Our total support to the voluntary sector in Berkshire:
£730,643Left to right: Andrew Middleton - CEO; The Hon. Mrs Bayliss JP - Lord Lieutenant for the Royal County of Berkshire and President of Berkshire Community Foundation and Chris Barrett - Chair of Trustees.

In July, we were delighted to hear that HRH Princess Beatrice of York has graciously agreed to become our Royal Patron.
It has been another busy and exciting year for the Foundation and I am pleased to report that we have made good progress. Most importantly, we have made grants of £730,643 during the year; up £176,649 on last year and in line with our expectation of making £1 million of grants per annum by 2016. We remain determined to increase grant making year on year because the need in Berkshire is increasing, not diminishing. Last year we received applications for grants totalling an estimated £3 million – so we have only been able to satisfy one in four.
Developing funds has become much harder but it is our focus for the coming year. We have been working on a number of new initiatives including the Business Philanthropy Club and the rejuvenation of ‘Give a Child a Chance’.
2014 will be The Lord Lieutenant’s last year as our President – and what a President Mary has been, working tirelessly on behalf of the Foundation for the last five years as its President and for the previous two years as a Trustee. As an organisation we have moved forward enormously during that period and on behalf of the Foundation, I would like to extend our sincere thanks for the support and encouragement she has given us.
I would also like to thank my Board of Trustees, the co-opted members of our various Committees and the staff for their invaluable support and commitment during the past year.
We have a challenging year ahead and I will leave you with a thought from Theodore Roosevelt who said: “Believe you can – and you’re halfway there”. Well, we believe that we can make a positive difference in communities across Berkshire and we are determined to do so.

We raise funds for, and make grants to, local charities and community groups addressing need across Berkshire. We operate to ensure any form of philanthropy, whether from an individual or an organisation, is effective and brings greatest benefit to those in need. We encourage people to support their local communities, investing their money in Berkshire where they can see the real difference it makes to people’s lives.

“Berkshire Community Foundation has been instrumental in providing funding to kick start and/or maintain these sporting activities. Without this help we would not have been able to achieve anywhere near the successes we have had in these sporting areas.” Tom Conlin, Chief Executive of BCBS
Berkshire County Blind Society (BCBS)A grant of £8,100 from Comic Relief has enabled more visually impaired people to enjoy a programme of supported sporting activity. BCBS, a Reading based charity, provides over 2,100 visually impaired people in Berkshire with the information and support they need to live independently and safely, so they can enjoy their lives and feel valued in their communities. BCBS has introduced a wide range of sporting activities for children and young adults, and the organisation has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for 2014 in recognition of its work.
Connecting people who care with causes that matter
How we make a difference in the community
During 2013/2014 we awarded a total of 181 grants to a wide range of projects. We are local experts in connecting those who want to give support with the community organisations that are most in need; getting money to where it really matters. We aim to build stronger communities and enrich lives by giving grants that genuinely help to meet the needs of local people.
“The physio, home exercise, remedial massage and acupuncture financed by grants from Berkshire Community Foundation have helped our members’ mobility, flexibility, strength and stamina. These grants have been invaluable and we cannot thank you enough.” Rosalind Milne, Maidenhead & District Stroke Club
“I work with families in a children’s centre and all I learnt today I will be able to use. This has been the most clear and concise training around benefits I have ever attended and I thought the training was very easy to understand.” Frontline worker who attended a training session at Bracknell
and District Citizens Advice Bureau.
A grant of £4,000 from Autodata was awarded to the Maidenhead and District Stroke Club, to provide physiotherapy and acupuncture sessions for people who have suffered a stroke. Stroke is the most common cause of disability in the UK, with the recovery and rehabilitation from stroke presenting many physical and emotional challenges. The club help around 50 members from every walk of life to re-establish themselves in social situations and make use of the abilities they have.
Berkshire Citizens Advice Bureau help people reduce stress and resolve their problems by providing free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to any member of the community. A grant of £17,500 from Berkshire Community Foundation helped to fund Welfare Reform training sessions.

