Q: I saw something in my vet’s offi ce saying that February is Pet Dental month. Why does there have to be a special month for pet dental care?
A: Periodontal disease is the most common health care problem in pets. Did you know that up to 80% of dogs and cats develop periodontal disease by age 3? Yet less than 5% of pets get regular oral care? Here is why this is so important: blood-borne bacterial infection and other pathogens from periodontal disease are considered risk factors for heart, liver, kidney and respiratory disease, not to mention tooth loss and a painful mouth. The good news is that dental disease is easy to prevent and good oral health can increase a pet’s longevity. Comprehensive dental care – annual oral exams as part of a yearly physical by your pet’s veterinarian, treatment as needed and brushing at home is part of a wellness plan for a healthy pet for years to come. Imagine what your teeth would feel like if you didn’t brush or have dental care for three years or more. Many pet owners purchase treats, chews and toys they believe will help clean their teeth. Imagine a human who only chews gum for dental care – that is not a good oral hygiene program. The same is true for your dog and cat.
Start a dental hygiene program as early as possible with your pet. However, it is never too late to start an oral health care routine with your pet. Never use a human toothpaste or oral rinse for your dog or cat. Use only veterinary approved toothpastes or rinses. Plaque/tartar turn into calculus in 24-48 hours so daily brushing is recommended. Work brushing your pet’s teeth into part of your daily routine. Consider brushing your pet’s teeth after brushing your teeth. If frequent

brushing will not fi t into your schedule, remember, the more you can do, the better. Before you begin brushing your pet’s teeth, ask your veterinarian to show you techniques to help make brushing easier and more accepted by your pet. Just like with people, from time to time, professional dental cleaning will be needed. This requires general anesthesia. During this procedure your pet’s teeth, gums and oral cavity will be closely examined for any problems. The teeth will then be scaled and polished. If problems are noted, extractions may be necessary. Some pets need dental cleanings once a year or more often, while others may be able to go longer. Be certain to follow your vet’s recommendations.
Please send all your veterinary questions to Dr. Estra at: [email protected] or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o

Back Pain?Almost everyone can benefi t from stretching the soft tissues - the muscles, ligaments and tendons - in the back, legs, buttock, and around the spine. The spinal column and its contiguous muscles, ligaments and tendons are all designed to move, and limitations in this motion can make back pain worse.
Patients with ongoing back pain may fi nd it takes weeks or months of stretching and other back exercises to mobilize the spine and soft tissues, but will fi nd that meaningful and sustained relief of back pain will usually follow the increase in motion.
Keep the following in mind when starting a stretching routine as part of a program of back exercises:•Wear comfortable clothes that won’t bind;
•Stretching should be pain free; do not force the body into diffi cult positions; •Move into the stretch slowly and avoid bouncing, which may actually tear muscles; •Stretch on a clean, fl at surface that is large enough to move freely; •Hold stretches long enough (20-30 seconds) to allow muscles or joints to become loose; and •Repeat the stretch, generally 5 – 10 times.
PRACTICAL POINTJust 5 to 10 minutes of stretching in the morning and at night can provide
signifi cant lower back pain relief.
If one already has low back pain or neck pain, it is best to check with a physician or physical therapist to discuss whether the following neck, shoulder and lower back pain exercises should be done.
Neck and Shoulder StretchesA stiff back is sometimes accompanied by a stiff neck. The following exercises can be done to stretch the neck and shoulder area.
Flexion Stretch—Chin to ChestWhile standing or sitting, gently bend the head forward while bringing the chin toward the chest until a stretch is felt in the back of neck.
Lateral Flexion—Ear to ShoulderThis exercise stretches the neck area below the ears as well as the top of the shoulder. To begin, gently bend the neck to one side as if to touch the ear to the shoulder until a stretch is felt in the side of the neck. Switch to stretch the other side.
Back Exercise StretchesMany back pain patients know the feeling of tension in the back, especially fi rst thing in the morning. These stretching back exercises
can help bring back some suppleness and increase mobility, decreasing back pain and discomfort.
Back fl exion exerciseWhile lying on one’s back, pull both knees to the chest while simultaneously fl exing the head forward until a comfortable stretch is felt in a balled-up position.
Knee to Chest StretchWhile lying on the back with the knees bent and both heels on the fl oor, place both hands behind one knee and bring it to the chest.
Hips and Gluteus StretchesThe hips and buttocks (where the gluteus muscles are) support the lower back, and stretching these muscle groups plays a pivotal role in maintaining spine fl exibility.
