she cares about, from her two brothers to gymnastics and piano lessons, even the bright pink cast she was sporting on a fractured wrist. This fall she will be in second grade at Slingerlands Elementary. Riley talked about making the bracelets, something this artistic girl loves to do. She pulled out her bead box to show off her beads. There are small and large beads, the wire she strings them on and a board made for laying out her designs. Her mother helps with each one, tying the ends tightly so they are secure. “I love picking out the beads and putting them together for each bracelet,” she says, “I even asked my mom if once a year we could make one for ourselves.”Her mother laughs at this and it’s plain to see that creating and giving is something that comes easily around the Donovan family. It is done with simple and honest joy. What was originally done on a whim is now a big-time operation for Riley. She has her own Facebook page and has sent bracelets all over the country. At the Cure CMD fundraiser, she raised over $1500 selling her bracelets. Each bracelet costs $20, and Riley donates every cent to Cure CMD. The organization is a non-profi t, devoted to research and treatment of Congenital Muscular Dystrophy. Recently, doctors took samples of Charlie’s stem cells to use in research. The money raised by Riley goes directly to help fund this type of study. In July, Riley was chosen as News 9/YNN’s “Kid of the Week”, and was awarded a gift basket fi lled with

While the calendar year begins in January, I often think of September as the real beginning of the year. We go back to school, turn from summer leisure to fall busyness, and make many other transitions. Lots of things are happening in Town Hall in September, including work on our budget, but also in many other areas.

The budget is appropriately consuming much attention. Last month our Comptroller provided an updated fi nancial projection for 2012, showing that the Town will save approximately $1 million compared to the originally enacted budget. This is largely due to vacancy controls bringing our workforce numbers down, but also to the mild winter, improving sales tax collections and other factors. It’s good news, certainly, but even with an improved fund balance for 2012, we still have very far to go to arrive at a sustainable budget for 2013 and beyond.Because of the seriousness of our budget gap ($3.5 million), we have to look at a lot of changes. Keep in mind, however, that many of the early suggestions for savings will not make it into the budget and other ideas are also emerging. For example, I will not propose eliminating fall leaf pickup and I also want to keep the transfer station open. We’ll be looking at cutbacks in many areas, however, and I hope that we continue to receive a lot of citizen input. The budget process will continue through the fall, with my proposal to be presented September 24 and Board action in early November. There are board meetings, workshops and other ways to participate in this process, and we have a new 2013 budget page on the town website to provide comprehensive up-to-date information as we move forward.

But beyond the budget, there are many other activities starting up this fall. For example, we have just begun meetings of the Comprehensive Plan Assessment Committee – a group composed of citizens and town offi cers that is taking a broad look at land use planning and development, including summarizing the development patterns we’ve seen in recent years.We’ll also be making appointments to the new town Ethics Board, part of our revamped Ethics Code that brings Bethlehem to the forefront of statewide reform.Fall is also the election season, which often brings with it a profusion of political “lawn” signs. This year the rules have been clarifi ed under a local law passed last spring. These rules had been a source of confusion and controversy for years, and the new law was carefully drafted to be consistent with constitutional concerns as well as state and county road guidelines, and is dramatically reducing the clutter of political signs along roadsides. “Lawn” signs can no longer be indiscriminately posted all over our roadways, they have to be on private, non-commercial property – i.e., lawns. This is helping to keep Bethlehem beautiful during the election season.This year there is a primary election on Thursday September 13th (noon to 9PM). The election is on Thursday rather than Tuesday, which is the usual day but would have confl icted with 9/11 commemorations this year. Please be aware that several polling places have changed in Bethlehem – you can get voter information from the county board of elections (518) 487-5060.

Do I Really Need a Flu Shot? What is the Flu? The fl u is a common respiratory illness that is caused by the infl uenza virus. The fl u season usually starts in October and goes until May peaking in the winter months. It is estimated that 5%-20% of the US population gets the fl u every year causing more than 200,000 hospitalizations and about 36,000 deaths. People who are risk to get more severe illness are those older than 65 years or those who have a medical condition such as: diabetes, heart disease, asthma, kidney disease, or pregnant women. Children younger than 5 years of age are also at higher risk.

What are the Symptoms of the Flu?The symptoms of the fl u are more severe than the common cold. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, tiredness, runny or stuffy nose, chills, or body aches. Some people get vomiting and/or diarrhea. Not all patients get all these signs at the same time and it varies for each person.