“We were so happy and grateful to Slough CVS who helped us with our first year subscription to Localgiving.com, as we had heard it was a fantastic way to raise funds online. The additional practical support from Berkshire Community Foundation on how to make best use of this online giving site was brilliant as it helped us to raise some much needed funds for core costs as well as supporting some of our learners.” Apna Virsa Project Co-ordinators Seema Kamboj & Bobbi Johal
Working in partnership with Berkshire Community Foundation, Localgiving.com provides local charities and community groups with online fundraising webpages, as well as the opportunity to be part of a community that supports with fundraising thus enabling organisations to become more effective and sustainable. This year voluntary groups have raised £212,583 through Localgiving.com
Apna Virsa
Apna Virsa is a community organisation that celebrates traditional and contemporary Asian culture across different communities within Slough, to help community cohesion, tolerance and integration. Using Localgiving.com, Apna Virsa raised £7,559.55 in 2013/14. This helped over 500 people to enjoy cultural learning and activities, improving knowledge about their heritage as well as bringing together different communities.

“My leg would not move following my stroke 12 weeks ago. Now it is starting to move. I couldn’t have done it without you.” Stroke survivor, whose therapy is based primarily on the use of
the equipment paid for by The Herongate Fund through Berkshire Community Foundation.
‘Give a Child a Chance’ makes a difference to the lives of disadvantaged children in Berkshire. The fund is targeted towards children with physical or learning disabilities, children with psychological and behavioural issues, and those living in care and areas of deprivation.
ABC to Read
(Assisting Berkshire
Children to Read)
A grant of £4,975 from ‘Give a Child a Chance’ was awarded to help train community volunteers as reading helpers. Volunteers work with Berkshire children who struggle to read, particularly at schools in the more deprived areas of the county, using a ‘one to one’ scheme to improve literacy standards that is unique to Berkshire. The funding has enabled over 350 children to be supported in 60 schools, with 98% of children improving their reading performance. ABC to Read has since won the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, in recognition of its outstanding work.
“ABC to Read is a fantastic organisation which not only supports children with their reading but also develops their interpersonal skills and boosts their self-esteem.” Hawkedon School
West Berkshire Therapy Centre
A grant of £4,795 was awarded from The Herongate Fund to buy specialised equipment that helps people who suffer from a wide range of disabling conditions. Many disabled people find it difficult to take as much exercise as is recommended. This power-assisted equipment allows them to move every major muscle in their body, so even very weak muscles can be exercised, improving overall health and helping them to live a more mobilised and independent life.

The low grades (D) indicate that we must take action as soon as possible.
Vital Signs Vital Signs, launched on 1 October 2013, reports how we think Berkshire is doing in relation to 12 key themes, including work, housing, community and health. Grades are used to indicate priorities for action, based partly on how we are performing in relation to the rest of the UK but also on our assessment of the local situation.
The Vital Signs report concludes that although there is a good overall quality of life, there is stark inequality across the county, for example many young people in isolated rural communities or pockets of urban deprivation face very challenging conditions.
Our report enables us to identify the priority issues that present the most significant challenges and opportunities for change. We work with donors to suggest how community philanthropy can best respond to specific issues and have the local knowledge about where charitable efforts should be focussed for maximum impact.
Berkshire’s Vital Signs is just the beginning of an ongoing process of discussion and, as more people become involved, we expect to improve our knowledge of what is happening in Berkshire and what local people regard as important.
The Berkshire Flood Recovery Fund
11
Early 2014 saw some of the worst flooding ever to hit our county, causing massive damage to land and communities. In response to this we launched the Berkshire Flood Recovery Fund, which received extensive media coverage and helped to raise awareness of the issues and encourage donations. The initial focus of the fund was to award grants to vulnerable individuals, to help them recover from the floods. In addition, grants have also been awarded to community groups such as Berkshire Lowland Search & Rescue.
The Berkshire Flood Recovery Fund awarded a grant of £8,248 to Berkshire Lowland Search & Rescue, who were deployed into the community during the flooding. They had to borrow a boat from a neighbouring search and rescue team in order to lay sandbags and evacuate people from their homes. The money enabled them to buy their own boat and equipment, to help during episodes of future flooding.
“By having our own equipment that we can maintain we can deploy quicker with more trained personnel and have a greater impact on those affected.” Mel Lewis, Berkshire Lowland Search & Rescue