Hip stretchWhile standing with feet shoulder-width apart, take a half-step back with the right foot, bend the left knee and shift weight back to the right hip. While keeping the right leg straight, bend forward more and reach down the right leg until a stretch in the outer hip is felt.
Piriformis muscle stretchThe piriformis muscle runs through the buttock and can contribute to back pain or leg pain. To stretch the this muscle, lie on the back and cross one leg over the other and gently pull the other knee toward the chest until a stretch is felt in the buttock area.
Benefi ts of Aerobic ExerciseReconditioning through aerobic exercise is very useful for both rehabilitation and maintenance of the lower back. Patients who regularly use aerobic exercise to condition the back will benefi t in several ways: •They have fewer episodes of low back pain, and will experience less pain when an episode occurs. •They are also more likely to stay functional (e.g. continue working and carry on with recreational activities), whereas those patients with chronic low back pain who do not engage in aerobic exercise are more likely to experience the gradual loss of functional capabilities. •It is easier to control weight or lose weight, decreasing the stress placed on the spine structures and joints. •An increased production of endorphins after 30 or 40 minutes of exercise can combat pain. These bio-chemicals are the body’s natural painkiller, and frequent release of them can help patients reduce their reliance on pain medication. •Endorphins can elevate mood and relieve symptoms of depression, a condition common in those with back pain or a back injury.
Types of Low Impact ExerciseThere are several types of aerobic exercise that are gentle on the back and, when done on a regular basis, highly effective in
providing conditioning.WALKING. In general, walking for exercise is very gentle on the back, and walking two to three miles three times per week is very helpful for patients. Walking also has the advantage of not requiring special equipment (except a good pair of shoes suitable for walking) and it can be done inside or outside, in almost any location, including at home on a treadmill.
STATIONARY BICYCLING. For patients who are more comfortable seated rather than standing, biking or stationary biking may be preferable. Bicycling or ‘spinning’ classes have grown in popularity over the last decade as more people realize the benefi ts of this lower impact form of exercise. There are several upright and recumbent (reclining) bikes that can be purchased for home use, and many come with programs preloaded so that patients have a good variety of sessions to choose. ELLIPTICAL TRAINER or STEP MACHINE. These machines provide a low-impact workout because the participant is using pedals suspended above the ground to move in a continuous oval motion, as opposed to continuously stepping on a hard surface. The motor on the machine facilitates a smoother step or forward glide motion, which is less jarring than walking. The benefi t of these machines is that they provide an aerobic workout as well as strengthening or resistance training because the arms of most cross-training machines can be pushed and pulled, thus working the upper body, and the resistance of the pedaling motion increased to require greater muscle exertion to maintain the movement. Whatever low-impact exercise is used, the exercise should be vigorous enough to increase the heart rate to the target zone (which is scaled to the age of the patient) and keep it elevated. Elevating the heart rate for at least 20 minutes is required to improve cardiovascular strength, burn excess calories, and make noticeable strides in fi tness.

Income Tax Preparation & Tax PlanningPersonal, Business & Trusts
Accounting & AuditingServices for Businesses & Not-For-Profi t Organizations
[email protected] Delaware Avenue, Delmar (Next to Town Hall)
Tax ti me is here again. This year you may be planning on preparing your tax return yourself or deferring the headache to a professional. Either way, here are some changes in the tax code that may impact your tax return, along with some recommendati ons.
Some changes to look out forFORM 8949In past years, capital gains or losses on many types of investments, such as stocks and mutual funds, were simply reported directly on Schedule D. For 2011, an additi onal form must be completed. Form 8949, Sales and Other Dispositi ons of Capital Assets, requires individuals to report gains and losses of capital assets in three categories for both short-term and long-term gains. The totals are then reported on Schedule D.
EXPIRED OR CHANGED TAX BENEFITS The “making work pay” credit has expired. You cannot claim it on your 2011 return. Schedule M is no longer in use.
You cannot claim the alternati ve motor vehicle credit for a vehicle you bought aft er 2010, unless the vehicle is a new fuel cell motor vehicle.
You cannot claim the fi rst-ti me homebuyer credit for 2011, unless you are a member of the uniformed services or Foreign Service or an employee of the intelligence community on qualifi ed offi cial extended duty outside the United States for at least 90 days during the period beginning aft er December 31, 2008, and ending before May 1, 2010.
The Non-business Energy Property Credit is aimed at homeowners installing energy effi cient improvements. The 2011 credit rate is now 10 percent of the cost of qualifi ed improvements. The credit has been reduced to a lifeti me limit of $500, of which only $200 may be used for windows. If the total of non-business energy property credits taken in prior years since 2005 is more than $500, the credit may not be claimed in 2011.