How is the fl u virus spread?When someone who has the fl u coughs, sneezes or talks, droplets can be released and land in the mouths or noses of people nearby. People may also catch the fl u by touching their mouth or nose after touching something with the virus on it, such as doorknobs, tables, or an infected person’s dirty hand. What Can I do to protect myself and my family from the fl u and its complications?There are 3 important steps for prevention:1) Get Vaccinated. This is the single most important thing to do for protection. The seasonal fl u vaccine can be provided either by injection or a nasal spray. The seasonal fl u virus changes each year so it is important to get vaccinated every year. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months and older receive the vaccination. 2) Take Preventive Steps: Flu virus is easy spread, so prevention is the key. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Wash your hands with

soap and water or use an alcohol based hand sanitizing rub. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth to help prevent the spread of germs. Try to avoid close contact with those who are infected. And If you are sick, stay home for at least a day. 3) Take an Antiviral Medication If Your Doctor Prescribes It: There are antiviral prescription medications available. If

taken in the fi rst 48 hours of symptoms, these medications can help reduce the severity or duration of the symptoms. However, not all patients with the fl u need these medications.

Where Can I Get Vaccinated?The fl u vaccine is available and fl u shot clinics are now in full swing. Contact your doctor, pharmacist or your local health department to fi nd out where to go. .

What vaccines are available/?There are two types of vaccines, the fl u shot and the nasal spray. Both cause the body to produce antibodies to fi ght the fl u. The fl u shot provides inactivated (killed) fl u virus by injection. It is approved for people older than 6 months. The nasal spray is a mist given in your nose that provides weakened live fl u virus. It is approved for healthy people 2 to 49. The spray is not approved for use in pregnant women.

Are the fl u vaccines safe?The CDC closely monitors the safety of vaccinations. As the vaccinations are designed to stimulate the immune system, they do not give someone the fl u. The fl u shot contains inactivated (killed) fl u viruses that cannot cause illness. The nasal spray contains weakened live viruses which cause infection in the cooler temperatures found in the nose. Some patients do experience mild symptoms such as headache, nausea, muscle aches, soreness at the injection site (injection), or runny nose (nasal spray) shortly after the vaccination and last 1 to 2 days.

Who should NOT get the vaccine?Patient who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs, a history of a severe reaction to a fl u vaccination, moderate-to-severe illness with a fever (wait until you are better to get the vaccine) or Guillain–Barré Syndrome should talk with their doctors about immunization.

Raise Your “Awareness” of Benefi ts of Life Insurance You may be unaware of it, but September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. And when you consider the lifetime of benefi ts you and your family may receive from life insurance, you might agree that a month isn’t too long to spend on this important part of your overall fi nancial picture.

Unfortunately, too many Americans are uninsured or under-insured. In fact, nearly a third of all consumers think they need more life insurance, according to the 2012 Insurance Barometer Study, published by the nonprofi t LIFE Foundation and LIMRA, a research and consulting organization that specializes in insurance and fi nancial services. And it appears that one of the main reasons so many people lack suffi cient life insurance is their perception that they can’t afford it. Yet, the cost for basic term life insurance has fallen by about 50 percent over the past 10 years, according to the LIFE Foundation.

The cost — fi nancial, emotional and psychological — of not having adequate life insurance certainly outweighs the expense of carrying the proper coverage. You’ll hear about many things that are designed to “last a lifetime,” but in the case of life insurance, that expression is appropriate. Consider the various times in which you should look at the need for life insurance:

When you’re married — Many married couples assume they won’t need life insurance until they have children. But if you or your spouse died, would the surviving spouse’s income be suffi cient to pay off the mortgage, or even the rent? How about credit card balances, car loans or student loans?

When you’re married…with young kids — Now, in addition to having to pay off the mortgage if anything should happen to you, your surviving spouse will have to fi nd the money to educate your children — and that’s a big challenge, given the rapidly escalating expenses associated with college. But with suffi cient life insurance in place, your spouse can deal with the high costs of higher education. Furthermore, if you have permanent life insurance, such as whole life or universal life, you have the potential to build cash value, which you may be able to tap to help pay for college — while you’re still alive. (Keep in mind, though, that using some of your cash value could lower your policy’s death benefi t.)When your children are grown — Even with your children grown and gone, you can benefi t from life insurance. For example, if your spouse outlives you by a decade or more, will he or she have enough money to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle?When you’re retired — Your need for life insurance doesn’t retire when you do. For one thing, you may be able to access the cash value of your permanent insurance to help meet your retirement expenses. (Keep in mind this may affect your death benefi t.) And your policy’s death benefi t could help your children or other heirs deal with estate taxes, if any exist. Furthermore, if you’d like to be able to pass on something to your children or grandchildren, life insurance may be an ideal vehicle, because the proceeds are typically income tax free and can avoid the time-consuming process of probate.

