Winter's twin trafflc trouble-makers, less visibility and pOortraction, still spell double trouble for motorists, Superintendentof Police Samuel W. Gearhart said this week. He appealed forincreased care in driving during the hazardous months of Janu

Rry and February.

Research by the Nat iona l Safety Council shOWS that thetrafflc death rate la s t Winte r was more than 50 per cent h igherthan the Summer rate In the Northern half of the U. S. Evenin Southern s tates, w i th no severe cold but occasional periods ofsnow and ice, the death ra te for Winter months was nearly 25 percent higher than that of Summer months.

"Drivers can safeguard g,gainst the dangers of reduced visibility and inadequate traction by giving t he ir c ar s t he b es t o fcare and by opera ting them in the safest manner," the super in

tendent declared.Winter ca re includes providing anti-skid chains and main

taining windshield wipers, defrosters and lights In proper condition. Safe operation means driving at reduced, controlled speedsand keep ing ' an alert lookout for both expected and improperactions of fellow drivers, pedestrians and children who may beengaged in Wintertime sport.

Superintendent Gearhart avised adherence to the followingsafe Winter driving rules, recommended by the National SafetyCouncil's Committee on Winter driving hazards:

1. ADJUSTSPEED TO CONDITIONS.Be especially care

ful at intersections, on curves and bridges, and in schoolzones . B ridge f loors may be ice coa ted even when paved a.pproach is comparatively clear.

2. MAKE WISE USE OF CHAINS. Normal stopping distances are leng thened th ree to eleven times on snow or ice .Anti-skid chains reduce braking distance on snow, ice 50per cent, get you up and downslippery hills andpreven t ge t

ting stuck.3. KEEP YOUR BRAKES EQUALIZED. Check brakell

periodically. Forget the notion that letting air out of yourtires will prevent skidding. Tire chains are the most practical

help.4. MAINTAIN ADEQUATE VISION. Make s ur e y ou r

windshield wipers and defrosters are in good order. Don't forget the rear window when you brush off freshly fallen snow.

5. SEE THAT YOUR LIGHTS ARE OKAY. Hours ofdarknessare still long. Some timesyou need lower beam headlamps even in "daylight" if the atmosphere 1s foggy or dense.

6. AVOID SUDDEN STARTS, STOPS AND DIREC

TIONAL CHANGES. Start slowly, and in second gear i f Without chains. Stop gradually, applying brakes lightly on-off

and-on.

7. BEWARE CARBON MONOXIDE. Open garage d o o r ~before starting engine. Avoid running motor of stationaryvehicle to keep warm. Fresh air is the best means of fighting

this gas.8. KEEP POSTED ON WEATHER CONDITIONS. Watch

for predictions in your local newspaper, listen for specialwarnings over your radio station.