Other itemsDUE DATEThe due date for personal income tax return, form 1040, is April 17, 2012, instead of April 15, because April 15 is a Sunday and April 16 is the Emancipati on Day holiday in the District of Columbia.
SAME SEX MARRIAGEDuring 2011, New York State passed the Marriage Equality Act, a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in New York. When fi ling a New York State income tax return this year, a joint tax return may be advantageous. However, the IRS sti ll does not recognize same-sex marriages and a joint tax return will not be permitt ed.
Some common mistakes people make when preparing their tax return:
• Failure to take into account new tax laws. • Claiming incorrect fi ling status• Social security numbers are incorrect, missing, or don’t match the names on the return. • Using incorrect forms or omitti ng forms, schedules, and supporti ng documentati on.• Forgetti ng to sign a paper fi led return• Missing valuable tax credits and deducti ons. • Math errors
Choosing a preparerThere are many things to consider when choosing a tax preparer. The following are some criteria for evaluati ng a preparer.
• How many years of experience does the preparer have?• Is the preparer registered with the IRS and New York State? (required)• Are there offi ce hours during “off season?” Will your tax preparer be easily accessible aft er tax season? • Is the preparer Insured?• Is the fee reasonable?• Is the locati on of the offi ce convenient? Are the offi ce hours reasonable? • Does the preparer and staff have integrity, act professional and value confi denti ality?• Ask for references.

Hannah VanWie rises early every day to care for each calf on her family’s dairy farm. The mornings are dark and cold but still she does it without complaint. The rest of the world is quiet and sleeping. But not the calves. Hannah knows what mothers and farmers alike know: babies are hungry and they need to be fed. It’s 3:30 in the morning and her day is just beginning. They wait for her in the barn. Carefully, Hannah prepares bottles for them, warming the milk, adding vitamins, and feeding all sixteen of them individually. She knows each calf’s name. To her, they are beloved pets, each with a distinct personality. Finished with the feeding, Hannah is ready for the rest of her day: a shower, breakfast and school. She’s a junior at Bethlehem Central High School, enrolled in the Culinary Arts program at VOTEC. After her day of school, it’s back to the barn. Again, the calves are waiting. She feeds them, cares for them and then heads in for homework and dinner. By eight, Hannah is getting ready for bed. Three-thirty comes early. She didn’t always take care of the calves. Not too long ago, Hannah worked alongside her brothers washing milk bottles. She hated it. Her brothers teased and tormented her. Smart, headstrong and outspoken, she decided to do something about it. So she went to her father, a fourth-generation farmer and owner of Meadowbrook Farms Dairy in Clarksville. He listened to what she had to say and Hannah convinced him that she could do another job. One with more responsibility that would bring her closer to her beloved animals. Soon, she was off bottle-washing duty and doing exactly what she loves: caring for the calves. The early morning hours are a small price to pay for getting the job she wanted. It’s not the only time Hannah has advocated for change and got her way. There was the issue with the Pledge of Allegiance at school. The problem ... they didn’t say it. The elementary schools and the middle school make the Pledge of Allegiance part
of every morning. However, at the high school... there was nothing. “On the fi rst day of school in ninth grade, I stood up to say the pledge. Everyone in homeroom just looked at me like, um, what are you doing?” Bethlehem Central High had stopped reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in school. To Hannah, it didn’t seem right. So she sat down and talked with her grandmother about it. They agreed that reciting the pledge was a way of showing respect for our country, for our freedom, for the many people who have served our country.
Still wondering what she could do to change things at school, Hannah then asked her father the same question.. The advice he gave to his daughter? “If you don’t like it, then do something about it.” Still wondering what that thing would be, she walked back to her grandmother’s house. Her Grandmother suggested a petition and her father readily agreed. Now, with confi dence, Hannah crafted her pledge petition. It started out “This is a petition to bring the Pledge of Allegiance back to the daily routine of the Bethlehem Central High School...” And with those words, she headed back to school. She and her friends passed them around in the hallways, at lunch. “So many kids really stood up and supported me and the idea. They told their friends. It’s how we made it happen.”Finally, with more than 400 signatures, she brought the petition to the school’s principal. He took the petition to the student council and the administrators. She waited, nervously, for weeks. Finally, he got back to her and told her how so many teachers supported the idea. They thought it was a great and positive step. Hannah had succeeded - the Pledge was coming back. Hannah was told that originally the problem was with the words “one nation, under God.” Not all students wanted to stand up and say those words. It was agreed and made very clear: students not wanting to say the pledge, didn’t have to. But Hannah wanted to be sure of one thing: the pledge they brought back would be the Pledge as authorized by Congress in 1954. “If you don’t say all of it, it doesn’t feel like the pledge to me. I didn’t want part of it. I wanted the whole Pledge of Allegiance.”