Life Insurance Awareness Month only lasts 30 days — but, as we’ve seen, life insurance can offer a lifetime of benefi ts. So make sure you get the coverage you need.

With its distinctive mansard roof, this building is a Four Corners landmark. It was built by Esley Winne and is shown in an old postcard from its days as the Delmar Post Offi ce. Many will remember Earl C. Adams had his hardware store here. Today the building houses I Love Books. Also glimpsed through the trees to the right is the parsonage of the Delmar Reformed Church. It was built in 1851 and removed in 1935 to make way for the current parsonage. This photo is one of many featured in town historian Susan Leath’s book Bethlehem, on sale now. Happiness! Is your mind playing tricks on you and robbing you of your happiness? Our minds are complex, and often our own worst enemies when it comes to being happy. Recognizing and debunking the myths

below are essential to realizing a lasting happiness, creating stronger relationships, and succeeding in your career.

• I’d be happier if I just had less to do. Our minds often try to trick us into thinking we’d be happier if we didn’t have to work. We imagine a life of leisure and deceive ourselves into thinking this kind of lifestyle would make us happy. However, the truth is that idleness often leads to boredom and depression. We are industrious, creative beings. We need challenge and accomplishment to be happy. Get up and invest yourself into something signifi cant and you will fi nd that your happiness factor will rise!

• It’s not me, it’s you. Our minds lead us to believe we are unhappy due to our spouse, parents, or some other person in our lives. We throw blame, but it takes two to tango. Generally, we are as much, if not more, to blame than others in our lives. We need to accept responsibility for our situation and do our part to make the best of it. Taking personal responsibility for our actions is the beginning of true happiness.

• If I just had… Our minds deceive us into thinking we’ll be happy when we get the right job or the right house or the right car or whatever. There is nothing wrong with wanting better things or circumstances, but these do not automatically make us happy. They may create a temporary high, but this quickly wears off. Those wanting a lasting happiness must acknowledge that this is a bottomless pit that we can never fi ll.

• I like things just the way they are and never want them to change. Believing this is just letting yourself be set up for a fall. Life is a journey of constant change, some of which we control and some we don’t. Resisting change or trying to control the change is self-defeating. Being adaptable is very important to your happiness.

• I’ll wait until I’m really ready. Over-thinking every decision will leave you stymied. Weighing the risks, analyzing the possibilities and making a plan are important, but nothing ever happens until a decision is made and action is taken. We very rarely have perfect

information when making choices. Stop sweating it so much! Don’t let your mind trap you into over-analyzing everything!

• I know I shouldn’t, but… Our minds try to trick us into denying the effects of our bad habits and rationalizing our behavior with fl imsy excuses. For example, “I know I shouldn’t smoke, but it helps me keep the weight off.” Or, “I know I shouldn’t eat this, but life just isn’t worth living if I can’t enjoy it.” A major health issue like cancer, heart disease, or diabetes will certainly challenge your happiness. Don’t let your mind get away with this trick!

• I could never… Our brains often trick us into thinking we can’t. “I could never go back to school. I don’t have the money.” Or, “I can’t learn to do that. I’m too old.” Don’t fall for this trick! Your brain will lead you around like a dog on a leash if you let it. You are full of potential, and although your circumstances might add a degree of diffi culty, it is nothing that a little persistence and ingenuity can’t overcome. Henry Ford said, “Whether you think that you can, or that you can’t, you are usually right.”

