Thesecond hit got him In the leg. And a third bullet cut rightacross the balls of his right-hand forefingers, clipping everyo ne o f them to the bone.

His space was so s ma ll h e c o ul d n' t s q ui r m a r ou n d t o relievehis own weight from h i s p a in i n g back. H e c o ul d n' t straightenout h i s l eg s, w hi ch w er e bent above him. He couldn· t see outof his little prison. H e h a d n ot h ad a b it e t o e at or a drop ofwater. All this for eight days and nights.

Yet w h en we f o un d h i m his physical condition was strong,

and h i s m i nd w as a s c al m and ra t iona l as though he were sittingIn a London club, He was in agony, yet in his correct Oxfordaccent he even apologized f o r t a ki n g up our time to get him out.

The American soldiers of our rescue party cussed a s t he yworked, cussed with open admiration for th i s Br i ti sh fiier's greatn es s o f hear t which had kept l1im alive and s an e t hr ou g h h islonely and gradually hope-dimming ordeal.