Hannah VanWie | Pledge Patriot“So many kids really stood
up and supported me and the idea. They told their friends.
It’s how we made it happen.”
21
Hannah now goes to school, proudly recites the Pledge and then heads off to her culinary program. “Food has always been a great interest of mine. And I have a plan to someday open an ice cream shop with my father, using the milk from our dairy.” She loves to bake, cupcakes being her specialty. Chocolate Mousse Cupcakes are Hannah’s signature dish. It’s her most requested recipe among family and friends.
‘‘I’ve always, always, always loved baking.” Hannah explains how grateful she is to her mother for explaining to her the science of baking. As a child, she spent hours in the kitchen with her mother mixing, measuring and pouring. There’s the baking and her calves, and really, that sounds like enough. Still, she has other passions. Photography makes her sit up straight and talk excitedly. She especially loves black and white images. Hannah marvels how even a tiny movement; the tilt of a head or a hand position, can change an entire photograph. She takes pictures of her little brother, sister and of course her cows. The cow pictures show their personalities, and the bond between calf and girl. This young woman who so often acts like a grown-up, in her responsibilities and school, turns into a little girl when she talks about one of her favorite chores: riding in the milk truck with her father. “I love going on the milk route with my father. I get to hear people tell us how much they love our milk. We get to meet so many nice people and go into little stores.”
The balance of school work and farm work isn’t always so easy. She does her work, does alright in school. What she loves best though, is the time spent on the farm with her family and her calves.
Hannah’s many passions shine when she talks about her life. Her pretty blue eyes sparkle, and occasionally, she blushes talking about all of her many interests. Mostly, though, the pride shows on her face when she is asked about the change she brought about at school.“It’s amazing to me, that you hear about how one person did something to make change happen. And I think about how I did that. It makes me feel good.”

Partner Up!Often, February brings to mind pictures of young love-birds and cupid fl ying through the sky. Keep in mind, Valentine’s Day may be based on partnerships and St. Valentine, but there’s a lot we should recognize about the fun, heart-fi lled holiday.
It offers an opportunity to do things with a partner, whether your partner is a child, spouse, signifi cant other, or friend. That’s why, if you mention this article to our martial arts school, you’ll be entitled to a special offer including a free uniform when you sign up with a friend or family member.
You may be aware that martial arts training is great for both kids and adults. You may even know adults will benefi t from exercise, stress relief, self-defense, and goal setting, while kids learn disciple, goal setting, self-defense, and respect building, enhance their motor skills and fl exibility, and earn better grades.
Have you thought of doing martial arts with a partner? A partner doesn’t have to be in the same class, even though that may be possible. It means, at a minimum, being involved in the same activity so you both have a commonality and maybe even some common goals. Having a partner, in any activity, including martial arts will offer numerous benefi ts:
Accountability - Having a friend or child always looking to see if you are training is a huge motivation to stick with it.
Commitment and Motivation – There is nothing better than having a partner committed to the same goal as you to keep you involved and motivated.
Competition and Support - As long as the competi-tion is healthy and friendly, having friends in the same workout routine acts as a support community. This may enhance your chances of sticking with it greater than any other motivation.
Variety - When working out with partners, you have the ability to keep it fresh. Even though you will have an instructor guiding the way, you and a partner can practice together outside of classes. This is not always the case in individual exercise programs.

How to Save Money on BrakesIt’s no secret your vehicle’s brakes are an essential safety system. With complex hydraulic mechanisms and plenty of parts that need replacing on a regular basis, it’s always tempting to put off your brake service as long as possible to save a few pennies. The truth is, failing to keep up with routine maintenance is a sure-fi re way to cause yourself extra headaches in the future. That doesn’t mean you can’t try to reduce the cost of this necessity. Keep Up With Maintenance Make sure you do all of your brake maintenance on time. Failing to do so can cause damage to expensive parts, sticking you with a hefty bill. For example, it’s easy to overlook replacing you vehicle’s brake fl uid, but if you skip the job for a long time, you could cause damage to your brake lines, calipers and your proportioning valve. Replacing all of those parts could cost well over $1,000, whereas bleeding your brake system shouldn’t cost more than $50. Use Quality Parts It may be tempting to go for the cheapest parts possible when picking up new bits for your car, but the truth is lackluster replacement parts fail quicker than their name-brand counterparts. Rotors from Mexico may cost as little as $30, whereas a quality example may be closer to $60, but if you have to replace the $30 rotor three times as often, you’ve lost any money you gained in the fi rst place. Do yourself a favor and pick up OEM or mechanic-recommended equipment. Change Your Driving Habits More than anything else you can do, changing how you drive will save you tons on your vehicle’s brake costs. Slowing down earlier, not coming to abrupt stops and not riding the brakes will go a long way toward making your car’s equipment last longer than it otherwise would. Ask if Your Calipers Can Be Rebuilt If you haven’t taken the best care of your brake system and your mechanic tells you the vehicle will need a new caliper, ask if it can simply be rebuilt instead. In most cases, rebuild kits cost around $30 and the job doesn’t take very long. Compare that to over $100 for a caliper on most cars, and you can see the savings.