Dear fellow readers… September is here, following one of the hottest summers in memory. The time spent at the Town Park was in the pool not reading poolside due to the excessive heat. I sought out the shade of my backyard, the AC of my house, the couch in the store with Seamus by my side, and on the deck overlooking my favorite lake in Maine for my reading venues. My bag of books for my vacation this year contained more non-fi ction than usual. I brought along customer recommendations and some authors that were new to me. My husband, Seamus and I listened to a J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) book on CD (Glory in Death) in the car on our trip up to Maine. (Slick murder mysteries in a futuristic setting.)When choosing which books for my vacation read, I select a genre mix. I usually bring about a dozen with me implementing my summer reading rule of thumb. If the book doesn‛t grab me by the fi rst 30 pages, I move on. So I usually bring some of the lengthier books that take more focus such as “Unbroken” by Lauren Hillenbrand and “In the Garden of the Beasts” by Erik Larson; as well as mysteries by Lisa Gardner, Michael Connelly, James Patterson, and Carl Hiaasen, Book 3 of Game of Thrones, as well as a mix of dystopian fi ction and urban fantasy. I also packed my canning cookbook & a low carb cookbook. My husband always brings a mix of Civil War books and Bill Bryson‛s “A Walk in the Woods”. With no TV…snowy radio reception…cool mornings, lazy afternoons and wood fi re nights, it is the perfect setting for great reading! The scenery is so beautiful though that sometimes one just sits and looks out over the lake. During the day the loons fi sh just feet from the dock, the eagle may soar down the lake, mama duck swims by with her ducklings every night at 5pm and the huge black cormorant suns himself on the diving fl oat while chipmunks skitter about trying to stuff as much bird seed into their cheeks as possible. The hummingbirds dart about the feeder and dragonfl ies fl oat overhead until sunset. The western sky fi lls with shades of gold, orange, fuschia and lilac as the bats circle overhead and through the tree tops and down over the lake. Sebec Lake, my own personal retreat, reveals new experiences, sounds, tastes and pleasures daily. Reading has become a big part of that lake experience as much as hiking, swimming, baking, and daytrips. I hope that your

summer reading has been as enjoyable.September is a time of new beginnings with the opening of school. School time is often “crunch time” for many. New commitments, scheduling, juggling of school, sports and family time often puts the squeeze on pleasure reading. Some teachers ask that students keep a journal or chart as to how many minutes they read daily. Reading just 10 minutes a day means that your child will read over 300 minutes a month…not a bad start for a second or third grader! Try to make that required reading practice enjoyable as you try to steal minutes from your busy lives. In my opinion, the body of English language instruction has changed drastically these last 15 years or so. Literacy number reports became frightening‛ so those in charge at the Department of Education and on some school boards began to evaluate and devise a “better way” to become more profi cient in English. Basal reader approach, whole language, inventive experience, theme learning…so many different methods that I am afraid have been to the detriment of our learners. First to be attacked were spelling and phonics. Word families and spelling rules should be taught. The lowest level of learning is rote memorization, but I have known some children in middle school that do not know the rules of the various spellings of long vowel sounds. Other than in elementary schools, spelling tests are all but forgotten, apparently on the premise that word processors will do the trick. (not when NYS tests are handwritten!) I cringe to think that “texting” has also had a negative impact on spelling. Vocabulary as a subject is often glossed over. Gone are the vocabulary lists of old, to be replaced with vocabulary in context, which is, not coincidentally, the way vocabulary is assessed on standardized tests. Where did the instruction of roots, prefi xes, suffi xes, and derivation go? Few teenagers know what it means to diagram a sentence. Ok, you may not see the use, but grammar and punctuation needs to be taught. I won‛t get on my “adverb soap box” but the poor adverb has been subjected to violation! Even news broadcasters use safe not safely! What will become acceptable if our authors of tomorrow don‛t know which “there” to use: their, there, or they‛re? Finally, creative writing, poetry, has been chopped clean away, to be replaced with unending persuasive essays that are the darlings of the Common Core standards. Many schools teach reading as a set of skills to be mastered rather than as a journey to be embarked upon. Children are taught how to predict, to connect, to draw inferences, and so forth, which is important, but they are rarely allowed the leisure to savor what they read or to refl ect on the art of

good writing. Having dealt with this myself as a teacher over the years, I will admit some of this is often due to the time constraints for the process. A student must have the time to read, at their speed, savor the cadence of language, explore the descriptive vocabulary rather than searching out just the facts and the answers to questions. This worries me because this year‛s “core” states that 50% of all students reading should be non-fi ction! This will start in PK! It is easier to supply books in the earlier grades on non-fi ction than in the middle grades and higher. This requirement is in addition to the non-fi ction reading that they will already be doing in Math, Science and Social Studies. I realize I am on my “educator podium”; I just wanted to inform you of the changes in reading for our students this year and to advise that the responsibility to experience fi ction may fall more to the parent. If you need help anytime during the year in fi nding a book for your student, don‛t hesitate to come in and see me. As the leaves begin to turn color, may you fi nd enjoyment between the “leaves” of a good book.