In the annual State of the Town address, I stated that we are in good condition. Despite the economic downturn and fi scal diffi culties, life in our town for most of our residents is a good one. We live in a beautiful place, with wonderful people and are in better shape than many other municipalities. Bethlehem is home to far more than our fair share
of talented, committed and energetic individuals. As a fi nancial analyst might say, “the fundamentals are good.”
Despite these underlying strengths, there is a lot of work to be done to maintain the good life that we value. Town fi nances are on an unsustainable course, with expenses growing faster than revenues. Past budgets have depleted reserves, which leaves few resources to shelter us from fi scal reality. The situation is not desperate, but it is serious. We must fi nd new ways of doing business, or face hard choices to cut services, impose or raise user fees, or fi nd other ways to raise revenues.
Our town’s strengths are already a big part of the solution. We must take full advantage of the commitment, energy and talents of our citizenry. I’m already gathering a group of budget experts to help us address our fi nancial issues, on a volunteer basis. They’ll help us fi nd the areas where we can productively share services or combine them with other levels of government. This is the top priority for 2012, and I am willing to consider any reasonable change that helps us restore structural balance to our budget.
In Bethlehem, we never have diffi culty putting together group of people to tackle a problem, or fi nding citizen volunteers with just the right skills to handle any situation. The people who stepped up to fi ll an interim town board seat are an excellent example. The skills and knowledge offered by this group were truly impressive, including strong community leadership and careers demonstrating great ability and character. I’m proud of the choice we made in George Lenhardt, who will serve us well, and in a nonpartisan fashion, until the voters can directly choose a new board member. But I’m even more proud that so many highly qualifi ed people offered to be considered. Their willingness to do so, and the outstanding qualities they offered, is a testament to our strength as a community.
One of the things we need to do to ensure that we reach our highest potential is to follow through on the good ideas put together by citizens advisory groups. For example, the work of the Delaware Avenue and 9W study groups has been excellent, and yet we haven’t made nearly enough progress on these two vital gateways to Bethlehem.
It’s time to get going by identifying near-term achievable solutions, and then moving forward. Let’s work with the business community and civic groups to see what we can do right now to make Delaware Avenue the premier main street in the region, and a shining example of all that Bethlehem has to offer. If we roll up our sleeves and fi nd just a few resources, plant some trees and work together, I know we can kick it up a notch. And we should be asking the same questions about an action plan for 9W, because a study on the shelf doesn’t move us forward.
We should also revisit our town’s comprehensive plan and land use initiatives. It’s time to evaluate the fi rst seven years of the plan, and reach out to the citizens to get their input on its many goals. These include promoting a stronger nonresidential tax base, mixed-use development in some areas, choices in housing, particularly for seniors, and preservation of natural areas and open space. I know there is both support for, and concern about, development. We need to be sure that the policies we follow are the best choices we can make together as a community.
Bethlehem should be able to create an effi cient, modern government that serves as a model for suburban towns across the state, and we should also be a model for engaging politics, ethics and civic involvement. I will not be satisfi ed until Bethlehem stands out as a shining example to every community in the region. That is both our privilege and responsibility.

Here’s How to Insure a Great Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day is almost upon us. To celebrate, you may want to present your loved ones with chocolates, fl owers or any number of other traditional gifts. But if your valentine also happens to be your spouse or your life partner, you also might want to show your love in another way — by making sure you have adequate insurance.
Just consider some of the things that life insurance can do for you and your family:
Pay off your mortgage — With suffi cient life insurance, your family can remain in their home should anything happen to you.Educate your children — College is expensive, and it seems to get more costly every year. If you were to die prematurely, your life insurance proceeds could help pay for your children’s education. Help fund retirement — Term insurance consists of just a death benefi t. But “permanent” insurance policies, such as whole life or universal life, a tax-advantaged savings component that could help pay for your retirement and help keep you fi nancially independent — which means you won’t have to worry about being a “burden” to your grown children. Furthermore, proceeds from your life insurance policy could help your surviving spouse retire more comfortably.Help protect your business — If you’re involved in a family-owned business enterprise, you can structure a life insurance policy to help preserve the business or transfer it to the next generation.Pay for estate taxes — If your estate is sizable, it could generate estate taxes. Life insurance proceeds can help your heirs pay these taxes.Clearly, life insurance offers a variety of benefi ts. But how much do you need?
And what type do you need? You might hear that your coverage should be worth around seven or eight times your annual salary. But there’s really no one-size-fi ts-all formula. In determining how much life insurance you require, you should consider your age, your income, the size of your family, the amount of your mortgage, whether your spouse has a retirement account, your fi nancial goals and other factors. Your fi nancial advisor can help you assess these variables to determine the appropriate level of coverage.
One fi nal word on life insurance: Don’t wait too long before purchasing a policy or upgrading your existing one. Your life insurance premium is based, in part, on your age, so the sooner you act, the better. Also, the time to buy life insurance is while you are healthy, because poor health could prevent you from obtaining coverage.
As important as it is, life insurance isn’t the only protection you and your loved ones may need. During your working years, you are actually more likely to become temporarily disabled, due to injury or illness, than you are to die. If you weren’t able to work for a while, you could help your family maintain its lifestyle if you had an adequate disability income insurance policy. Your employer might offer you some coverage as a benefi t, but it might not be suffi cient, either in terms of income or the length of the disability covered. Consequently, you may want to explore an individual disability insurance policy. When you think of romantic Valentine’s Day presents, “insurance” probably doesn’t pop up right away. Yet, by making sure you’ve got all the coverage you need, you may actually be giving your loved ones the greatest gift they’ll ever receive.

Slingerlands: This stately home on Kenwood Avenue was recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Jessie White Sprong bought it 1886 from Albert I. Slingerland. J. APPOLOHEATING, INC.
SINCE 1967
Reduce thermostat setting to 68 degrees. Reducing your thermostat setting can substantially lower your heating costs.
Set back thermostat at night and when you leave home. Setting the thermostat back 10 degrees at night or when the house will be unoccupied can save up to 15% on heating costs.
Install a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats allow you to reduce your home's temperature at night and during the day and still have the home warm when you wake up or come home from work.
Change furnace fi lter monthly. Clogged furnace fi lters lower the heater's effi ciency by preventing proper airfl ow through the furnace. Low-cost fi lters are available from your local hardware store.
Have furnace "tuned up" annually. Having your furnace cleaned and tuned annually helps the heating system operate safely and effi ciently. Tuning may involve resetting the fuel-air mixture for proper combustion as well as cleaning of the blower and burners.
Let sunshine in south windows. Open drapes on the south side of your home during winter days and close them at night. Sun angles are low in winter, allowing substantial solar heating through all south windows.
Check and replace weather stripping on doors and windows.Air leaks around faulty weather stripping on doors and windows not only make your home drafty but they also increase heating costs.
Close storm windows and doors.Storm windows installed over primary windows are almost as good as double-pane windows for reducing heat loss, but they only work if they are kept closed.
Lower the thermostat set point on your water heater.Keep water temperatures at about 120 degrees. You can check your water temperature by carefully placing the back of your hand under a steady stream of hot water—if you can't keep your hand there, your water is too hot.
Reduce hot water use.Reducing hot water use reduces the cost of heating water. Low-fl ow showerheads save water and energy. Using the cold water setting on your washing machine and repairing leaky faucets will save on water and water-heating costs.
Keep your family SAFE AND WARM this winter by scheduling your HEATING SYSTEM TUNE-UP today!
Although there's not much that can be done to lower the price of natural gas this winter, there are some no- or low-cost things you can do to save on your gas bill. Having a professional energy audit of your home can also help identify additional ways to tighten up your home and save on your heating bills.

It‛s cold outside… Why not warm up to a good book?Greetings fellow readers,
February brings the mid-mark for winter. It seems these past years that the majority of our snowfall has been in February and March rather than in December and January. As I write this article, the snow is falling steadily outside the shop. Seamus is cuddled up on the couch…Broadway tunes are playing behind me...I have a cup of Nana (mint) tea brewing as I gather my thoughts for this article. My latest “read” is on the counter, which I will turn to, if there is the time. My latest read is a fascinating historical novel. Mary, Mrs. A. Lincoln by Janis Cooke Newman. This novel, written in the fi rst person, is comprised of the notes of Mary Todd Lincoln while she was an inmate of Bellevue, a lunatic asylum. She takes up her pen to block out the screams and moans of the other inmates and to save her own sanity. The chapters go back and forth between the present and her past intermingling her historical timeline, her personal life, and her life of despair of her commitment to the lunatic asylum by her only living son, Robert. It is fact that Mary Todd Lincoln drove her family deeply into debt because of compulsive shopping, seeking out séances and spiritualists to ease her pain and grief. I am not sure how I would have dealt with the pain of losing 3 children and a husband all before I was 56. The author proposes that she was perfectly sane, though impulsive, and at times ill-advised, it presents the reasons behind her actions. “Shopping therapy”, though manic, today would not be considered a sign of “lunacy” but it might be the theme of your latest reality show! I found the insight into life as a woman in the 1800s fascinating. Everything from the daily chores of making soap, cleaning with white ash & vinegar, to repurposing dresses into blouses & shirts. Her strong will and interest in politics was criticized by her family, especially her oldest sister & Lincoln‛s political advisors. The common thought of the day was that a woman‛s brain could not handle higher thinking such as math, science, politics and philosophy. Even “over reading” Scripture was considered too strenuous for the female brain! Women who showed these interests or were passionate about anything were considered unstable. Scripture, philosophy and the science of the day supported this and could often be used to institutionalize a woman. Living in such an
environment combined with the rising infl uence of Spiritualists, Millerites, I was saddened at the news of the death of Robert Parker one of our favorite mystery writers. Spenser (which the TV show Spenser for Hire was spun) and Paradise mysteries (featuring Jesse Stone, played by Tom Selleck in the TV movies) tend to center in Massachusetts, Parker‛s native state. Known as the dean of crime mystery, with over 50 titles, he wrote sharp P.I. and small town police department tales. His next Jesse Stone novel is due out this month. He will be greatly missed. February is a month dedicated to Black History, American Heart Association, Valentine‛s Day and Lent. We have several books that might be of interest to you in these areas right here at the shop. We have an ever growing History section, Health, Diet & Nutrition section, over 1,200 romance novels (100+ paranormal romances), and a large religion/inspiration section with over 500 books including Bibles, contemplative books on prayer and meditation, Christian novels including Beverly Lewis and Wanda Brunstetter‛s Amish novels and contemporary authors such as Karen Kingsbury and Jan Karon. (Mitford series). My recommendations for Lenten reading, two contemporary tales: Dinner with a Perfect Stranger: An Invitation Worth Considering by David Gregory a small but powerful book and Joshua: A Parable for Today by Father Joseph Girzone, one of my High School teachers! His very popular “Joshua” series (millions sold worldwide) are simple, though thought provoking “what if” reading for Lenten refl ection. Since children are off during President‛s week why not have your child read about a President, First Lady or founding historical fi gure? We have great biographies as well as historical fi ction chapter books for your student. The American Girl Doll series, Little House on the Prairie, the “Dear Diary” series are just a few books that give interesting insight into life in America long ago. If you don‛t know where to start when looking for new children‛s books…why not check out these websites: www.teachersfi rst.com/100books.cfm or www.parents.com/fun/book-gallery. You can always come into Tattered Pages, where I would be more than glad to help your child fi nd just the right book. We currently have around 4,000 books for toddlers to teens. February is a great time to delve into hobbies and crafts. We have an incredible array of needlework books, knitting, crocheting, quilting, scrapbooking, painting, and fl ower arranging books. We have reference books, such as Reader‛s Digests Needlework Handbook and books by Leisure Arts or Lion Brands. If your hobby is gardening…we have great gardening books in shop that can help you as

When the snow fi nally arrives, so will slippery walkways and stairs. For people with osteoporosis or fragile bones, the winter ice can pose a serious threat to your health. If you don’t have osteoporosis, now is the ti me to prevent it.
WHAT IS OSTEOPOROSIS? Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become weak and fragile due to a decrease in bone mass and bone ti ssue. Bone is an acti ve ti ssue that is conti nuously being renewed: “old” bone is absorbed and replaced by “new” bone. If too much bone is absorbed or the absorpti on is too fast, osteoporosis will result.
WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF OSTEOPOROSIS?Osteoporosis can lead to fractures primarily of the wrist, spine and/or hip. In additi on to the pain and discomfort of the fracture, half of pati ents who suff er a hip fracture are immobile and require nursing care. Aft er a hip fracture 20% of pati ents who were ambulatory before the fracture, require long term nursing care. In the year aft er a hip fracture, over 20% of pati ents die due to complicati ons. Now is the ti me to avoid these potenti al problems regardless of your age.
AM I AT RISK FOR OSTEOPOROSIS?There are many things that can place you at a greater risk of suff ering from osteoporosis including:
Menopause before the age of 45• A family history of fractures in elderly women• Women of small or thin stature• An inacti ve lifestyle • Cigarett e smoking• Excessive alcohol use• Old age• Certain prescripti on medicati ons (be sure to check • with your Four Corners pharmacist)
WHAT CAN I DO TO REDUCE MY RISK FOR OSTEOPOROSIS?The best defense against osteoporosis is preventi on. This can be done by eati ng a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, exercising regularly, quitti ng smoking, and limiti ng alcohol intake. Vitamin D helps the absorpti on of calcium and can be found in milk, daily vitamin supplements and in combinati on with some calcium supplements.
HOW DO I KNOW HOW MUCH CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D I SHOULD HAVE?There are various guidelines for how much calcium and
vitamin D a person should consume daily. The Nati onal Osteoporosis Foundati on, or NOF, (htt p://www.nof.org/aboutosteoporosis/preventi on/calcium) recommends the following as the total amount you should get per day in through your diet and any supplements: (keep in mind, that due to your own health conditi ons, your doctor may recommend more or less than these general recommendati ons)• Women under age 50 need a total of 1,000 milligrams (mg) of calcium and 400-800 internati onal units (IU) of Vitamin D daily. • Women age 50 and older need a total of 1,200 mg of calcium and 800-1,000 IU of Vitamin D daily. • Men under age 50 need a total of 1,000 mg of calcium and 400-800 IU of Vitamin D daily. • Men age 50-70 need a total of 1,000 mg of calcium and 800-1,000 IU of Vitamin D daily. • Men age 71 and older need a total of 1,200 mg of calcium and 800-1,000 IU of Vitamin D daily.
Start by assessing your dietary intake of calcium to see how much you are getti ng each day. The NOF website (htt p://www.nof.org/aboutosteoporosis/preventi on/calcium) provides helpful hints on how to read food labels on packages. A glass of milk, supplemented orange juice or a container of yogurt contains about 300mg of elemental calcium. A web based tool that esti mates your calcium intake is found at htt p://www.dairycouncilofca.org/Tools/CalciumQuiz/. If you determine you need to increase calcium intake, start slowly and talk with your doctor. Increasing calcium can cause consti pati on and some pati ents with kidney stones or other problems should supplement calcium without monitoring.
MY DOCTOR THINKS I NEED A CALCIUM SUPPLEMENT. WHAT PRODUCT SHOULD I TAKE?If you and your doctor determine supplements are needed because you cannot get enough calcium in your diet, do not take a product with more than 500 to 600mg of elemental calcium. You cannot absorb more than that in one dose. Also do not take more than the recommended amount of vitamin D without

checking with your doctor. Calcium is available as calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. Take calcium carbonate supplements with food as they need stomach acid to be absorbed. If you take a medicati on to reduce your stomach acid, such as a Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium , Zantac or Tagamet, take calcium citrate products which are absorbed bett er with lower stomach acid. Both types of calcium come in tablets and chewables – pick one you can easily take. You should not take calcium supplements at the same ti me as thyroid medicati on and some anti bioti cs. Check with your Four Corners Pharmacist to see if you have any interacti ng medicati ons.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE OSTEOPOROSIS?Osteoporosis is oft en silent as many people do not know they have it. Some pati ents have “kyphosis” which is the curving of the spine due to spinal fractures as shown in the picture above. One way a doctor can determine if you have osteoporosis is to do a bone density test or DEXA. This test is not invasive (no blood work or needles). You lie on a table and have something similar to an x-ray done as shown in the picture on the right. Depending on your age, your medical insurance may cover the cost of the test.
HOW IS OSTEOPOROSIS TREATED?1. Monitor your diet – make sure you consume enough calcium each day.2. Follow your doctor’s suggesti ons and exercise regularly. Acti viti es, such as walking, jogging, climbing stairs, fl oor push-ups and wall push-ups, can improve your bone strength.3. Make sure you are living in a safe environment where the risk of falling is low. Keep the house well lit; secure loose rugs and long electrical cords. Wear comfortable no slip shoes.4. Treat other diseases that can cause osteoporosis or reduce the use of medicati ons that can increase the risk of osteoporosis.5. Take your medicati on as prescribed. There are several medicati ons that can be used to treat osteoporosis. Talk with your doctor and pharmacist about one that is right for you. Once you start taking it, keep taking your calcium and vitamin D supplements. The medicine needs the calcium and vitamin D to work its best.
